13、We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people.“Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?… ”, “When I got that great job,did Jerry really feel good about it,as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?”When we look back, doubts like these can make US feel bad.But when we look back. It’s too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends-or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen,we miss the feeling behind the words.
Suppose someone tells you “you’re a lucky dog”.Is he really on your side? if he says.“You’re a lucky guy” or “You’re a lucky gal”.That’s being friendly. But “lucky dog”?There’s a bit of envy in those words Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the ‘‘dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking.Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says square with the tone of voice? His posture(体态)?The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

We parked at the Hotel Alyeska. We then traveled by van(小型货车) to the Portage station where we got on the train that would take us to the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop. It was a 20~25-minute train ride to Spencer Glacier where we got off the train and took a van to the lake.
We went across the lake in the kayaks. It is about 1.5 miles across the lake to the face of the glacier(冰川) . It was an experience to boat among the icebergs and to see the face of the glacier get closer and closer?
We were excited to begin our hike on the glacier. It was such a thrill walking on the glacier. It rained most of the day but it was still such a beautiful trip in a lifetime experience. After about two hours on the glacier we headed back to the kayaks. The guide took some pictures before we started back across the lake.

My taxi driver stopped his car at once. The tire (轮胎) made a very loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just one inch from the black of the other car.
I wasfrightened. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused
a big accident, turned his head and started yelling(吼叫) at us. I couldn’t believe it! But my taxi driver just smiled at the guy. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost sent us to hospital. ”
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Rubbish Truck (垃圾车法则) . ” He explained that many people are like rubbish trucks. They run around full of rubbish, full of anger and full of bad feelings. As their rubbish piles up, they look for a place to throw it away and sometimes they’ll throw it at you. Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their rubbish and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.
Successful people never let rubbish trucks change their moods (情绪). Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so love those who love you and pray(祈祷) for those who don’t.

17、The Silk Road is a historically important international trade route between China and the Mediterranean(地中海). It began during the Western Han Dynasty and has been a bridge between East and West for over 2,000 years.
The ancient road started from Chang'an (now Xi'an) and ended in Eastern Europe, near today's Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. It was about 6,500 kilometres long and went across one-fourth of the planet.
The Silk Road got its name in the 19th century because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Silk, jade, ceramics and iron went west to Rome. And from the west came glass, gems and food like carrots.
The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. It was more than an ancient international trade route. Besides trade, knowledge about arts, science and literature, as well as crafts and technologies was shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other.
Today, China is trying to build the “21st Century Marine(海洋的) Silk Road”. With the help of APEC held in Beijing in November 2014,the dream of One Belt One Road(the “Silk Road Economic Belt” and “21st Century Marine Silk Road”)(“一带一路”) is coming true.
