四. 阅读理解(共6题,每空2.5分,共15分)
I had big plans for the past summer, and I almost carried out all of them. Meanwhile, I also did something else, an unexpec ted thing that I never thought I would really do. I learned how t o play golf. Actually, I became a golfer.
Golf has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
I was a golf orphan(孤
儿) all throughout my childhood as I patiently waited for my p arents and my brother to finish their rounds on family vacation s and on weekends at home. My mother was even late pickin g me up one Saturday morning after I took Standard Assessm ent Tests (SATS) because of a longer-than-
expected golf game. She apologized incessantly, but that's fin e by me. I was really just used to it. Professional golf was alw ays on the television at our house.
I married a golfer. My parents celebrated our engagement by buying my future husband a new set of golf clubs
(棒). Despite the long weekend at a golf school 15 summer
s ago when my husband dragged me into playing golf, I still di dn't want to play. I had no interest. Golf seemed boring and to o slow for me — not fun at all. Therefore, I became a golf wid ow(寡
妇). I got used to Saturday mornings at home by myself. Bef ore we had kids, it was great. I would sleep in, go for a run or take a yoga class and then read papers or meet a friend. I did n't mind it at all. In fact, I was happy. I was reminded of somet hing a friend of my father's had told my husband and me befo re we got married. "The key to a good marriage is moments of separation," he said with a smile one night when he and his wife (also a golf widow) took us out to dinner to celebrate our engagement. My husband's golf game gave us our moments of separation. He was happy playing the game he loved. I wa s happy that he was happy and perfectly content to have time for myself. It worked … until we had kids.
When our kids were babies, my husband didn't play nearly as much golf as he used to. He was right there with me, getting u p early on the weekends, changing diapers(尿
布), then helping to make breakfast for our little kids and even tually cheering our bigger kids on during their soccer games. I knew that I had married a golfer way back, but then also a re ally good guy — not that the two are mutually exclusive(排外
的、唯一
的) or anything. Remember, all those good guys in my family are golfers.
Then one of my favorite guys in our family became a golfer — my son aged almost 11. My husband had taught him how to play the game, and he had a new golfing buddy. He was thrill ed. The boys went out together for hours at a time to play. Th ey loved it. I heard great stories. I saw pictures and videos. I was thrilled for them but also, for the first time in my life, a littl e bit jealous. I had been a golf orphan and a golf widow for so long, but I didn't want to become a golf absentee parent. I wa s reminded of my friend's mother who told her why she picked up the game as an adult. "I have three sons, and I realized th at if I wanted to see them or get them to really talk to me, then I needed to play golf," she explained to her grown-
up daughter.
I knew it was time to start. It was my chance to finally learn th e game that I resisted for so many years. If I ever wanted to s pend large amounts of quality time with my son and my daugh ter as I had seen my husband trying to make a golfer out of h er, I would have to learn to play golf.
And as luck would have it, I had three girlfriends who wanted t o become golfers, too. We were all set. We had a golf fourso
打), golf clubs and even golf clothes. We took lessons, and aft er each lesson we went out on the course and played. We too k notes and reviewed them. We practiced a lot.
The better we got, the more fun we had. And the more fun we had, the better we got. We were one another's biggest cheerl eaders, finding the good in one another's every shot and offeri ng constructive criticism, or at least as constructive as we cou ld make it. Our families were happy that we were finally intere sted in golf. I had great fun playing golf. All I wanted to do was play, and when I wasn't playing, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I finally understood why my family abandoned me all those years for it. I would have abandoned myself, too. It's so much fun and so challenging for both the body and the mind. It's al so a great way to spend a beautiful day outside with people th at you love.
As August approached, it was time to take the game back to my family. I played with my husband and children, and that w as a highlight for me. I hope we can make up the lost time out on the course. I'll continue to play with my girlfriends or even j ust by myself.

I had big plans for the past summer, and I almost carried out all of them. Meanwhile, I also di d something else, an unexpected thing that I never thought I would really do. I learned how to play golf. Actually, I became a golfer.
Golf has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was a golf orphan(孤
儿) all throughout my childhood as I patiently waited for my parents and my brother to finish their rounds on family vacations and on weekends at home. My mother was even late pickin g me up one Saturday morning after I took Standard Assessment Tests (SATS) because of a longer-than-
expected golf game. She apologized incessantly, but that's fine by me. I was really just used to it. Professional golf was always on the television at our house.
I married a golfer. My parents celebrated our engagement by buying my future husband a ne w set of golf clubs
(棒). Despite the long weekend at a golf school 15 summers ago when my husband dragg ed me into playing golf, I still didn't want to play. I had no interest. Golf seemed boring and to o slow for me — not fun at all. Therefore, I became a golf widow(寡
妇). I got used to Saturday mornings at home by myself. Before we had kids, it was great. I would sleep in, go for a run or take a yoga class and then read papers or meet a friend. I did n't mind it at all. In fact, I was happy. I was reminded of something a friend of my father's had told my husband and me before we got married. "The key to a good marriage is moments of separation," he said with a smile one night when he and his wife (also a golf widow) took us o ut to dinner to celebrate our engagement. My husband's golf game gave us our moments of s eparation. He was happy playing the game he loved. I was happy that he was happy and per fectly content to have time for myself. It worked … until we had kids.
When our kids were babies, my husband didn't play nearly as much golf as he used to. He w as right there with me, getting up early on the weekends, changing diapers(尿
布), then helping to make breakfast for our little kids and eventually cheering our bigger kids。
