Perhaps the only test score that I remembered is the 55 when I was in high school.
The test was the final for a course. I remembered waiting anxiously as my teacher Mr. Right passed out our papers one by one. It was a rather difficult test. I heard my classmates
groaning, and I could tell by the groans that the scores weren’t looking good.
Mr. Right put my paper on my desk. There in big red numbers, circled to draw attention, was my score, 55!
I lowered my head, and covered the score up quickly. A 55 is not something that you wanted your classmates to see. “The scores were not very good, none of you passed,〞 Mr. Right said. “The highest score in the class was a 55.〞
A 55. That’s me!
Suddenly my sad look didn’t look so bad. I had the highest score. I felt a lot better.
I walked home alone that day with the low but high score. My father knew that I had a big test that day and asked me as soon as I got home, “How did you do in your test?〞“I made a 55,〞 I said.
A frown(皱眉) now stood on my father’s face. I knew I had to explain immediately. “But Dad, I had the highest score in the class, 〞 I proudly stated. I thought that explanation would make a difference. “You failed!〞 my father replied. “But it’s the highest!〞 I insisted. “I don’t care what scores others had, but you failed. What matters is what you do!〞 my father firmly said.
For years, my father was always that way. It didn’t matter what others did, it only mattered what I did and that I did it excellently.
We often don’t understand the wisdom〔智慧〕of good parents until we ourselves stand in the parents’ shoes. My father’s words have carried me throughout life.

Happiness is important to everyone. Most people want to be happy but few know how to
find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Happiness depends on ourselves. In other words, we make our own happiness.
Some people believe that if they are wealthy, they will be able to do anything they want, which means happiness. On the other hand, some people believe that holding a high position in the government is happiness. In this way, you have not only money, but also many other things which can’t be bought by money. However, other people believe that having lots of money is not happiness, nor is holding a high position in the government. These people value 〔重视〕their beliefs, or their intelligence, or their health. They think these can make them happy.
Here are a few ways to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future, for example, getting into college or getting a good job, that we don’t enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasu res, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have close friends usually enjoy happier and healthier lives.
The second secret of happiness is to be active. Many people go dancing or play sports. People can forget about their problems and only think about the activity.
Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. According to studies, people feel good when they volunteer their time to do many meaningful things for other people. If you want to feel happier, do something nice for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to get food for an old neighbor, or simply help around the house.
Now maybe you know how to find happiness!

We sometimes call the lion“the king of the jungle〞because it is stronger and more dangerous than other animals. 1 It is the highest animal in the land food chain.
In the sea, the shark is one of the animals at the top of the food chain. It can swim faster than most other sea animals. 2
3 People are! We are not the biggest or fastest, but we are the cleverest. We could not run faster than cheetahs, so we invented cars and now we can move the fastest. We could not fight better than lions, so we invented guns. Now we can hunt the best. People’s inventions are clever, but they can be dangerous, too. For example, people invented factories,
and now they make the air and rivers dirty. 4 Dirty rivers kill fish, then bears cannot eat the fish and die. If we kill one part of the food chain, other parts also die. Remember that we are part of the food chain, so we are in danger, too! 5 We should and we could do something for the world!

When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling〔摇摆〕, and got ready for a big meal.
Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d bury(埋) our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part—and throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought i t was because he was such
a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.
Well, I’ve relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy t he success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.

A. They ate it in a polite way.

A smile will tell people around you that you are a kind and friendly person. However, many people don’t smile because they think they have ugly teeth. For example, one of my classmates, Mike, doesn’t have very nice teeth, so that is why he seldom opens his mouth. He even says that he has lost confidence because of his teeth. So it is very important for us to look after our teeth. In fact, a lot of people have this problem. Some people inherit teeth problems from their parents, while others’ teeth are damaged because of bad habits, like heavy smoking, eating too much sugar or not brushing teeth often. If your teeth are
in bad shape, you should see a dentist and ask for help. They can help improve your teeth and tell you how to take care of them.
Smiling can help you to feel more confidence and make people think of you as a more friendly person. If you want to keep healthy, you should not only smile but also laugh. An Indian doctor called Kataria said that young children should laugh about 30 times a day, while adults should laugh between 7 and 15 times a day. So please take this chance to smile and laugh now.

4、. If you want to keep healthy, you had better _____
A. not smile often
B. laugh all the time
C. neither smile nor laugh
D. smile and even laugh often
5、. How many times should a child laugh every day in doctor Kataria’s opinion。
