Cuckoos don’t bother building their own nests—they just lay eggs that perfectly imitate those of other birds and take over their nests. But other birds are wishing up, evolving some seriously impressive tricks to spot the cuckoo eggs.
Cuckoos are often know asparasites, meaning that they hide their eggs in the nest of other species. To avoid detection, the cuckoos have evolved so that eggs seem reproduction of those of their preferred targets. If the host bird doesn’t notice the strange egg in its nest, the little cuckoo will actually take the entire nest for itself after it comes out, taking the other eggs on its back and dropping them out of the nest.
To avoid this unpleasant fate for their young, the other birds have evolved a few smart ways to spot the fakes, which we’re only now beginning to fully understand. One of the most amazing finds is that birds have an extra colour-sensitive cell in their eyes, which makes them far more sensitive to ultraviolet wavelengths and allows them to see a far greater range of colours than humans can. This allows cautious birds to detect a fake egg which might be exactly the same to our eyes.
Fascinatingly, we’re actually able to observe different bird species at very different points in their evolutionary war with the cuckoos. For instance, some cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of the redstarts. The blue eggs these cuckoos lay are practically alike to those of the redstarts, and yet they are still sometimes rejected. Compare that with cuckoos who target dunnocks. While those birds lay perfectly blue eggs, their cuckoo invaders just lay white eggs with brown irregular shaped spots. And yet dunnocks barely ever seem to notice the obvious trick.
Biologists suspect these more easily fooled species like the dunnocks are on the same evolutionary path as the redstarts, but they have a long way to go until they evolve the same levels of suspicion. What’s remarkable is that the dunnocks fakes are so bad and the redstart ones so good, and yet cuckoos are still more successful with
the former than the latter.
It speaks to just how thoroughly a species’ behavior can be changed by the pressures of natural selection, or it might just be a bit of strategic cooperation on the part of the dunnocks. Biologists have suggested that these birds are willing to tolerate a parasite every so often because they don’t want to risk accidentally getting rid of one of their own eggs.
4. This passage can be most likely found in a ________.
A. science survey
B. nature magazine
C. zoo advertisement
D. travel journal
5. What does the underlined word “parasite” in paragraph 2 most probably refer to?
A. Animals that work together to raise young.
B. Small harmful animals such as worms or mice.
C. Animals that can adapt to changing environments.
D. Animals which live on or inside other host animals.
6. Which of the following is TRUE about the dunnock according to the passage?
A. It is colour-blind and therefore cannot identify foreign eggs in the nest.
B. It can easily remove cuckoo eggs from the nest because fakes are so bad.
C. It is a host bird that is more likely to raise a cuckoo chick than the redstart.
D. It is unable to evolve and hence accepts cuckoo eggs that appear in the nest.
7. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Dunnocks may eventually learn to recognise foreign eggs.
B. Redstarts seem to be less suspicious compared to dunnocks.
C. Cuckoo birds are good at taking responsibility for their own young.
D. It is very easy for cuckoos to imitate the colouring of the dunnock’s egg.

My family and I never talked about school as the ticket to a future. I was in theclassroom, but I wasn't there to learn to write, read or even speak. When it was my turn to read, I wanted to hide. I was 13 years old, but I already hated being who I was.
I had an English teacher, Mr.Creech, who knew I couldn't read. In one of my first lessons the teacher said that anyone who had a reading age below six had to stand up. I felt so embarrassed. But at the same time, it made me realize that I needed to change the situation. I was determined it wouldn't happen again. Later that day, Mr.Creech
encouraged me and promised he would try his best to help me learn to read. From then on, I never gave up practicing reading.
Then when I was 41 years old, one day, I planned to fly back toTexasto visit my friends and family. On my way from the airport, I saw Mr.Creech buying himself a drink. I rushed over and reached into my pocket to pay for him. “Do I know you?” he asked. “Yes, sir, you do know me,” I answered excitedly. “My name is Anthony Hamilton. You taught me English.” The look on his face told me that he remembered the boy he'd once encouraged.
“I'm so glad I had a chance to see you,” I said. “And Mr.Creech, I have great news to share.” I told him I had learned to read. But that wasn't all. I had become a published author and an active speaker. “The next time you get another Anthony Hamilton in your classroom, please encourage him to read as well,” I added.
The experts say what once worried me has a name:dyslexia(诵读困难). But I can tell you it was a lack of desire for education.
8. Why did the author want to hide?
A. Because he felt sorry for himself.
B. Because he hated being laughed at.
C. Because he couldn't read at all.
D. Because he didn't have a ticket.
9. Which of the following could best describe Mr.Creech?
A. Considerate and dutiful.
B. thoughtful and enthusiastic.
C. Emotional and devoted.
D. Friendly and wise.
10. Why couldn't the author read before meeting Mr.Creech?
A. Because his reading age was not long enough.
B. Because his parents didn't teach him how to read.
C. Because he was afraid of reading before the class.
D. Because he didn't have inner driving force to learn to read.
11. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Mr.Creech taught two students called Anthony Hamilton.
B. The author had become a published author and an active speaker.
C. Dyslexia was just the reason that made the author unable to read.
D. The author was grateful to Mr.Creech.
D
Why can friendships be hard? Because often people aren't as honest and open as they should be. Sometimes, people end up getting hurt.
Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish to care about the things that their friends need. They care about their own needs much more, which makes it hard for friendships to work. However, being selfish is part of human nature. A person is put together in order to take care of himself and his own needs, not necessarily those needs of other people. Even though being selfish is something that all humans are born with, it is something that everyone should guard against.
The best thing to remember when you are a friend to anyone is that you need to treat your friend the same way as you'd like to be treated. This is wonderful advice for a friendship, because it is really the only way to make sure that you are giving your friend everything you would want to be given in a friendship. Whenever you have a question about how you should treat a friend, it is easy to find an answer simply by asking yourself what you would like your friend to do for you, if he or she is in your shoes.
Even if you're always thinking about how you'd like to be treated, and your friends are too, there are issues that come up from time to time in each friendship, and it is important to understand how to deal with these issues so that you can build stronger and healthier friendships. Issues like friends getting boyfriends or girlfriends and not spending enough time with their friends, or even friends finding new friends and leaving old friends behind are issues that will probably come up with one or more of your friendships. It is important to know how to deal with these issues so that you can keep your friends and make new ones. No one wants to have a broken friendship.
12. Why may problems with friendships appear?
A. One is selfish.
B. One is alone.
C. One is too anxious.
D. One is too busy.
13. What's the first and most important thing to be other people's friend?
A. Not to hurt your friends' feelings.
B. To give your friends whatever you have.
C. To treat your friends as fairly as possible.
D. Not to think of your own needs any more.
14. What is the text mainly about?
A. The Meaning of Friendships
B. The Importance of Friendships
C. The Advantages of Friendships
D. The Problems with Friendships
15. What may follow the last paragraph of the text?
A. How to make many friends.
B. How to keep friends happy.
C. How to treat friends correctly.
D. How to solve friendship issues.

Survival in the Wild
Plants and animals have the hard job of surviving in a very wild world. How do they do it?___16___Camouflage(保护色) is one way animals use to survive. For some animals, this means that their fur, scales, or skin are a similar color1 to the land around them. Deer, for example, have brown fur that match(和……相匹配)the trees, so it’s harder for hunters to see them. This saves them from becoming food to a larger animal.___17___Many people think of chameleons when they think of this type of camouflage, but rabbits are a great example as well. Some rabbits’ fur will change color1 s depending on the season. Their fur might be brown in spring, summer, and autumn to match the trees, but the brown fur will fall out and white fur will grow in the winter to match the snow.___18___
Some insects, instead of matching their environment, look like something else that will stop animals from eating them. A walking stick looks just like a stick so that hunters will pass it by without noticing it.
Some moths and butterflies have designs on their wings that make them look like snakes or owls, to frighten away their hunters.
___19___They want to be easily noticed to survive! Many plants grow flowers with color1 ful petals(花瓣) to attract bees. The bees help pollinate the flowers so that they can produce new flowers.
Instead of hiding, some plants and animals develop structures to hurt anything that tries to hurt them. Some plants develop thorns(刺)so that animals will not eatthem.___20___Hedgehogs even have spikes(尖刺), called quills or spines, covering their backs so animals won’t want to eat them!
There are many ways plants and animals have adapted to survive in the wild. Do you know of any other ways?
A. Some animals have extremely sharp teeth so they can fight off other animals.
B. Some animals can actually change color1 s to match their environment.
C. As a result, the rabbit has different color1 s in different seasons.
D. There are many ways plants and animals have used in order to survive.
E. This way the rabbit is safer from hunters year-round.
F. For some plants, however, they don’t want to match their environment.
G. But some plants survive in a quite different way.
