If you want your life to stand for peace and kindness, it’s helpful to do kind, peaceful things. One of my favorite ways to do this is by developing my own helping rituals(行为). These little acts of kindness are opportunities to be of service and reminders of how good it feels to be kind and helpful.
We live in a rural area of the San Francisco Bay Area. Most of what we see is beauty and nature. One of the exceptions to the beauty is the litter that some people throw out of their windows as they are driving on the rural roads. One of the few drawbacks to living in the remote area is that public services, such as litter collection, are less available than they are closer to the city.
A helping ritual that I practice regularly with my two children is picking up litter in our surrounding area. We've become so accustomed to doing this that my daughters will often say to me in excited voices, “There’s some litter, Daddy, stop the car!” And if we have time, we will often pull over and pick it up, It may seem strange, but we actually enjoy it. We pick up litter in parks, on sidewalks, practically anywhere. Once I even saw a complete stranger picking up litter close to where we live. He smiled at me and said, “I saw you doing it, and it seemed like a good idea.”
Picking up litter is only one of endless supplies of possible helping rituals. You might like holding a door open for people, visiting lonely elderly people in nursing homes, or, shoveling snow off someone else’s driveway. Think of something that seems effortless yet helpful. It’s fun, per sonally rewarding, and sets a good example. Everyone wins.
25. What is the author dissatisfied with in his area?
A. Natural scenery.
B. Being far away from city.
C. Some people littering randomly.
D. Railway transportation.
26. How do t he author’s rituals influence others?
A. His children misunderstand him.
B. He sets a good example for others.
C. Nobody throws litter any more.
D. His family are awarded with a prize.
27. What does the text mainly convey?
A. Picking up litter is effortless.
B. Nobody wins from kindness.
C. God helps those who help themselves.
D. Little acts of kindness are helpful.

Traffic problems are an everyday concern in many cities, including Washington, D.C. A growing number of Washingtonians are turning to bicycles to get to and from work. In fact, the number of commuters(每日往返上班者)who use bicycles has doubled in the city since 2007.
Ralph Buehler teaches urban planning at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, popularly known as Virginia Tech. He has written a book about urban biking, called City Cycling. He says there is a reason why urban bike tiding is now becoming more popular.
“Over the last 60 to 70 years, cities in America have adapted to the automobile.”
“Most cities took advantage of the money coming for the interstate highway system, from the federal government, starting in 1956.There was a 90 percent federal match(补贴)so the cities only had to put up 10%. It was very tempting.”
In the years after World War Two, many Americans moved to suburban communities, just outside major cities. They decided to travel great distances to and from work in exchange for a home in the suburbs. Their cars became a symbol of freedom.
But today, many people believe they can save money by living in the city.
Greg Billing is with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. “When a person makes a change from using a car to using a bike, he/she is saving anywhere between 8 or $9,000 a year.”
Ralph Buehler says governments save mone y when people use bicycles. “Building bicycling facilities is much cheaper than building and maintaining road facilities
or public transport.”
Washington, D.C has also taken steps to protect bike riders. It approved a safe passing law and created areas on the road between cars and bikes.
The United States Census Bureau says 4%of the city’s workers ride to work by bike. The only city on the East Coast with more bike commuters is New York.

Out of every ten married couples, at least eight of them go through “emotional divorce”, due to the stresses and pressures of having a special needs child.
Explaining the emotional divorce that occurs between the husband and wife, Dr. Al Mehrazi, Chairman of the Advisory Board of Family, said, “Emotional divorce means the relationship persists but the emotions die out and there are no feelings any more. It's as if the father tries to punish the mother for that child. As a result, it can
lead to a breakdown of the family and the mother then bears the burden of the special needs child. But sometimes the mother would also abandon her special needs child and focus on her healthy children. Many mothers try to keep the care of the special needs child in the care of the housemaids with no tr aining.’’
Many families also have a very negative attitude toward having a special needs child, mainly because of the stigma (耻辱) it receives from society. As a result, they generally want to hide the fact that they have a special needs child. This often leads to abandoning or giving very little attention to the special needs child.
“This is a challenge in front of us and we need to change this. We need to develop programmes, we need qualified people to work in this field in terms of guidance in helping these families, and we have to adopt clear approaches and methods dealing with conflicts within the family. We can't let that child be a victim or a source of suffering and divorce, but would like the family to look at the child as a blessing from th e heavens.” said Dr. Al Mehrazi.
Special needs people themselves also have a lot to offer, and in some cases have represented and done more for the UAE (阿联酋) than people without disabilities. Special needs people have great power. Some special needs people from the UAE have raised the flag of this country more than some able-bodied people. Special needs people aren't miserable people.
32. Which of the following words can best describe most parents' feeling about having
a special needs child?
A. Ashamed
B. Guilty.
C. Regretful.
D. Scared.
33. In Dr Al Mehrazi's opinion, _______________.
A. special needs children help strengthen a family
B. special needs children are a mistake of the heavens
C. families with special needs children need professional guidance
D. most mothers take care of their special needs children themselves
34. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that_________.
A. special needs people are a symbol of the UAE
B. people with special needs should learn to contribute
C. having special needs doesn't necessarily mean inability
D. the disabled contribute more to the UAE than normal people
35. What can be the best title of the text?

D. Avoiding having special needs children

Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a Chinese student taking part in the exchange program in your university. I’m writing to ask for an early leave. I have been here for half a year, but I have some difficulties in adapting myself to life here, especially the daily diet. Besides, the major I’m learning here didn’t go well as expected. I even can’t understand what the teachers said in class. All mentioned above set off my homesickness and put me in low spirits. Thus, after months of frustration, I eventually decided to end this program ahead of schedule and go back to my home.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
