March 22 marks World Water Day. It celebrates water and draws people’s attention on those who are living without enough safe water. You may think that water scarcity mainly has to do with a lack of precipitation (降水), but it is also now a problem in southern China, an area in which it rains often.
In December 2021, people in Shenzhen found that water began to run more slowly from their taps (水龙头). The government said the city was facing its most serious water shortage (短缺) ever.
Some other cities in the southern part of China, like Chengdu and Guangzhou, are also becoming “thirsty”, The Paper reported. Compared with northern areas, southern China has more rain and is close to more rivers and lakes. So why are they still short on water?
In big cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou, populations are growing fast. As a result, people and factories need more and more water. Each person in Shenzhen has less than 200 cubic meters (立方米) of water each year, 1/12 of the country’s average (平均水平). According to the United Nations, it is an “absolute water shortage” (极度缺水) when the number is below 500 cubic meters.
Climate change is making the water problem worse. For example, most cities in Guangdong province depend on the Dongjiang River as their main source of water. In 2021, the river was reported to be drying up.
Because of climate change, there’s also less snow in the mountains of Tibet. The snow has long been the source of water for many parts of China. Those mountains might provide less water in the future.
There are other reasons for water shortages. For example, water pollution makes it harder to get clean drinking water. Factories and farms don’t use water efficiently (有效地). Some cities have enough rainfall, but don’t have big lakes or reservoirs (水库) to keep water so the water goes into the sea.

Confucius (551-479 BC), one of the most important Chinese philosophers (哲学家), lived during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). After all these years, his influence is still strong in modern times.
Unlike the abstract philosophy of Laozi, Confucian ideas about right and wrong are easy to understand and apply to daily life. “It’s all about the everyday. It’s all about family,” Roger Ames, a Confucius expert at Peking University, told China Daily.
For example, many Chinese learn at an early age to “be filial to parents and respectful to brothers”(入则孝,出则悌). Confucius believed that if everyone knows how to love their families, they will know how to love others, love their country, and love the world.
“Don’t do to others what you don’t want others to do to you” is the favorite Confucius doctrine (信条) of Guo Jiulin, a professor at Dalian Minzu University. “It reminds me that if a person wants to fulfill (实现) his social ambitions (抱负), he must first be strict with himself in words and deeds,”he told China Daily.
Another important Confucian idea is he, or harmony (和谐). Sun Yiting, a student from Zhejiang University, values it. “It reminds me to calm down when I get angry,” she said. “It reminds me to put myself in others’ shoes. This way of thinking makes my life much happier.”
Confucian ideas can even be applied to today’s global problems, according to Ames.
“Confucius believed that the only way I can take my stand is by helping other people take theirs (己

What makes it successful is the film highlighting(突出) a centuries-old Chinese folk art-lion dance. Thanks to the director Sun Haipeng’s personal life experience, it could reappear on screens. But it was not easy. The biggest problem lay in how to perfectly present the moves of the lion’s head through special effects. 74 This greatly affects how the hair on the lion’s head moves. So the production team bought many lion heads to watch carefully and then spent several months designing each individual hair.
75 Bands from Guangdong, like WuTiao Ren and Jiu Lian Zhen Ren, made it for the film.
