22.(8分)Solar energy systems/power plants do not produce air pollution, water pollution, or greenhouse gases. Using solar energy can have a positive, indirect effect on the environment, when solar energy replaces or reduces the use of other energy sources that have larger effects on the environment.
However, some poisonous materials and chemicals are used to make the photovoltaic (光电池的) cells that convert sunlight into electricity. Some solar thermal (保热的) systems use potentially hazardous liquids to transfer heat. Leaks of these materials could be harmful to the environment. U. S. environmental laws regulate the use and settlement of these types of materials.
As with any type of power plant, large solar power plants can affect the environment near their locations. The placement of the power plant may have long-term effects on the habitats of native plants and animals. Some solar power plant-s may require water for cleaning solar collectors and concentrators or for cooling turbine generators. Using large volumes of ground water or surface water in some dry locations may affect the ecosystems that depend on these water resources. In addition, the beam of concentrated sunlight a solar power tower creates can kill birds and insects that fly into the beam.
The amount of solar energy that the earth receives each day is many times greater than the total amount of all energy that people consume each day. However, on the
sur~ace of the earth, solar energy is a variable and irregular energy source. The amount of sunlight and the intensity of sunlight varies by time of day and location. Weather and climate conditions affect the availability of sunlight daily and on a seasonal basis. The type and size of a soIar energy collection and conversion system determines how much of the available solar energy we can convert into useful energy.
1、Which of the following best explains "hazardous" underlined in paragraph 2? A.inexpensive B.dangerous
C.ineffective D.abnormal
2、What influence can large solar power plants have on the locations?
A.Polluting the ground water.
B.Protecting the habitats of plants and animals.
C.Damaging the local natural balance.
D.Attracting birds and insects to the area.
3、What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Different areas receive different amount of solar energy.
B.How to convert solar energy into useful energy.
C.The relationship between solar energy collection and the sunlight.
D.Some factors that influence the amount of solar energy collection.
4、What does the author think of the solar energy systems?
A.They are totally environment-friendly.
B.They have both advantages and disadvantages.
C.They should be forbidden in the future.
D.They shouId be encouraged in quantities.
23.(8分)Teenagers who check social media for several hours a day are at the risk ofdeveloping ADHD (多动症), a study has concluded.
The research team, from the University of Southern California, tracked
2,600teenagers aged 15 and 16. They asked them how many times they checked theirphones and other digital devices for various reasons, and then monitored them for symptoms of ADHD.After two years, those who had checked their phones the mostoften were twice as likely as those who checked the least often to show signs ofADHD.
Writing in the JAMA medical journal, the scientists sai d, “Modern mediadevices immediately inform users when new text messages, social media postings, or videogame play invitations arrive. Exposure to such information may drawattention away from important tasks. Frequent distraction could interrupt thedevelopment of constant attention and organization skills.”
They believe constant access to instant entertainment also has an impact. Researcher Professor Adam Leventhal said all previous research had focused on the link between ADHD and televisions. “What’s new i s that previous studies on thistopic were done many years ago, when social media, mobile phones, tablets andmobile apps didn’t exist. We can say with confidence that teens who are exposedto higher levels of digital media are significantly more likely to de velop ADHDsymptoms in the future,” he said.
Leventhal believes the findings help fill a gap in understanding how newmobile media devices and seemingly limitless content pose a mental health risk forchildren. And the findings serve as a warning.
British scientists welcomed the findings. But Professor Andy Przybylski of theOxford Internet Institute said, “The study relies on survey responses provided bythe students in question. It is not clear if teachers or parents would rate the childrensimilarly or if the self-reported measure of digital screen use is related with eitheractual behavior or higher quality survey items.”
1、How did the researchers conduct the study?
A.By monitoring 2,600 teenagers with ADHD.
B.By tracking the participants for two years.
C.By analyzing data from previous researches online.
D.By controlling different teens’ time spent on social media.
2、What does Leventhal think of the exposure to higher levels of digital media?
A.It will cause diverse ADHD symptoms.
B.It will create higher ADHD risks.
C.It will weaken teenagers’ confidence.
D.It will have a major influence on organization skills.
3、What does Professor Andy Przybylski think of the study?
A.It provides a better understanding of the media.
B.It should have focused on parents’ responses.
C.Its findings are not reliable enough.
D.It’s a breakthrough in this field.
4、What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The use of digital media is on the rise
B.Teens are increasingly exposed to ADHD
C.Heavy use of social media may increase ADHD risks
D.Teens’ exposure to modern media calls more attention
24.(8分)Robots make me nervous—especially the ones which seem to think for themselves. I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, felt the same way.
Gates said in an interview with the social networking and news website Reddit: “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage well.
A few decades after that, though, the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern.”
Well, maybe I don’t have to worry about my computer and kitchen equipment yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off. There’s a terrible thought!
Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil like some we’ve seen in sci-fi movies. What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient. That’s what philosopher Nick Bostrom from Oxford University believes. He says that machines are indifferent to humans and in pursuit of their own goals, the destruction of people might be just additional damage. Bostrom gives us an example: A machine which might have its only goal to produce as many paperclips as possible might look at human bodies as extra material for paperclips and go after you. Because it is, well, a machine, it would not take pity on you.
It’s a good thing that American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and left us his three rules of robotics. They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow the human being to come to harm.
I’m glad my machines at home are “dumb”. All my cleaner wants to take over is the carpet in my living room. Let’s hope they don’t create an appliance which wants to take over the world!
1、The author quoted Bill Gates’ words in Paragraph 2 in order to make the
text________.
A.better-known B.more persuasive
C.better-organized D.more interesting
2、An intelligent paperclip machine would harm us because _______.
A.it is much cleverer than us B.it would take over the world
C.it has the strong feeling of destroying us D.it would see us just as material
3、How does the author feel about Isaac Asimov’s rules of robotics?
A.Optimistic B.Worried
C.Disappointed D.Regretful
4、What does the text mainly focus on?
A.The benefits of future robots. B.The new applications of robots.
C.The concern for super intelligence. D.The popularity of robots in the future.

(10分)My motivation for starting our family tradition of reading in the car was purely selfish: I could not bear listening to A Sesame Street Christmas for another 10 hours. My three children had been addicted to this cassette on our previous summer’s road trip.
As I began to prepare for our next 500-mile car trip, I came across a book Jim Trelease’s The Read Aloud Handbook. This could be the answer to my problem. I thought. So I put Roald dahl’s James and the Giant Peach into my bag. When I began to read aloud the tale of the boy who escapes the bad guys by hiding inside a giant peach, my three kids argued and wrestled in their seats. But after several lines, they were attracted into the rhythm of the words and began to listen.
We soon learned that the simple pleasure of listening to a well-written book makes the long miles pass more quickly. Sometimes the books we read became highlights of the trip. I read Wilson Rawls’s Summer of the Monkeys as we spent two days driving to the beach. We arrived just behind the power crews restoring (恢复) electricity after a tropical storm. The rain continued most of the week, and the beach was covered with oil washed up by the storm. When we returned home, I asked my son what he liked about the trip. He answered without hesitation, “The book you read in the car.”
Road trips still offer challenges, even though my children now are teenagers. But we continue to read as we roll across the country. And I'm beginning to see that reading aloud has done more than help pass the time. For at least a little while, we are not shut
in our own ele ctronic worlds. And maybe we’ve started something that will pass on to the next generation.
1、Why did the author start reading in the car?
A.She wanted to have a better journey. B.She wanted to keep a family tradition C.Her children were addicted to music. D.She wanted to kill the time.
2、How did the children react after the author read a few lines?
A.They kept quarrelling. B.They hid themselves.
C.They soon settled down. D.They continued to fight in their seats.
3、What can we learn about the author and her family’s trip to the beach?
A.They were caught in a storm. B.They enjoyed reading on the road. C.They had a good time on the beach. D.They thought it had passed too quickly.
4、Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Better Reading than Traveling B.Books that Changed My Children C.Road Trips Full of Challenges D.Reading Makes Great Road Trips
