In Scotland, the holiday is often called "Gowkie Day". In Iraq, the holiday is called "Kithbet Neesan” or "April Lie".History experts say people have celebrated April Fools’ Day for a long time. However, research suggests that we like something strictly because we have chosen it. In other words, we dislike things we don't choose. And this phenomenon has existed since we were babies. In an experiment, US researchers brought several 10-to-20-month-old babies into a lab and gave them two same bright and colorful soft blocks to play with. They set each block far apart, so the babies had to crawl (爬)to one or the other — a random choice. After the baby chose one of the toys, the researchers took it away and came back with a new option. The babies could then pick either the toy they didn't play with before, or a brand-new toy.It turned out that the babies reliably chose to play with the new toy rather than the one they had not chosen. In follow-up experiments, when researchers instead helped choose which toy the baby would play with, the phenomenon disappeared. "As if they were saying, 'Hmm. I didn't choose that object last time, because I guess 1 didn't like it very much'" said Lisa Feigenson, co-author of the study. This is a very important phenomenon in life, Feigenson noted. Adults will less like the thing they didn't choose, even if they had no real preference in the first place. It looks like babies do just the same.It shows that the act of making choices changes how we feel about our options. The random (随意的)choices might become our preferences. "They are really not choosing based on what they prefer." said Alex Silver, co-author of the study. This new finding explains why adults build unconscious preference when they make choices between the same things. Justifying (证明有道理)choice is somehow important to the human experience, chose this, so Imust like it. I didn't choose this other thing, so it can not be so good. Adults make these conclusions unconsciously, Feigenson said.Such tendency makes sense to us as we live in a consumer culture and must make so many choices every day, between everything from toothpaste brands to styles of jeans.Next, researchers will look at whether too many choices could be a problem for babies as they certainly arefor adults.32. What is the purpose of the experiments?A. To test whether people choose what they like.B. To see why babies prefer new toys to old ones.C. To explain how babies and adults make choices differently.D. To study if too many choices could create problems for people33. What can be learned from the experiments?A. Babies prefer bright and colorful toys.B. Babies' preference largely affects their choices.C. Babies prefer adults to help them make choices.D. Babies' previous random choices affect their preference.34. Why is the new finding important in life?A. It entirely changes our attitude to our choices.B. It helps us make wise decisions in a consumer culture.C, It promotes the relationship between adults and babies.D.It helps us understand our unconscious preference for choices.35. What can be the best title for the text?A. Babies Like What They ChooseB. Random Choices MatterC Too Many Choices Puzzle the Adults D. Preference Affects the Choice第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

He invented the printing press, which drastically altered the way books were produced and distributed. Before the printing press, books were copied by hand, a time-consuming and expensive process. The invention of the printing press allowed for the mass production of books, leading to an explosion in literacy and the spread of knowledge.Gutenberg’s printing press used movable type, which could be reused and rearranged to create different texts. This made the process of printing much faster and more efficient. The first book to be printed using this method was the Bible, which was completed in 1455. The widespread availability of the Bible and other religious texts led to a significant increase in religious literacy among the common people. The printing press also had a profound impact on the spread of science andtechnology. It allowed scientists to share their discoveries more quickly and widely, which accelerated the pace of innovation. The printing press was instrumental in the Renaissance, a period of great cultural and intellectual growth in Europe.1、What was the main impact of Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press?A、It increased the cost of book production.B、It made books more expensive for the general public.C、It significantly changed the way books were produced and distributed.D、It decreased the literacy rate among the common people.答案:C2、How did the printing press affect the production of books?A、It made books more difficult to produce.B、It required more manual labor to produce books.C、It allowed for the mass production of books.D、It made books more expensive to produce.答案:C3、Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a consequence of the printing press?A、An increase in religious literacy.B、The spread of science and technology.C、The decline of the Renaissance.D、A faster pace of innovation.答案:C4、What was the first book printed using Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press?A、The QuranB、The Declaration of IndependenceC、The Gutenberg BibleD、The Magna Carta答案:C第四题Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. The Rise of Social MediaIn the last decade, social media has become an integral part of our daily lives. When they need advice, they don’t usually ask people they know. Instead, many Americans write letters to newspapers and magazines in which advice is given on many subjects, including family problems, the use of language, health, cooking, child care, clothes, how to buy a house or a car, and so on.Most newspapers regularly print letters from readers with problems. Along with the letters are answers written by people who are supposed to solve〔解决〕such problems. Some of these writers are doctors; others are lawyers or educators. But two of the most famous writers of advice are women without special training for this kind of work. One of them answers letters addressed to “Dear Abby〞. The other is addressed as “Dear Ann Landers〞. Experience is their preparation for giving advice. There is one writer who has not lived long enough to have much experience. She is a girl named Angel Caveliere, who started writing advice for newspaper readers at the age of ten. Her advice to young readers, now appears regularly in the Philadelphia Bulletin in a column called DEAR ANGEL.11. Two Famous Women WritersB. Angel Caveliere and Her AdviceC. Getting Advice from StrangersD. The Strange AmericansDDuring the twentieth century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old and up. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to livea further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until sixty. This important change in women’s life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women economic〔经济的〕position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married their school-leaving age is sixteen. Many girls stay at school after that age, and though women marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to fuller part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage〔婚姻〕, with the husband acceptinga greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.16. We are told that in a family about 1900 ______.A. few children died before they were fiveB. seven or eight children lived to be more than fiveC. the youngest child would be fifteenD. four or five children died when they were five17. One reason why the woman of today may take a job is that she ______.A. is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselvesB. does not like children herselfC. needn’t worry about food for her childrenD. can be free from family duties when she reaches sixty18. Many girls are now likely to ______.A. give up their jobs for good after they are marriedB. leave school as soon as they canC. marry so that they can get a jobD. continue working until they are going to have a baby19. AThey were a happy family:four daughters were all in the same school in different grades. The youngest,Janice, who was in my class, seemed to be glued(粘) to her mother’s skirts. The three older girls took the bus to school every morning, but Janice was always driven to school by her mother. One Friday,Janice’s mother asked for a talk with me.She said in a soft voice,“My husband is going to Europe on business for two weeks, and he insists that I go with him.I have tried to explain over and over that Janice needs me here. But he thinks that she will be fine without me so I have no choice;I have to go.I have told the babysitter to drive her every morning. Will you please give Janice special attention and help her? I want to be sure everything goes well for her.”I told her that we would make every effort to support Janice.I even volunteered to meet Janice at her car so she would see a familiar face.As a mother myself,I’d like to help.Janice’s mother thanked me for my understanding. On Monday morning, expecting a tearful, anxious child,I planned a special program of fun and games.I waited outside to greet Janice, but just then the bus arrived and not three, but four girls got off.Janice skipped along joyfully, saying “goodbye” to her sisters as she ran with two friends into the classroom.I walked slowly into the classroom and called Janice over to ask how the bus ride went.Impatiently she said,“Oh,I always want to take the bus with the other kids, but Mother needs to be with me.You see there won’t be any more babies,so I have to be a baby a little longer. While she is away,I’ll just ride the bus every day.I am five, you know.”21.Why did Janice’s mother want to have a talk with the author?A.To ask her to help Janice with her homework.B.To ask her to pick up Janice every day. C.To ask her to give Janice more attention.D.To ask her to meet Janice at her car. 22.What did the author not do for Janice?A.Plan a special program of fun and games.B.Wait for her outside the school. C.Greet her when she got off the bus.D.Ask about her bus ride.23.What do we know from the passage?A.Janice is too young to go to school by bus.B.Janice likes taking a bus to school. C.Janice doesn’t like her babysitter.D.Janice is no longer a child.BAttitudes toward new technologies often fall along generational lines. That is,generally, younger people tend to outnumber older people in face of a technological shift. It is not always the case, though. When you look at attitudes toward driverless cars, there doesn’t seem to be a clear generational divide. The public overall disagree on whether they’d like to use a driverless car.In a study last year,of all people surveyed,48 percent said they wanted to ride in one, while 50 percent did not.The fact that attitudes toward selfdriving cars appear to be so steady across generations suggests how transformative the shift to driverless cars could be.Not everyone wants a driverless car now—and no one can get one yet—but among those who are open to them, every age group is similarly engaged. When it comes to driverless cars, differences in attitude are obvious based on factors not related to age.College graduates, for example, are particularly interested in driverless cars compared with those who have less education:59 percent of college graduates said they would like to use a driverless car compared with 38 percent of those with a highschool diploma or less.Where a person lives matters, too.More people who lived in cities and suburbs said they wanted to try driverless cars than those who lived in rural areas. While there’s reason to believe that interest in selfdriving cars is going up,a person’s age will have little to do with how selfdriving cars can become mainstream.Once driverless cars are actually available for sale, the early adopters will be the people who can afford to buy them. 24.What usually happens when a new technology appears?A.It benefits society greatly.B.The old are not happy with it.C.People of different ages react differently.D.It will separate the old from the young. 25.What does the author say about the driverless car?A.It makes people’s life more convenient.B.It can lead to fewer road accidents.C.It may start a revolution in the car industry.D.It does not seem to create a generational divide.26.Who are the most potential customers of the driverless car?A.The seniors. B.The wealthy.C.The educated. D.The car lovers.CDeveloped by researchers and designers specializing in typography(印刷术) and behavioral science,Sans Forgetica is a new font(字体) designed to help readers better remember theinformation they read by forcing them to spend a bit more time on each word. The design of Sans Forgetica is based on a font called Albion, but with substantial modifications(修改) to reduce familiarity and attain its goal of engaging the brain more and helping the reader retain (保留) more information. It was developed by scientists at RMIT University in Melbourne,Australia, who believe it could help students studying for exams.“We believe this is the first time that specific principles of design theory have been combined with specific principles of psychology theory in order to create a font,”Behavioral economist Jo Peryman told DW.If fonts are too familiar, readers often glance over them without their brain creating any memories of what was read.At the same time,if a font is too outlandish, the brain has to struggle too much to decipher(破译) it while neglecting the retention of information.According to its developers,“Sans Forgetica lies at a sweet spot where just enough obstacle has been added to create that memory retention.”Its modifications force readers to spend more time, but not too much time, reading each word, allowing the brain to engage in deeper cognitive processing. So does Sans Forgetica actually work? Does it help readers better remember the information they read? So far, studies have shown that it can make a difference, although not a significant one.One experiment had 96 participants recall word pairs presented in three different fonts. They remembered 69 percent of the word pairs written in Sans Forgetica, compared to 61 percent for the other fonts. In a different experiment,303 students took a mock(模拟) multiplechoice exam, and whenever the text was presented in Sans Forgetica, they remembered 57 percent of the text, compared to only 50 percent of the surrounding text written in Arial font.So Sans Forgetica won’t give you the memory of an elephant, but if you’re the kind of person who believes every little bit helps,it might be worth a try.27.What can we know about the new font?A.It is not beneficial to the study.B.It is more advanced than Albion font.C.It’s based on principles of psychology theory.D.It helps readers better remember the information.28.What does the underlined word “outlandish” in Paragraph 4 mean?A.Strange. B.Contradictory.C.Splendid. D.Ugly.29.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?A.Why Sans Forgetica is popular.B.The disadvantages of the new font.C.How Sans Forgetica works.D.The unique character of the new font. 30.Why are two experiments mentioned in Paragraph 6?A.To advertise the new font.B.To prove Sans Forgetica is effective.C.To show Arial font is successful.D.To explain how Sans Forgetica serves readers.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Here are some major reasons for such a decision.1.The health reasonMedical studies prove that a vegetarian diet is easier to digest, provides a wider range of nutrients(营养) and has fewer burdens on the body. Vegetarians are less influenced by all the major diseases, and thus live longer, healthier, more productive lives. They have fewer physical plaints, less frequent visits to the doctor, and smaller medical bills. In a word, they are in the most natural conditions of life.2. __________________Planet earth is suffering. In large measure, the great loss of species, destruction of ancient rainforests to create lands where animals can feed on grass, loss of top soils, and the increase of water impurities(杂质) and air pollution have a mon cause which is the single fact of meat in the human diet. No single decision that we can make as individuals or as a race can have such a dramatic effect on the improvement of our planetary ecology(生态) as the decision not to eat meat. Many seeking to save the planet for future generations have made this decision for this reason and this reason alone.3.The economic reasonThe simple fact is that to produce 1 kilogram of meat, it requires over 16 kilograms of grain and much more water. Frank decided he did not want to be farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract people’s interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品 ) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store., selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly from the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placedan order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman! There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green - a strange world indeed.Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color. Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow.A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.66. The passage is mainly about _____________.A. color and its surprising effects.B. women being luckier than menC. danger caused by color blindnessD. color blindness67. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen anote-“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”-and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk wouldmagically appear. All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery. There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊). Every so often my son’s friend s will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.29. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer____.A. to show his magical power.B. to pay for the deliveryC. to satisfy his curiosity.D. to please his mother.30. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s houseA. He wanted to have tea there.B. He was a respectable person.C. He was treated as a family member.D. He was fully trusted by the family.31. Why does home milk delivery no longer existA. Nobody wants to be a milkman now.B. It has been driven out of the market.C. Its service is getting poor.D. It is forbidden by law.32. Why did the author bring back home an old milk boxA. He missed the good old days.B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.C. He missed it for his milk bottles.D. He planted flowers in it.CMonkeys seem to have a way with numbers.A team of researchers trained three Rhesus monkeys to associate 26 clearly different symbols consisting of numbers and selective letters with 0-25 drops of water or juice as a reward. The researchers then tested how the monkeys combined—or added—the symbols to get the reward. Here's how Harvard Medical School scientist Margaret Livingstone, who led the team, described the experiment: In their cages the monkeys were provided with touch screens. On one part of the screen, a symbol would appear, and on the other side two symbols inside a circle were shown. For example, the number 7 would flash on one side of the screen and the other end would have 9 and 8. If the monkeys touched the leftside of the screen they would be rewarded with seven drops of water or juice; if they went for the circle, they would be rewarded with the sum of the numbers—17 in this example. After running hundreds of tests, the researchers noted that the monkeys would go for the higher values more than half the time, indicating that they were performing a calculation, not just memorizing the value of each combination. When the team examined the results of the experiment more closely, they noticed that the monkeys tended to underestimate(低估)a sum compared with a single symbol when the two were close in value—sometimes choosing, for example, a 13 over the sum of 8 and 6. The underestimation was systematic: When adding two numbers, the monkeys always paid attention to the larger of the two, and then added only a fraction(小部分)of the smaller number to it."This indicates that there is a certain way quantity is represented in their brains, "Dr. Livingstone says. “But in this experiment what they're doing is paying more attention to the big number than the little one.”33. What did the researchers do to the monkeys before testing themA. They fed them.B. They named them.C. They trained them.D. They measured them.34. How did the monkeys get their reward in the experimentA. By drawing a circle.B. By touching a screen.C. By watching videos.D. By mixing two drinks.35. What did Livingstone's team find about the monkeysA. They could perform basic addition.B. They could understand simple words.C. They could memorize numbers easily.D. They could hold their attention for long.36. In which section of a newspaper may this text appearA. Entertainment.B. Health.C. Education.D. Science.DWe’ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence. What’s the problem It’s p ossible that we all have compromised conversational intelligence. It’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s awkward and challenging, or we think it’s annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, co nsider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits.Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can’t forget that deep relationships wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for casual conversation. Small talk is the grease(润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute atIndiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction(互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that ta lking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,” says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral(边缘的) members of our social network matter for ourwell-being also.”Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners,” he says.37. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraphA. Addiction to smartphones.B. Impatience with slow service.C. Inappropriate behaviours in public places.D. Absence of communication between strangers.38. What is important for successful small talk according to CarducciA. Showing good manners.B. Focusing on a topic.C. Relating to other people.D. Making business deals.39. What does the coffee-shop study suggest about small talkA. It improves family relationships.B. It makes people feel good.C. It matters as much as a formal talk.D. It raises people’s confidence.40.
