高一英语阅读理解强化训练Day 30Passage 1Recently, the TV show Where Are We Going, Dad? has become one of China's most popular TV shows, attracting more than 600 million viewers each week.In this program, five celebrity (名人) fathers traveled to six countryside locations across China, including some villages in Beijing, Yunnan, Shandong, Hunan, Heilongjiang and a desert in Ningxia. They took care of their kids without the help of the kid's mothers. At the same time, they also took part in different kinds of activities with their kids together, such as cooking, fishing and selling goods. Why is the show so popular? "It reflects (反应) social reality. In big cities, fathers are always busy earning money and making achievements in their career. They don't spare more time with their kids. " said Xie Dikui, general director of the show. As the father of a 3-year-old daughter, Xie said that he found his own heart being touched as he made it. "Although these fathers are busy, they are able to spare time for their kids. We can do better than them. "This also happens in some rural areas in China. More and more men from rural areas are now working in big cities, leaving their kids at home under the Grandparents' care. "I have a son and a daughter in my hometown. " said Xu Canyong, a 33-year-old man working in Shantou, Guangdong Province. "They come to live with me only during summer and winter vacations. I miss them very much. I want to have them live with us in Shantou, but the cost of living here is too high. " said Xu.1. The TV show Where Are We Going, Dad? is popular mainly because ________ .A. the five fathers are all famous starsB. there are many beautiful sights in itC. Xie Dikui is a popular director in ChinaD. it reflects the problems about family education2. The underlined word "This" in Paragraph 4 refers to ________ .A. the TV show Where Are We Going, Dad?B. the fact that fathers have less time with their kidsC. the trip of five celebrity fathers with their kidsD. the relationship between Xie Dikui and his daughter3. Xu Canyong can't live with his two kids in Shantou because ________ .A. he can't afford to live there togetherB. he has no time to look after his kidsC. Shantou is too far from his hometownD. his kids are used to living with their grandparents4. From this passage, we may infer ________ .A. fathers will raise the kids instead of mothersB. the five celebrity fathers will give up their own jobsC. in some rural areas, more and more kids live with their grandparentsD. Mr Xu often goes back to his hometown during summer and winter vacationsPassage 2You've probably heard about sports coaches, fitness coaches, voice and musicteachers, career counselors, psychiatrists(精神病医师) and other specialists who teach skills and help us cope with daily life. But there's a rapidly growing kind of professional who does a little bit of everything. She or he is called a "life coach". People who are at crossroads in their lives, and corporations that want to give certain employees a career boost, are turning to them for help. The idea that one person's success story can change other people's lives for the better goes back at least to the 1930s. Dale Carnegie's famous self-improvement program "How to Win Friends and Influence People" came along soon thereafter. But this new style of life coaches includes more than enthusiastic speakers or writers. They use their own experiences in business, sports, military service, or psychotherapy (心理疗法)to help others make critical life decisions. They often give their approach a slogan, such as "energy coaching" or "fearless living" or "working yourself happy".Dave Lakhani in Boise, Idaho, for instance, works with salespeople to develop what he calls a "road map". He says an ongoing relationship with a coach is like having a personal fitness trainer for one's career and life outside work.Lakhani's Bold Approach coaching firm also donates some of its time to help people who are anything but successful—including battered women and struggling single mothers. But others in the so-called "helping professions" are not thrilled about the life-coaching movement. They say that anyone, trained or untrained, can call himself orherself a life coach, and that slick(华而不实的) promoters who mess with people's lives can do more harm than good.1. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? ________A. Working Yourself HappyB. Life Coaches Help with Tough DecisionsC. How to Cope with Daily Life with Life CoachesD. The Life-Coaching Movement2. The underlined phrase "life coach" in Paragraph 2 means "________ ".A. The career counselor who teaches skillsB. The psychiatrist who helps us cope with daily lifeC. The fitness coach who teaches us lessonsD. The specialist who helps us make important life decisions3. The last paragraph is mainly about ________.A. the introductions of life coachB. the disagreements of life coachC. the effects of life coachD. the experiences of life coach4. What is the author's attitude towards life coaches? ________A. CautiousB. ApprovingC. CasualD. DisapprovingPassage 3If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how "foolish" the Finnish people are.Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety. The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge. The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly. With so many loopholes(漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take "petty advantages". But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real "gentleman".In a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others?1. We can know from the passage that in Finland ________ .A. both hotel guests and outside diners are served food free of chargeB. big hotels provide meals for all kinds of dinersC. guests can't enjoy free food even if they stayed in the hotelD. big hotels are mostly poorly managed2. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? ________A. Generally speaking, in Finland, workers can get more pay by working long hours.B. The bosses are too busy to check the working hours of their employees.C. The workers are always honest with their working hours.D. The workers and their bosses will make an agreement in advance about the pay.3. The underlined word "those" in the 5th paragraph probably refers to people ________ .A. who often take taxisB. who often have meals in big hotelsC. who are dishonestD. who are on guard against others4. It can be concluded that ________ .A. Finnish people are really foolish in daily lifeB. Finland has been a good place for cheatsC. the Finnish society is of very high moral levelD. all the Finns are rich and therefore honestPassage 4This summer, I went to Sports Camp with my little brother, Charlie. When we hiked to the pond, I was the only one who didn’t jump in. “Can’t you swim, Brandon?” asked Henry. I can, but after you've seen pond water under a microscope(显微镜), you’re less eager to cool off in it.Tonight after sundown, we’re playing Capture the Flag. The campers are divided into two teams, Blue and Red. Each team hides a flag, then has an hour to find and take the other team’s flag. Charlie and I are on the Blue team. When Kenneth, our team captain, asks who wants to scout out the Red flag. My brother raises his hand.Charlie goes with a bunch of boys from our team. The rest of us stay behind to guard our flag, which we've hidden in a nearby tree. Soon, Charlie is back, his face as red as paint. “All the others were caught. But I saw their flag!” he pants. “Inside the door of the director’s cabin!”Kenneth waves us over. “Time’s running out. Any ideas?”“I’ll stay with Charlie and Isaiah and guard our flag, ” offers Henry.Kenneth points to Marshall and me. “let’s go. ” he says.We run through the woods. Unluckily, two boys from the Red team noticed Kenneth and Marshall, and they were caught. I hide behind a tree and try to figure out which cabin is the director’s.A whistle sounds, and my heart beats fast. Only five minutes left! No time to checkevery cabin. Which one is the right one? Suddenly, I smell something familiar. The director's after--shave! I’m sure of it.I climb up the steps and open the door. The flag!“Get him!” Someone shouts.I grab the flag and race for our home base. Two boys from the Red team are right behind me. I reach our home base just before I hear the final whistle blow loud and long. Blue wins!1. Why doesn’t the writer want to swim in the pond?A. He can’t swim.B. The weather is not hot.C. British Town Banning Plastic BagsPassage 5Eating out is such a pleasure ― the food, the wine, the joy of having it all brought to you by someone else ― that it's a pity to ruin the experience by sharing it with other people.Well, I do like visiting restaurants with friends. But dining out alone has its own very special attractions. For a start you can give all your attention to the food. There's nothing worse than having to invent and deliver an opinion on school league tables orSanchez's move to Manchester United, plus listen to everyone else's opinions, when all you really want to do is enjoy each mouthful along the way.A second great thing about eating out alone is the chance to combine food with one of life's other true pleasures: reading. You have to plan this carefully: Indian or Chinese restaurants are best ― you need food you can eat with just one hand, leaving the other free to hold your reading material. But perhaps the biggest attraction of a table for one is the chance it gives to people-watching. Restaurants and the different reasons for visiting them ― first date, business meeting, night out with friends ― produce human behavior of surprising richness and variety. Will the man selling his business idea get any joy out of his possible investor (投资者)? Will the married couple think of anything to say to each other before their main courses arrive? This "human zoo" part of eating out alone is one of the reasons I'd hate to be famous: everyone would be watching you, so you wouldn't be able to watch them. The snooker player Steve Davis says this was one of the strangest consequences (后果) of becoming well-known: he got very worried about his eating in public, almost to the level of doubting whether he was "doing it right. "So next time you're considering your eating out choices, remember the advice of the businessman Nubar Gulbenkian: "The best number for a dinner party is two ― myself and a super head waiter. "1. What does the text mainly talk about?A. The reasons for eating out alone.B. The trouble with eating in public.C. The suggestions about dining out.D. The fear of making dining choices.2. What is the best part of dining out alone?A. One can fix one's eyes on the food.B. One can enjoy reading while eating.C. One is likely to come across famous people.D. One is given the chance to watch other diners3. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 5?A. Steve Davis cared too much about table manners.B. Famous people are always the center of attention.C. Being famous may ruin the joy of eating out alone.D. Being watched seems far better than watching others.4. What is suggested at the end of the text?A. Dining with friends.B. Chatting over dinner.C. Having a table for one.D. Sharing a table with a waiter.参考答案Passage 11. D主旨大意题。

高一英语阅读理解强化训练Day 39

高一英语阅读理解强化训练Day 39Passage 1Four "Fun facts" that are complete lies, but you believe themNo. 1 You can see the Great Wall of China from spaceThis seems right, doesn't it? The Great Wall of China is huge, after all, and you can see large things from far away. But even from a low orbit, it's pretty much invisible(看不见的) to the naked eye, and not exactly easy to pick out with an advanced camera lens. Strangely, this myth(谬论) existed before we even went into space, so it had the opportunity to become a "fact" before it could even be checked. There are many other man-made objects visible from space, but because the Great Wall is made from rocks gathered in the surrounding area, it doesn't stand out against the landscape enough to be visible. How Stuff Works helpfully suggests that China could paint the wall in hot pink to fix the matter.No. 2 Einstein failed at schoolEinstein, the modern archetypal genius(天才), failing at school is a "fact" which serves as an encouragement to under-performing schoolchildren and is repeated by motivational speakers wanting to make some point about failure and success. It would be fairly comforting if true, but reality doesn't tend to care about how comfortable you are. There are versions of this myth focusing on maths, but in either case, it's just not true. The myth seems to result from the fact that the grading system used in his school was changed the year after he left—from 1 being the highest mark to 6 being the highest. Einstein got 1s, but to anybody looking back at his grades, it would seem like that meanthe'd failed.No. 3__________________Many people claim that if you wake someone when they're sleepwalking, the shock of finding themselves not in bed will lead them to suffer a heart attack or otherwise do some serious damage. In actual fact, waking somebody who is sleepwalking does them no harm whatsoever. They might be a little confused. In fact, they could hurt themselves by continuing to sleepwalk freely, for obvious reasons. So, it's better to guide a sleepwalker back to bed without waking, but if you do wake him, it won't do any harm.No. 4 Sharks don't get cancerThis fact has gained acceptance despite having merely been invented as a reason for selling people shark cartilage pills as a cancer cure. Firstly, even if it was true that sharks didn't get cancer, that wouldn't mean that using a part of it was a cure or treatment for cancer. There were some initial positive results, but they were also gained with other animal cartilages and didn't translate into a reliable treatment. In short, eating shark cartilage pills does nothing for cancer patients. And to pile more stupidity on top of it, sharks clearly do get cancer.1. Why are we unable to see the Great Wall directly in space? ________A. The colour of the rocks is not hot pink.B. Advanced cameras are not employed.C. It's too small to stand out from far away.D. The Great Wall is made from nearby rocks.2. What does the underlined sentence in No. 2 mean? ________A. Failure is the mother of success.B. Reality has something to do with fantasy.C. Success and failure should be both experienced.D. Assumption is one thing, but reality is another.3. Which of the following may be the subtitle of No. 3? ________A. Sleepwalkers might be at a lossB. Sleepwalkers might attack othersC. Waking sleepwalkers will harm themD. Waking sleepwalkers will shock them4. Who are more likely to benefit from the lie "Sharks don't get cancer"? ________A. Drug providers.B. Health advisors.C. Cancer patients.D. Shark researchers.Passage 2Mini Book ExcerptsBiographyWhen Salinger learned that a car park was to be built on the land, the middle-aged writer was shocked and quickly bought the neighboring area to protect it. Although it has yet to be discovered, we may be closer than ever to finding a way that can slowdown the aging(衰老) process.A recent study by researchers from Duke University in the US found that cutting one's daily intake(摄入) of calories could slow down biological aging, which means you might be able to keep your youthful looks a little longer. Previous research has shown that calorie restrictions(限制) slow aging in fires and mice. So research wondered if it could have the same effect on people. To find out, Daniel Belsky and her team examined data from a study by the National Institute on Aging, based in the US. During the two-year study, 145 people in the restriction group cut their calorie intake by 25 percent. At the same time, 75 people in the control group keep their normal diets. At the start of the study, the two groups had no difference in biological age. The average participant(参与者) was 38 years old, with a biological age of 37. However, after each 12-month period, participants in the restriction group saw an increase in biological age by an average of 0. 11 years. Those in the control group saw a rise by an average of 0. 71 years. The researchers believe the difference between these groups shows that cutting calories does slow biological aging.Although they didn't explain the reason behind this, researchers at Brigham Young University in the US explained after they had a similar study on mice. They believe fewer calories slow down a mechanism(机制) in cells(细胞) called the ribosome(核糖体), at least in mice. The mechanism is responsible for making vital proteins(蛋白质) in cells, but with fewer calories it slows down, giving it more time to repair itself. The ribosome is like a car, and it needs to replace the parts that wear out the fastestfrom time to time, according to John Price, a biochemistry professor at Brigham Young University. "When tires wear out(磨损), you don't throw the whole car away and buy new ones. It's easier to replace the tires. " Price said. But this doesn't mean that people who want to look younger should miss meals, especially given the study's early stage, Price explained.1. The purpose of the research was to________A. invent technology that keeps people young and healthy.B. find the most effective way to control calories intake.C. explain why people have to keep a normal diet.D. test the effect of calories restrictions on aging.2. Which of the following is TRUE about the experiment? ________A. Some participants were asked to cut the amount of food they meals.B. There is a bigger increase in the biological age of the control group.C. All the participants of the two groups were of the same age at the start.D. Flies and mice were used to compare with the results of the human test.3. We can infer from the text that________ .A. those who want to stay young are not advised to miss mealsB. people should keep a record of the energy they burn every dayC. we could slow our biological aging by changing our eating habitsD. keeping a balance diet is not as difficult as people have imaginedPassage 4Winners ClubYou choose to be a winner! The Winners Club is a bank account specially designed for teenagers. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries. Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog’s legs. However, they did not haveenough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places. This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn’t last long. The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately. The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(杀虫剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left. Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases. Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.1. 高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 233Passage 1Do you have a spare room in your house? What about a driveway for your car? Both of these can help you make money. Many people who are feeling the pinch are taking advantage of what’s been called the “sharing economy”.Perhaps the best-known example of a company in this field is Airbnb---an American web business which allows you to rent out your spare room to holidaymakers. It says it operates in 34,000 cities and it has over 1,500,000 listings. It seems to have concerned the market!A British company is doing something with parking spaces. JustPark’s founder, Anthony Eskinazi, says, “When I had the original idea, Ispotted a driveway close to a sports stadium. It would have been so convenient if I could have just parked in that driveway rather than in commercial car park.” And he has a big clientele(客户):around 20,000 people have advertised their spaces on the site, and he says around half a million drivers use it. There are other sites doing very similar things, like Uber and Lyft---these let drivers share their cars with other passengers. Any driver knows how valuable a place to park is. A church near Kings Cross in central London has apparently made over £200,000 by renting out space in its yard to travelers!Because this is a new business world, those rules aren’t there yet and many people are happy to share.. . as long as it pays! But the sharing economy has its critics: the competitors of these new companies. People who run things like traditional B&B, commercial car parks and taxi services areafraid of ending up out of pocket. And there is another issue: regulations on these new business are unclear. Four years later when it was time to renew my license I was a married woman. Henry and I were living in Baltimore, Maryland. Two weeks before my 20th birthday, Henry drove me to the motor vehicleoffice on a hot July afternoon. When I got to the office and showed to the man behind the counter my North Carolina driver's license, ready to renew, the man told me that I was under age by Maryland law since I was not yet 21. "Mr. Henry Smith, your husband, will have to sign for you, " he said.I argued, pointing to a very large belly(肚子) of mine, "I am married. I am having a baby. Why should I have to have someone sign for me to drive? "He answered coldly. "It's the law, madam. "Henry encouraged me to calm down, just go ahead and get the license and be done with it. "No, " I said. I refused to have him sign for me. So I left without a Maryland license.I called the North Carolina Motor Vehicle office and renewed my NC license by mail—using my name Susan Brown. And thus it was for the next twelve years. Since Henry was in the army I could drive under my home state license. By the time Henry left the army we were once again living in Maryland, and I had to take the Maryland driver's exam. They exchange newspapers and stamps. The school teachers discuss teaching methods with the teachers in the twin town. Officials visit the twin town for celebrations. Ordinary people travel to the twin town, too, but not very often if it is far away.Sometimes, schools even exchange their classes for two or three weeks! For example, German middle school students study for a while at the school in their twin town in Britain, staying with British families. A few months later, their British friends come to study in Germany. Many British towns are so pleased with the results of the twinning that they set out to find more than one twin town.Tonbridge, a small town in Kent, for example, has twin town in both Germany and France. "—but then you'd give up, and roll me over for a belly scratch and I believed that life could not be any more perfect. My housetraining was a long process, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. We went for long walks, runs in the park and car rides. We stopped for ice cream. I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. Eventually, you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a dog person, but I still welcomed her into our home. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement, I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them too. Your wife was afraid I would bite them. But nevertheless, as they began to grow, I became their friend. Now, you have a new job in another city and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family", but there was a time when I was your only family.I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the dog pound. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said, "I know you will find a good home for her. " They shrugged and gave you a pained look. Thechildren were in tears as they waved me goodbye. And "How could you? " were the only three words that swept over my mind.Is it better to live with hope or without hope? I wished someone would emerge from of those homes to ask me inside to a warm room with a Christmas tree decorated with wrapped presents.I stopped at the local market, feeling even more depressed as people filled their baskets with goodies. Dates and walnuts reminded me of the gifts we received as children in Greece on Christmas Day. I missed my family. 高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 201Passage 1It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2016. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor (劳动), he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his family. And the bike was also used to get groceries (食品杂货), saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, and then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in human as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we can share with others. Strangers are usually of little help.B. One should take care of their bike.C. News reports make people famous.D. An act of kindness can mean a lot.Passage 2He was the baby with no name. Found and taken from the north Atlantic 6 days after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, his tiny body so moved the salvage (救援) workers that they called him "our baby. " In their home port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, people collected money for a headstone in front of the baby's grave (墓), carved with the words: "To the memory of an unknown child" He has rested there ever since. But history has a way of uncovering its secrets. On Nov. 5, this year, three members of a family from Finland arrived at Halifax and laid fresh flowers at the grave. "This is our baby, " says Magda Schleifer, 68, a banker. She grew up hearing stories about a great-aunt named Maria Panula, 42, who had sailed on the Titanic for America to be reunited with her husband. According to the information Mrs. Schleifer had gathered, Panula gave up her seat on a lifeboat to search for her five children—including a 13-month-old boy named Eino from whom she had become separated during the final minutes of the crossing. "We thought they were all lost in the sea, " says Schleifer. Now, using teeth and bone pieces taken from the baby's grave, scientists have compared the DNA from the Unknown Child with those collected from members of five families who lost relatives on the Titanic and never recovered the bodies. The result of the test points only to one possible person: young Eino. Now, the family sees: no need for a new grave. "He belongs to the people of Halifax, " says Schleifer. "They've taken care of him for 90 years. "Adapted from People, November 25, 20021. The baby travelled on the Titanic with his ________ .A. motherB. parentsC. auntD. relatives2. What is probably the boy's last name? ________A. SchleiferiB. EinoC. MagdaD. Panula3. But Mary Cushman MD. Professor of medicine at the University of Vermont, gave evidence that it's less about the exercise you do, but more about how active you are generally.Dr. Cushman explained if the legs don't move for hours at a time, the blood can begin to clot(凝结), leading to a disease called VTE, simply sitting for long periods can be a primary cause.Scientists consider that TV habits are a good way to judge whether or not someone is living such a sedentary(久坐不动的) lifestyle. Sure enough, the data showed that people who watched TV very often had 1. 7 times the risk of suffering a life-threatening blood clot compared to people who said they seldom or never watched TV. To theresearchers' surprise, they found that even frequent TV watchers who exercised regularly were still 1. 8 times more likely to get a blood clot than exercisers who rarely watched television."You can be physically active and also have sedentary behavior. " said Dr. Cushman. "They aren't just opposites. People who are physically active don't necessarily have low sedentary time. "In other words, regular exercise is important for many health reasons, but it's not enough in itself. We also need to remain active throughout the rest of the day.Dr. Cushman suggests limiting our sitting time to avoid diseases, which includes any long periods such as working at a desk or taking a long flight. She also has two pieces of advice. "Number one is to educate yourself about this disease, " she said. And her second piece of advice is clear. "Keep moving to have a healthy lifestyle. That includes not being sedentary, getting proper physical activity and eating a healthy diet, which will help prevent this disease as well as almost every other disease.1. According to Dr. Cushman, what mainly contributes to VTE? ________A. Sitting too long.B. Eating unhealthily.C. Exercising irregularly.D. Watching TV too frequently.2. From the third paragraph, we can infer that________.A. exercises are more likely to suffer blood clots.B. regular exercise is hardly helpful to people's health.C. Being active is opposite to sedentary behavior.B. Physically active people have low sedentary time.C. Physically active people should have sedentary lifestyles.D. People should be active in other time periods besides exercise.4. What does Dr. Cushman mainly talk about in the last paragraph? ________A. How to avoid VTE.B. How to live a long life.C. How to prevent diseases.D. How to change the sedentary lifestyle.Passage 4Like a tired marriage, the relationship between libraries and publishers has long been dull. E- books, however, are causing heartache. Libraries know they need digital wares, but many publishers are too cautious about piracy(盗版) and lost sales to co-operate. Among the big six, only Random House and Harper Collins license e-books with most libraries.Publishers are wise to be nervous. Owners of e-readers(电子阅读器) are exactly the customers they need: book-lovers with money. If these people switch to borrowing e-books instead of buying them, what then? Electronic borrowing is awfully convenient.Unlike printed books, which must be checked out and returned to a physical library miles from where you live, book files can be downloaded at home. The files disappear from the device when they are due.E-lending is not simple, however. There are lots of different and often incompatible(不兼容的) e-book formats, devices and licenses. Most libraries use a company called OverDrive, which secures rights from publishers and provides e-books and audio files in every format. Yet publishers and libraries are worried by Over Drive’s global market dominance(优势), as the company can control fees and conditions. Publishers were annoyed when OverDrive cooperated with Amazon, the world’s biggest online bookseller, last year. Owners of Amazon’s Kindle e-reader who want to borrow e-books from libraries are now redirected to Amazon’s website, where they must use their Amazon account to secure a loan.According to Pew, an opinion researcher, library users are a perfect market for Amazon. Late last year Amazon introduced its Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, which lets its best customers borrow free one of thousands of popular books each month.Library supporters argue that book borrowers are also book buyers and that libraries are vital spaces for readers to discover new works. Many were cheered by a recent Pew survey»which found that more than half of Americans with library cards say they prefer to buy their e-books.So publishers keep adjusting their lending arrangements in search of the right balance.Random House raised its licensing price’s earlier this year, and Harper Collinslimits libraries to lending its titles 26 times.1. It can be inferred from Paragraph 1 that ________.A. several big publishers have sold e-books to librariesB. most publishers are hesitant to cooperate with librariesC. libraries are eager to keep strong relationship with publishersD. libraries and publishers face the same problem of e-books’ piracy2. Why are publishers worried that people will switch to electronic borrowing?A. E-books must be checked out and returned to libraries regularly.B. There is no time limit for the book files downloaded on the device.C. There are lots of different and incompatible e-book formats available.D. Book sales may drop sharply because of convenient electronic borrowing.3. We can learn from the text that ________.A. Amazon is adopting measures to win more customersB. e-books can be lent at libraries as many times as you likeC. Over Drive distributes e-books and audio files to publishersD. over half of Americans are borrowing e-boo from libraries4. What is the best title for the text?A. The Hopeful Future of Publishing BusinessB. The Uncertain Economics of Lending E-booksC. The Dull Relationship between Libraries and PublishersD. The Close Cooperation between OverDrive and AmazonPassage 5Buying books on the Internet is a great way to save time and money. Online bookstores offer new books and used books that can save you lots of money. They are far better compared to traditional bookstores as they offer much wider kinds of books. Another advantage of buying books online is that you can also read the book reviews as well as readers’ reviews to get an idea whether the book is worth buying. Online bookstores offer great discounts to regular customers which is a big attraction for book lovers. For book lovers, the most important thing is to get books on time. Therefore, you need to find a reliable online bookstore that will be able to provide fast deliveries (送货).Here are some tips to use when choosing an online bookstore. Some online bookstores are popular for fiction books; some are for non-fiction books or novels, etc. Understanding their specialization will help you get the right kind of books in time. Check whether you will be buying the books from a third-party seller or directly from the website. Although the website could be reputable (声誉好的), third-party sellers advertised on their site may not have a good reputation. Never jump at stores that offer super cheap prices, as books sold at such low prices could be in very bad condition. Most of the popular online bookstores offer useful tools. One tool is a wish list tool on its website. You can update (更新) the list of books you wish to buy in the future. The bookstore will know what you want and will e-mail you immediately when the book of your choice is available.1. Why was online bookstores much better than traditional ones?A. 高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 235Passage 1This could be the perfect gift for the partner, who embarrasses you on the dance floor. Smart socks, which can teach to dance, may be the answer for anyone with two left feet. The socks have been developed as a running tool to help runners improve their skills. Thanks to the socks, users can accurately record not only how far and fast they run but also how well. It means the user maximizes their performance, and reduces damage to body and prevents hurt. The hi-tech socks are made of special fibers that watch the movements of your feet. They look, feel and can be washed like normal clothes.Sensors (传感器) record each movement and send it by an ankle transmitter (脚踝发射器) to a smart phone. Then a “virtual coach” application shows the information and can tell the user what they are doing wrong, and help to improve skill in any task with feet. The socks should be useful to athletes and weekend joggers. “People think running is so easy and of course everybody can do it but not necessarily safely and well,” Dr. Davide Vigano said. A recent study showed that between 60 and 80 percent of runners got hurt per year. This is pretty much more than any other human activity. Researchers say the technology can also be developed to teach people how to dance, play sports such as golf, or even to help to teach women to walk better in high heels.Mr. Vigano said, “People could all benefit from the idea. We have had interest fromall sorts of sports, like skiing, football, cycling and golf. Anything where you have to use your feet can use it. It could even be put in high heels to help women walk in them safely.”Socks are just the start, and the technology could be used in gloves, hats and boots. The socks, anklet and software package, are expected to be sold for around£120, which will go on sale in March.1. What does the underlined part “anyone with two left feet” refer to?A. Women are most popular at 25 years and 10 months, with men hitting the highest friendship point a little later at 27 years and 3 months. The research, by Forever Friends, shows that about a third of adults meet their closest friends when at school, with about a fifth saying they meet them at work.Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter now also play a major role in building new friendship. The research points out that 25 to 34-year-olds make 22 friends via Facebook, compared to 18 to 24-year-olds who make 12, and 35 to 44-year-olds who make just 4.Forever Friends' relationship coach Sam Owen says, "It is no coincidence that over a third of us meet our best friends at school. It is a key time in our lives when friendship is growing through sharing notes, giving gifts, seeing each other regularly and laughing a lot. As adults we can often forget how powerful these small things areand how the little things can make a difference. "Later in life we find ourselves losing friends. Over half of us lose friendship through moving, while 36% say that over time they grow apart from close pals. "People in Los Angeles, the US, have no idea of distance on the map: they measure distance by time, not miles. "How far away is the post office? " you ask. "Oh, " they answer, "it's about five minutes from here. " You don't understand completely, "Yes, but how many miles away is it, please? " To this question you won't get an answer, because most probably they don't know it themselves.People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because tourists seldom understand the Greek language. Instead, a Greek will often say, "Follow me. " Then he' ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.Sometimes a person doesn't know the answer to your question. What happens in the situation? A New Yorker might say, "Sorry, I have no idea. But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers "I don't know. " People there believe that" I don' t" is impolite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. So a tourist can get lost very easily in Yucatan! However, one thing will help you everywhere in the world. It's body language.1. Which of the following is probably an example of Japanese directions? ________A. "The post office is at Street Kamira. "B. "Turn right at the hospital and go past a school"C. "The post office is about five minutes from here. "D. "Go south two miles. Tun west and then go another mile. "2. Why don' t people in Los Angeles give directions in miles? ________A. They prefer to lead you the wayB. They prefer to use body languageC. They often have no idea of distance measured by milesD. They use landmarks in their directions instead of distance3. How do Greeks give directions? ________A. Using street namesB. Using landmarksC. Leading people the wayD. Giving people a wrong direction4. According to the last paragraph, we can learn that ________ .A. people in Yucatan always give wrong directionsB. people in Mexico know streets' name wellC. body language makes you get lost in YucatanD. people in Mexico prefer to use body languagePassage 4When students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the list. Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as mere entertainment, but certainly not aneducation priority (优先). This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.Music tells us who we are. Because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values, as well as the social environment it came from. Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as a Schubert song. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.Music provides a kind of perception (感知) that cannot be acquired any other way. Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotional meaning of the same phenomenon. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all. The arts are forms of thought as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings "talk" to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our hungers, our discoveries, and our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize.1. According to Paragraph 1, students ________ .A. regard music as a way of entertainmentB. disagree with their parents on educationC. view music as an overlooked subjectD. prefer the arts to science2. In Paragraph 2, the author uses jazz as an example to ________ .A. compare it with rock musicB. show music reflects a societyC. introduce American musical traditionsD. prove music influences people's lifestyles3. According to the passage, the arts and science ________ .A. approach the world from different anglesB. explore different phenomena of the worldC. express people's feelings in different waysD. explain what it means to be human differently4. What is the main idea of the passage? ________A. Music education deserves more attention.B. Music should be of top education priority.C. Music is an effective communication tool.D. Music education makes students more imaginative.Passage 5Several recent studies have found that being randomly assigned (分配) to a roommate of another race can lead to increased tolerance but also to a greater likelihood (可能性) of conflict.Recent reports found that lodging with a student of a different race may decrease prejudice and force students to engage in more ethnically diverse friendships. An Ohio State University study also found that black students living with a white roommate saw higher academic success throughout their college careers. Researchers believe this may be caused by social pressure. In a New York Times article, Sam Boakye—the only black student on his freshman year floor—said that "if you're surrounded by whites, you have something to prove. "Researchers also observed problems resulting from pairing interracial students in residences.According to two recent studies, randomly assigned roommates of different races are more likely to experience conflicts so strained that one roommate will move out.An Indiana University study found that interracial roommates were three times as likely as two white roommates to no longer live together by the end of the semester.Grace Kao, a professor at Penn said she was not surprised by the findings. "This may be the first time that some of these students have interacted, and lived, with someone of a different race, " she said.At Penn, students are not asked to indicate race when applying for housing."One of the great things about freshman housing is that, with some exceptions, theprocess throws you together randomly, " said Undergraduate Assembly chairman Alec Webley. "This is the definition of integration (融合). ""I've experienced roommate conflicts between interracial students that have both broken down prejudices and reinforced prejudices, " said one Penn resident advisor (RA). The RA of two years added that while some conflicts "provided more multicultural acceptance and melding (融合), " there were also " cultural conflicts. "The RA said that these conflicts have also occurred among roommates of the same race.Kao said she cautions against forming any generalizations based on any one of the studies, noting that more background characteristics of the students need to be studied and explained.1. What can we learn from some recent studies? ________A. Conflicts between students of different races are unavoidable.B. Students of different races are prejudiced against each other.C. Interracial lodging does more harm than good.D. Interracial lodging may have diverse outcomes.2. What does Sam Boakye's remark mean? ________A. White students tend to look down upon their black peers.B. Black students can compete with their white peers academically.C. Black students feel somewhat embarrassed among white peers during this year.D. Being surrounded by white peers motivates a black student to work harder to succeed.3. The Indiana University study implies that ________ .A. interracial roommates are more likely to partB. roommates of different races just can't get alongC. few white students like sharing a room with a black peerD. assigning students' lodging randomly is not a good policy4. What does Alec Webley consider to be the "definition of integration"? ________A. Students of different races are required to share a roomB. Interracial lodging is arranged by the school for freshmen.C. Lodging is assigned to students of different races without exception.D. The school assigns roommates without regard to race.参考答案Passage 11. C词义猜测题。

高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 202

高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 202Passage 1People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.One thing I can tell you is that, once you start learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I am in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It is amazing how much this helps. For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I did not want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.1. How long did the author learn English in Wuhan University?A. A week.B. A Month.C. A term.D. A year.2. What is the good way to improve your English according to the author?A. Reading English books.B. Thinking in English.C. Watching English films.D. Learning English grammar.3. Where did the author improve his English quickly?A. In America.B. In China.C. In the university.D. In the middle school.4. What is the best title for the text?A. My University LifeB. American EnglishC. My English Learning ExperienceD. The Importance of Learning EnglishPassage 2John Robert was born in a farm family and his father was a horse trainer. When John was a child, he often went from one farm to another with his father. Sometimes they didn’t have enough money to pay for food, but John still loved this kind of life. He even hoped to own a horse farm when growing up.When he was in school, his teacher once asked students to write about what they wanted to be and do when they grew up. John wrote a seven-page paper talking about his dream of having a horse farm one day. He even drew a picture of a horse farm on the paper. The next day John handed it to his teacher. Two days later, he got his paper back.On the front page was a large red “F” with some words “See me after class.” And the boy did and asked his teacher, “Why did I get an F?” The teacher said, “This dream will not come true for a young boy like you. Owning a horse farm needs a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for a lot of things. There is no way you could ever do it.” Then the teacher added, “If you write this paper again with a simple dream, I will give you a good grade.”After school he thought about it carefully. At last, he decided to hand in the same paper, making no changes at all. He wrote, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”Many years later, John had his own 200 acres (英亩) horse farm. His dream came true.So don’t let someone take away your dream. Follow your dreams, no matter what they are.1. What happened to John when he was a child?A. H e hoped to be a teacher.B. He decided to give up college.C. He often went hungry for poverty.D. His father gave him much money.2. What made the teacher give John an F for his paper?A. His bad temper.B. His difficult dream.C. What does the text mainly want us to do?A. Work hard to realize our dream.B. Keep changing our dreams.C. Follow others’ advice.D. Refuse the teachers’ help.Passage 3There is an English saying: "Laughter is best medicine. " Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people's health.Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercises. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing. It also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍受) the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain.As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial(有益的) effects similar to those who are caused by laughter.1. The main idea of the passage is________ .A. laughter and physical exercises have similar effects.B. smile can produce the same effects as laughterC. pain can be reduced by laughterD. laughter is best medicine2. The underlined word "diminish" is similar to ________ .A. testB. stopC. reduceD. increase3. Doctors hold laughter clinics________ .A. to give better condition to their patientsB. in order to improve patients' healthC. to make patients smile all the timeD. to prove smile and laughter have the same effectPassage 4January means it's time for coats and gloves and cold weather. While many of us are preparing ourselves for the cold weeks ahead, in some cities winter is the "hottest" season of all because it's the time for winter festivities.Every year 2 million people visit the Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan. This internationally well-known event began in 1950, when some local high-school students built six snow statues in Odori Park. Since then, the festival has grown to include lots of snow sculptures as well as a snow-sculpting contest that draws competitors from all over the world. In December, Finland created its 13th annual Snow Village, which will remain open until April, if weather permits. Snow Village lies nearly 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. The village is designed by builders skilled in working with snow and ice. Visitors can take a tour of the village, eat in a restaurant made of ice or go dancing in the disco igloo(拱形圆顶小屋). They can also spend the night in a hotel made of snow. There's even an ice chapel(小礼拜堂) for couples who want to get married in Snow village.Since 1935, the Fur Rendezvous has been held every February in Anchorage, Alaska, America's most northern state. Among the festival's many attractions is the World Championship Sled Dog Race, which draws sled dog teams from many countries. Dogs also take center stage in the Dog Weight Pull, in which dogs compete to see which one can pull the heaviest weight. The festival features sports like skiing, basketball, boxing and softball as well as the Grand Prix Auto Race in downtown Anchorage. True to the festival's name, there's also a fur auction(拍卖), where buyers buy real Alaskan furs. The first Fur Rendezvous lasted only three days. Now it's a 10-day event that attracts thousands of visitors.1. What can we learn about the Sapporo Snow Festival from the second paragraph?________A. How it got started.B. How long it lasts.C. Who is in charge of it.D. How much it costs to attend it.2. What happens at Snow Village? ________A. Skating matches.B. Design contests.C. Indoor weddings.D. Cooking competitions.3. Anyone who visits the Fur Rendezvous can ________ .A. buy what he wantsB. play any sports he likesC. attend a strength competitionD. come across different sled dogsPassage 5There are a couple different things that make ramen noodles an unhealthy choice. There's not much to these provision packets besides salt and carbohydrates. While those certainly get thrown around quite a bit as "bad-for-you" comments, you may not know how they actually harm your body. Firstly, there's the fact that most instant ramen servings contain over 1100 milligrams of sodium—that's approaching half of themaximum you should eat per day. When you take in that much sodium in a single sitting, your body overcompensates by holding more water. This can cause temporary water weight gain, leaving you feeling bloated(肿胀) and lacking in energy. But while you may feel bloated, chances are you won't feel full. Since the ramen contains lots of refined carbohydrates with virtually no protein or fiber, it's essentially the very definition of empty calories. And you've probably heard the song-and-dance about refined carbs; eating too much can lead your blood sugar to increase and then decrease, leaving you hungry and ready to eat again—which leads to weight gain. And, perhaps most upsetting of all, this quick-and-easy meal may stay with you much longer than you realize. Massachusetts General Hospital's Dr. Braden Kuo used a pill-sized camera to record the digestive tracts of volunteers who ate processed ramen noodles as well as fresh ones. With a video, Dr. Kuo was able to show that, after two hours when the fresh noodles were long gone, the ramen noodles were still there in the intestines.Doctors do know that years of eating the instant packets are linked to poor health. Another study, this one by the Harvard School of Public Health, assessed the long-term consequences of ramen consumption in South Korea, where it's a major course. They found that subjects, women in particular, who ate instant noodles at least twice a week had a 68 percent higher risk of diabetes and heart disease—than subjects who ate a more consistently natural diet.In short, eating ramen once in a while won't damage your health—as is true with most processed foods. But it's not something you should make a habit of—for yourstomach and heart's sake.1. What, according to paragraph 1, specifically contribute to the body harm in ramen? ________A. saltB. carbohydratesC. sodiumD. water2. Which of the following is NOT the harm of ramen to people? ________A. resulting in short-term water weight gainB. much longer digesting process in intestinesC. higher risk of diabetes and heart diseaseD. much addition to salt and carbohydrates3. What does the writer intend to do when writing this passage? ________A. To remind people of the harm done to our health.B. To analyze where the harm of ramen lies in detail.C. To warn people never to form a ramen-eating habit.D. To urge people to think twice before eating ramen.参考答案Passage 11. D细节理解题。

It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors, "If one of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages."The sailors had heard about the captain's cheating, so they didn't trust him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. He got into the water, and, though it was very cold, he stayed in it. 高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 203

高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 203

高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 203Passage 1We all know that zebra have strips(条纹). But why? It's hard to get a black-and-white answer. This is a question not just common people like us have asked, but scientists too.Several studies have been done to find out the reason behind the stripes and many theories have been suggested. According to a recent study, the type of stripes changes depending on the temperature where zebras live. The warmer the place is, the more stripes they may have. From this study, scientists believe that stripes may help to keep a zebra cool in warmer places.According to the cooler temperature theory, when air hits a zebra, the movements of air are stronger and faster over the black parts and slower over the white. This is because black color takes in more heat than white. So at the point where the black and white meet, there is cooling airflow. It can quickly cool a zebra's skin! In fact, scientists have noticed that heavily striped zebras have 5. 4℉ lower skin temperature than other animals without stripes in the same area. Some scientists believe that stripes may be an adaptation by zebras to defend themselves from the horseflies that follow zebras. The cooler temperature theory holds merit here too, since disease-carrying flies like horseflies like it hot, Flies also don't like landing on striped surfaces. There also have been many other theories that have been suggested for why zebras have stripes. Some explanations are very common. One of them is that stripes may helpzebras hide in grass especially from lions. Lions are color blind and even if they are not far away they may see stripes as grey and be confused by them. What's more, zebras are a large group of animals living together. When a number of zebra stand or move together, stripes may confuse lions into thinking it is one large animal.1. Stripes are helpful for zebras to________ .A. stay coolB. move togetherC. live in cold placesD. fight against diseases2. How do zebras' stripes protect them from lions?A. Lions may be frightened away by stripsB. Lions may see stripes as many animalsC. Stripes can prevent zebras from being seenD. Stripes may make lions confused3. The underlined words "Holds merit" on paragraph 4 probably mean "________ ".A. works wellB. sounds unreasonableC. causes disagreementD. needs supporting facts4. What is the passage mainly about?A. Why lions can't eat zebraB. How horseflies keep away from zebrasC. Why zebras have stripsD. How stripes keep a zebra coolPassage 2We live in a technological society where most goods are mass-produced by unskilled labor. Because of this, most people think that craft(工艺, 手艺)no longer exists. One of the ways these people wrongly support their view is by pointing to 100-year-old homes which are still solid, and arguing that it is the craftsmanship that is responsible for their durability(牢圈). "Homes in those days were well-built, " they say No doubt these homes were well-built, but what these people have done is to mix up the quality of material used in the house with the quality of the craftsmanship.Homes today could be built to last just as long as those old homes if people were willing or able to pay the price. For example, most people can no longer afford solid oak (橡树) stairways, although they were once fairly common in older homes. Nor can they afford the high labor cost of employing a carpenter to build the stairway. Yet if someone can pay the high cost, there are still plenty of carpenters around able to make those stairways. And not only would these carpenters know how to build them, they would probably do a better job than carpenters of old.One thing the modern carpenter has which enables him to do a better job is much more advanced tools. Such tools as laser beams and power planes help them lay out a house better and make more precision cuts on the wood. Also, it is not uncommon saymore to find carpenters with college degrees and carpenters with a solid knowledge of mathematics, which would enable them to deal with more difficult house designs. The problem of modern quality, then, really boils down to the problem of material, for the modern carpenter is just as able to produce craftsmanship as the carpenter of fifty years ago, but only if given proper material.1. Compared to the carpenters in the past, modern carpenters areA. more successfulB. more learnedC. more imaginativeD. more hardworking2. What does the underlined work "they" (paragraph 2) refer to?A. Carpenters who are fond of oak stairways.B. Carpenters who have college degrees.C. People who think highly of carpenters of oldD. Popole who think that modern material is of low quality3. What does the third paragraph mainly discus?A. People in the past preferred to use oak to build stairwaysB. It is now expensive to employ a carpenter.C. Modern houses lasts long the old cones.D. Good carpenters still exist in modern times.4. The underlined phrase "boils down to" can be replaced byA. reduces by boilingB. makes shorterC. results inD. lies in5. What would be the best title for the text?A. Is Craft Dead?B. Craft, Back to Life?C. History of CraftsmanshipD. Carpenter Today and YesterdayPassage 3The days of staring attentively at the computer screen pretending to be interested in an assignment even though you are bored out of your mind may soon be coming to an end. That's because if Dr. Harry Witchel has his way, computers of the future will be able to detect (察觉) boredom and even react to it real-time.But before you get concerned, the machine is not reading your mind. It is just keeping track of the constant involuntary movements that people exhibit when in front of a computer or even a television. These are not the bigger instrumental actions like moving a mouse or using the remote, but subtle barely noticeable movements like scratching or stretching. Witchel says the level of movement is directly relative to how absorbed the person is in what he/she is reading or watching—the higher the interest level, the lesser the movement! To test the theory Witchel and his team invited 27 people and exposed them to avariety of digital content for three minutes at a time. The activities ranged from playing online games to reading documents like the EU banking regulations that most people would find boring. A video motion tracker monitored their movements as they powered through each assignment. Just as the researchers had suspected, the involuntary actions decreased surprisingly, by as much as 42%, when the subjects were totally absorbed in what they were reading or seeing.Fortunately, the scientists are not planning to use the findings that were published in the online Journal to create machines that report students who are not focusing at school. Instead, they believe that combining the motion detecting technology into future computers will help enhance (加强) the digital learning experience. The scientists say that being able to measure the student's interest level, will enable educators to adjust the materials real-time and re-engage the student. Witchel also believes that the technology can provide filmmakers with honest audience opinions and in the future, also be used in developing more understanding companion robots.1. Dr. Harry Witchel wants future computers to have the competence to ________ .A. sense when users feel tired and less absorbed.B. record how long people surf on the Internet.C. help educators to prepare teaching materials.D. read the people's mind in front of a computer.2. What can we infer from the text? ________A. The machine will be used to detect whether the students are focusing at school.B. Subjects will make fewer unconscious movements if they are concentrated.C. Future computers are intended to cure adolescents of their network addiction.D. Most people think banking documents boring because they are of little value.3. What may be the best title for the text? ________A. Being Exposed to Computers All Day Long Makes You Bored.B. Scientists are Developing a More Advanced Computer Now.C. Computers of the Future May be Able to Detect Boredom.D. The Future Machine is Helpful to Teachers And Students.Passage 4Escaping predators (食肉动物), digestion and other animal activities—including those of humans—require oxygen. But that essential ingredient is no longer so easy for marine life to obtain, several new studies reveal. In the past decade ocean oxygen levels have taken a dive—an alarming trend that is linked to climate change, says Andreas Oschlies, an oceanographer at the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research in Germany, whose team tracks ocean oxygen levels worldwide. “We were surprised by the intensity of the changes we saw, how rapidly oxygen is going down in the ocean and how large the effects on marine ecosystems are,” he says. It is no surprise to scientists that warming oceans are losing oxygen, but the scale of the drop calls for urgent attention. Oxygen levels in some tropical (热带的) regions have dropped by an astonishing 40 percent in the last 50 years, some recent studies reveal. Levels have dropped less significantly elsewhere, with an average loss of 2 percent globally.A warming ocean loses oxygen for two reasons: First, the warmer a liquid becomes, the less gas it can hold. That is why carbonated drinks go flat faster when left in the sun. Second, as polar sea ice melts, it forms a layer of water above colder, more salty sea waters. This process creates a sort of lid that can keep currents from mixing surface water down to deeper depths. And because all oxygen enters the surface, less mixing means less of it at depth.Ocean animals large and small, however, respond to even slight changes in oxygen by seeking refuge in higher oxygen zones or by adjusting behavior, Oschlies and others in his field have found. These adjustments can expose animals to new predators or force them into food-scarce regions. Climate change already poses serious problems for marine life, such as ocean acidification, but deoxygenation is the most pressing issue facing sea animals today, Oschlies says. After all, he says, “they all have to breathe.”Aside from food web problems, animals face various other physiological challenges as their bodies adjust to lower oxygen levels. Chinese shrimp (虾) move their tails less vigorously to preserve energy in lower oxygen environments. Some creatures, such as jellyfishes, are more tolerant of low oxygen than others are. But all animals will feel the impact of deoxygenation because they all have evolved their oxygen capacity for a reason, says Oschlies. “Any drop in oxygen is going to damage survivability and performance,” he says.1. According to the first two paragraphs, what worries scientists the most?A. The worsening deoxygenation in the warming ocean.B. The survival of predators and various marine animals.C. The alarmingly changeable oxygen levels in the ocean.D. The lack of attention to the warming of tropical oceans.2. Which of the following is a reason for the oxygen loss in the ocean?A. Polar ice melting consumes much oxygen in the ocean.B. Global warming reduces the amount of oxygen in the air.C. The surface polar ice water prevents oxygen going down.D. Salty water holds less gas in the increasingly warmer ocean.3. What can be inferred from the passage?A. Ocean deoxygenation changes some animals’ natural territories.B. Ocean acidification is more serious a problem than deoxygenation.C. Not all ocean animals are bothered by the decreasing oxygen levels.D. Some animals reduce their movements in order to absorb more oxygen.4. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A. The Oxygen Levels of Marine LifeB. Ocean Warming Affects Food WebC. The Survivability of Ocean AnimalsD. The Ocean Is Running Out of BreathPassage 5For some people, music is no fun at all. About four percent of the population is what scientists call “amusic.” People who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes(音调). Amusic people often cannot tell the differencebetween two songs. Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are very far apart on the musical scale. As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their inability to enjoy music sets them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to grasp what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret,a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify this unusual condition.Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complex, and it doesn't involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can't see. certain colors. Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed(诊断). For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a name for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say,” No thanks, I'm amusic,'“says Margaret. “I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy.”1. Which of the following is true of amusic?A. Listening to music is far from enjoyable for them.B. They love places where they are likely to hear music.C. They can easily tell two different songs apart.D. Their situation is well understood by musicians.2. According to Paragraph 3, a person with “defective hearing” is probably one who ___________.A. dislikes listening to speechesB. can hear anything nonmusicalC. has a hearing problemD. lacks a complex hearing system3. In the last paragraph, Margaret expressed her wish that __________.A. her problem with music had been diagnosed earlierB. she were seventeen years old rather than seventyC. her problem could be easily explainedD. she were able to meet other amusics4. What is the passage mainly concerned with?A. Amusics' strange behaviours.B. Some people's inability to enjoy music.C. Musical talent and brain structure.D. Identification and treatment of amusics.参考答案Passage 11. A细节理解题。

After climbing up a hill for a panoramic (全景的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama.Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view.Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take, I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so content in her observation. I didn't want to mess with that.Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it, I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it.This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who "ruined" it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knewthat her figure is captured (捕捉) and frozen on some stranger's bedroom wall? A bedroom, after all, is a very private space, in which some woman I don't even know has been immortalized (使……永存). In some ways, she lives in my house.Perhaps we all live in each others' space. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass.1. According to the author, the woman was probably ________ .A. enjoying herselfB. losing her patienceC. waiting for the sunsetD. thinking about her past2. In the author's opinion, what makes the photo so alive? ________A. The rich color of the landscape.B. The perfect positioning of the camera.C. The woman's existence in the photo.D. The soft sunlight that summer day3. The photo on the bedroom wall enables the author to better understand________ .A. the need to be close to natureB. the importance of private spaceC. the joy of the vacation in ItalyD. the shared passion for beauty4. The passage can be seen as the author's reflections upon ________ .A. a particular life experienceB. the pleasure of travelingC. the art of photographyD. a lost friendshipPassage 4“I wish I could!” It’s my response when turning down an invitation, but it’s not exactly true.Sometimes it is. For example, if you need people to feed your baby sheep, but I have to go to work that day, I really wish I could come to your farm. But if you’ve invited me to attend a three-hour meeting, “I wish I could” is a lie. It’s a lie of omission, though, which is better than a regular lie. In a lie of omission, two people just assume(设想)different things about what’s left unsaid. When you hear “I wish I could”, your imagination might complete my response as “I wish I could go to your makeup party.” If that’s what you think I mean, great. I may not want to go to your pottery exhibit (I really don’t), but I don’t want to make you sad either. So this works for both of us.If I’m being honest about how that sentence really ends, most of the time it means “I wish I could please you by doing the thing you’re asking me to do; however, I’m not going to do it.” I’d love to say I’m a reformed(改进的)people pleaser, but I’m onlyreformed enough to say no to your event, not reformed enough to be clear and say, “I’d rather eat glass than attend a meeting on a Friday.” I admit it: I like being liked. Who doesn’t?It made me happy that, when a friend asked last week, “Come and try my hot yoga class tomorrow?” and I answered, “I wish I could!” she walked away smiling. Plus, who knows? Maybe I’ll be in the mood for hot yoga next time. Probably not, but I’ve left the window open for her to ask me again.1. What does the text mainly focus on?A. The art of turning down.B. The power of saying no directly.C. The relationship between friends.D. The most effective ways to accept invitations.2. What can we infer about the author from Paragraph 3?A. She is a habitual liar.B. She is a sports enthusiast.C. She tends to make people angry.D. She knows how to tell white lies.3. What does the author mean by saying “I’m a reformed people pleaser” in Paragraph 5?A. She pleases everyone.B. She hates those who tell lies.C. She says no in an indirect way.D. She pays little attention to others’ feelings.4. Which of the following words best describe the author?A. Wise and polite.B. Brave and generous.C. Honest and respected.D. Sensitive and self-centered.Passage 5I graduated in 2004 and moved to Israel, making a career as an English teacher. I am always looking for interesting projects to get my students more inspired to learn the language. Through Facebook, I saw that Kirstin, a friend of mine, was teaching at a school in an East African country. I contacted Kirstin and asked her if she would like to do a letter exchange between my students in Jerusalem and her students in Tanzania. It took a while to wait for Kirstin’s answer because Internet access is not easy to come in the countryside of Tanzania, but when she finally was able to connect, she responded with a huge yes.Two months later, a package arrived. The students gathered around my table in class, and we went over the letters together. “My name is Nelson,” one letter read. “I am 13 years old. I live in Njombe, Tanzania. I like to play ball, to ride a bike, and to read books.” Below the handwritten letter was a colorful drawing of a boy wearing traditional Tanzanian clothing. My students were excited. “This is so cool! What a great project,” shouted one of my students, Hadas. This was followed by a group of students asking if we could travel to Tanzania to meet their new friends. One student, Nir, suggested maybe they couldsimply become friends on Facebook instead. “The kids don’t have Facebook accounts. And there’s very limited Internet access in their area of Tanzania, I explained to them.It was hard for my students to imagine that there were places in the world where teens did not have online social networking systems. The pen pal project gave my students the chance to not only practice their English, but to also learn about other areas in our world.1. Why did the author get in touch with Kirstin?A. To get to know East Africa.B. To learn English online from her.C. To let two classes write to each other.D. To ask her for advice about teaching English.2. How did Kirstin react to the author’s request?A. She turned it down.B. She accepted it willingly.C. She replied immediately.D. She never showed up online.3. What was the attitude of the author’s students toward the project?A. Disappointed.B. Uncaring.C. Favorable.D. Doubtful.4. What is the best title for this text?A. Two Heads Are Better Than OneB. A friend In Need Is A Friend IndeedC. How Writing Letters Improves People’s RelationshipsD. How A Class Pen Pal Project Connected Two Continents参考答案Passage 11. 高一英语下学期阅读理解(9篇)(上半学期)(三)一Dear Carol,I wear braces (牙箍) and I know I look just terrible in them. Is there anything I can do to improve my appearance until they come off?Connie N. Philadelphia, PADear Connie,Start by thinking about how good you are going to look when your braces come off. If you are negative about your appearance, people will pick that up right away about you. In the meantime there are several things that you can do to lift your spirits:Change your hairstyle. Be sure to get a good cut so that the shape of your hair will be flattering to your face and also good for your type of hair (fine, thick, straight, curly, etc.) Choose a hairstyle that draws attention away from your face. Hair pulled back into a pony-tail or into a ball on top or slightly off-center can be attractive and practical for this purpose.Keep skin clean. If you choose to wear makeup(化妆品), it should look natural. Blusher(腮红) and lip gloss(润唇膏) in light tones of peach or pink are best.Be well-groomed(打扮). Neatness really counts. People see a total look about you before they ever become aware of your braces. And first impressions are lasting ones!1. Why did Connie write to Carol?A. Because she really cared about her clothes.B. Because she cared much about her appearance.C. Because her teeth were not good.D. Because she didn‟t know how to make up.2. The underlined word “count” means “______” in the last paragraph.A. say numbers in orderB. be of importanceC. not includeD. be accepted二It is reported that conservation(环保) groups in North America have been arguing about the benefits and dangers of wolves. Some groups believe wolves should be killed. Other people believe wolves must be protected so that they will not disappear from the wilderness(荒野).For Killing WolvesIn Alaska, the wolf almost disappeared a few years ago, because hunters were killing hundreds of them for sport. However, laws were passed to protect the wolves from sportsmen and people who catch the animals for their fur. So the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so many wolves that they are destroying their own food supply.A wolf naturally eats animals in the deer family. People in the wilderness also hunt deer for food. Many of the animals have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by changesin the wilderness plant life. When the deer can‟t find enough food, they die.If the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, their prey(猎物)will disappear some day. And the wolves will, too. So we must change the cycle of life in the wilderness to balance the ecology(生态).If we killed more wolves, we would save them and their prey from dying out. We‟d also save some farm animals. In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens for food. Farmers want the government to send biologists to study the problem. They believe it necessary to kill wolves in some areas and to protect them in places where there is a small wolf population.Against Killing WolvesIf you had lived long ago, you would have heard many different stories about the dangerous wolf. According to most stories, hungry wolves often kill people for food. Even today, the stories of the “big bad wo l f'” will not disappear. But the fact is wolves are afraid of people, and they seldom travel in areas where there is a human smell. When wolves eat other animals, they usually kill the very young, or the sick and injured. The strongest survive. No kind of animal would have survived through the centuries if the weak members had lived. And that has always been a law of nature.Although some people say it is good sense to kill wolves, we say it is nonsense! Researchers have found wolves and their prey living in balance. The wolves keep the deer population from becoming too large, and that keeps a balance in the wilderness plant life. The real problem is that the areas where wolves can live are being used by people. Even if wilderness land is not used directly for human needs, the wolves can‟t always find enough food. So they travel to the nearest source, which is often a farm. Then there is danger. The “big bad wolf” has arrived! And everyone knows what happens next.1. According to the passage, some people in North America favor killing wolves for all the following reasons EXCET that .A. there are too many wolvesB. they kill large numbers deerC. they attack cows and chickens for foodD. they destroy the wilderness plant life2. Some people are against killing wolves because .A. wolves help to keep the ecological balance in the wildnessB. there is too small a wolf population in the wildernessC. there are too many deer in the wildernessD. wolves are afraid of people and never attack people3. According to those against killing wolves, when wolves eat other animals, .A. they never eat strong and healthy onesB. they always go against the law of natureC. they might help this kind of animals survive in natureD. they disturb the ecological balance in the wilderness4. The last sentence" And everyone knows what happens next" implies that in such cases .A. farm animals will be in danger and have to be moved awayB. wolves will kill people and people will in turn kill themC. wolves will find enough food sources on farmsD. people will leave the areas where wolves can live三What to do next?It was a momentous question. I had gone out into the world to shift for myself. I had gaineda livelihood in various vocations, but no one was dazzled with my successes. I had once been a grocery clerk for one day, but had consumed so much sugar that I was fired. I had studies an entire week, and then given it up because it was tiresome. I had been a bookseller‟s check for a while, but the customers bothered me so much that I could not read with any comfort. I had been a private secretary, a silver miner and a silver mill operator, and amounted to less than nothing in each, and now ---What to do next?I have in to Higbie and tried mining once more. We climbed far up on the mountainside and went to work. Higbie descended into the shaft and worked with his pick till he had loosened up some rock and dirt, and then I went down with a shovel to throw it out. I made the toss, and landed the mess must on the edge of the shaft. It all came back on my head and down the back of my neck. I never said a word, but climbed out and walked home.I sat down in the cabin, and gave myself up to misery. In the past, I had amused myself with writing letters to the chief paper of the Territory, the Virginia Daily Territorial Enterprise, an d had always been surprised when they appeared in print. I had found a letter in the mail box as I came home from the hillside, and opened it. Eureka! It was an offer to me of twenty-five dollars a week to come up to Virginia and be city editor of the Enterprise. Twenty-five dollars a week was a fortune.I went up to Virginia and entered upon my new vocation. I asked the chief editor, Mr. Goodman, for some instructions, and he told me to go all over town and ask all sorts of people all sorts of questions, make notes of the information gained, and write them out for publication. It was the whole thing in a nutshell.I can never forget my first day‟s experience as a reporter. I wandered about town questioning everybody, boring everybody, and finding out that nobody knew anything. At the end of five hours, my notebook was still bare. I spoke to Mr. Goodman. He said, …Dan used to write good stories about the hay wagons when there was no news. Are there no hay wagons around? If there are, you might speak of the renewed activity in the hay business. It isn‟t sensational or exciting, but it fills up the newspaper and looks businesslike.‟I went out into the city again and found one wretched old hay truck dragging in from the country. Next I discovered a wagon train from the East and found that it had lately come through the hostile Indian country. The group was in rather rough shape. My two columns were filled. When I read them over in the morning, I felt that I had found my legitimate occupation at last. News was what a paper needed, and I felt that I had the ability to furnish it. Mr. Goodman said that I was a good a reporter as Dan. I desired no higher commendation.1. What d oes the author mean when he says, …I had gone out into the world to shift for myself‟?A. He wanted to travel to many places.B. He wanted to do things by himself.C. He liked moving things.D. He wanted to be successful.2. Why do you think the author gives himself to misery?A. He was fired from his job as a miner.B. He cannot find a job.C. He cannot find work that he enjoys doing.D. He does not like living in a cabin.3. Why does Mr. Goodman suggest writing about hay wagons?A. Because it will take up space in the newspaper.B. Because hay wagons are interesting.C. Because it is important business news.D. Because people need hay.4. What is the meaning of the underlined word …legitimate‟ in the passage?A. legalB. friendlyC. acceptableD. amusing四Vincent Van Gogh is probably the world‟s most famous painter. Many people wonder if he deserves such a reputation. Certainly, he was not a success in his lifetime. Although he produced more than 800 paintings, he sold only one, for about only US $80. No gallery showed his work during his life. Few people may have even heard of him. Hi s fame developed slowly after his death in 1890, but it has never stopped growing. One hundred years later, in 1990, a Japanese businessman paid US $82 million for one of his works --- a world record. He was born in the Netherlands in 1853. As a young man, he tried many different jobs. He worked in an art dealer‟s company, but he must have disliked it, because he left. He went to England and became a language teacher. Then, looking for a deeper purpo se in life, he worked as a missionary among the poor in Belgium, but he quarreled with his superiors and abandoned that career as well. Finally, he decided to become a painter. For the rest of his life, he depended on the financia l support of his brother Theo, the only person who believed in his ability. For ten years, from 1880 to 1890, Van Gogh produced his best paintings, until, sadly, he took his own life.It would be easy to say that he was mad. He had difficulty getting along with people, often arguing with them. After one quarrel, in late 1888, he was so upset that he cut off part of his own ear and gave it to a young girl. Later, from 1889 to 1890, he spent a year in a mental hospital. Yet, for most of his life, he was completely sane (精神正常的). We know this because he wrote hundreds of letters to Theo expressing his ideas and his work, and these letters show the clarity of his thinking.Does he deserve the fame he now possesses? Certainly. I admire his work tremendously. His paintings are realistic, not abstract. At the same time, they are not like photographs. The bright colors and thick strokes of his paintings make the strong feelings inside him visible. Even when his subjects are flowers, trees or the sky, his paintings are full of powerful, honest emotions, emotions which finally killed him.1. The writer suggests that V an Gogh‟s reputation ______ .A. was high soon after he diedB. grew steadily after his deathC. quickly developed through EuropeD. stopped growing until the 1980s2. Paragraph 3 implies that in 1890 many people _____ .A.did not agree with Theo‟s view about his brotherB. thought Van Gogh had already produced his best paintingsC. thought Van Gogh had great ability as a painterD. were sad when Van Gogh died suddenly3. The writer says that Van Gogh was sane for most of his life. We know this from ____ .A. his letters to his brotherB. a Japanese businessmanC. his religious employersD. his father五Alvin E. Roth, who graduated from Columbia Engineering in 1971 and is currently Professor of Economics and Business Administration at Harvard, was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics for his pioneering work in the practical design of market institutions. He shares the award with Lloyd S. Shapley, professor at UCLA, who also used game theory to better understand different matching methods. The Royal Swedish Academy, which announced the winners this morning, awarded the two researchers the prize for “an outstanding example of economic engineering,” and while they worked independently of one another, the “combination of Shapley‟s basic theory and Roth‟s empirical investigations, experiments, and practical design has generated a flourishing field of rese arch and improved the performance of many markets.” They will share the $1.2 million prize.“We are absolutely thrilled,” said Dean and Professor of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR). “Columbia Engineering now has two graduates who h ave won the Nobel Prize in Economics, Robert C. Merton in 1997 and Alvin E. Roth in 2012, both from programs now housed in the IEOR Department! This is another highly visible confirmation of the great strengths at our school—superb students and professors.”Roth and his colleagues demonstrated that stability is the key to understanding the success of particular market institutions. Roth began studying the labor market for American doctors in the early 1980s, and was asked to direct its redesign in 1995. The Roth-Peranson (1999) algorithm is now used to organize a number of medical and health care markets. Roth‟s research has led to the redesign of such complex systems as assigning students to public schools in large urban cities and the matching of kidney and other human organs to patients in need of a transplant. After receiving his B.S. from the Engineering School in 1971, Roth moved to California to complete his master‟s and doctorate at Stanford University, both in operations research, in 1973 and 1974, respectively. He began his academic career as a professor after graduation and joined Harvard in 1998 and now is also a visiting professor of Economics at Stanford where he will join the faculty full-time in 2013. Roth has received numerous professional honors and awards in recognition of his research.Last week, Robert J. Lefkowitz, another Columbia alumnus who graduated in 1962 from the College and in 1966 from the Columbia‟s College of Physicians and Surgeons, was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. To date, 82 Columbians—including alumni, faculty, adjunct faculty, researchers, and administrators—have won a Nobel Prize at some point in their careers.1 Which one of the following choices shares the most similar meaning with the underlined word “empirical” in Para. 2?A. theoreticalB. logicalC. practicalD. cooperative2. Roth‟s research may NOT applicable to which of the following occupations?A. TeachersB. LawyersC. NursesD. Surgeons3. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Roth will earn $0.6 million prize from Sweden.B. Roth joined Harvard upon graduating from Stanford with his doctor degree.C. Roth is leaving Harvard for Stanford next year.D. Roth is the second Nobel Prize winner of Columbia Engineering.六Who decides how English is spoken around the world? Do teachers in the colleges and schools? What about those who write dictionaries or books? Do they decide what is good and what is bad English? Or do governments decide when a language will change? Probably you have thought about this question once or twice before. The answer is that none of these people decide how English will be spoken. Believe it or not, many of the biggest changes in how English is spoken have come from common people in the streets. And one of the most important places where English has changed is on the playground! These playground can be any place where youngpeople meet, such as a sports field or a beach. For example, black kids invented many new words in American English as they played basketball or music. Often words used by black kids in the big cities become popular with other kids many years later. Another popular sport, baseball, has also given many words and expressions to American English. On the beaches of southern California, teenagers invented words to describe how they felt when they surfed. These words found their way into the high schools and then to other places. Similar changes in English happened among young people in Ireland and Australia. Children from one group would find ways to play with children of another group more easily. Often they made new words just to develop an identity different from their parents.1. Who decides how English is spoken?A. GovernmentsB. TeachersC. Ordinary peopleD. Black kids2. Indeed, some labels show the dress is famous and it is very expensive, so buyers secretly wish they might be carried for ever. On the other hand, buyers who deal with the cheapest products(产品) would be pleased to do away with labels entirely. However, there is another label more important than the one showing from which store the dress was bought. When a person buys a fur coat, or a jacket, from a store, a label telling what the product is made of should be carried to it.This label is required by law. Besides telling what the product on show is made of, the label should be in clear English and be where one can find it easily. The information on the label must be the truth. The reason for this label is that most buyers today aren‟t expert enough to know exactly what kind of fur or material they are buying. 高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 239Passage 1An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money. Only very expensive operation could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money. When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother, "Only a miracle (something couldn't happen) can save him now, " the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted it carefully. She hurried to a drugstore (药店) with the money in her hand."And what do you want? I was the queen of the playground. Then came my tweens and teens, and mean girls and cool kids. They rose in the ranks not by being friendly but by smoking cigarettes, breaking rules and playing jokes on others, among whom I soon found myself.Popularity is a well-explored subject in social psychology. Mitch Prinstein, a professor of clinical psychology sorts the popular into two categories: the likable and the status seekers. The likables' plays-well-with-others qualities strengthen schoolyard friendships, jump-start interpersonal skills and, when tapped early, are employed ever after in life and work. Then there's the kind of popularity that appears in adolescence: status born of power and even dishonorable behavior.Enviable as the cool kids may have seemed, Dr. Prinstein's studies show unpleasant consequences. Those who were highest in status in high school, as well as those least liked in elementary school, are "most likely to engage (从事) in dangerous and risky behavior. "In one study, Dr. Prinstein examined the two types of popularity in 235 adolescents, scoring the least liked, the most liked and the highest in status based on student surveys (调查研究). "We found that the least well-liked teens had become more aggressive over time toward their classmates. But so had those who were high in status. It clearly showed that while likability can lead to healthy adjustment, high status has just the opposite effect on us. "Dr. Prinstein has also found that the qualities that made the neighbors want you on a play date—sharing, kindness, openness—carry over to later years and make you better able to relate and connect with others. In analyzing his and other research, Dr. Prinstein came to another conclusion: Not only is likability related to positive life outcomes, but it is also responsible for those outcomes, too. "Being liked creates opportunities for learning and for new kinds of life experiences that help somebody gain an advantage, " he said.1. What is the second paragraph mainly about? ________A. The classification of the popular.B. The characteristics of adolescents.C. The importance of interpersonal skills.D. The causes of dishonorable behavior.2. What did Dr. Prinstein's study find about the most liked kids? ________A. They appeared to be aggressive.B. They tended to be more adaptableC. They enjoyed the highest status.D. They performed well academically.3. What is the best title for the text? ________A. Be Nice—You Won't Finish LastB. The Higher the Status, the BetterC. Be the Best—You Can Make ItD. More Self-Control, Less AggressivenessPassage 3An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起) the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book" project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.In Chicago, the mayor (市长) appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighbourhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character. The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致) can be achieved. Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.Ultimately as Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how manypeople read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.1. What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy? ________A. To invite authors to guide readers.B. To encourage people to read and share.C. To involve people in community service.D. To promote the friendship between cities.2. Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project? ________A. They had little interest in reading.B. They were too busy to read a book.C. They came from many different backgrounds.D. They lacked support from the local government.3. According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out? ________A. In large communities with little sense of unity.B. In large cities where libraries are far from home.C. In medium-sized cities with a diverse population.D. In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.4. According to Nancy, the degree of success of the project is judged by ________ .A. the careful selection of a proper bookB. the growing popularity of the writersC. the number of people who benefit from readingD. the number of books that each person readsPassage 4Researchers say they have developed technology that could predict heart attacks years before they happen. They report using mathematical systems to examine CT images of a patient's heart. A CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to make detailed pictures of bones, organs and other tissue inside the body. The new method was developed by researchers at the University of Oxford in England. A report on their study was published in the medical journal The Lancet. Also taking part in the study were teams from Germany and the U. S.Most heart attacks result from a build-up of fatty tissue inside arteries(动脉) that carry blood from the heart to other areas of the body, thus blocking this flow of blood and causing a heart attack.Currently, doctors use CT scans to learn when a sticky substance called plaque has already built up inside an artery. The new technology is designed to predict which arteries are at risk for future buildup. The researchers reported using computers to examine CT scans to measure how much fat is present around heart arteries. That fat changes when an artery becomes affected, serving as an early warning system for heart attacks.Charalambos, a professor at the University of Oxford, said he believes the research shows this method could be very effective in getting patients to take early steps to prevent future problems, adding that researchers had yet to estimate exactly how manyheart attacks could be prevented. But he said he believes the technique could help identify between 20 to 30 percent of people at risk of having one.He added that the new technology will make such predictions easier because it works together with existing CT technology. The research was based on two large, independent studies of 4, 000 patients in Germany, and the U. S. A company with ties to the University of Oxford is developing a service to examine CT scans of patients around the world, Reuters reported.1. What's the aim of the new technology? ________A. To predict ways to block fatty issues in heart arteries.B. To provide detailed pictures of how arteries work.C. To build computer models of the image of a heart.D. To decide which arteries are likely to have fat built up.2. What's an early warning for heart attacks? ________A. A change of fat happening around heart arteries.B. The finding of a sticky material in the blood.C. The presence of fat around the bones and organs.D. The aging and failure of arteries near the heart.3. What's the main idea of the text? ________A. The harm of fat build-up to heart arteries.B. The use of CT scans to prevent heart attacks.C. Research into the early warning of heart attacks.D. The warming the body gives about heart attacks.Passage 5Two years ago my grandmother was going to turn 75. My family discussed what the best way to celebrate was. Should we throw her a party? Should we take her on a trip? We remembered that she had touched so many people's lives, and there were so many people for her to consider. Then someone got the idea that we should include everyone in the celebration by turning it into a tribute(献礼) to my grandmother. We secretly sent out letters to the people in Grandmother's address book and asked them to send a letter with a memory that they had shared with her. People sent us letters with poems, stories and pictures. The deep feeling that was shared through the response surprised us. We compiled(编辑) these letters into a memory book and amazed her with it on the morning of her birthday. The unusual thing about my grandmother's friends was not the number that she had, but the connection they shared. In many ways this book of friendship was the greatest achievement of my grandmother's life.I believe that developing true friendships is one of the most important things that anyone can do in one's lifetime. It is not a matter of the number of friends one has, but the quality of the bonds. If one has had at least one true friendship before dying, then one can say one has lived a successful life. I have made many friends and I believe I have begun to develop the same types of friendships my grandmother kept up over her lifetime. I only hope that I will be as successful as she has been.1. How did the author's family celebrate Grandmother's birthday? ________A. They took her on a trip across the country.B. They gave her a memory book of friendship.C. They invited all her friends to her birthday party.D. They asked all her friends to send her cards.2. The underlined word "bonds" in the last paragraph probably means ________ .A. relationshipsB. worksC. SuccessesD. celebrations4. According to the passage, the author probably agrees that ________ .A. the more friends you have, the betterB. friends are more important than familyC. understanding leads to greater successD. true friendship is very important to us参考答案Passage 11. Dr. Christopher Wilk is a member of a small group of elevator experts who consider this a misunderstanding. Without the elevator, they point out, there could be no downtown skyscraper or tall buildings, and city life as we know it would be impossible. In that sense they argue, the elevator's role in American history has been no less significant than that of cars. In fact, according to Wilk, the car and the elevator have been lockedin a "secret war" for over a century, with cars making it possible for people to spread horizontally (水平地), and elevators pushing them toward life in towering vertical (垂直的) columns. If we tend to ignore the significance of elevators, it might be because riding in them tends to be such a brief, boring, and even awkward experience—one that can involve unexpectedly meeting people with whom we have nothing in common, and an unpleasant awareness of the fact that. we're, hanging from a cable in a long passage. In a new book, Lifted, German journalist and cultural studies professor Andreas Bernard directed all his attention to this experience, studying the origins of elevator and its relationship to humankind and finding that riding in an elevator has never been a totally comfortable experience. "After 150 years, we are still not used to it, " Bernard said. "We still have not exactly learned to cope with the mixture of closeness and displeasure. " That mixture, according to Bernard, sets the elevator ride apart from just about every their other situation we find ourselves in as we go about our lives.Today, as the world's urban population explodes, and cities become more crowded and taller America's total number of elevators—900, 000 at last count, according to Elevator World magazine's "2012 Vertical Transportation Industry" are a force that's becoming more important than ever. Uncomfortable conditions.4. The author makes readers to consider ________ .A. the exact number of elevator loversB. the serious future situation of elevatorsC. the role of elevators in city developmentD. the relationship between cars and elevatorsPassage 4Being considered a leader in our society is indeed of high praise Leadership means power, commands respect and, most important, encourages achievement. Unlikevitamin C, leadership skills can't be easily swallowed down. They must be carefully cultivated.Different from popular belief, most good leaders are made, no born. They learn their skills in their everyday lives. But which do they develop? How do they (and how can you) get others to follow?Always give credit (赞美). Many leaders note that the most effective way to get a good performance from others is to treat them like heroes. Giving public credit to someone who has earned it is the best leadership skill in the world. It is also an act of generosity (慷慨的) that's never forgotten.Giving credit is more effective than even the most constructive criticism (批评), which often hurts rather than helps. Kenneth Blanchard, the author of The One-Minute Manager, agrees. "Catch people doing something right!" he says. Then tell everyone about it.Take informed risks. "The best leaders know that taking a risk is not a thoughtless exercise, " says management adviser Marilyn Machlowitz. "Sky divers don't go up in an airplane without checking the parachutes beforehand. " Because the idea of risk also carries with it the possibility of failure, many of us usually wait for others to take charge. But if you want to be a leader, you must learn to fail and not die a thousand deaths. Pick yourself up and start all over again.Encourage enthusiasm. "When people understand the importance of work, they lend their mental strengths, " says Lee Ducat. But when they get excited about the work, all their energy gets poured into the job. That's a great force! Is this the best way tocreate excitement? Be enthusiastic yourself—You will be followed by everyone.1. The underlined word "cultivated" (Paragraph 1) roughly means. ________A. encouragedB. comparedC. examinedD. developed2. 高一英语阅读理解强化训练Day 3Passage 1Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name--phubbers(低头族).Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities(身份) bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone.A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world.Although the ending sounds overstated, the damage phubbing can bring is real. Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Constantly bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck, ” Guangming Daily quoted doctors as saying. “the neck is like a rope that breaks after long--term stretching. ” Also, staring at cell phones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report. But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported. It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.1. For what purpose does the author give the example of a cartoon in Paragragh2?A. To inform people of the bad effects of phubbing.B. To advertise the cartoon made by students.C. To indicate the world will finally be destroyed by phubbers.D. To warn doctors against using cell phones while treating patients.2. Which of the following is NOT a risk a phubber may have?A. His social skills could be affected.B. His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed.C. He will cause the destruction of the world.D. He might get separated from his friends and family.3. Which of the following may be the author’s attitude towards phubbing?A. Supportive.B. Opposed.C. Optimistic.D. Objective.4. What may the passage talk about next?A. Advice on how to use a cell phone.B. People addicted to phubbing.C. Measures to reduce the risks of phubbing.D. Consequences of phubbing.Passage 2Spring is coming, and it is time for those about to graduate to look for jobs.Competition is tough, so job seekers must carefully consider their personal choices. Whatever we are wearing, our family and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not.A high school newspaper editor said it is unfair for companies to discourage visible tattoos (纹身), nose rings, or certain dress styles. It is true you can’t judge a book by its cover, yet people do “cover” themselves in order to convey certain messages. What we wear, including tattoos and nose rings, is an expression of who we are. Just as people convey messages about themselves with their appearances, so do companies. Dress standards exist in the business world for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often about what customers accept.Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom, but for businesses it is more about whether to make or lose money. Most employers do care about the personal appearances of their employees, because those people represent the companies to their customers. As a hiring manager I am paid to choose the people who would make the best impression on our customers. There are plenty of well--qualified candidates, so it is not wrong to reject someone who might disappoint my customers. Even though I am open--minded, I can’t expect all our customers are. There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choices does not match that of your preferred employer. No company should have to change to satisfy a candidate simply because he or she is unwilling to respect its standards, as long as its standards are legal.1. Which of the following is the newspaper editor’s opinion according to Paragraph 2?A. People’s appearances carry message about themselves.B. Customers’ choices influence dress standards in companies.C. Candidates with tattoos or nose rings should be fairly--treated.D. Strange dress styles should not be encouraged in the workplace.2. What can be inferred from the text?A. Candidates have to wear what companies prefer for an interview.B. What to wear is not a matter of personal choice for companies.C. Companies sometimes have to change to respect their candidates.D. Hiring managers make the best impression on their candidates.3. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?A. Employees MatterB. Personal Choices MatterC. Appearances MatterD. Hiring Managers Matter4. The author’s attitude towards strange dress styles in the workplace may best be described as .A. enthusiasticB. negativeC. positiveD. sympatheticPassage 3Friendship Day in India falls on the first Sunday of August every year. It is celebrated with many activities.Young people in India spend the day with their closest friends and have fun together. Most youngsters in India plan a movie or have a meal with their friends. Many friends may go on a drive to tourist places or make a plan for camping. Some friends go to the supermarket to do some shopping. On Friendship Day, most stores offer discounted prices for customers and it is the perfect day to buy something for friends. Some friends go to parties that are organized by many restaurants in order to attract youngsters. Such parties are very enjoyable. You can get food at a discounted price. Some friends just decide to meet up(碰头, 相聚)at someone’s home and talk about their happy time. The time good friends spend sitting together and talking over a cup of coffee is precious and unforgettable.Long-distance friends call up each other on this day and wish each other with warm feelings. Some of them even plan to meet up on this particular day. Yet some others plan a surprising visit just to see their friend gasp(喘息)in shock! In 2009, Friendship Day in India falls on August 2nd. Besides the fire drills(演习) we had each year at school, we also had earthquakes drills. Luckily, there are a few things we can do to prepare for an earthquake. At home, I think we can fasten heavy objects to our walls. We can buy hooks at our local hardware store. When we fasten them to the walks, we should make sure we follow the instructions. When we put objects on shelves, we should make sure they are not heavy or that they cannot hurt somebody when they fall off. This is especially important in bedrooms, as when we are awakened due to an earthquake, our reaction time may be slow. We willwant to make sure that we don't have objects that will fall directly on to the bed.For homes with children, I think parents should teach them what to do during an earthquake. Parents should show them how to get under a table during a quake. Another safe place is an inside doorframe. Parents should teach their children not to go near glass or other unsafe area during the quake. I think they should also teach children what to do if they are ever trapped after an earthquake. If we are in a structure, which has suffered considerable damage, I think we should try to move outside after the quake. As we go outside, we should make sure that we are aware of fallen power lines and other dangers. Broken gas mains are another serious danger after a quake. This is an emergency where it is important to have a family's emergency action plan in place. Most likely a family will not be together during an earthquake. If each one can remember what they are supposed to do in this situation, then they will have an easier time finding and picking up each other.1.
