If it is not considered, the study is restricted to the area of traditional semantics; if it is considered, the study is being carried out in the area of pragmatics9. How does a sentence differ from an utterance?A sentence is a grammatical concept. It usually consists of a subject and predicate. An utterance is the unit of communication. It is the smallest linguistic unit that has a communicative value. If we regard a sentence as what people actually utter in the course of communication, it becomes an utterance. Whether “Mary is beautiful.” is a sentence or an utterance de­ pends on how we look at it. If we regard it as a grammatical unit or a self-contained unit in isolation, then it is a sentence. If we look at it as something uttered in a certain situation with a certain purpose, then it is an utterance. Most utter­ ances take the form of complete sentences, but some utterances are not, and some cannot even be restored to complete sentences.10. speech organsSpeech organs are the human body involved in the production of speech, including the lungs, the trachea, the throat, the nose, and the mouth.When the vocal folds are apart , the air can pass through easily and the sound produced is said to be VOICELESS. Minimal pairs are two words which are identical in every way except for one sound segments that occurs in the same position in the string. So in english ,Pill and Bill are a minimal pair, and so are pill and till, till and kill, kill and dill. Accordingly, we can conclude that /p/ ,/b/,/t/,/d/ are phonemes in english. Then all these sound combinations together constitute a minimal set; they are identical in form except for the initial consonant. By identifying the minimal pair or the minimal set of a language, a linguists can identify its phonemes.15. How do phonetics and phonology differ in their focus of study?Phonetics and phonology both study the same aspect of language---- speech sounds, there is a fair degree of overlap in what concerns the two subjects. Without the knowledge of speech sounds provided by phonetic studies, any study of the sound system of a particular language would have been almost impossible.However, the two subjects approach speech sounds from different points of view.A) Phonetics provides methods for the description, transcription of sounds for all languages; phonology studies the sound system of a particular language. Therefore, phonetics is general, descriptive, and classificatory; it is interested in all the speech sounds used in all human languages: how they are produced, how they differ from each other, etc. phonological study is particular and functional. This study is concerned with the effectiveness of computer-based multimedia for developing listening comprehension in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The listening skill plays a significant role in communication and in language learning (Rubin, 1994; Dunkel, 1991; Rost, 1990; Anderson and Lynch, 1988) and is perhaps "the most fundamental language skill" (Oxford, 1993: p. 205). The experiments were conducted by a psychologist, John B. Calhoun and his associates. In each of these experiments, an equal number of male and female adult rats were placed in an enclosure and given an adequate supply of food, water, and other necessities. The rat populations were allowed to increase. Calhoun knew from experience approximately how many rats could live in the enclosures without experiencing stress due to overcrowding. He allowed the population to increase to approximately twice this number. Then he stabilized the population by removing offspring that were not dependent on their mothers. He and his associates then carefully observed and recorded behavior in these overpopulated communities. At the end of their experiments, Calhoun and his associates were able to conclude that overcrowding causes a breakdown in the normal social relationships among rats, a kind of social disease. The rats in the experiments did not follow the same patterns of behavior as rats would in a community without overcrowding.The females in the rat population were the most seriously affected by the high population density: They showed deviant异常的maternal behavior; they did not behave as mother rats normally do. Some withdrew completely; they moved very little and ate and drank at times when the other rats were sleeping in order to avoid contact with them. Other non-dominant males were hyperactive; they were much more active than is normal, chasing other rats and fighting each other. This segment of the rat population, likeall the other parts, was affected by the overpopulation.The behavior of the non-dominant males and of the other components of the rat population has parallels in human behavior. People in densely populated areas exhibit deviant behavior similar to that of the rats in Calhoun's experiments. Culture-loaded words require translators to precisely convey semantic information in original language, and simultaneously maintain original cultural features to the uttermost. During translation process, translators have to consider multiple factors such as original language features, translation objective, and target reader features and find best translation techniques as far as possible. Targeted at relatively great discrepancy in English cultural translation, there are four translation strategies in culture-loaded word translation.(1) Foreignization: maintaining connotations of original language culture by literal translation method or transliteration method.(2) Domestication: realizing functional equivalence by free translation method or replacing inaccessible or ambiguous culture words.(3) Integration: illustrating original language and maintaining cultural connotations of original language for the convenience of audiences.(4) Deletion: reducing inference of subtitle on acoustic image by directly deleting culture words hard to translate and unassociated with textual coherence.Proper names. Because of its longevity, it can experience the life progress that many other creatures cannotundergo. In Kung Fu Panda, a venerable master is a tortoise; he is Po’s Shifu and called “Master Oogway”which is translated into “乌龟大师”. He is also the represent of reigns supreme and the incarnate of wisdom.Using the Pinyin transliteration words “乌龟大师” directly, obvious, this word is very strange to foreignaudience, but just due to this strange pronunciation and spelling form that can arouse the curiosity of audienceand experience the mysterious state of master. Why not called this role “Master Tortoise”? Because tortoise is aslow, ugly, and common animal in western cultural image, the use of the strange Chinese transliteration wordcan add to make that image more mysterious and exotic.Another Chinese transliteration words is “Master Shifu”. “Master Shifu” reflects the cultural images which indicate “teacher’s dignity” totally by the pronunciation. Recognition and Image Analysis research group works mainly in the areas of Statistical Pattern Recognition(Classification),Biomedical Image Analysis,Complex Shape Description and Evolutionary Computation.Within the Classification framework,the group deals with the study and analysis of tech-niques for designing recognition systems with high reliability.Such a task can be extremely complex because the classes to be discriminated could be highly overlapped and/or the training set used to train the system could give an imper-fect representation of the problem.The original methods recently proposed by the group on journals and international conferences include the study and the implementation of:Classification systems made of cooperating classifiers.In many complex problems,a single classifier may not be sufficient to ensure the accuracy and theflexibility required.These objectives can be achieved through the com-bination of multiple classifiers,which exploit the strengths of each classifier [12–16].Classification systems for two-class problems.Among the two-class clas-sification problems fall many particularly critical situations(automatic diag-nosis,authenticity verification of persons,notes and signatures,etc..).These require highly reliable classification system since a wrong decision can run an action exactly opposite to that actually required.In this context,the group2 C.De Stefano et al.has proposed methods based on the use of ROC(Receiver Operating Char-acteristic)curve,which allows a reliable analysis for different distributions of the classes and the cost of classification[17,18].Classification systems for cost-sensitive problems.Such problems deal with situations where different classification errors involve very dissimilar conse-quences.As an example,consider the case of automatic diagnosis systems:to recognize as sick a healthy patient is much less critical than the opposite er-ror.This is true for the correct classifications as well,since the benefit gained from the correct identification of a disease is much greater than that related to the proper recognition of a healthy patient.For this reason,when devel-oping classification systems to be used in such situations one must take into account the different costs and benefits that the different decisions involve [19,20].Medical Image Analysis This kind of applications involves the analysis and the interpretation of medical images for clinical purposes,i.e.,to reveal, diagnose or examine a disease.In this context,the group is mainly active on the design of techniques for the detection of breast cancer in mammographic images,a topic that will be better presented in section2[3,4].Classification systems for cursive handwriting In the framework of ana-lytical approaches to cursive word recognition,many studies have shown that complex movements like handwriting can be seen as a composition of ele-mentary movements,each corresponding to an elementary shape.Following this approach,the decomposition of a word into simpler units can be seen asa hierarchical process:a word is seen as composed of characters,which,inturn,are made of simpler parts corresponding to elementary shapes,which are the basic units used to produce handwriting.According to such a decom-position scheme,our approach to handwriting analysis proceeds bottom-up, byfirstly detecting the shape primitives,or strokes,embedded into the word, then grouping the primitives to form characters and eventually recognizing the whole word[21–23].Feature selection methods for remote sensing applications In this kind of applications,a large number of features belonging to different domains is usually available and the selection of an effective subset of them,i.e.a subset that allows to maximize the performance of the subsequent clustering or classification process,represents a very important task.To face this problem, we have proposed an evolutionary approach in which feature subsets are represented by individuals of an evolving population.Evolution is controlled by afitness function taking into account statistical properties of the input data in the subspace represented by each individual.More specifically,the fitness function evaluates class separability by considering two aspects:(i) the spreading out degree of samples in each class around their mean vector;(ii)distances among class mean vectors[24–26].In the following Sections,two systems dealing with complex classification prob-lems will be presented and discussed.PRIA@UniCas3 2A Method for Detecting Cluster of Microcalcifications on Mammograms2.1The ProblemBreast cancer is the most common cancer among women,excluding cancers of the skin.In2007,breast cancer will account for nearly one out of every four cancer diagnoses in women.In the U.S.,breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women as a whole(after lung cancer).Mammography is a radiological screening technique capable to detect lesions in the breast using low doses of radiation.It represents the only not invasive diagnostic technique allowing the diagnosis of a breast cancer at a very early stage,when it is still possible to successfully attack the disease with a suitable therapy.For this reason, programs of wide mass screening via mammography for the female population at risk have been carried out in many countries.A visual clue of breast cancer particularly meaningful is the presence of clusters of microcalcifications(seefig.2.1).Microcalcifications are tiny granule-like deposits of calcium that appear on the mammogram as small bright spots.Their size ranges from about0.1mm to0.7mm,while their shape is sometimes irregular.Besides being arranged into clusters,microcalcifications can appear isolated and spread over the breast tissue,but in this case they are not indication of a possible cancer.However, even in the case of clustered microcalcifications their nature is not necessarily malignant,and thus the radiologist must carefully analyze the mammogram to decide if the appearance of the cluster suggests a malignant case.Such decision is taken on the basis of some properties(shape,size,distribution,etc.)related to both the single microcalcifications and the whole cluster.Fig.1.Example of a cluster of microcalcifications.Unfortunately,the low quality of mammographic images and the intrinsic dif-ficulty in detecting likely cancer signs make the analysis particularly fatiguing, especially in a mass screening where a high number of mammograms must be examined by a radiologist in a day.As a consequence,to avoid missed malignant cases,the behavior of the radiologist inclines to be quite cautionary in the case of doubt,prescribing to the patient a further diagnostic procedure much more4 C.De Stefano et al.invasive such as a biopsy.The drawback of such approach is a high number of non productive biopsy examinations,with very high economical and social costs. In this case,a computer aided analysis could be very useful to the radiologist both for prompting suspect cases and for helping in the diagnostic decision as a“second reading”.The goal is twofold:to improve both the sensitivity of the diagnosis,i.e.the accuracy in recognizing all the existing clusters and its speci-ficity,i.e.the ability to avoid erroneous detections which can lead to unnecessary alarms.In recent years there has been a significant development of Computer Aided Detection(CADe)systems for automated detection and classification of micro-calcifications clusters in digitized mammograms.Two recent surveys by Cheng et al.[1]and Nishikawa[12]present a comparative analysis of various algorithms and techniques for the diagnosis of breast cancer on mammograms.Two gen-eral approaches are commonly used[5]:the application of statistical techniques directly to the image data or the segmentation of the image through signal iden-tification followed by a classification phase.2.2CADe:the MethodThe method here presented falls within the second approach described in the previous section.Since the size of the digitized mammographic image in input is greater than the region that contains the breast tissue,thefirst step consists in a pre-processing phase that recovers the region containing the breast tissue and deletes other signs or artifacts present in the image(seefig.2).Fig.2.The original mammogram(left)and the region containing the breast tissue (right).Once the breast region has been found,a segmentation phase is performed to decompose the image in homogeneous regions.In particular,the proposed seg-mentation is based on the MRF model but tries to solve its major drawback,i.e. the high computational complexity,through the use of a tree structured modelPRIA@UniCas5 and therefore,a Tree-Structured Markov Random Field based segmentation(TS-MRF)[2]is employed so obtaining a fast and quite spatially adaptive segmen-tation process.The segmentation step subdivides the mammogram in a huge number of homogeneous elementary regions(Regions of Interest-ROI)which are analyzed in the successive classification phase in order to identify the actual microcalcifications.To this aim,for each ROI,both geometrical and textural fea-tures are extracted according to the characteristics of the microcalcification.The classification phase is made of two steps:in thefirst one a heuristicfilter quickly discards the regions which are clearly non-microcalcifications.In particular,all the regions with size,shape or brightness strongly different from those typical for a microcalcification are classified as artifacts.The regions accepted in the first classification step have admissible characteristics for a microcalcification, but they still contain a large number of false positives.The second classification step aims at locating the actual microcalcifications by means of a more refined (and computationally demanding)classification system(seefig.3).To this aim,Fig.3.The mammogram after segmentation(left)and classification(right).a new approach based on a multiple classifier system has been adopted.In this way,at the end of the whole classification phase each region accepted by the heuristicfilter is labelled with a confidence degree which reflects the likelihood of a microcalcification occurring in that region.The last two steps of the CADe system are the grouping of ROI into clusters and their validation.The clus-tering is accomplished by analyzing the spatial coordinates and the confidence degree associated to each ROI and gives a possible partition in clusters.The cluster-ing algorithm that has been employed is based on a sequential approach called Moving Leader Clustering with Merge[4].Once the candidate clusters have been identified,the validation is made on each whole cluster according to the characteristics of ROIs that it groups.Some further features are extracted according to the spatial and textural characteristics of the clusters and using all these features a decision on each cluster is taken.6 C.De Stefano et al.2.3Experimental ResultsThe system has been tested on a standard database,publicly available on the Internet,provided by courtesy of the National Expert and Training Centre for Breast Cancer Screening and the Department of Radiology at the University of Nijmegen,the Netherlands.It con-tains40digitized mammographic images composed of both oblique and craniocaudal views from21patients.All images have a size of2048x2048pixels and use12bits per pixel for the gray levels.Each mammogram has one or more clusters of microcalcifications marked by radiol-ogists;each cluster is described by the centre and the radius of a circle totally containing it.The total number of clusters is105,76of which are malignant and 29benign.In order to have a training set adequately representative,in all the ex-periments we have adopted a“leave one image out”cross validation.According to this procedure we accomplish40different runs,in each of which39images are used for training and one for testing.In order to assess the performance of the described method,we have considered the number of cluster correctly detected by the system(True Positive,TP)and the number of the erroneous detections (False Positive,FP):these parameters are the most interesting from the diag-nostic point of view.Infig.5some outputs of the system are shown:the white blobs indicate the detected clusters,while the regular circles denote the clusters marked by the radiologists.It is The results obtained on all the set of images show a good behaviour of the de-scribed system in detecting the actual clusters.In particular,the system reachedPRIA@UniCas7 the90%of clusters correctly identified with1FP per image and the98%of TP with2.2FP per image.In summary the method works well in the detection of the clusters(good sensitivity)while it is quite effective in terms of specificity.3Combining single class features for improving performance of a two stage classifier3.1The ProblemWe propose a feature selection–based approach for improving classification per-formance of a two stage classification system in contexts where a high number of features is involved.A problem with a set of N classes is subdivided into a set of N two class problems.In each problem,a GA–based feature selection algorithm is used forfinding the best subset of features.These subsets are then used for training N classifiers.In the classification phase,unknown samples are given in input to each of the trained classifiers by using the corresponding sub-space.In case of conflicting responses,the sample is sent to a suitably trained supplementary classifier.The system architecture we propose is shown in Fig.5.According to our approach,system training is performed in three phases:first a problem with a set of N classes C={Cl1,Cl2,...,Cl N}is divided into a set of N problems.For each problem,the best subset of features F S i,which allows the system to better discriminate the class Cl i(i=1,2,...,N)against all the others(i.e.,C−Cl i) is found by means of a GA.In the second phase,for each class Cl i,a different SVM is trained with samples described using the features of the subspace F S i. Thus,the i–th SVM is able to discriminate the samples of the i–th class from those belonging to any other.In the third phase,a supplementary SVM classifier is trained using the same training set samples used in the second phase,each described according to the following criterion:if the sample was recognized by one or more SVM’s,it is described using the union of the feature subsets relative to those SVM’s;if the sample was not recognized by any SVM,it is described by using the whole set of features.The set of the N SVM’s trained in the second phase,makes up thefirst stage of our classification system.The supplementary SVM classifier is the second classification stage.In the classification phase,an unknown sample is given in input to each of the SVM’s of thefirst stage by using for its description the feature subset associated to that SVM.The box F S i infigure1represents thefilter selecting the proper feature subset for the i–th SVM.Different cases may occur:(i)only the i–th SVM recognizes the sample as belonging to the i–th class;(ii)more that one SVM recognize the sample; This paper compares these two representative cultures and explores their similarities and differences, so as to better understand British and American cultures.Literature ReviewBritish Gentleman CultureThe origin of British gentleman culture mainly comes from two aspects, one is the noble spirit and the other is the cultural value of the middle class. On the basis of noble spirit, it integrated the values of other classes, and different values developed continuously in the collision, thus forming the gentleman culture we know now. In medieval England, “gentry” was still a social stratum, and its social status was second only to that of noble. Men of this stratum were called “gentleman” when they came of age. Gentleman culture, as a culture derived from aristocratic spirit, was also greatly influenced by Queen Victoria of England. It was under her rule that Britain got the title of “State of Etiquette”. Queen Victoria attaches great importance to personal etiquette and self -cultivation, and her name of elegant personal self-cultivation resounds throughout the European continent. Queen Victoria's high expectations of herself had a great influence on the middle class society at that time. Countless middle-class people have imitated Queen Victoria one after another. It is for this reason that gentleman culture has been greatly improved and developed. Gentleman culture is the essence of English culture. Gentleman’s spirit contains many excellent characteristics of chivalry, paying attention to personal demeanor, good manners and communication etiquette, identity and honor, and pursuing fairness, justice, freedom, and competition. Nowadays, gentlemanly demeanor has become a symbol of men’s high quality, a basic personality criterion for men, and an affirmation and praise for men (Cai, 2007). American Cowboy CultureCowboy culture originated in the western United States in the early 19th century. At that time, the western part of the United States was still a relatively undeveloped area, and people needed a lot of labor to reclaim land and raise cattle. As a result, many people began to flock to the western region in search of jobs and opportunities. In this process, some people began to engage in equestrian and cow-driven work, and they became what we now call cowboys. These cowboys work in the wild, ride horses, drive away cattle and protect them from wild animals and thieves. Although they were only exploited by the bourgeoisie at first, over time, these cowboys formed their own culture in their work, including special clothes, food, and music. This is what we now call cowboy culture. American cowboy culture, rising from the ground, is a kind of culture that can stimulate unlimited imagination. With the strength of America, American culture has become popular all over the world. Cowboy culture is deeply rooted in the hearts of people with the cowboy images in western movies, and has become a great representative of American culture. Jeans and jeans clothing have become unique symbols of American cowboy culture. The traditional image of cowboy: independent, free, rebellious, rough, bold, chic, brave, ambitious, adventurous, and like to express themselves! The spirit of cowboys is “freedom”, which is equivalent to doing what you want, going your own way and being a man. Such a state may be what everyone wants, but not everyone can achieve it. No matter what your status, age, height, fat, and thin, everyone is equal, the world is the same. The packaged person is definitely the real self, and everything else is filtered out. Exploring the essence of jeans is also the spiritual realm of current sensor pursued by modern people-brave, firm, fearless, and indomitable (Smithson, 2014).Theoretical FrameworkBritain and the United States are two countries with similar blood ties in history, but they show different cultural images in front of the world: Britain is regarded as an elegant and noble gentleman, while the United States is a brave and tough fighter “cowboy”. There is no difference between the image of a gentleman and that of a cowboy. They represent two different national spirits. To a great extent, this image also explains the historical development of the two countries.Therefore, the present research, based on the comparison and contrast of British gentleman culture and American cowboy culture, firstly, introduces the characteristics of British gentleman culture; secondly, introduces the characteristics of American cowboy culture; and finally, it compares the British gentleman culture with the American cowboy culture and analyzes their differences.Results and DiscussionAs far as historical origin is concerned, Britain and the United States share the same vein, so they have someBRITISH GENTLEMAN CULTURE AND AMERICAN COWBOY CULTURE383commonalities. Both British gentlemen and American cowboys have a strong sense of mission in the initial stage of their values development, and loyalty and bravery become their first nature. In addition, they all pursue independence and freedom. English gentlemen have inherited the spirit of the British nobility in pursuing freedom and opposing autocracy. The history of British aristocrats runs through the struggle against the king’s autocracy and for autonomy. Cowboy spirit also represents independence and freedom. Cowboys are the typical representatives of the pioneers in the western United States. They break away from the shackles of established systems and the shackles of civilization. They often fight for independence, equality, and seek an independent and free life. Another commonality is that they all follow the principle of fairness. Both the image of a gentleman in English literature and the image of a cowboy in American movies, though one is introverted and the other is extroverted, will not achieve their goals in an opportunistic way. Even in British and American literature, the contempt of gentlemen or cowboys for secretly framing others can be reflected. Therefore, the way for gentlemen and cowboys to solve contradictions is to choose a fair duel. The process of duel is a process of fair competition. The pursuit of correct value and the yearning for noble quality of two different cultures are the same.British and American cultures represent two cultures with different connotations, and there are differences between them. First, gentlemen are conservative and self-styled, while cowboys are open to change. There are many factors in the development of gentleman culture, which inevitably create the characteristics of gentleman’s superiority, conservatism, and self-styled. The history of cowboys is a history of struggle for adventure and change of destiny. The origin of cowboys determines that cowboys should strive for change, and adventure, change, and continuous development are their initial and final choices. Second, gentlemen advocate cultivation of intelligence, while cowboys pay attention to practical skills. Gentleman’s accomplishment is not only reflected in his elegant speech, decent manners, fashionable clothes, comprehensive manners, and other external manifestations, but more importantly, a gentleman must have good education, rich knowledge, self-discipline, courage to take public responsibility and other internal qualities. If gentleness is a gentleman’s trademark, boldness and competence are typical characteristics of cowboys. Cowboys need not only strength and courage, but also all kinds of knowledge and practical skills to survive in the wasteland. Most successful pioneers are skilled and versatile. Third, gentlemen are self-disciplined, while cowboys are willful. British gentlemen are bound by education and are absolutely not at the mercy of passion. Compared with gentlemen, cowboys are more natural and willful, thus creating the simple, bright, and undisguised character of cowboys.ConclusionBritain is a traditional European country with a long history. In the past few centuries, British society has been in the state of feudal agricultural society, and it was not until the industrial revolution that it gradually transformed, so the British conservative tradition was deeply rooted. In this case, the British are cautious about change, guarding their own historical and cultural heritage and not making changes easily. And there also has been a long-standing hierarchy and monarch in its society. Therefore, British people are more nostalgia and conservatism. As mentioned above, the perfection and development of English gentleman culture is greatly influenced by Queen Victoria. The United States is just a young country with no deep historical accumulation. Since there are not many traditional things for them to remember and inherit, they need to develop. Various liberation movements and revolutions have thus promoted the opening of American culture. In addition, America is an immigrant country; people from all countries and regions in the world are in America. So, American culture is also very receptive and inclusive, and can accept and absorb all cultural factors. In the novel, Thackeray has created two female images --- Becky and Amelia, who are fresh and plump. 在同一时期的美国,《汤姆索亚历险记》是以美国少年为主体的现实主义小说之一。
本文通过对两部小说主人公形象的分析,了解当时英美所处的发展阶段,探讨作者所要表达的主题,帮助读者阅读和理解英美19世纪这一时期的文学作品。

Introduction of the image of Oliver and Tom SawyerOliver is an unfortunate and pitiful orphan who was born in the narrow room of a parochial workhouse. Oliver was adopted by a parochial workhouse because of his mother’s death. Since Oliver came here, he suffered a lot and starved all the time. But he is a child of a noble nature and a warm heart. No matter when or where he was in, keeping a pure and kind-hearted nature of a child even as evildoers hurt or taught him how to steal. Although he ever once was forced to steal a rich man’s properties, he still wanted to be a good boy. At the same time, he is a brave boy. He can choose to face bravely rather than escape as he met difficulties and adversities every time. For example, as he was in workhouse, he was first one to required manager give them more gruel, which never happened in managers’ experiences before.Tom was an orphan who lost his parents and brought up by his aunt. Meanwhile, he was a child who was full of the spirit of adventure and curiosity. He was naughty and liked to play some tricks that other people can’t predict. He always escaped from school to do some things what he was interested in together with his friends. He liked to play tricks on others, having a strong sense of compassion and a sense of justice as well as pretty right-minded and honest. When he was in trouble, he always can keep himself calm and analyzed calmly then attempted to find available measures to solve problems. He was always full of curiosity and imagination to the outside world. He also was brave and resourceful and always dare to try bravely and was full of strong sense of freedom and future.Ⅱ. A Comparative Analysis of the Image of Two ProtagonistThe image of two protagonists both truly reflected the social circumstances of the age that they were in. Tom and Oliver both were orphan as if they were destined to be lonely from the beginning of their birth and can’t get the warm and true love and care of their own parents. In their inner heart, there is a fear for the cold and strange world. When they met disturbing things or had some ideals, they didn’t know what they should do and how to reveal their emotions. Just because there is no reliable people. All kinds of troubles attacked them, they must be strong and seek the measures to solve problems. Characteristics of diligence and independence were displayed from the moment of theirbirth. As time went on, it’s essential to do physical work.Both were kind-hearted, enthusiastic, honorable and bright. Take it for example, as Tom had known that Joe would kill widow to make his hatred that her husband gave. Although he knew Joe caught him and would kill him quickly, he decided to come to widow’s home to tell her the news and helped her avoid this terrible disaster. Another boy, Oliver, as well as Tom, Oliver was always willing to do what he can do to help Rose to express his feeling of gratefulness. One day, he was injured and abandoned by his company in an isolated valley. Soon, he woke up and walked forward to busy place with extremely weak body and pain. At last, he was saved by Mrs Maylie. Finally, brave and strong sense of reward was another similar image. For instance, vicious Noah aggravated and tantalized young Oliver by slandering his mother. He can’t enable himself to bear bad people like the way that he used before. He adopted action to fight with Noah. It was a cold and dark night, there was no wind, the shadows of trees were thrown on the ground, looking like an evil. Under horrible environment, he left the town for London lonely on foot. More terrible, the road forward to London almost was strange for him. Meanwhile, Tom’s adventure also was impressive. The cemetery and the forest were the main place where he always went.Their parents left them early years. Firstly, in some degree, Tom was more lucky than Oliver. His aunt was really concerned about him and offered him a warm and fixed habitation and delicious food. He never considered where he should go as the dark came. He can accept school education and recognize some new friends. However, Oliver never had a comfortable habitation. It’s absolutely possible to sleep on the street, ground and coffin in the evening. The opportunity of learning was a luxury. Hungry, cold and hurts surrounded him every day. The people around him were very indifferent to him, and no one sincerely cared about him. He was always doing the endless work. There was no friend around him except Dick. Oliver was glad to see him before he left the town. Dick was his only friend and playmate. For a long time, they had been beaten, starved, and shut up together. That time Oliver accepted genuine wishes in his later life. He never once forgot him. Second, Tow was freer than Oliver. He always could do what he liked. After school, he had a fun with his friends. When he didn’t want to have lesson, he could escape from school to adventure and play game. After boring feeling came, he could go back home to sleep comfortably. His life was full of freedom, there was no bad people around him, no matter when he could leave then went to the places what he was interested in. Third, as far as I’m concerned, Tom was more brave than Oliver. Two boys both had strong sense of yearning for outside world. Tom went to a number of places where it was full of challenge and stimulation. At that midnight, all people went to sweet dream. They appeared in street or forest or graveyard. He always protected the girl who he loved in order to prevent her from punishing. Even if he was a little child, he always represented him as an “adult”. Therefore, it was essential for us to know themes that authors expressed through social and literary background.Oliver Twist was known as a critical realism novel in 1840s to 1850s.Outstanding author of realism novel vividly described the feature of Britain’s society and sharply criticized the system of capitalism. On the one hand, Britain’s critical realist satirized bourgeoisie and ruler. On the other hand, they expressed their strong sympathy for ordinary people. The comparisons between hypocritical and cruel ruler and honest ordinary people were quite obvious. Through the portrayal of the opposite characters, critical realist revealed the corruption of the capitalist system. They also depicted the miserable life of ordinary people in detail through revealing the unfair of society and bad convention of up-class. However, critical realist was not able to find a way that can lead people out of painful and miserable life. They sympathized them but didn’t know how to help them get rid of miserable life.Oliver Twist was a work that was written by Charles Dickens during Victorian age and became a superpower in the world because of development of capitalism. Behind the flourishing country, the poverty and bad luck can be seen everywhere. Since the prosperity scene was growing up in the factories and collieries where were dangerous and dirty. The class conflict had become much clearer, which broke out constantly at the beginning of 1836 still to 1848. Oliver Twist was written after the parliament past the “Poor Law” that permitted the poor accepted public help. The UK is experiencing a transform that from countryside to city, from urban economy to industrial economy. The more and more poor people would rather starve to death than ask for help. But the protagonist, Oliver, was an orphan. Going to workhouse was his only choice for him. The darkness of workhouse was essential because of their endless greed.The Adventure of Tom Sawyer was a realistic novel written by Mark Twain and published in 1876. Meanwhile, it displayed vividly the real capitalist society condition of American by describing a town along the Mississippi River. In the first half of 19th century, the industrial economy of American had been developing rapidly under the influence of Second Industrial Revolution, which enabled American society to enter a free and open a situation. Soon, more and more people started to pursue the wealth crazily. As far as they’re concerned, money was an important means and standard to enter the up-class society. And people’s material life and thought both changed a lot. Gold Rush had become a popular trend and started to seek treasure crazily, which made America enter The Gilded Age and violently impacted the thought of people. Despite the town that Tom lived was narrow and implosive even far distant with industrial city. Some people attempted to change their conventional ideals then Tom was the representative of this phenomenon. He was eager to get a large number of treasures and spend a comfortable and free life. He always took his friends, Joe, to adventure and find money although it was dangerous. And he was disappointed with traditional conventions and mechanical school education. So in his opinion, school education collected their thought so that they can’t learn new things a lot and follow the trend of development of age.After Civil War, southern slavery wasn’t completely abolished. The system and conventions of religion changed in some degree. The Christian just knew a little about religion. For example, as Tom’s aunt went to church, she considered that people shouldn’t rebel God otherwise these people will be punished by God. During this period, Christian advocated that all people should be equal. However, they still agreed the slavery and advice monarch to govern country by it. There still exists plantation economy. Take it for example, those who lived in the place where Tom grew up still spend an idyllic life. School education also was stale and inflexible. Tom always escaped from school exactly because of it.In the first half of 19th century, there still exist hypocrisy and vulgar customs and many evil behaviors such as crime, drinking and prostitution, which were described vividly in this novel. Tom ever witnessed a murder. The murderer seems frightening and cruel and made many evil deed. Old Muff Potter liked drinking till became inebriated. One night, he drunk a lot, several hours passed, he got sober and was in a muddle. He can’t remind anything so that he can’t know what happened before clearly. His bad customs gave Joe opportunities to hurt him and let people regarded him as a murderer by mistake.Different writers have different themes, which can be seen obviously in their works. They can create wonderful and diversified plots for reader according to themes that they got accustomed to using. So, themes played a main role in the analyses of literary works. Then different images of two protagonists can be analyzed from the themes of two works.There were two themes in Oliver Twist.Firstly, the ending of story was depicted from sadness to joy. For instance, although Oliver suffered many hardship and humiliation, wherever he was, he always kept his kind and generous mind, the loyal love, the pure soul and nature of doing good deeds. Finally, all terrible things he suffered got satisfactory and fine reward because he met kind-hearted people and was saved by him such as Mr Brownlow, Rose, Dick and Mrs Maylie. He spent a happy life and obtained his own legacies with the help of kind people.Second, it praised kind people and they can got happy and content ending but displayed that all of bad people will be punished and had a miserable ending. Take several group of people for example. Kind and beautiful Rose Fleming and gentle Harry Maylie were married in the village church happily after they broke through concept that tripped up their identity. Mrs Maylie took up her abode with her son and daughter-in-law, to enjoy in the tranquil remainder of her days. Mr Brownlow adopted Oliver as his son. Removing together with him and the old housekeeper to the parsonage-house and lived happily. Monks retired with his portion to a distant part of the New World. He quickly squandered it and went back his old road. Eventually he died in prison.Mr Fagin was sent to court and punished by law. And Mr Noah received a free pardon from the Crown in consequence of being admitted approver against Mr Fagin.Mr and Mrs Bumble, deprived of their situation, were gradually reduced to great indigence and misery, and finally became pauper in that very same workhouse in which they had once lorded it over others.The story of The Adventure of Tom Sawyer happened in a small town along the Mississippi River in the United States in the first half of 19th Century. His experiences brought us to a new and stimulant world such as playing interesting game, swimming in the river, spending an exciting life as a corsair and finding treasure in the graveyard or forest.Second, this novel revealed the hypocritical vulgar social customs, hypocritical religious rituals and stereotyped hackneyed school education by Tom’s experience and personal features. He was addictive with freedom and the life of a corsair. For instance, he liked playing tricks on his classmates even his teaches when he went to school because his teacher didn’t show them new knowledge rather than Bible, which formed a bondage for people’s thought.Ⅳ. Different Influence of the Image of Two ProtagonistsOliver’s images of kindness, honesty and real love not only had an influence on the characters of the other literary works at that time, but also had certain effect on the contemporary young people's outlook of world, life and values. For example, when Oliver Twist was published and became the many people favorite books between ordinary people and up-class people. The author spent a year to write another book , David Copperfield under the influence of the image of Oliver that created in Oliver Twist . So the image of Copperfield is similar with Oliver’s. He had a miserable life at first then met many bad people who hurt and maltreated him. Eventually, his aunt found him and left her inheritances for him and he had a happy life.In the later of 20th century In China, one-child policy was past and many people actively responded to national policy. So there just was one child in people’s family. These children who were spoiled by their parents and grandparents, and they had a happy and unforgettable childhood. However, it was easy to make them selfish, irritable, with a strong personal ideology. They hoped others can be controlled by them, even didn’t want to share their own things with other people. And nowadays, more and more people get very indifferent, they always ignored those who need help in order to make themselves not misunderstood by others. Oliver’s kind, pure and sincere, friendly images could wake up many people's conscience and appealed them to believe that their kindness would be rewarded and help those who need help indeed.Tom was a clever and mischievous child who gathered talents of wisdom, strategy, justice, courage and leadership with the nature of the child, which just was the lack of contemporary teens. His adventures are against the dull school life. He yearned for freedom, and we also will inevitably influenced by him, however, nowadays, our school life have became diverse, rich, unlike the previous church school, so it wasn’t necessary for us to learn him running away from home without permission, to be a pirate. Of course, we should learn his good qualities of wisdom, strategy, fantasy and brave love.Tom Sawyer was a successful example of adventures for teenagers. His spirits of exploration, adventure and his wisdom and courage, making teenagers who read book felt hope and desire, producing a positive effect. However, it was dangerous for them to believe that the luck and the strong sense of adventure were important factories to be successful instead of diligent learning and efforts.Ⅴ.ConclusionOliver was twined tightly by the starvation, the disservice, and the illness. These can bring their young lives to an end any time. Charles Dickens’ writing styles and themes can be seen obviously through the images of Oliver. In the first half of 19th century, the industrial economy of American had been developing rapidly under the influence of Second Industrial Revolution. Mark Twain used cheerful tone to depict the children’s lively mind. Therefore, images of Tom was popular that moment.
