Culture Differences between China and America

Culture Differences between China and America----final paper of Intercultural CommunicationWritten by 阅微草堂Abstract: The intercultural communication is becoming more and more important since the rapidly development of globalization, and understanding the differences between different cultures is necessary as well. There are two aspects of culture differences are listed in this essay and the reasons are further discussed. Keywords: culture difference; the way of thought pattern; individualism; collectivism; geographic environmentIntroductionCulture is the combination of material wealth and spiritual civilization created by human beings in the long history process, including all the things, such as manners, customs, the ways of thinking, value orientations, beliefs, religions, and so on. People from different countries or even from different areas in one country have different cultures, as a saying goes,”Customs are different within ten miles.”Thus, intercultural communication, the communication between different people with different cultures or languages, becomes more and more important, as the development of globalization. Particularly for us Chinese, it has been even more necessary, since we carried out the policy of reform and openness in 1979 and joined WTO in 2001. In the following part, some culture differences between China and America are discussed and the reasons of them are explored as well.1 Culture Differences between China and AmericaBoth China and America are big countries with vast territories, numerous nations and kinds of subcultures. For example, people from north China and south China have many barriers when communication because of culture differences including language differences, in America, similarly. In this essay, Chinese culture means the popular culture in China ignoring the sub-cultural differences in China. Likewise, American culture means the popular culture in America. There are two differences are listed below.(1)The Way of Thought PatternsThe way of thought patterns serves as a bridge linking external behaviors with internal thoughts, or, in other words, outer actions with interior cultures. The different ways of thought patterns stem from cultural differences, meanwhile lead to different outside manifestations. The main feature of Chinese way of thought deeply influencedby Confucianism and Taoist-culture is holistic and dialectical thinking, while American way is characterized by logic analysis originated from Aristotelianism, which was based on and developed the culture of ancient Greek. For example, the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is obviously different with western medicine. From the view of TCM, our body is an interrelated whole consisted of all the tissues and organs closely associated with each other. The whole body will be treated when curing a certain disease. Or one part will be treated which is seemly has no relationship with the disease part, for the two parts are linked deeply from the point of TCM view. While the western medicine prefers to penetrate into the certain part of disease to deal with the cells, bloods, germs or virus. This is only one example of countless differences between China and America culture appearances. From some perspectives, the way of thought patterns is the directly reflection of culture, and all the surface differences which derive from culture differences can stem from the differences of thought patterns.(2)Individualism vs. CollectivismGenerally speaking, collectivism is more distinct in Chinese culture while the American culture trends to individualism orientation. American Heritage Dictionary gives the following definition of “individualism”: (1) Belief in the primary importance of the individual and in the virtues of self-reliance and personal independence; (2)A doctrine of freedom from government regulation of personal economic or social goals; (3) The doctrine that the interests of the individual should take precedence over the interests of the group. Americans adore personality, uniqueness, genius, and the fullest development of capabilities and talents. And they respect children and elders equally, and protect their won self-respect hammer and tongs. However, Chinese emphasize group cooperation and modesty. There is a complex society structure of China, in which each person can find a determinate position. For example, Chinese are more likely to have good friends which they can get help from in their lives or careers. Americans are more personalized and they prefer to accomplish their jobs by his or her own ability.Another example, in china, when we refer to the word “brother”, we chronically divide it into “elder brother” or” younger brother”. And “elder brother” isn’t the same as”younger brother”. Also, the positions of them in the society structure are significantly distinguishing. Generally speaking,” younger brother” should show morerespect to and comply with “elder brother” and “elder brother” should take care of ”younger brother”, sometimes even like a father. But in America, this phenomenon doesn’t obvious. No matter “elder brother” or” younger brother” is brother, showing respect to each other equally. Similarly, “aunt”, ”uncle”, ”sister” and other akin words mean a lot more in China than in America.2 Reasons of Culture DifferencesThe complexity of culture and culture differences determined that the factors leading to culture differences are excessive and complicated. In a word, the reasons of culture differences are natural environment and the developments of history, society, science and all the other things which are based on and limited by natural environments. Thought the factors are plentiful and intricate, the main crucial factor is geographic environment.Looking from the geographical position that, especially in ancient time, China was a mainland country with broad plains and suitable climate, the maritime power was limited in that time, resulting in based on agriculture production mode. This kind of mode was introversive, mainly affected by weather, earth and especially the cooperation of people, forming the long historical feudal society characterized with collectivism which is still deep-rooted in our resent Chinese society. While, Greece, the birthplace of western cultures including America, is located in coastal area, beneficial for sailing not farming, leading to the fully development of commercial society an outward society mode, in which people with open mind and pioneering spirit are in favor of competition, personality, uniqueness, genius, and the fullest development of capabilities and talents. Also, other factors influence culture differences in some extent, such as Confucianism, Aristotelianism, the Industrial Revolutions, the Renaissance, and the developments of science, technologies, arts, education and the intercultural communication and so on.ConclusionThe world is colorful because of the plenty of culture differences. There is no good or bad of cultures, no right or wrong of the ways to show cultures either. It is simply that different people do the same things in different manners. No matter whether we can understand them or not, we should show the fully respect to them. I believe this is the best way to make our life become more comfortable and make the world more harmonious.。

cultural difference

cultural difference

Cultural Difference between America and ChinaAfter watching Gua Sha this movie, I realize the difference between American and Chinese culture in depth. Gua Sha is a Chinese traditional treatment, in our view, it is very normal in our daily life, but in an American context, it is so horrible. If we want to live in America, leaning culture of America is very necessary. We usually know about the America is through movies or the American people which living in China. What I’ve learned over the y ears is that knowledge is usually useless. Sincere study of a culture is the only way to truly appreciate the differences. China can trace its traditions and customs for thousands of years. America is a melting pot of cultures that there is almost no specific American culture that can be said across the board.First of all, the Chinese looks more at the group collective than at individualism. But in America, people like to push individualism which has been a source of conflict with other cultures that look collectively. China people are more prone to look at how their acts affect the whole instead of how it affects them personally. We always see American movie which like to emphasize individualism. For example, spider man and super man, they all tell us about one person saves other people even whole world. In China, we pay more attention to group cooperation. (Rgraf, 2009)In addition, When people doing business in China, they had better become friends at first, doing business is becomes secondary as the parties get to know each better. In America, business associates are usually more aloof. There might be some social gathering but the business is more important and the socializing will besacrificed to get the job done if needed. The recognition of networking is becoming more pronounced. What’s more, as a international business person, learning about other culture can better for his business. (Rgraf, 2009)Greeting is the first step to form a culture. Informally, if we meet a friend in the str eet, we are used to say: “Hi, have you had your meal?” or “Where are you going?” When it is the case of two gentlemen, they tend to shake hands. However, in the US, the above questions are just questions, not greeting at all. They may think you’re inviting them to dinner if you ask about their meals. Usually, they’ll just give each other a smile or greet with a “Hi.”. They’ll shake hands only in some formal situations. By the way, American can leave a party or meeting without a formal conge, nor should they shake hands with every attendee like most of us will do here. (Docin ,2011)In Chinese families, we rarely say “Thank you” to other family members for receiving help or service. We usually say “Thank you” to a general friend and stranger. If we say it to best friends, they must feel that we treat them like stranger. A lot of people unaccustomed when people to do some intimacy behavior. Such as kiss cheek of others. But in the US, "thank you" is one of the most frequently used sentences. Teachers will thank a student for answering a question, husbands will thank his wife for making a coffee, mother will thank his child for opening the door.In America, people don’t like to rely on others when they doing some things. The kids of America are independent, the y don’t rely on their parents. When they go to school, they can make money when they have free time. Once they become adults, they will leave out their parents and find part time job or borrow money from the bank to pay their tuition fees. But in china, parents will pay all tuition fees from nursery school to university. Even when their child gets married, they need to buy house, car and something else for their child.Reputation of the individual is very important in China. If an action will humiliate someone or ruin a reputation, it is avoided. When shame occurs, the person sacrifices their job or whatever it is that will heal the shame. In America, reputations come and go overnight and in the end usually does not matter. The end result is more of the focus. A person is more likely to overlook a reputation to get the jobdone.(Rgraf,2009)Food is central to all societies and life styles. The changes in food culture reflect changes in the larger culture. The Chinese diet is consummate, and the process is complete, rigorous, in addition to these, its cooking methods such as complex and changeable characteristics in the world history of cooking is a monolith. All these lead to the unique food culture. In Chinese daily diet, the staple food is rice, noodles and miscellaneous grains. And the main dishes are livestock, poultry, vegetables, aquatic products, seafood and dry. They pay more attention to vegetable and meat collocation, advocating complementary collocation, color, smell, taste, shape, texture, such as the organic combination of the raise. There are all kinds of cooking methods, such as decoct, fry, blasting, fry, boil, and burn it, from, bake, rinse, stewed, smoked, boiled, steamed halogen, etc. So dishes change much. The United States is a typical immigration country, American cooking can be regarded as the combination of northand south. The time of Americans eating three meals and the Chinese are basically the same. The content of breakfast is mainly cereal, milk, bread, sausages and Lord; Lunch is more casually, most people will have some fast food in the workplace, such as sandwiches, hot dogs, etc.But dinner is more delicious, people will pamper themselves after a whole busy working day, which is regarded as the only formal family reunion dinner, usually having a little dish, such as steak, barbecue, fried chicken, matched with some green vegetables and fruits, staple food for bread, rice, etc. Before sleeping, the American people also eat some snacks, fruits as food taken late at night. Seen from the taste, the American people is very light. The taste of the food generally is salty and sweet, what is more , their cooking meat dishes are eliminated, fish bones first to skull and spur, shrimp crab shell. Americans hate to eat pig's knuckles, fat, chicken feet, and so on. In this point , it is quite different from the Chinese.(Banton & Linda)To sum up, Different cultures add the most colorful element to the world. The cultural differences should not be the obstacle to the civilization of human being. It ought to be the motivation of our going further.ReferenceRgraf,(2009). 10 Major Cultural Differences Between China and the United States.Retrieved November 12, 2011.from /hub/10-Major-Cultural-Differences-China-and-the-United-StatesDocin,(2011).culture difference. British trust the god, trust the dogma, they think it leads them to kindness. Americans believe in god as well, but they trust themselves than that. They advocate freedom, innovation. Their belief is alike, but their faiths are distinct. The Americans think, no matter what situation you are in, there are two things you must do and they ought to follow you through the whole life: have your own belief and to be educated .At education, both of them are brilliant. For Britain, it’s strict, pursuiting perfect. The British education slogan is “the best you can be”. For Americans, they express the education to the students by personality traits that make education full of vitality. Cultural differences between American and Chinese

Cultural differences between American and Chinese李京桦It is always interesting to study other cultures and it is extremely important to do just that if you are going to have interactions with them. You don’t want to insult someone or embarrass yourself and your own culture. China is one of those interesting cultures mainly because what we usually know about the country is through movies or the local Chinese restaurant. What I’ve learned over the years is that that knowledge is usually useless. Sincere study of a culture is the only way to truly appreciate the differences.Greeting and PartingIn China, When people meet acquaintances or friends, we always say ,“Have you eaten yet?” What are you going to do?”In English, people often employ the following expressions to greet each other “Good morning/evening/afternoon. “Fine day, isn’t it? ”How is everything going?”,etcWestern and Chinese cultures have diverse ways to deal with leave-takings: Western people always try to make their leaving sound reluctant by finding some reasons and apologize for it to make the leaving acceptable for both parties. They often signal several times before leaving. Such as,1.“I am afraid I must be off, I have to …”2.“Well,it’s been nice to see you again. I do enjoy ourtalk and the lovely dinner, but I must be going soon”.3.“Thank you very much for asking me over. I hope we’ll be able to get together again before long…”AddressingIn China, the surname comes first and then the given name. While westerners names are written and spoken with the given name first and the family name last.In a formal setting, westerners address men as "Mister" (Mr), married women as "Misses" ("Mrs."), and unmarried women as "Miss" ( "Ms."). These days many women prefer to be addressed using the abbreviations "Ms." , pronounced "miz".In an informal situation, westerners will introduce each other by first name, without titles, and occasionally by just the last name.Chinese use “title +surname” to address their superior or elders rather than call them surnames, while the superior or elders call the addressers their names. otherwise, the addresser may be considered as ill mannered, ill educated or rude.In west, Although they are different in age and status, they can call the other directly, namely, their names, even first names .They demonstrate the sense of intimacy and the conception of” Everyone is created equal”Compliments and ResponseFor example, if a hostess is complimented for her cooking skill ,how she will response in west and china?A Chinese hostess will apologize for giving you“Nothing”. She will say“I just made some dishes casually and they are not very tasty.”An western hostess is likely to say,” Oh, I am so glad that yo u liked it. I cook it especially for you.”The Americans are “straight forwardness”, the Chinese take pride in “modesty”. In the response to compliments. Chinese are tend to efface themselves in words or refuse it, although they do feel comfortable about the compliments. Thanks and ResponsesIn China,“Thank you” is not frequently used between intimate friends and family members because it may imply a certain distance between the addresser and the addressee.“Thank you” is widely used in English to show g ratitude in such cases as being invited, helped, given a gift, etc.Asking Personal AffairsPeople from China do not regard it as asking personal affairs when they ask others name、age、marital status、wages、personal life、belief and political points. It is regard as concerns. While the westerns will think you violate their right of privacy.when we talk to the westerns, we must avoid asking some questions like this:“How old are you?”“Are you married?”“How many children do you have?”“How much do you make?”“Do you go to the church?”InvitationIn the culture of British and America, it is very important to consult a time before you invite somebody to attend a banquet or take part in social activities. Esp. in America, invite somebody means you are borrow times of others. So they respect time very much. While in China, people are prefer to an uninvited guest.Western families advocate equality indaily life. The husbandand the wife usually have an equality voice in decision-making, and on certain matters, the children, too, have a vote. In the western, most old people do not live with the children or relatives. If they have enough money theywill buy house or apartments in places where other old people live.If they do not healthy and strong enough to livea lone, they would rather live in nursing houses for old people than be taken by their children. Therefore they want to stay young because youth stands For hope and energ, they do not like to grow old because they will not gain honor, respect or attention as old people.Attitudes towards gift-sendingTaboo about gifts and gift civilization, different cultural backgrounds are very different, now, with a story to illustrate this problem.Christmas was coming, and a boy a shiny shells for the teacher, it is a rare treasures in shell. The teacher asked: "where do you find such a unusual shells?".Children tell the teacher: "more than twenty miles away in a secret beach, sometimes have this kind of shiny shells washed ashore, and my daddy said, that is a very precious shells, so I walked more than 20 kilometers, pick up to as a shell for the teachers."The teacher said, "it's too beautiful, I'll cherish it. But should not go so far to find a present for me.The boy blinked his eyes, said: "a shell as a gift might be too light, I walk as a gift to you, too.Teacher clasped the little boy, excitedly said: "I really like your shells, but you" walk "the gift, I feel more cherish." .Speaking, in a civilized society, gift giving and receiving presents the quality of people can be quite, if people accept gift people don't think so, the men of the gifts but white are difficult.References:1.Difference Between American & Chinese Culture By RachelBennett,eHow Contributor2./thread-808478-1-1.html3./view/7d8148136c175f0e7cd1370a.html。

The differences in culture between America and China

The differences in culture between America and China

The Differences in Literature between America and ChinaEach country has its own culture. And there are many differences between different countries in culture. The big differences make the world a colorful and exciting planet for us to live in. We can have a better understanding of it if we compare the big cultural differences between America and China. They are different in geography, climate, history, economy, food, literature and so on. Among those big differences, I’d like to talk about their differences in literature.First, let’s look at American literature. Although America doesn’t have a long history, it still has rich resources in literature. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, American art and literature took most of its cues from Europe. Writers such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and Henry David Thoreau established a distinctive American literary voice by the middle of the 19th century. Mark Twain and poet Walt Whitman were major figures in the century's second half; Emily Dickinson, virtually unknown during her lifetime, is now recognized as an essential American poet. A work seen as capturing fundamental aspects of the national experience and character—such as Herman Melville's Moby-Dick (1851), Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), and F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (1925)—may be dubbed the "Great American Novel."Eleven U.S. citizens have won the Nobel Prize in Literature, most recently Toni Morrison in 1993. Ernest Hemingway who won the 1954 Nobel laureate, is often named as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Popular literary genres such as the Western and hardboiled crime fiction developed in the United States. The Beat Generation writers opened up new literary approaches, as have postmodernist authors such as John Barth, Thomas Pynchon, and Don DeLillo. The transcendentalists, led by Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, established the first major American philosophical movement. After the Civil War, Charles Sanders Peirce and then William James and John Dewey were leaders in the development of pragmatism. In the 20th century, the work of W. V. O. Quine and Richard Rorty brought analytic philosophy to the fore of U.S. academics. John Rawls and Robert Nozick led a revival of political philosophy. In the visual arts, the Hudson River School was a mid-19th-century movement in the tradition of European naturalism. The 1913 Armory Show in New York City, an exhibition of European modernist art, shocked the public and transformed the U.S. art scene. Georgia O'Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, and others experimented with new styles, displaying a highly individualistic sensibility. Major artistic movements such as the abstract expressionism of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning and the pop art of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein developed largely in the United States. The tide of modernism and then postmodernism has brought fame to American architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Philip Johnson, and Frank Gehry.Compared with America, China has a long and colorful history. As one of the Four Great Ancient Civilizations, undoubtedly, China has a lot of excellent and profound literature which has its own characters. China is another grand palace of art. Chinese characters have had many variants and styles throughout Chinese history. Tens of thousands of ancient written documents are still extant, from oracle bones to Qing edicts. This literary emphasis affected the general perception of cultural refinement in China, e.g. the view that calligraphy was a higher art form than painting or drama. Manuscripts of the Classics and religious texts (mainly Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist) were handwritten by ink brush. Calligraphy later became commercialized, and works by famous artists became prized possessions. Chinese literature has a long past; the earliest classic work in Chinese, the I Ching or "Book of Changes" dates to around 1000 BC. A flourishing of philosophy during the Warring States Period produced such noteworthy works as Confucius's Analects and Laozi's Tao Te Ching. Dynastic histories were often written, beginning with Sima Qian's seminal Records of the Historian, which was written from 109 BC to 91 BC. The Tang Dynasty witnessed a poetic flowering, while the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature were written during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Printmaking in the form of movable type was developed during the Song Dynasty. Academies of scholars sponsored by the empire were formed to comment on the classics in both printed and handwritten form. Royalty frequently participated in these discussions as well. The Song Dynasty was also a period of great scientific literature, and saw the creation of works such as Su Song's Xin Yixiang Fayao and Shen Kuo's Dream Pool Essays. There were also enormous works of historiography and large encyclopedias, such as Sima Guang's Zizhi Tongjian of 1084 AD or the Four Great Books of Song fully compiled and edited by the 11th century. For centuries, religious and social advancement in China could be achieved through high performance on the imperial examinations. This led to the creation of a meritocracy, although success was available only to males who could afford test preparation. Imperial examinations required applicants to write essays and demonstrate mastery of the Confucian classics. Those who passed the highest level of the exam became elite scholar-officials known as jinshi,a highly esteemed socio-economic position. Chinese philosophers, writers and poets were highly respected and played key roles in preserving and promoting the culture of the empire. Some classical scholars, however, were noted for their daring depictions of the lives of the common people, often to the displeasure of authorities. The Chinese invented numerous musical instruments, such as the zheng (zither with movable bridges), qin (bridgeless zither), sheng (free reed mouth organ), and xiao (vertical flute) and adopted and developed others such the erhu (alto fiddle or bowed lute) and pipa (pear-shaped plucked lute), many of which later spread throughout East Asia and Southeast Asia, particularly to Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Those are the brief introduction about the literature of America and China. We can tell many differences from it, yet there are still many differences which need us to discover by careful observation, study, analysis, comparison and practice.。

the different culture between America and China

the different culture between America and China

The Different Culture Between China and America As someone says, culture is the total accumulation of beliefs, customs, values, behaviors, institutions and communication patterns, that are shared, learned and passed down through the generations in an identifiable group of people. Each country has its own culture. And there are many differences between different countries in culture. The big differences make the world a colorful and exciting planet for us to live in. We can have a better understanding of it if we compare the big cultural differences between America and China. They are different in many aspects, such as values and beliefs, marriage and family, education and so on.Values and BeliefsCulture is just like an onion, the innermost skin is values and beliefs. In china, the interest of the community and country is more important than the interest of individual, but America tilts in the complete opposite direction. Americans advocate individual freedom and self-reliance, equality of opportunity and competition, material wealth and hard work. These three pairs are their basic values. How about china? Because of the influence of Confucianism, we Chinese stress benevolence, loyalty to the state, filial piety, righteousness and rites. Comparing of America, we don't like competition, but try to get the best of both worlds. What creates this situation? The big differences is based on childhood experiences and the values and beliefs of their families. What's more, we should believe that each culture has subliminal values and beliefs, which influences the behaviors of people. We'd better be exposed to all sorts of people with different values and beliefs, to create our own good values and beliefs, after all Confucius said “If three men are walking together, one of them is bound to be good enough to be my teacher.'' So, just have your passions in harmony with your values and beliefs, you will find that obstacles become opportunities and walls become hurdles that you can jump over.Marriage and FamilyMankind pass down through marriage and family. So, marriage and family are important part of culture. With the development of society, the patterns of marriage and family become more and more diversified both in China and America. But there is a growing view that marriage may not be necessary. What's worse, more and more youngs trend to "lightning weddings" —or instantaneous weddings —which often end in correspondingly fast divorces, which causes that the divorce rate become higher and higher. According to the survey, the divorce rate in America is higher than that in China. Despite that, more than a half of people believe in marriage and family, they all think they marry each other forlove. Generally speaking, the differences in marriage and family between America and China are not so big, even you can say they have many things in common, after all, they get together for love and all of the family members love each other.EducationWhen it comes to education, '' What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country.'' says a proverb. As we all know, American education and Chinese education are notably different, that creates the different culture in turn.Education in America is provided mainly by government, with control and funding coming from three levels: federal, state, and local. There are religious schools, which we don't have in China. American education focuses on the students' creativity and practical ability. In their classes, the teachers just play a role as leaders, but in China, the teachers instill the minds of students with knowledge, the students are completely listeners, they hardly come up with their own ideas. Gradually, they have the solid foundational knowledge, but they are lack of creativity. Besides in America, the college greek life is the very important life of students, the club activities are one of the school applied factors. But both of their intention are good.In my view, we should learn the professional knowledge well, butalso should we take part in the school activities, improve our interpersonal skills, develop fully. So that, we can prepare well for the future challenges! In one word, each country has its own culture. Although there are many differences among them, we should respect them and learn from each other. Especially ,in the modern century, who gives full play to its cultural advantage and boost the country’s soft power, who will win in most aspects. So, we must understand the differences in different countries' culture well, only in this way, can we get along with each other in peace.。

描写中美文化差异的大学英语作文Cultural Differences between China and AmericaIntroductionAs the two largest economic powerhouses in the world, China and America have had a significant impact on global politics, economics, and culture. Despite their close diplomatic ties, the two countries have very different cultures that can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. In this essay, we will explore the main cultural differences between China and America, focusing on aspects such as communication styles, social norms, and values.Communication StylesOne of the most noticeable differences between Chinese and American culture is their communication styles. In China, people value indirect communication and are often hesitant to express their opinions or emotions directly. This can be seen in the use of non-verbal cues such as facial expressions and body language to convey meaning. In contrast, Americans are more direct and explicit in their communication, preferring to state their opinions and feelings openly.Social NormsAnother major cultural difference between China and America is their social norms. In Chinese culture, there is a strong emphasis on hierarchy and respect for authority. People are expected to defer to their elders and those in positions of power. On the other hand, American culture values individualism and equality, with people being encouraged to speak their minds and question authority.ValuesFinally, Chinese and American culture have different values that shape their attitudes and behaviors. In China, traditional values such as collectivism, family loyalty, and filial piety are highly esteemed. On the other hand, America is known for its emphasis on personal freedom, independence, and pursuit of happiness. These contrasting values can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and conflicts between the two cultures.ConclusionIn conclusion, the cultural differences between China and America are vast and far-reaching, influencing everything from communication styles to social norms and values. While these differences can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and conflicts, they also offer an opportunity for mutual understanding and appreciation. By recognizing and respectingeach other's cultural differences, China and America can strengthen their relationship and build a more harmonious global community.。

As neighboring countries, the United States and Canada share many similarities, such as language, history, and geography. However, there are also significant cultural differences between the two nations that shape their values, beliefs, and behaviors. In this essay, I will explore someof the most notable differences between American and Canadian culture. One of the most apparent differences between the two countries is their attitude towards multiculturalism. While Canada has embraced multiculturalism as a core value, the United States has traditionally been more assimilationist. In Canada, the government actively promotes diversity, and many policies are designed to accommodate differentcultures and religions. For example, Canada has official bilingualism, and public institutions must provide services in both English and French. In contrast, the United Stateshas a more individualistic approach, where immigrants are expected to assimilate into American culture and adopt American values.Another significant cultural difference is the role of government in society. In Canada, the government plays a more significant role in providing social services, such as healthcare, education, and welfare. Canadians generallyhave a more positive view of their government and trust itto provide for their needs. In contrast, the United States has a more limited government, and many Americans believein individual responsibility and self-reliance. The government's role is seen as more limited, and there isoften skepticism about its ability to provide effective services.Religion is another area where the two countries differ. While both countries have a diversity of religious beliefs, religion plays a more significant role in American society. Many Americans are deeply religious, and religion often influences their values and political beliefs. In contrast, religion is less prominent in Canadian society, andCanadians tend to be more secular and less likely to identify with a particular religion. One area where the two countries share commonalities is their love of sports. Both Americans and Canadians are passionate about sports, with hockey being a particular favorite in Canada and football in the United States. However, there are differences in the way sports are played and viewed. For example, Canadians tend to be more reserved and polite in their sportsmanship, while Americans are often more competitive and aggressive. In conclusion, while the United States and Canada share many similarities, there are also significant cultural differences between the two nations. These differences shape their values, beliefs, and behaviors and contribute to their unique identities. Understanding these differences is essential for building strong relationships and promoting cross-cultural understanding.。

文化差异(CultureDifference):美国社会正在该变Am文化差异(Culture Difference):美国社会正在该变American Society is ChangingIn many nations , everyday activities are done in a planned , orderly manner. For example , formal relationships among people may be determined according to customs and habits that have existed for a long time . People visiting an informal country , such as the United States , may find that the American belief in personal initiative or freedom (including the freedom to disagree with those in authority ), and the whole economic system is quits confusing and uncontrolled . To some visitors such freedoms are too "loose" and too disorganized to be comfortable.Today , the United States is experiencing great change in every part of society ;therefore life in America may indeed seem confused . Social attitudes are being questioned . Americans are wondering: "Is there any morality ?" "Why has the nation never given all of its citizens full opportunity ?""What courses should be taught in school?" "What is the role of women in society ? "As visitors , you will notice that some Americans are beginning to leave the cities and make their homes in small cities and towns where life is quieter and slower . Political beliefs are changing . The kinds of skills needed by workers today differ from those in demand several years ago.Excerpted from " A Guide to U.S.A.
