Just what is“that”? It depends on where you are in theworld. Some of the most successful globalbusinesses on the planet are fast food chains.Their key to success is tailoring menus to suitdifferent tastes and cultures.People around the world have verydifferent preferences in food, and their diets areinfluenced by geography, local customs andreligious restrictions. Some cultures avoidcertain foods, or they will eat things youwouldn't. Fast food restaurants have embracedthese differences. For example, McDonald's maynot offer the same menu to Russian customersthat it does to Japanese customers, but people inboth countries receive a meal packaged in paperprinted with the company's identifiable “M”.Fastfoodcompaniesconductextensive research to tailor menus for regionaldifferences. So, in the busy city of Dubai, UnitedArab Emirates, where people's diets areinfluenced by their Muslim beliefs, McDonald'sserves up the McArabia burger. With grilledminced meat combined with onions and Arabianspices, the burger is based on a traditionalfavorite Muslim dinner. And what do hamburger restaurantspeoplewhere Japan, like countries in serveprefer to eat fish, sushi, and rice? It's simple:they offer a hot fried shrimp burger with a sideorder of steamed rice instead ofFrench fries.Burger chains offer local favoritesthroughout Asia. Korean burgers are porkpatties cooked in a traditional Korean barbecuegarlic sauce. Taiwanese diners favor spicychicken drumstick sandwiches, in line with theirtastes for spicy food and dark meat. Thailand'sfavorite fast food is a spicy pork burger and agreen tea pie dessert. Children in Spain ordertapas, a lot of small bites of local food favorites,at their local burger restaurant. AustraliaandNewZealandrestaurants reflect local food preferences byadding egg, bacon, beet root, and cheese toburgers. In India, cows are considered sacredand are never killed. Beef and pork are noteaten as this would be a serious offence to Hindubeliefs. Burger sellers faced a huge challenge inIndianlocal A Indians. for menus designingfavorite is the Chicken McCurry Pan, a blend oftomato sauce, mixed with chicken, baked, andserved on spiced bread and topped with cheese.Canadian fast food chains servesomething that looks like a traditional Canadiandish consisting of French fries covered in cheesecurds and gravy. The favorite in El Salvadoranburger chains, is filled with meatand cheese.Argentineans favor steak sandwiches based on alocal herbed sauce.Burger chains in the United Statesoffer local favorites, too. In New Mexico, youcan get peppers on your sandwich; breakfastburritos are served throughout the Southwest;and pineapple-topped burgers are offered inHawaii. Before chain restaurants opened inRussia, dining out was limited and not always apleasant experience. Waiters were usually rudeto many customers. So when morethan 125 fastfood burger restaurants opened across Russia, atheto rushed Russians 30,000 of recordopenings, lined up, and waited for hours to buyhamburgers and French fries, all because theywere served happily with a smile and athank-you. Russian people found this to be adelightful experience and made the Russian fastfood hamburger business the fifth largestmarket in all of Europe. The list of local favorites around theworld is endless. One thing is for sure: Peoplelike to eat, and fast food restaurants are readyand willing to sell them anything they desire. So,if being a restaurant entrepreneur is your dream, you'd better start planning your global menunow.3.3 Useful Expression1. depend on v.1) 取决于2) 依赖,依靠All living things depend on the sun for theirgrowth.万物生长靠太阳。
