Imagination and fantasy(幻想) can play an important role in achieving the things we fear(害怕). Children know this very well. Fred Epstein, in his book If I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of friends about Tom, a four-year-old boy with a cancer in his back bone. He came through several operations and a lot of pain by mastering his imagination.
Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes. Dr Epstein explained that it was actually a brilliant way for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led.
The day before his third trip to the operating room, Tom was terri bly afraid.”Maybe I could go as Superman,” he whispered to his mom. Hearing this, the mother hesitated (犹豫) for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume(戏装), but finally she agreed.
The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his hand to the people greeting him along the way. And Tom, with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation. The power of imagination need not be reserved (保留) for children only. We all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible, to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believed we could. Just as Dr. Epstein puts it, “If you can dream it,you can do it”.
It doesn‘t mean that you should dress as a superhero for you r next job interview. But, next time you are tested in a way that seems impossible, imagine what it would take to overcome it. Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first. So, let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream.

When school year is nearing an end in the United States, students are preparing for their final examinations. But not all young people graduate from high school. Students who leave are not likely to be as successful in life as those who finish at least high school. Since the 1940s, students who do not complete high school have had another choice. This is a certificate called the GED. GED is short for General Educational Development. People who have earned a GED can get admitted to college and continue their education.
To earn a GED, students must pass five examinations. These are in writing, social studies, science, reading and mathematics. Testing officials say a person who passes the test is at the same level as sixty percent of graduating high school students. This is in the level of ability to read, write, work with numbers and understand information.
Each year, more than 500,000 people take the GED examinations and about 70 percent pass. But research has shown that only about 11 percent of GED holders complete a year or more of higher education.
Some critics say earning a GED is not as good as completing high school. They say the test does not force people to study the way they have to in order to graduate. Critics say this is one reason GED holders generally do not stay in college. They also say the possibility of taking the G.E.D. test makes it easier for students to leave high school early.
Testing officials have made changes in recent years designed to make the exams more difficult. And both critics and supporters of the G.E.D. agree that it performs a valuable service for those who can go on to complete college. Successful GED holders include the actor Bill Cosby, Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell and Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner.
66. The purpose of the GED testing is to _________.
A. increase high school student s’ education
B. meet the needs of the college students
C. let every student enjoy free education
D. meet the needs of early high-school leavers
67. How many GED holders complete a year or more of college per year?
A. 38,500
B. 55,000
C. 350,000
D. 300,000
68. According to some critics, the GED testing _________.
A. will make it easier to complete high school
B. will not perform a valuable service for society
C. will make it easy for students to leave school earlier
D. should be immediately forbidden
69. The text takes Bill Cosby for example in order to show that _________.
A. GED holders can become an actor in the future
B. the GED testing can also play a certain active part
C. Bill Cosby strongly supports the GED testing
D. the GED testing should have some changes

Josh and I have been best friends for over a year. We hang out together almost every day. However, about a month ago, we had a big fight. That day I went to Josh’s house to watch a movie with him. But Josh said he wanted to go and watch his older sister’s performance at school. When I asked if I could come too, Josh said no. I felt hurt.
I asked why I couldn’t come, and Josh said, “I want to do something without you!”
I ran home feeling sad. When my mother saw me, she asked why I was blue. I told her everything. She said, “If you really get along with someone and have a good time when he’s around, you will want to spend all your free time with him. But spending every single day with someone can be boring. Sometimes you both need some time of your own.” Hearing what my mother said, I knew that there wasn’t anything wrong with our friendship. I also learned that Josh and I shouldn’t spend every single minute together.。
