1．To enable Ss to talk about past and present regrets．
2．To get Ss to use subjunctive correctly．
Teaching Procedures：
Step 1．Revision
Check the Vocabulary exercises on P92-93．If necessary，give Ss some instruction．
Step 2．Function
Purpose：To let Ss know how to talk about past and present regrets．
1．Talking about present regrets
(1)Give Ss several sentences which show Frankenstein’s regrets and ask some questions．
◆1 wish 1 was on the other side of the world．
◆1 wish I could disappear．
◆1 wish 1 was dead!
Questions：
①When Frankenstein says sentence I，is he on the other side of the world?
②When Frankenstein says sentence 2，can he disappear at that moment?
③When Frankenstein says sentence 3，is he dead?
Suggested Answers：
①When Frankenstein says sentence 1，he isn’t on the other side of the world．
②When Frankenstein says sentence 2。

he cannot disappear at that moment．
③When Frankenstein says sentence 3，he isn’t dead．
(2)Ask Ss to draw a conclusion about the use of“1 wish+(that)past tense”．
“1 wish+(that)past tense”talks about something that is unlikely to happen now．2．Talking about past regrets
(1)Read another two sentences and answer the following questions．
◆1 wish I had not created this creature．
◆1 wish I had not done this terrible thing．
Questions：
①When Frankenstein says sentence 1，did he create the creature?
②When Frankenstein says sentence 2，has he done the terrible thing?
Suggested Answers：
①When Frankenstein says sentence 1，he created the creature．
②When Frankenstein says sentence 2，he has done the terrible thing．
(2)Let Ss draw a conclusion about the use of“1 wish+(that)past perfect tense”．
“1 wish+(that)past perfect tense”talks about something that has happened but sb feels regretted now．
3．Consolidation
Show more sentences in order to let Ss understand how to talk about past and present regrets．
(1)1 wish 1 were a bird．
(2)1 wish I could fly．
(3)They wish they would travel in a spaceship．
(4)Her father wishes she were a boy．
(5)1 wish I had not gone to the party．
(6)He wishes he had known it．
(7)She wished her dog hadn’t been knocked down．
(8)My friend wishes she passed the exaln．
4．Summary
Guide Ss to summarize the use of the subjunctive．
For your reference：
(1)wish+(that)．．．(past tense)表示目前不可能实现的愿望
(2)wish+(that)…(past participle)表示过去不可能实现的愿望
(3)wish+(that)…(could／would do)表示将来不可能实现的愿望
