Zhou Youguang is often considered as the “father of Pinyin”. He created the writing system that turns Chinese characters into words using letters from the Roman alphabet. He died at the age of 111.
Mr. Zhou, who was born in 1906 during the Qing Dynasty, studied in China’s first Western-style
university, St. John’s in Shanghai, where he studied economics and
linguistics. As a young man, Mr. Zhou spent time in the US and worked as
a Wall Street banker and had several chats with Albert Einstein, according
to New York Times. He returned to China in 1949 and was given a task to
create a new writing system using the Roman alphabet to help increase
literacy.
Mr. Zhou spent three years developing the Pinyin system in the 1950s. It changed the way the language was taught and helped raise literacy rates(识字率). “We spent three years developing Pinyin. People made fun of us, joking that it had taken us a long time to deal with just 26 letters,”he told the BBC in 2012. He is the man who helped simplify Chinese.
Before Pinyin was developed, 85% of Chinese people could not read, now almost all can. It is also widely used to type Chinese characters on computers and smart phones. Now mobile phones and computers regularly u se it for Chinese text input. “In the e ra(时代) of mobile phones and globalization, we use Pinyin to communicate with the world. Pinyin is opening up the doors to the world,” Zhou told NPR.

If you want less stressful life, t ry laughing for no reason at all. That’s how thousands of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world-and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy.
The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. “Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day,” says Dr. Kataria. “Everyone’s naturally good at laughing-it’s the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives.” There are now more than 500 Lau ghter Clubs in India and over 1,300 worldwide. Many doctors are also interested in the effects of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%.
So, what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out.
I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest-I wasn’t interested in laughing with
a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha,” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can’t tell the difference between fake laughter and real laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects.
Surprisingly, it works! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real-and some people just coul dn’t stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed and comfortable I felt. So if you’re under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results!

41. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Fake laughter and real laughter are both good for health.
B. 40% of the people in Laughter Clubs are good friends.
C. Adults laugh more often than children in a day.

English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you no ticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter(灰质). This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles(肌肉).
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before
mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.
“Our findings su ggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.
