Unit 5 Canada -- “The True North”
—The First Period Reading (I) Teaching goals
1. Target language
a. important words and phrases

2. Ability goal
a. Learn how to describe the places that Li Daiyu and Liu Qian visit in Canada.
b. Enable the students to understand the details of the passage about Canada and find the correct answers to the questions I give.
c. Improve the students’ reading ability - guessing words, searching for information.
d. Learn the information about Canada.
Teaching important points
a. Find the answers to the questions in post-reading.
b. Learn to read the traveling report according to the traveling route.

Step 1 Lead-in and Warming Up
Show the students the maple flag and ask them some questions.
T: Do you know which country uses this national flag?
Ss: Canada.
T: Which continent is Canada in?
Ss: It is in North America.
T: How large is it?
Ss: Sorry, I don’t know.
Show them a picture with area.
T: Canada occupies an area of 9, 978, 4670 square kilometers. From coast to coast, it is 5,500km. It is a bit bigger than China but smaller than Russia.
Shows the students a map about Canada and it neighbors.
T: Which country is its neighbor?
Ss: The United States.
T: On its east is the?
Ss: The Atlantic Ocean.
T: what about the west?
Ss: it’s the The Pacific Ocean.
T: Do you know something about its fresh water?
Ss: It has a large amout of fresh water, about one third of the world’s supply of fresh water.
T: Great! But how can it supply so much water?
Ss: Because it has “Great Lakes.”
Show them a picture about “Great Lakes.”
T: Now could you please tell me what kinds of resources has?
Ss: Water, forests…
Show them a picture of resources of Canada.
T: It has so much resources we don’t know! How many other thing about Canada we don’t know? Now let’s come to the quiz in page 33. You can discuss with your deskmakes, one minute, go!
Students discuss their answers and then we check together with my PPT.
T: (go back to the title “Canada-The True North”) Do you know where is the word “The True North” from?
Show students the the national anthem of Canada and have them listened.
Step 2 Listening and finding
T: So it is from Canada’s national anthem. But what does it mean? You don’t know? OK, open your book, turn to page 34. After listening to the reading, you will tell me the answer and pick out the places they go and then draw out their travelling route on the map in page 33.
After listening, they have two minutes to finish it. The teacher will pick two students to answer the question and then show them the route with PPT. Step 3 Fast reading
Give them a few seconds to find out who, how, why, where of the trip and then check together. Step 4 Scanning
T: You have two minutes to fill in a blank about the places they go or their feeling in
the time order, I will pick some students to share their answer. (as picture 1)

T: Now I am sure you are clear about their route. I would like you to find some detail information about their trip, very simple, three minutes. (as picture 2) Students will answer them one by one. Step 5 More exercise.
Students do some true or false exercise and the whole class check the answer together quickly.
Suggested answer:
__T 1. They will take the train across Canada westward. __F 2. You can cross Canada in less than five days. __T 3. Vancouver is the coldest part in Canada. _T___ 4. It is so wet in Vancouver that the trees are tall. ___T_ 5. Canada is a large country with a small population.
__F__ 6. The ocean ships cannot go to Thunder Bay.
___T_ 7. Toronto is to the south of Thunder Bay.
_T___8. Their trip across the whole continent was exciting because of some great scenery.
_F___9. Their cousins took them and their baggage to catch “The True North”.
_T___10. Canada has more fresh water than any other country in the world.
Blank filling:
Students need to fill some key words of the passage in the blank, like:
