Michelle Bruce and her husband, Jeremy, both had cancers, and their son Holden had a brain tumor (肿
瘤). With three other children to take care of, the family move d to Michelle’s hometown of Franklin, Nebraska, six years ago
so her parents could give a hand.
Doctors had found Holden’s brain tumor when he was twelve. His family was living in a small town outside Lincoln, Nebrask a, but there were no pediatric (儿科
的) brain surgeons in the state. Holden had two surgeries at a dult clinics in Omaha. Both treatments were tough, and swelli ng left him in special care for about a week.
When Holden’s cancer returned in 2017, the Omaha clinic wa sn’t able to operate. But the Bruce family wouldn’t quit. They r eached out to Boston Children’s Hospital, which had better eq uipment and surgeons. After looking at Holden’s records, the doctor sent back her prognosis: She was confident she could remove the tumor for good. However, the surgery would cost $ 39,000-more than the parents could afford.
In a town of just 1,000 people, though, word traveled fast. Wit hin days, a local woman Michelle had never met in person call ed to say she was planning an event to raise money for Holde n. Michelle was touched.
The day of the fundraiser (筹
款) was freezing, but that didn’t prevent Franklin citizens show ing up. Michelle figured it had probably raised a couple thousa nd dollars. Back at her parents’ house, Michelle got a call fro m the fundraiser’s organizer. They’d made enough to cover th
e surgery. In all, the town raised $ 5,000—
enough to cover not jus Holden’s hospital bills, but for her and Jeremy’s trip to Boston with their son, which was far beyond her expectation.
Holden’s third surgery went more smoothly than the first two. “He had no swelling, no pain,” said Michelle. “It was really ama zing!”

3 mean?
A. Treatment.
B. Schedule.
C. Prediction.
D. Research.

A. The cold fundraiser’s day.
B. The amount of money raised.
C. The warm call from a stranger.

Air travel can be annoying. But research now suggests global warming could make it much worse. To get off the ground in r eally hot weather, planes may be forced to carry fewer passe ngers. That might mean a little more space, which would be g ood. However, it also would make the passengers pay more. Average air temperatures around the world are rising because people are polluting the air with increasing amounts of green house gases, which, such as carbon dioxide, are a byproduct (副产
品) of burning fuels. Those warmer temperatures can influenc e an airplane’s ability to fly because air molecules (分
子) spread out more as the air warms. This produces less lift under a plane’s wings, so a plane must be lighter to take off in hot weather than on cooler days.
It can even prove too dangerous for some planes to attempt a take-
off. A record of June heat wave in the American Southwest, fo
r instance, caused flight cancellations in Phoenix, Ariz. One ai rline’s planes were cleared to operate only up to 47.8° Celsius . On June 20, Phoenix reached 48.3°C!
Radley Horton is a climate scientist at Columbia University. T wo years ago, he and his graduate student Ethan David Coffe l studied the impact (影
响) of warming at four U.S. airports and found that warming of track could triple (使成三
倍) the number of days when planes face weight restrictions. Later, they explored the impact of rising temperatures on live t ypes of commercial planes flying out of 19 of the world’s busie st airports. In the coming decades, as many as one to three o ut of every 10 flights that take off during the hottest time of da y could face weight. That would be equal to taking a dozen pe ople off the plane, the researchers calculated.
28. How would global warming affect air travel according to th
e first paragraph?
A. It’ll add to the danger of flying.
B. It’ll increase passengers’ travel cost.
C. It’ll make flying much more comfortable.
D. It’ll encourage more people lo travel by plane.
29. What is the second paragraph actually intended to explain
?
A. How global warming is happening.
B. What decides a plane’s ability to fly.
C. Why global warming affects flying.
D. Where greenhouse gases are created.
30. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Reasons for flight cancellation.
B. The findings of a waking-related research.
C. The tendency of temperature change.
D. Effects of hot air on financial growth.
31. What should be the best title for the text?
A. Air Travel Isn’t Recommended during Hot Weather
C. Rising Temperatures May Reduce the Number of Flights
C. Weight Restrictions Are More Common in More Airports
D. Hotter Air May Lead to Planes Carrying Fewer Passengers D
People around the world are hungry to learn. Instructor Barba ra Oakley discovered this when her online course “Learning H ow to Learn” attracted over 1.5 million students.
Part of the goal of her course—
and her new book, Mindshift: Break Through Barriers to Learn
ing and Discover Your Hidden Potential—
is to expose some of the wrong views that get in the way of le arning, like the fact that we think we’re bad at math or too old to change careers. “People can often do more, change more, and learn more-often far more-
than they’ve ever dreamed possible.” Oakley writes.
Oakley thinks it important to keep learning. Throughout her ea rly schooling, she failed math and science classes and resiste d family pressure and pursued (追
求) a science degree. Today she’s a professor of engineering at Oakland University, after many different jobs in between. Besides being fun, Oakley explains, continued learning can s erve us well in the workforce. Mindshift tells the story of one D utch university employee who enriched her career thanks to h er love for online video games. Though she didn’t necessarily think of that as a “second skill”, it ended up doing much good t o her: She became community (社
区) manager of the university’s online courses, developing wa ys to keep digital communications civil just as she’d done in th e game world. This proves, Oakley writes, that we can never t ell where our expertise (专长) will lead us.
Whether you’re inspired to learn woodworking or web develop ment, Mindshift offers many tips that make your learning more
effective. For example, to absorb information, our brains nee d periods of extreme focus followed by periods of mind-wandering, Oakley explains. So, learners had better set aside time for rest and relaxation. In addition, to understand inform ation more deeply, Oakley recommends actively working on it by teaching ourselves aloud or creating mindmaps—web-
like drawings connecting different concepts and ideas, or quic kly going over the day’s lessons before going to sleep.
32. What should be the biggest barrier to our learning accordi ng to Barbara Oakley?
A. Our personal laziness.
B. Our learning disability.
C. Our passive thoughts.
D. Our low academic goals.
33. The story of one Dutch university employee is mentioned j ust to show .
A. learning comes in different forms
B. learning benefits us unexpectedly
C. learning is not difficult to practice
D. learning happens everywhere in life
34. What does Barbara Oakley think is the right way to learn?
A. Reading the concepts and ideas aloud daily.
B. Staying up to review our notes in a regular way.
C. Solving all problems without consulting others.
D. Walking out for a while after learning for an hour.
35. Which opinion may Barbara Oakley agree with?
A. Our potential i» hidden all around us.
B. Changing careers leads to bad results.
C. Learning is the only road to success.
D. Mankind has equal chance in learning.

Hi, everyone. Thank you all for gathering here in the hall. It’s t wenty to twelve now. I’ll try to finish my task as soon as possi ble so that it won’t delay your lunch break ten minutes later. I’m wondering if you all can hear me. Good, I’d like to tell you a bout some changes in our offices. Because our company is c oncerned about the environment, there are some changes as to how office waste will be handled. Starting from next Friday, containers will be placed throughout the office for recycling. Pl ease note that all red containers are for anything that is plasti c, while all green containers are meant for glass things. These containers will be emptied each Wednesday and their conten ts will be sent to a recycling factory. As you leave, please take one of the papers on the table at the back of the room. It sum marizes all of the information I’ve just given you. Remember, t he program doesn’t begin until next Friday. So that’s all from me. Thank you for your cooperation with this effort.
