第一部分阅读(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项
A
People in the Middle Ages did eat with their hands. Personal utensils (餐具) were mostly unheard of, especially forks. There were spoons to help serve, but only special guests would receive a knife from the host. Everyone else would be expected to bring their own. Of course, eating with one's hands can be quite a sticky situation, so towels were provided to help diners stay at least somewhat clean as they ate.
Still, dining was often a messy affair. At special occasions in the wealthiest households, women tended to dine alone, separate from the men. Women were expected to uphold a quality of grace. Eating greasy meat by hand would certainly not help! Once the men and women had finished their meals, they would come together to socialize.
Dietary scholars of the Middle Ages believed that the foods in a meal needed to be served and eaten in order of heaviness. The lightest and most easily digested foods, such as fruits and cheeses, were eaten first to help the digestive (消化) system get started. Once digestion was underway, greens and light meats, such as lettuce, cabbage and chicken, could be eaten. Last came the heavier vegetables and meats, such as carrots, beans, beef, pork, and mutton. This method was considered the most healthful way to eat.
The main and largest meal of the day was supper, and it was eaten at midday. Dinner was a light meal, and many of those in nobility (贵族) -the highest levels of the Middle Ages society-skipped breakfast altogether. Breakfast was considered unnecessary for those who did not perform physical work. Snacks and any other eating during the day were viewed the same way. Commoners, or the working class, were allowed to eat breakfast and small meals throughout the day.

We interviewed two people, one who went from the country to the city and one who did the opposite.
Janet Lincoln is a salesgirl who moved to St. Louisfive years ago. Here’s what Janet told us:
“Five years ago I used to live in a small town called Lemon Falls. I grew up and went to high school there. After I graduated I worked in a supermarket. Lemon Falls had a population of about 800 people, and I knew every single one of them. They all knew everything about me, too. You couldn’t do anything without everyone in town knowing about it. The first chance I got I moved to St. Louis and I love it. I don’t know as many people now as I used to, but that’s OK. I have a few good friends, and I see them when I want to. I kind of like beinganonymous. I’d never go back to Lemon Falls.”
Troy Henson had the opposite experience. He and his wife, Darla, and their two children moved from St. Louis to Bloomfield three years ago. Here’s what Troy told us:
“The best thing we ever did was get out of St. Louis. Don’t get me wrong; St. Louis is as good a place as any other city, I suppose — if you like cities, that is. We don’t. Both Darla and I grew up in St. Louis. We met at college and got married. Then the kids came along and life got difficult. We didn’t know any of our neighbors. We both had good jobs, but it always seemed like there was never enough money. That all changed when we moved to Bloomfield. I don’t make as much money as I used to, but then we don’t have as many expenses as we did. We know our neighbors. Life is good. We’d never leave Bloomfield.”
4. What troubled Janet when she was in Lemon Falls?
A. She had no friends.
B. There was no privacy.
C. There was a lot of competition.
D. She couldn’t find a well-paid job.

D. Unknown.
6. Different from Janet, Troy ________.

B. moved to a bigger city
C. grew up in a smaller town
D. knows little about his new neighbors
7. What is Troy’s opinion on living in Bloomfield?
A. It is a little boring.
B. It is quite comfortable.
C. It costs a lot of money.
D. It creates a safe environment.

The relationship between humans and the Amazon Rainforest has not always been a harmonious one. However, recent research suggests that the native peoples ofthe Putumayo region helped to protect the rainforest, leaving it unchanged for 5,000 years. Perhaps humans’ coexisting with nature is possible after all.
The study, published in PNAS, looked at soil samples in the Putumayo region of the Amazon in Peru to find how humans influenced the land. The researchers found that the trees still growing in the region today have been growing there for the last 5,000 years — evidence that the area has not been home to cities and farmland in that time. Traces of charcoal(木炭) found in the, soil, however, indicate that people did live there; they just did so in a way that had minimum influence on their environment.
To come to these conclusions the team dug a 0.6-0.9 meter deep column into the ground, taking samples of soilfrom different heights along the column. Back in the lab, samples were carbon- dated to determine their age and then sorted under a microscope to look for microscopic mineral particles, known as phytoliths (植硅体). Phytoliths are essential evidence of plants— they remained in the soil thousands of years after the plant died. So researchers can use them to tell which plants have grown in an area in the past.
Over 5,000 years’ worth of samples, no species loss was detected. These findings suggest that contrary to common belief, the Amazon is not untouched by humans, but rather has been protected by them for thousands of years. The management of the rainforest by native peoples appears to have been vital in preserving its biodiversity and will continue to be important in the fight to prevent it from acollapse.
As Nigel Pitman, a co-author on the paper, said: “Since this particular forest is still being protected by native peoples, I hope this study reminds us all how important it is to support their work.”
8. How did native peoples deal with the rainforest in the region of Putumayo?
A. They always destroyed the rainforest.
B. They had a side effect on the rainforest.
C. They never lived in the area of the forest.
D. They had been in harmony with the forest.
9. What did the researchers try to find in the Amazon forest in Peru?
A. The diversity of the plants in the rainforest.
B. The evidence of human influence on the forest.
C. The nutrition of the soil samples in the rainforest.
D. The survival age of growing trees in the rainforest.
10. What does the underlined word “collapse” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Sudden decrease.
B. Bad management.
C. Poor preservation.
D. Over development.
11. What can be inferred from Nigel Pitman's words?
A. Native peoples should protectthe rainforest.
B. We should help protect the Amazon Rainforest.
C. More science research should be done on rainforest.
D We should make good use of the Amazon Rainforest.
D
Scientists say baby sharks are at risk of being born smaller and without the energy they need to survive because of warming oceans from climate change.
Scientists studied epaulette sharks, which live off Australia and New Guinea. They found that warmer conditions sped up the sharks’ growing process. That meant the sharks were born earlier and very tired. The findings could be used in the study of other sharks, including those that give birth to live young.
The scientists studied 27 sharks. Some were raised in average summer water temperatures, about 27 degrees Celsius. Others were raised in higher temperatures around 29 degrees Celsius and 31 degrees Celsius. They found that the sharks raised in the warmest temperatures weighed much less than those raised in average temperatures. They also showed reduced energy levels.
Epaulette sharks can grow to a length of about one meter. Their name comes from large spots on their bodies that look like decorations on some military clothing.
One study this year found that worldwide numbers of oceanie sharks and rays dropped more than 70 percent between 1970 and 2018. Overfishing is a main concern, while climate change and pollution also threaten shark.
Carolyn Wheeler is a doctoral student at the University of Massachusetts Boston and with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University in Australia. She was the lead author of the epaulette
shark study. She said that while all the sharks survived, those raised in warmer temperatures were not strong enough to survive for long in the wild.
She added that if the sharks are born smaller than usual “they are probably going to have to start looking for food sooner—and they’re going to have less time to adjust to their surroundings.” The study should serve as a warning to ocean governing agencies that careful management is needed to prevent the loss of more sharks.
12. In what aspect do the warmer conditions affect the baby sharks?
A. Their food.
B. Their body weight.
C. Their living habits.
D. Their moving route.
13. How did the scientists carry out their study?
A. By studying former data.
B. By tracking sharks in the wild.
C. By collecting information about climate change.
D. By comparing sharks in waters of different temperatures
14. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. The origin of sharks’ names.
B. The sharks’ appearance.
C. The threats to sharks’ survival.
D. The sharks’ living environment.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Scientists Raise Sharks to Deal with Problems
B. Global Warming Has Reduced Shark Populations
C. Baby Sharks Struggle to Survive in Warming Oceans
D. Scientists Are Struggling to Save Sharks from Extinction

Overcoming Adversity
On the bus headed to the United States from Mexico, I experienced the saddest and longest ride I ever had. The thoughts of me not seeing my friends and family again were taking over my mind and causing a strong sense of depression. As I headed to a place I didn’t want to call home, minutes felt like hours and the hours felt like days.
“Welcome to the United States,” the driver said at the immigration checkpoint. The Officers repeatedly asked me for my passport, but I didn’t understand a single word coming out of their mouth. After we sorted out all the confusion we were on our way. With 3 hours left, a new thought took over my mind: stupidity. Not being able to understand a new language was the cause of my feeling. This filled me with a burning rage that I had never felt before.
Not understanding the new language I was introduced to was always a problem that I struggled with alone. In school, I felt like the problems were growing rapidly and I was losing control. The transition from being a straight-A student in Mexico to being a straight F student in the United States wasn’t easy and left me wondering if I could ever belong here. I was always known as the weird(怪的)Mexican in the classroom. Making friends was always hard because no one wanted to hang out with the weirdo(怪人)in the class.
I told myself that if I wanted to overcome my problem I had to practice it more. When it came to group assignments, I thought that it was the perfect moment to carry out my plan to hold a conversation with someone else. The moment arrived, I was nervous that it was my time to speak in the group. With a stutter(结巴), my first words came out of my mouth. “Hey my name is Jesus,” I said with a strong Mexican accent. Everyone in the group burst out laughing and the cause of their joy was my strong Mexican accent. This made me want to crawl up into a little ball and start crying in front of everyone.
