Max Horne,18,whose Chinese name is Hong Mingwei, is fluent in Chinese. He has visited China seven times since 2015. He has been to Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, HongKong,Chengdu, Kunming,Lijiang and Tibetan areas in southwestern China.

Last year,Horne won a national Mandarin(普通话) speech competition for high school students.Horne shared his story at the 13th Chinese Bridge Speech Contest for US high school students. Horne said that being able to speak Mandarin was the gift of a lifetime, and he decided to pass it on. So he started an after-school Chinese program at Riverdale. “I felt that the gift of China was given to by my Chinese teacher and all the other educators. So I really want to give that gift of understanding China and Chinese culture to other kids,” he said. “I teach some third, fourth and fifth
graders simple Chinese. I hope that they would be in interested in China and love China, too.”
Unlike many other US high school stud ents,Horne is something of a “Chinese local”. He knows how to shop on Taobao, sing Mandarin songs in Douyin, and listen to popular songs that are often used in square dancing in China.

As the world around them is changing, teenagers continue to need guidance and support from both parents. Studies show that teens who have an active relationship with their fathers are less likely (可能的)to involve themselves in dangerous behaviors and more likely to succeed in school and develop higher self-worth, because their fathers go beyond social expectations to devote attention to them.
Peer (同龄人) pressure has always been a big part of the teens’ experience. Even the best father can’t completely protect their kids from the growing influence of
their peer group. However, studies show that teenagers whose fathers focus on their lives are more likely to resist (抵抗) the more bad effects of peer pressure, taking drugs, for example.
Teens may not like to admit it, but they are watching their parents closely and often follow their example. An interesting finding explains just how important parents are, especially Dad. Swiss researchers discovered that if Dad attends church, even though Mom doesn’t, 44 percent of the kids are still more likely to keep going to church as adults. But if Mom goes regularly and Dad never shows up, only 2 percent of the kids continue to attend.
Teenagers face a lot of difficult choices, especially in their later teens. Fathers don’t get to make those choices for them, but they can be influenced. For example, teenagers can learn a lot fro m their parents’ concern on what to do when they finish high school. Should they go directly to college and, if so, where? Should they consider going to trade schools, joining the army or looking for a job?A father’s guidance brings a long-term perspective that teens often lack to these important decisions.
24. Teenagers without fathers’ focus are more likely to
A have higher self-worth
B. experience some dangerous things
C. become the best students in school
D. resist all bad effects of peer pressure
25. What does the third paragraph tell us?
A. More teenagers pay no attention to their parents.
B. Teenagers never attend church with their mothers.
C. Teenagers often treat their fathers as role models.
D. Fewer teenagers like to attend church wit h their fathers.
26. Which can replace the underlined word“perspective”in the last paragraph?
A. lots of concern
B. job
C. School
D. point of view
27. What can we learn from the text?
A. Teenagers are greatly influenced by their fathers.
B. Teenagers care less about what their parents do.
C. Mothers have no effect on their children’s life.
D. Fathers should make choices for teenagers directly.

Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur(创业者), who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13,her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids’teeth, instead of destroying them.
It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, “Why can’t I make a healthy candy that's go od for my teeth so that my parents can't say no to it?” With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain.
With her da d’s permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria.
Moore then used her savings to get her business of the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore's product—Cancandy.
As CanCandy’s success grows, so does Moore’s credibility as a young entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she’s also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.
Meanwhile, with her parents’ help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn’t driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles.

Imagine entering a very large building and you have no idea how to get to the office you are looking for. But then, as you’re standing there, a nearly silent balloon floats (飘) over to you and speaks to you. It asks you where you want to go. You tell it, and then it simply says “follow me” like a child’s game, and begins to float off in the direction of your destination. It keeps going, as you follow, leading you to where you want to go.
The guide works itself, without any help from any human being. It says hello to people as they arrive in the building, speaks to them, processes their requests and then guides them to the destination.
The balloon has two tiny fans to help keep it floating and to provide just a touch of lift. Onboard is a wireless (无线的) receiver for receiving directions from a
computer that directs the fans and sensors (传感器) that let it know where objects are around it.
The idea of such a simple robot is one that has been on the minds of scientists for years, and has been mentioned in novels many times. Today the iPhone does something similar but has to be connected to the Internet which is sometimes difficult. This is why this little balloon might be the wave of the future — because it is so much easier to follow!
32. The balloon is used to _____.
A. lead the way
B. bring people joy
C. catch the thief
D. welcome the visitors
33. The balloon gets to know its position with the help of _____.
A. sensors
B. two tiny fans
C. a wireless receiver
D. human beings
34. We can learn from the last paragraph that _____.
A. the idea of the balloon is new
B. the balloon is difficult to make
C. the balloon will replace the iPhone soon
D. the technology may become popular in the future
35. The text is most probably from a _____.
A. news report
B. newspaper ad
C. book review
D. science novel

For some people, the warmest memories from childhood come from being read a great story. 36 It develops children's language skills and increases their ability to succeed in school and, later, work.
A new report by the American Academy of Pediatrics says reading aloud is so important that parents should start as soon as their children are born and continue to read aloud even after their children can read by themselves. They say parents should also
point to and talk about pictures in books for infants(婴幼儿). 37
The company Scholastic is a major U.S. publisher of children's books. Every two years, Scholastic publishes a report on American reading attitudes and habits. The 2015 report says only 31 percent of children in the U.S. read a book for fun almost every day.
38 One is simply to have books in the home. Elizabeth Lyttleton, the mother
of three, is lucky. Her mother once wrote and illustrated children's books, so the family always have plenty to read. She says all her children learn from books—but
in different ways. 39 Researchers from the Scholastic company found that 80% of children surveyed—of all ages—say they love being read to. And children ages 6 to
11 whose parents do not read to them anymore say they miss it.
40 Of all the 6 to17-year-old in the Scholastic study, more than 90% said
their favorite books are the ones they chose for themselves.
A.The Scholastic report also suggests permitting children to choose their own books.
B. Scholastic also identifies some ways to develop a love of reading in a child.
C. A book does not have to be serious to be good for kids.
D. For young children, parents should ask questions about the book.
E. Do children still read for fun?
F. Another way to develop a reading habit in children is to read to them.
G. But reading to children does more than create warm memories

Dear Sir,
I’m Li Hua, a student from Guangming middle school. I’m writing to express my opinions about the shared bike.
Being convenient and environmentally friendly, shared bikes have already been popular throughout China. Convenience is also why people are in favor of it. Additionally, public bikes are almost free of charge while other forms, taxis, for example, are quite expensive. with more people ride bikes, the traffic problem in big cities will greatly be eased.
However, with its rapid development, it brings about many problems. The main concern is the random parking which frequently bothers others a lot and leads to the disorder of the city. Worst of all, some people even damage them or take them just as their own possessions.
In my opinion, it’s the lack of public awareness and related laws that results in such phenomena. To solve the problems, measures must be taken right away. On the one hand, the government should make some strict laws and rules to regulate the operation and management of the shared bikes. On the other hand, the public should raise their awareness of using the bikes correctly and gracefully.
I hope you will take my advice into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
