Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming lake behind his house.
In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out of the back door, leaving behind
his shoes, socks, and shirt as he went. He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator(鳄鱼) was swimming toward the shore.
His mother in the house was looking out of the window and saw the two as they got closer and closer. In extreme fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him.
From the dock(码头), the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched(夺取) his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war(拔河). The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate(感情强烈的). A farmer happened to drive by, took aim and shot the alligator.
After weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. The newspaper reporter asked if he would show him scars(伤疤). The boy lifted his legs, then with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, “But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mum wouldn’t let go.”

In Washington D.C., 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is a very special address. It is the address of the White House, the home of the president of the United States.
The White House used to be grey and was called the presidential Palace. It was built from 1792 to 1800. At this time, the city of Washington itself was being built. It was to be the nation’s new capital city. George Washington, the first president, and
Pierre Charles L'Enfant, a French engineer, chose the place for the new city. L'Enfant then planned the city. The president’s home was an important part o f the plan.
A competition was held to pick a design for the president’s home. An architect named James Hoban won. He designed a large three-story house of grey stone.
President Washington never lived in the Presidential Palace. The first president living there was John Adams, the second president of the United States, and his wife Mrs Adams did not really like her new house. In her letters, she often complained about the cold. Fifty fireplaces were not enough to keep the house warm!
In 1812 the United States and Britain went to war. In 1814 the British attacked Washington. They burned many buildings, including the Presidential Palace.
After the war James Hoban, the original architect, partially rebuilt the president’s home. To cover the marks of the fire, the building was painted white. Before long it became known as the White House.
The White House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States. Every year more than 1.5 million visitors go through the five rooms that are open to the public.

LONDON—Birds with bigger brains like crows and parrots survive better than their dimmer feathered friends, according to a study published on Wednesday.
Scientists have suspected that birds with large brains in relation to their body size lived longer because they were able to adapt their behavior to environmental
challenges.
Now they have provided evidence that it does.
“We have tested the hypothesis(假设) that the brain can buffer(缓冲) animals against the environment and help them to survive when they face environmental challenges,”said Daniel Sol of the Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications in Barcelona, Spain.
After comparing death rates, brain size and body mass of 236 species of birds from different regions of the world , Sol and scientists in Britain, Hungary and Canada discovered that the bigger the brain the better. Crows and parrots have the largest brains, while pheasants (野鸡) have a relatively small brain.
Earlier studies have shown there is a relationship between the size of the brain and an animal’s capacity to create new behavior and adapt more easily.
Studies of primates(灵长类) have produced similar findings.
“The idea is that if you have a big brain, you are more capable of adjusting behavior and responding to environmental changes. This can help you to survive,”said Sol, who reported the finding in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.
Tamas Szekely, of the University of Bath in England and a co-author of the report, said birds were ideal to test the hypothesis because they are the only species in which brain size and behavioral response to environmental challenges such as climate and habitat destruction is understood.
72. The finding of bird’s brains recently refers to _________.
A. the smaller brain the birds have the longer they live
B. the smaller brain the birds have the cleverer they are
C. the bigger brain the birds have the larger their bodies are
D. the bigger brain the birds have the abler they are to deal with environment
73. Scientists from ________ countries have made the discovery.
A. two
B. three
C. four
D. five
74. According to the text we can know that the report of the finding was written by _______.
A. Daniel Sol

C. Daniel Sol and Tamas Szekely
D. someone whose name was not mentioned
75. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Pheasants have the smallest brains of all birds.
B. Crows and parrots have the largest brains in all animals.
C. A pig’s brain is bigger than a cock, so it must be cleverer than the cock.
