Chapter1
Describing Your Ideal Career
Orlando: What kind of career do you want?
Andrea: I want to work in marketing. I think it would be an incredible experience working on international ad campaigns.
Orlando: Oh, then you have to be up to speed on different brands.
Andrea: Absolutely. I'm already aware of current and future trends but I would need to increase my knowledge of the media and branding.
Orlando: You really know what you want! Excellent.
Andrea: You've been a journalist for about five years, right? Why did you choose to be a journalist?
Orlando: Well, I've always had an affinity for analytical writing and current events. Plus, I'm interested in politics. Andrea: I see what you're saying. I always enjoy working on a team, especially when I get to use imagination to deliver messages using visual aids. So, we both matched our interests to our careers.
Orlando: Definitely! What about your career expectations?
Andrea: I would expect to be able to communicate creatively, and have the freedom to analyze markets. I also believe that a marketing job would provide great opportunities for my personal growth.
Orlando: I agree. Being a journalist broadens my horizons. That is one of the main reasons I chose this job.

Resume and Cover Letter
Andrea: Hello, Orlando. I'm working on my résumé and cover letter, but I'm not sure about how to organize them. Could you give me some advice?
Orlando: Sure. What job position are you applying for and how would you describe yourself professionally? Andrea: I'm applying for an advertising associate position. I would describe myself as an effective communicator, and I have insights into new trends.
Orlando: That's what you should say in the cover letter. The goal of the cover letter is to persuade employers to
look at your résumé. Make it short. Tell them the exact job position you are applying for, your past experience, skills and qualifications, and why you would be a competent candidate for the position.
Andrea: I see. What about the résumé?
Orlando: The résuméis what will get you an interview. I recommend it be about one page. Lay out the content clearly. Use education, work experience, skills and qualifications as headings to organize your résumé. The last thing is to sell yourself.
Andrea: So, I'm a brand?
Orlando: Yes. If you effectively present yourself as a brand, the employer will be interested to see you in person. Really emphasize your best qualities.
Andrea: Thank you so much!

These types of projects are appealing to me. I want to be part of a dynamic team within your company.
Mr. Johnson: I appreciate you speaking highly of our company. What qualities do you think are needed to work in our firm?
Andrea: Being creative would probably be the most important one. I think excellent visual and verbal communication skills are also essential. The abilities to analyze markets and predict trends are also important. I think it would be necessary to have a good awareness of the media and of branding in general.

Mr. Johnson: Andrea, the creative department is often very busy. Everyone is a team player, there are tight deadlines that must be met, and we like everyone to be productive at all times. Do you think you will be able to hit the ground running and adapt to the culture quickly?
Andrea: Definitely. In fact, I'm excited by the prospects of working within such a team.
Mr. Johnson: Can you give me an example of how you have previously adapted to a new situation in the workplace?
Andrea: Certainly. In my previous position, drastic changes in the fashion world were common. On one occasion, an entire range of clothing that was ready for the market was cancelled and replaced with another range. My colleagues and I kept our noses to the grindstone and redesigned and replaced the store displays over a single weekend.
Mr. Johnson: You were happy to work overtime on short notice?
Andrea: Absolutely.
Mr. Johnson: Now then, what would you do if you had a different opinion from your supervisor's?
Andrea: I would discuss the matter in private and respect their decision if they don't agree with me.
Mr. Johnson: And…umm, how do you handle criticism?
Andrea: As far as I am concerned, constructive criticism is always welcome.
Frequently Asked Interview Questions
Mr. Johnson: What will you do to overcome your lack of experience during the first few months of employment? Andrea: I understand that experience is very important. Therefore, I will seek out and take advice from an experienced mentor within the company —which is what I did as an intern. I will also ask questions when necessary to draw on the experience of my coworkers.
Mr. Johnson: OK. Do you feel under-qualified for the position?
Andrea: No, not particularly. As far as the job description is concerned, I feel my qualifications are relevant to what is required. However, if there are any shortcomings in my formal training, I am willing to upskill.
Mr. Johnson: We're approaching the end of the interview. Do you have any questions you would like to ask? Andrea: Yes, I have a question regarding the company's workplace culture. What do you believe is the one thing that makes employees proud to work for Innovative Inc.?
Mr. Johnson: That's a great question. In a word, I would have to say respect:
respect for the work we do, respect for the all staff members, and respect for our clients and customers. Andrea: Oh, now I'm even more excited by the possibility of working for your company.
Mr. Johnson: Thanks for coming in today, Andrea. I will contact you soon.
Thank you.
Andrea: Thank you, Mr. Johnson. It was a pleasure meeting with you.
