During ancient times, children didn’t have smartphones, iPad or computers to entertain themselves. Instead, they came up with interesting games to play.
★Stone balls
During the Qing Dynasty, kicking a stone ball around was a popular sport in the northern part of China, and it was often played in the winter to protect kids from the cold. Stones were carved into small balls and kicked along with feet. In 1999, the sport was included in the 6th National Ethnic Group Traditional Sports Meeting held in Beijing.
★Flying kites
Kites have quite a long history. The earliest kites were made of wood, instead of paper. Nowadays, the four most famous kites are the Beijing kite, Tianjin kite , Weifang kite and Nantong kite, of which each has distinctive features. The kite which resembles a swallow is a well-known Beijing style.
★Hide-and-seek
Hide-and-seek is a traditional game for children, popular around the nation. There are two ways to play: covering a child’s eyes while other kids run around to tease(戏弄) him or, more commonly, participants hide and one child must try to find them.
★Playing diabolos
A diabolo is always made of wood or bamboo and has empty space in the center. By juggling(边抛边接) the diabolo on the rope, the high-speed spinning diabolos will make a sound like a whistle. Ask a classroom of children to draw a scientist, and you’ll see plenty of color1 ed lab coats and glasses. The image (画像) hasn't changed much since the 1960s, but the person wearing the lab coat is changing.
A new analysis finds that more female scientists have appeared in kids? drawings in recent decades — going from nearly nonexistent in the 1960s to about a third in 2016.
The first of many “ draw-a-scientist ’’ studies asked nearly 5,000 children to draw a scientist between 1966 and 1977. Of those 5,000 drawings, only 28 drew female scientists. That was just 0.56 percent. Today, female scientists are being presented more in the media. For example, in a content analysis, 13 percent of people pictured in science feature stories of the 1960s were women or girls, compared with 44 percent in the 2000s. “That might really affect children’s idea on what a scientist should be like, ” says Miller, a Ph. D. candidate in psychology.
To look for changes in children'sperceptionover time, the researchers conducted a meta-analysis ,combining data from 78 studies that included a total of more than 20,000 children from kindergarten to the 12th grade. On average, 28 percent of children drew female scientists in studies conducted from 1965 to 2016.
What hasn’t changed much: kids pick up stereotypes (模式化观念)by gender (性别)as they grow up. At age 6, about 70 percent of the girls in the more recent studiesdrew female scientists. By age 16, 75 percent drew male scientists. This is an important period in which kids are learning stereotypes. It’s important that teachers and parents present diverse examples of both male and female scientists.
4. What’s the picture of scientists drawn by a 1960s, kid like?
A. A man with long curly hair.
B. A woman with lab glasses.
C. A woman in a formal lab suit.
D. A man in a color1 ed lab coat.
5. What may contribute to the changes in kids’ drawings?
A. The improvement of women^ social status.
B. The kids are affected by teachers and parents.
C. More female scientists appear in the media.
D. The increasing number of female scientists.
6. What does the underlined word “ perception” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Belief.
B. Idea.
C. Habit.
D. Growth.
7. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .
A. it's a stereotype that scientists are generally males
B. girls are more influenced by stereotypes than boys
C. some children are born with certain stereotypes
D. most children tend to prefer female scientists

A new study suggests drinking coffee as soon as someone wakes up from a poor night’s sleep greatly affects metabolism(新陈代谢) and blood sugar control.
In the study, published in theBritish Journal of Nutrition, UK researchers let 29 healthy men and women take part in three different overnight experiments. In the first two scenes, participants were given a sugary drink uponwaking—first from a normal night’s sleep, and then again after a poor night’s sleep during which they were woken up for five minutes every hour. In the third, their sleep was similarly disrupted, but they were given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink.
Blood samples from participants were taken following the sugary drink, which mirrored the calories of a typical breakfast, in each experiment. Results showed that one night of disrupted sleep did not worsen the participants’ blood sugar responses at breakfast when compared to a normal night of sleep. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast increased the blood sugar response by around 50 percent.
By drinking such kind of drink after breakfast, UK researchers found that our bodies’ ability to break down our food healthily is completely improved. Examining the effects of broken sleep and morning coffee across a range of different metabolic markers, scientists at the University of Bath found that, while one night of poor sleep had a limited effect on metabolism, drinking coffee before breakfast could have a negative effect on blood sugar control.
“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee—the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee is. This simple study is important and has far-reaching health influences, and it indeed moves some coffee drinkers’ heartstrings. As up to now we have had limited knowledge about what this is doing to our bodies, in particular for our metabolic and blood sugar control, so we have a long way to go.” said Professor James Betts, co-director of the Centre for Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism at the University of
Bath.
8. How did UK researchers get the result of the experiment?
A. By making comparisons.
B. By consulting journals.
C. By questionnaire.
D. By assumption.
9. What can we learn from the experiment?
A. One night of poor sleep surely affects blood sugar.
B. Drinking coffee after breakfast does harm to health.
C. Having strong drinks has a good effect on metabolism.
D. Drinking coffee at different time has different effects on health.
10. What does James Betts think of the study?
A. It makes no sense.
B. It remains to be continued.
C. It is limited and blind.
D. It is particular and explicit.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. How Much Coffee to Drink Matters
B. Does Coffee Really Wake Up an Appetite?
C. How Does Drinking Coffee Affect One’s Sleep?
D. Drinking Coffee before Breakfast Harms Metabolism
D
Everyone can be angry. But if you take the time to actually examine your anger instead of just “feeling” angry, you’ll have a better understanding of yourself. Knowing why you feel so angry can provide you with some surprising answers. These answers can enable you to suddenly grow spiritually and mentally.
I can give you a personal example. I went to a meeting once and I was verbally attacked over an application I supported at my workplace. Various people went on and on about how terrible this system was and that it never worked. That didn’t bother me that much. I was used to that but one of the comments that was said was, “Your job is pointless.” This really upset meand at the time, I was ly furious(发怒地) with that comment.
I was so angry and upset that they would treat me that way. Once I took the time to think about what was really making me so mad. I learned a lot. I realized that the comment was more truethan I wanted to admit. In the big scheme of things, my job was pointless. It wasn’t what I really wanted to be doing with my life and this was what frustrated me the most. Here I was pouring part of my heart and soul into a job I didn’t even really want to do. I was using it as a crutch(拐杖) because I didn’t have the confidence in myself to take the scary road towards
what I really wanted to do. As soon as I realized that, a lot of my anger just melted away. I also realized that I needed to start focusing on what I really wanted to do.
I now consider this incident as a great gift It got me back on track to moving in the direction I wanted to go with my life. I probably wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t taken the time to figure out why I was really so angry.
12. What made the author angry at the meeting?
A. The system of the company was terrible.
B. Someone said his job is insignificant.
C. The policy of the company didn’t work.
D. The application he supported was of no effect.
13. What brought down the anger of the author?
A. The apology someone made at the meeting.
B. The crutch he used to take the scary road.
C. His awareness of the fact that the comment was true.
D. The courage he had to overcome the challenges.
14. Why did the author consider the incident as a gift?
A. It brought him back on track to the goal.
B. It helped him get promoted to a higher position.
C. It helped him change his character since then.
D. It provided him with confidence in his career.
15. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. How to Cope with Verbal Attack in a Company
B. Avoid Being Pointless at Work
C. Anger Is Harmful to Health
D. Understanding Yourself Better Through Anger
