A new study suggests our teeth tell a lot more about us than just how often we brush. In fact, our teeth may record any experience that's made a meaningful influence in our lives.
According to the study, all of those events are - almost literally-written in stone, or, at least the hard material known as cementum that covers the root of each tooth. While it's considered a connective tissue(结缔组织), cementum is very bone-like and hardly the material one might expect to record life's experiences.
“Our results make clear that the skeleton is a dynamic organ,” study lead author Paola Cerrito of New York University says. “We weren't expecting these results.” Cementum is keeping our teeth in place, and it's considered a hard tissue. And yet, it also manages to be a recorder of our lives on this planet.
For the study, researchers looked at 47 sets of teeth from 16 people between the ages of 25 and 69. Those teeth came from a collection of skeletons of Central African Malawians. The remains were provided with detailed medical records and thoroughly documented personal histories.
Once the team connected the formation of each layer or band to certain life stages, they were able to trace certain life events to tooth formation. “I had an ‘aha moment’ when looking at the thin sections(切片) of the cementum under the microscope and thinking that I could try to match what I saw with the information about the certain life events of individuals,” Cerrito says.
In fact, the biological records were so detailed; they showed when an individual was imprisoned or suffered from serious illness.
“Just like tree rings, we can look at “tooth rings”: continuously growing layers of tissue on the tooth's root surface,” Cerrito explains.
“These rings are a faithful collection of an individual's physiological experiences and stressors.”
Researchers say it's all encoded in micro-structural changes(编码在微观结构变化中)to a certain layer. But so far, they haven't been able to understand the causes of those changes. One psychological event, like going through an ending of a marriage, might look a lot like catching a disease.
In any case, the dis covery could result in a star turn for a tissue that's long flown under the radar. “The discovery that personal details of a person's life are recorded in this little-studied tissue, promises to bring cementum straight into the center of many discussions c oncerning the evolution of human life history,” study co-author Timothy Bromage adds.
4. What can we learn about the study?
A. It examined the teeth of all ages.
B. Its goal was to improve human life
C. It was carried out in Central Africa.
D. Its findings surprised the researchers.
5. Why are tree rings mentioned in the text?
A. To give an explanation of tooth rings.
B. To show what we can learn from tree rings
C. To introduce how tree rings come into being.
D. To describe the connection between tooth rings and health.
6. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The future of the study.
B. The purpose of the study.
C. The limitation of the study.
D. The importance of the study.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Science or a way to detect people's secrets?
B. Teeth: A new way of looking at history
C. Brush your teeth, save your life?
D. Bones: They're actually alive!
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. D 7. B

C
Some of the world’s most significant problems never hit headlines. One example comes from agriculture. Food riots and hunger make news. But the trend lying behind these matters is rarely talked about. This is the decline in the growth in yields of some of the world’s major crops. A new study by the University of Minnesota and McGill University in Montreal looks at where, and how far, this decline is occurring.
The authors take a vast number of data points for the four most important crops: rice, wheat corn and soybeans. They find that on between 24% and 39% of all harvested areas, the improvement in yields that took place before the 1980s slowed down in the 1990s and 2000s.
There are two worrying features of the slowdown. One is that it has been particularly sharp in the world’s most populous countries, India and China. Their ability to feed themselves has been an important source of relative stability both within the countries and on world food markets. That self-sufficiency cannot be taken for granted if yields continue to slow down or reverse.
Second, yield growth has been lower in wheat and rice than in corn and soya beans. This is problematic because wheat and rice are more important as foods, accounting for around half of all calories consumed. Corn and soybeans are more important as feed grains. The authors note that “we have preferentially focused our c rop improvement efforts on feeding animals and cars rather than on crops that feed people and are the basis of food security in much of the world.”
The report qualifies the more optimistic findings of another new paper which suggests that the world will not have to dig up a lot more land for farming in order to feed 9 billion people in 2050, as the Food and Agriculture Organization has argued.
Instead, it says, thanks to slowing population growth, land currently ploughed up for crops might be able to revert to forest or wilderness. This could happen. The trouble is that the forecast assumes continued improvements in yields, which may not actually happen.
8. What does the author try to draw attention to?
A. Food riots and hunger in the world.
B. News headlines in the leading media.
C. The decline of the grain yield growth.
D. The food supply in populous countries.
9. Why does the author mention India and China in particular?
A. Their self-sufficiency is vital to the stability of world food markets.
B. Their food yields have begun to decrease sharply in recent years.
C. Their big populations are causing worldwide concerns.
D. Their food self-sufficiency has been taken for granted.
10. What does the new study by the two universities say about recent crop improvement efforts?
A. They fail to produce the same remarkable results as before the 1980s.
B. They contribute a lot to the improvement of human food production.
C. They play a major role in guaranteeing the food security of the world.
D. They focus more on the increase of animal feed than human food grains.
11. What does the Food and Agriculture Organization say about world food production in the coming decades?
A. The growing population will greatly increase the pressure on world food supplies.
B. The optimistic prediction about food production should be viewed with caution.
C. The slowdown of the growth in yields of major food crops will be reversed.
D. The world will be able to feed its population without increasing farmland.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. D

他们养活自己的能力一直是各国国内和世界粮食市场相对稳定的一个重要来源)”可推知,作者特别提到印度和中国是为了说明他们的自给自足对世界粮食市场的稳定至关重要。

故选A。

”)”可知,这两所大学的新研究认为,最近的作物改良工作更关注动物饲料的增加而不是人类粮食的增加。

故选D。

【11题详解】

根据倒数第二段“The report qualifies the more optimistic findings of another new paper which suggests that the world will not have to dig up a lot more land for farming in order to feed 9 billion people in 2050, as the Food and Agriculture Organization has argued.(该报告对另一篇新论文的更为乐观的发现进行了补充,该论文认为,到2050年,世界不必像粮农组织所主张的那样,为了养活90亿人口而开垦大量的耕地)”可推知,粮农组织认为,未来几十年,世界将能够在不增加耕地的情况下养活它的人口。

故选D。

“Father, do you see Mother in your dreams?” the young girl asks. “You know sometimes I do.” “Mother comes to see me a lot, you know. We sit and talk.” The father smiles. “How is your homework coming along?”
“Why do I have to study so hard?”
“It is what your mother would have wanted!”
She regrets speaking her mind. “I’m sorry, Father, I shouldn’t have said that.” She looks up and sees his eyes well up with tears.
“It’s okay, love,” he gets up and pours himself a drink. “I’ll just sit outside for a while. You finish up your work, okay?”
“I’m sorry, Father; Mother did love you very much. She told me all the time.”
“Homework, first, eh? Then we can chat about your mother.”
He heads off outside and sits in his usual chair, looking around the courtyard. The whole area relaxes the mind and somehow soothes the soul.
“All finished, Father. May I get a drink and sit with you? I have some questions.”
She comes with two drinks one for him and one for herself. He looks surprised. She never really liked him having a drink. Although he had cut back a lot from before he brought her here, it still seemed strange.
“Mother told me all about you. That is before she passed away. We would laugh together at your love stories.”
He listens without uttering a single sound.
“Why didn’t you come and take her away with you? She really wanted that. Did you know that?”
Her father looks at his daughter lovingly. “Circumstances were difficult back then. It was just the way things were. When it came time to…” He sighs. “To visit her it was too late.”
The girl smiles. “I hope I will have the same kind of love you and mother had.” “Without all the heartache,” her father adds.
“She always knew you loved her. She told me every day,” the child mentions cheerfully. “I saw her crying sometimes when she read your letters.”
“Did she make you promise to look after me?” She inquires. “She asked me to take care of you.”
“You promised her, didn’t you?” “Yes, I did.”
“It is nice out here, isn't it? Mother would have been very happy here.”
She talks with some authority. Her father remains silent. A smile comes to his weary brow. He nods his head.
“Mother wanted me to give you something. I think now the time is right.” She runs to her room.
Up on returning she hands her father a book. “It’s mother’s diary! She wanted me to give it to you.” He takes the book and holds it in his trembling hands, “Thank you.”
“Mother said you would understand things better.” “Wise woman, your mother.”
He places the book on the table as he gets up. The girl gets up and wraps herself around her father. “I love you.” she looks up at his face.
He picks her up and hugs her. “I love you, too.” His voice trembles. “It’s okay, Father. We have each other now and mother is in both of us.” He kisses her head.“Time you went to bed,” her father softly says.He puts her down and she scampers off to get washed and ready for bed. Clearing up everything he checks on his daughter. She is in bed waiting for her good night kiss. He tucks her in and bids her goodnight.
Just as he is to leave she tells him. “Mother told me she adopted me when I was a baby.” He stands at her bedroom door. Words fail him. Yes, he knew she was adopted.
“I am really lucky for being loved by my parents, even if I am not really theirs.” “You trying to bring on the water works?” he tells her.
She giggles, “Goodnight, Father. I love you.” “Love you, too.”
His face lights up as he wipes his dampened eyes.
The door closes and the child falls asleep dreaming of her mother.
Sitting outside he picks up the diary and opens it and reads the first line: “I love you, my dearest, if only things could have been different…”
