My daughter Kelly is a cautious person. She needs to warm u p to situations, and is hesitant to try new things. When with cl ose friends, she becomes a leader who laughs loudly and cha nts, “Girls rule, boys drool.” But when that comfort zone is not around her, she is shy and nervous.
This has been challenging for me at times. “Shy” is not a word that I think has ever been used to describe me. But this has b een a year of firsts for my girl that has filled her with a new se nse of confidence. This year she moved to lap lane in swimmi ng where she was preparing for a swim team. This year she l earned to ride a bike without training wheels. And this year sh e completed her first kids’ triathlon(三项全能).
On Saturday, with a thunderstorm coming soon and my son’s birthday party later in the day, we all went out in the dark of th e morning for Kelly to participate in her first triathlon. We pract iced transitions from swim to bike to run with her, we got all th e equipment she’d need, and we kept talking about the race. But as we waited the two hours for the older kids to finish befo re her turn, she held my leg a little harder and told me she lov ed me a few too many times. She was nervous but trying to k eep it together.
And then it was her turn. From the second she jumped into th
e water, my heart soared. My daughter transformed into the m ost confident human being I had ever seen. She dominated th at swim, crushed that bike ride and ran to the finish with the bi ggest smile on her face.
I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my entire life. It wasn’t because she did a sport or anything like t hat. It was because she was afraid of something and conquer ed that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn’t seen before. All day I would find myself just looking over at her and smiling. She might be wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I won th at day. I won the chance to see my girl shine.
Shine on, sweet baby.

An analysis of almost 50 years of competitions—
including Eurovision Song Contests and world skating champi onships—
has found that contestants are more likely to win if they are a mong the last to appear before the judges.
The study by an American university appears to provide scien tific proof that the best man, or woman, does not always win. I t found that, on average, the last competitor to appear in the E urovision Song Contest was more than twice as likely to win a s the one who went on first.
The first rounds of figure—
skating championships, for which the running order is selecte d at random, showed more dramatic results. The final skater h ad a 14 percent chance of victory, making him or her more th an four times as likely to win as the first skater.
The study showed a gradual worsening of chances for compe titors who appeared earlier in the running order. A contestant who appears first in a contest is two percent less likely to win t han one who appears second. A contestant who appears sec ond is two percent less likely to win than one who appears thir d, and so on.
The findings are published in the March issue of Acta Psychol ogica, a scientific journal. Robert Hardman, a senior lecturer i n psychology at London Metropolitan University who specializ es in the science of decision-
making, said that the results were interesting. He suggested t hat the effect was caused by the limitations of the human me mory.
“When people make comparison, they aren’t really able to ma ke a lot of fine-
grade discrimination. When contestants appear at the beginni ng of a contest, judges have little to compare them to and are perhaps cautious about the scores they give.” he said.“Later on, when judges are able to compare the contestants t o those that have gone before, they might give more extreme marks because they feel more confident about their judgment s.”
66. Robert Hardman’s words mainly tell about his ______.
A. explanation for the findings
B. own achievement in the research
C. suggestion to solve the problem
D. comments on the findings
67. The first skater in the first round of figure skating champio nships had a ______ percent chance of winning.
A. six
B. four
C. three
D. two
68. According to the study, the best competitor does not alwa ys win possibly because he/she ______.
A. fails to show his/her very best
B. is mistakenly put in the running order
C. meets with unfair judges
D. appears too early before the judges
69. What may be a problem with the judges according to the a rticle?
A. They believe the first is seldom the best.
B. They can’t remember things well enough.
C. They don’t really know what is good.
D. They show favor towards the contestants they like.
70. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. A contestant who appears last is sure to win.
B. Judges have a preference when giving scores.
C. The best way to come first is to go last.
D. Judges usually made no comparison in contests.

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

On my first job as a sports editor for the Montpelier Leader En terprise(MLE), I didn’t get a lot of fan mail, so many attention was caught by letter on my desk one morning.
When I opened it, I read:“Sweet piece of writing on the Tigers. Keep up the good work.” It was signed by Don Wolfe, the spo rts editor. Because I was a teenager, his words couldn’t have been more inspiring. I kept it in my drawer until it got old. Whe never I doubted I had the right stuff to be a writer, I would rere ad Don’s note and walk on air again.
Later, when I got to know him, I learned that Don made a habi t of writing a quick, encouraging note to people in all walks of l ife. “when I made others feel good about themselves,” he told me, “I feel good, too.”
Over the years, I’ve tried to copy Don and write uplifting word s, in a world too often cold and unresponsive, such notes brin
g warmth.
Why are positive note writers in such short supply? My guess is that people who shy away from the practice are too self-conscious. They are afraid they will be misunderstood. Thus, i t may cause troubles and problems. And it sounds insincere o n the phone. Also, writing takes time; it is far easier to pick up the phone.
The drawback of phone calls, of course, is that they do not las t. A note attaches more importance to our well-
wishing. It is a matter of record, and our words can be read m ore than once, savored and treasured, and they bring strength and love to us.
Today I sent a warm letter to my old boss. I don’t know if it will make his day, but it made mine. As my friend Don Wolfe said , “Making others feel good about themselves makes me feel g ood too.”
