Dear Santa Claus,
My name is Amy. I am 17 years old. I have a problem at school. Can you help me, Santa? Kids laugh at me because of the way I walk and run and talk. I have cerebral palsy. I just want one day when no one laughs at me or makes fun of me.
Love,
Amy At radio station WJLT in Fort Wayne, Indiana, letters poured in for the Christmas Wish Contest. When Amy’s letter arrived at the radio station, Manager Lee Tobin read it carefully. He thought it would be good for the people in Fort Wayne to hear about this special girl and her unusual wish. Mr. Tobin called up the local newspaper.
The next day, a picture of Amy and her letter to Santa made the front page of the “News Sentinel”. The story spread quickly. All across the country, newspapers and radio and television stations reported the story of the girl in Fort Wayne, Indiana, who asked for such a simple, yet remarkable, Christmas gift —just one day without teasing.
Suddenly the postman was a regular at the Hagadorn house. Envelopes of all sizes addressed to Amy arrived daily from children and adults all across the nation. They came filled with holiday greetings and words of encouragement. Some of the writers had disabilities; some had been teased as children. Each writer had a special message for Amy. Through the cards and letters from strangers, Amy saw a world full of people who truly cared about each other.
Many people thanked Amy for being brave enough to speak up. Others encouraged her to ignore teasing and to carry her head high.
Amy did get her wish of a special day without teasing at South Wayne High School. Teachers and students talked together about how bad teasing can make others feel.
That year, the Fort Wayne mayor officially proclaimed December 21st as Amy Jo Hagadorn Day throughout the city. The mayor explained that by daring to make such a simple wish, Amy taught a universal lesson. “Everyone,” he said, “wants to and should be treated with respect, dignity and warmth.”

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, vastly different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority(优先)it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling.
If spelling becomes the only important point of his teacher’s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That’s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability. With its help, students will be more confident when they write.
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: “This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centered on the child’s ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation to seek improvement.

B. Teachers ignore spelling teaching in class.
C. Schools think it unimportant.
D. All the schools he taught in think it important.

62. Teachers encourage the students to use dictionaries so that _________________.
A. students will be able to write more freely
B. students will be more skillful in writing
C. students will be more confident in writing
D. students will be independent enough
63. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. How to encourage students to write.
B. How to develop writing skills.
C. How to teach spelling.
D. How to balance spelling and content of writing.

It would be pleasant to believe that all young girls in the past got married for romantic reasons; but the fact is that many of them regarded marriage as their only chance to gain independence from their parents, to have a provider, or to be assured of a good place in society. A couple of generations ago, an old maid of twenty-five did not have much to look forward to. She was more or less fated to remain with her parents or to live in some relative’s home where she would help with the chores and the children. Not so any more. In the first place, women remain young much longer than they used to, and an unmarried woman of twenty-eight or thirty does not feel that her life is over. Besides, since she’s probably working and supporting herself, she is free to marry only when and if she chooses. As a result today’s women tend to marry later in life. They have fewer children—or none at all—if they prefer to devote themselves to their professions. The result is a decline in the birthrate.
The new role that women have developed for themselves has changed family life. Children are raised differently; they spend more time with adults who are not their parents: baby-sitters, day-care center personnel, relatives, or neighbors. Whether they gain or lose in the process is a hotly debated question. Some child experts believe that young children must spend all their time with their mother if they are to grow sound in body and mind. Others think that children get more from a mother who spends with them “quality time “(a time of fun and relaxation set a side for them) rather than hours of forced and unhappy baby-sitting. And many child psychologists point out that children kept in day-care centers every day are brighter than those raised at home. No matter what it is, one thing about child raising to be certain of is that the longer the child is with the mother, the better.
68. Which of the following is the reason for young girls’ marriage in the past?
A. Marriage was one of the chances to get freedom.
B. They could find happiness through marriage.
C. They preferred to devote themselves to housework.
D. They wanted to find a good place in society.
69. We can conclude from the passage a decrease in the birthrate is because _______.
A. a good many women still depend on their parents
B. raising children is a great burden for many families
C. many women would like to remain young forever
D. more and more women are concentrating on their careers
70. The underlined word “sound” means ________.
A. bright
B. healthy
C. tall
D. strong
71. Which of the following is being discussed in the passage?
A. How long children should stay with their parents?
B. Where children should be raised?
C. Whether children should stay with their parents?
D. How children should be raised?

Now that you’re returning from celebrating the Chinese New Year, why not rest a little bit by checking your career?
If that doesn’t satisfy you, we have this 10-point career plan you might want to try. Point one is really easy:
1. Get a piece of paper and a pen. Now you’re ready for th e other nine points.
2. Make a list of at least three achievements that took your career forward in 2006.
3. Make sure and write down what (if anything) is holding your career back or stopping further
progress.
4. Make a list of what your career must provide as a minimum in terms of both job and the way
of life (money, status and power are all factors that you may want to consider.)
5. Make sure and write down what you would really like from your career—again both in terms
of job and the way of life.
6. Review what you have written. Are you winning? Is what you see in this mirror something
you are proud of? If so, read no further. The last thing you want to do is waste time looking for a new job because you have a great one already. If not, come to the next point.
7. Find your biography and read it through. How up to date is it? Is it a great advertisement for
you and the skills you have?
8. Set yourself aims for your next job. Again including both basic and hopeful goals.
9. Decide on our job-hunting method. How are you going to network? Where are you going to
look for help-wanted ads?
10. Make a summary of your skills and achievements and write a new biography.
One thing to remember is that job hunting can be a lonely task.
So at an early stage find someone you can talk to and with whom you can share the ups and downs of the whole job-hunting story.
Unfortunately, new jobs do not just land in your hand. It takes great efforts. Make time for the task at hand and stick to it.
Who knows? By the next spring festival you might not have to deal with these 10 points again.
72. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The writer mainly advises you to change your job.
B. The writer is to teach you how to get a new job.
C. The writer wishes you to remember the ten points.
D. The writer offers some advice about a better career.
73. Which of the following statements is not included in the plan?
A. Get a piece of paper and a pen.
B. Try job-hunting method.
C. Make a list of your maximum expectations.
D. Write down the frustrations(沮丧) in your career.
74. If you are not satisfied with your present job, what should you do next?
A. Make a goal for next job.
B. Find your biography.
C. Look for job-hunting ads.
D. Rest and relax a little bit.
75. We may infer from the passage that ________.
A. we must have a clear picture to find a new job
B. hunting a new job is always full of excitement
C. it’s unnecessary to share your experiences with friends
D. we will easily get a job following the 10 points
