The project described is metro line tunnels in Chengdu city, southwest China. There are 7 metro lines in planning communication network, 274.15 km length overall.

Chengdu city is situated on a basin, resulted from Eurasian Plate impact, surrounded by mountains. The geological feature of Chengdu area is the alluvial depositions composed with eight alluvial fans. Very deep loose sediment, sandstone and mudstone of Jurassic System and cretaceous were distributed abroad. With different surface water flow seasons, deposits of different sizes can be found, ranging from pebbles to silt.

Pebble-Sand Matrix
Pebble size is usually up to 80 mm. However, there is possibility of having pebbles of large sizes. Pebbles of up to 500 mm have been seen in building foundations. The large size pebbles are usually granitic rocks with uniaxial compressive strength of up to 200 MPa when it is fresh.

The cutterhead of both EPB and slurry shields are basically a mixed cutterhead, combining roller cutters (for hard rocks) and teeth (for soils).
The cutterhead has relative large opening (up to 40 cm diameter) for the pebbles.
