英语暑假作业(五)
第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
A
“I can’t live without books,” Thomas Jefferson wrote to his friend and fellow former President John Adams。
That letter and others that Jefferson wrote about his personal library——-the foundation of today’s Library of Congress about 200 years ago—--went on display last year. The exhibition was free and was in the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building。
The exhibit ion of Jefferson’s rarely seen letters, “Out of the Ashes: A new Library for Congress and the Nation," celebrated the sale of his books to Congress 200 years ago. The Library of Congress is America’s oldest federal cultural institution and the world’s larg est library。
“Ashes?" you might ask.
British forces set fire to the unfinished U.S。
Capitol Building and much else of official Washington on Aug。
24,1814,during the War of 1812. The Congressional library, begun in 1800, was housed in the Capitol's north wing, and was destroyed.
To re—establish the library, former President Jefferson offered to sell his personal collection of books。
Congress bought Jefferson’s 6,487 volumes for $23,950 in 1815, the library noted。
Of those, only about 2,000 remain after another fire that started in a Capitol Building chimney on Christmas Eve of 1851 spread through the
Congressional library. Those original 2,000 surviving books, plus replacement copies acquired through a special search, now make up Thomas Jefferson’s Libra ry.
Jefferson arranged his books in his library at Monticello according to history, philosophy, and the arts。
He used the most advanced conservation techniques of his time. “I preserve these books by wrapping and sewing them up in oil cloth, so that neither air nor moisture(湿气)can have access to them,” Jefferson wrote in 1796.
As a tribute (致敬) to Jefferson and his lifelong passion for books,“I cannot live without books” was the theme of last year’s Library of Congress National Book Festival, held at the Walter E。
Washington Convention Center.

After studying over 500 millionaires, including Andrew Carnegie,Henry Ford, and Charles Schwab, journalist and author Napoleon Hill found that they shared a single quality:decisiveness。
“Analysis of several hundred people who had gained fortunes well beyond the million dollar mark confirmed the fact that every one of them had the habit of reaching decisions quickly,” Hill wrote in his 1937 classic Think and Grow Rich.
Besides making decisions quickly and confidently, they also changed decisions,if and when need be,slowly, Hill noted。
On the contrary,“People who failed to accumulate money, without exception, had the habit of coming to decisions,if at all, very slowly, and of changing these decisions quickly and often。
”
Decisiveness plays such an important role in accumulating wealth that
overcoming delaying is the seventh of his 13 steps toward getting rich.
To become a better decision—maker, start by focusing on your listening skills。
Hill explained: Keep your eyes and ears wide open-—-and your mouth closed—-—if you wish to acquire the habit of quick decisions. Those who talk too much do little else。
If you talk more than you listen, you not only keep yourself away from many opportunities to gain useful knowledge, but you also show your plans and purposes to people who will take great delight in defeating you, because they envy you.
Your actions count more than your words。
“Tell the world what you intend to do, but first show it,” Hill wrote。
If you do master this quality, you can get huge rewards。
Hill observed, “Those who reach decisions quickly and definitely know what they want, generally get it… The world has the habit of making room for the man whose words and actions show that he knows where he is going。

Everyone loves a hard worker. In fact, pulling long hours on the job and earning big is considered by many to be the modern mark of success. Being labeled a workaholic is, as often as not, seen as a badge of honor。
But for some, the obsessive need to work comes at the expense of everything else。
Health, relationship and even work quality can suffer. It’s a high price to pay.
Whatever the case, a strong desire to work has been leading people to therapists (治疗师)and self—help groups for years. It can even be deadly. Earlier this month, a Japanese government study found one fifth of the Japanese workforce is at risk of death from overwork.
Overwork isn’t just a problem in Japan。
Workaholics Anonymous, a 12—step program which models itself on Alcoholics Anonymous, held its first international conference in the UK in June, with attendees coming from across the globe. There has been little research into why workaholism develops. But that’s changing--—in recent years, the phenomenon has begun to get more attention and is being treated as more than just a buzzword。
Workaholism is not recognized as a medical condition by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Disorders, which is considered the gold standard in diagnosing mental disorders. But even without a precise definition, its impact is being linked to health, workplace and mental issues, and researchers are taking note。
A recent analysis by the University of Georgia showed, among other things, that workaholics are less productive than colleagues with a healthier attitude and approach to work。
Another large—scale study, published in May by the University of
Bergen in Norway, linked workaholic tendencies to other psychiatric issues, like obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety and depression。
But when does hard work turn negative? What might lead someone to believe they are a “work addict”?Well, workaholism is a compulsion-——an obsessive and out—of-control urge to work, or think about it, says Bryan Robinson,a researcher based in North Carolina who conducted early research into the effects of work addiction and wrote Chained to the Desk,a guidebook for workaholics.
33。
