Shanghai is taking the lead in garbage sorting
15-August-2019 By Li Dong
1. Which is the right bin?
Starting July 1st this year, people in
Shanghai are required by law to sort garbage
into four different categories (recyclable
waste, household waste, hazardous waste
and residual waste), or they could face fines
up to 200 yuan.
These days, Shanghai's most heated
topic is "Which is the right bin for my
garbage?", as some people are not clear
about how to sort their household (家庭的)
garbage yet.
2.How much household waste was generated
in Shanghai?
In 2018, the total volume(总量) of
household garbage in Shanghai hit 9 million
tons, which means Shanghai households
produced nearly 26,000 tons of garbage a day --
enough to build the city's 420-meter-high
Jinmao Tower every two weeks.
3. What do people say about garbage sorting?
The biggest challenge about garbage sorting is
getting people to develop the habit and fully take
part in it. According to our survey, among 13,000
interviewees, over 90 percent agreed that garbage
sorting is very important for the environment. But
only 30 percent said they were doing “very well”
or “relatively well”.
Shanghai is taking the lead in garbage sorting
and has set an example for other cities to follow. In
a few years’ time, garbage sorting will cover all the
cities in China.
81. Which kind of waste does scrap metal belong to?
________________________________________________________
82. What could happen if people in Shanghai fail to sort their garbage?
