Today I want to show you a English sci-fi horror movie : triangle. This movie is at 191 of Douban top 250. Although it is a horror movie, it explores sin and punishment through a unique time loop-style plot. Its plot is extremely complicated and very brain-burning. That’s mean if I want to explain the plot clearly, I need almost twenty minutes and the time will be out so today I’ll tell you something about its Metaphors and details.
At the beginning ,let me introduce the leading role briefly. Jess
And then it’s some interesting metaphors.
The first point: the story of the movie is similar with the story of Sisyphus. Sisyphus was a tyrant, he was given 3 days leave to go back to the world and buried his dead body after he died. But when he was in man’s world. He found himself love the world so much, he didn’t want to leave away any more, so he broke his promise. But he still couldn’t get rid of his predestination(宿命). He was caught back to the hell and punished to pull a big stone from the foot of the mountain to the top. But every time when he push the stone to the top he had to see the stone roll down from it so he has to carry it to the top again and again without stop. so why we say they are
similar. Let’s see some movie clips. Please pay attention and I will ask you some easy questions.
Sisyphus was the son of Aeolus. Did you notice Aeolus? Yes, it’s on the ship. It expose the connection between the film and the story. And now let’s see another related clip. Pay attention.
Do you understand? Jess just like the Sisyphus. She gave a promise to the death that she will come back but she wanted to save her son and broke her promise. so she was punished to cycle the experience again and again.
Actually all the experience is her fantasy. There are many details to imply this point. Now let’s see this. Did you notice? The pattern on the drum head of the car accident scene is the same as the pattern on the drum head in the oil ship. In the ship, other people’s time is eleven thirty but Jess’s time is the same as the ship, that means Jess has died in the car crash so her and the ship’s time stands still while others are normal. When Jess stood in the cabin herself, the food she saw is all rotten. And the house number of her house is the same number of the cabin she entered. These things are all imply that the experience is just her imagination or more precisely the experience of her soul.
As the deep meaning is related to an old English poetry: Rime of the Ancient Mariner(老水手之歌) written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This poetry tells a story that a mariner shot an albatross and brought bad luck. The wind dies and the time stopped. The crew are unbearable hunger and thirst. After a "weary time", the ship encounters a ghostly hulk. On board are Death (a skeleton) and the "Night-mare Life-in-Death", a deathly pale woman, who are playing dice for the souls of the crew. With a roll of the dice, Death wins the lives of the crew members and Life-in-Death the life of the mariner, a prize she considers more valuable.One by one, all of the crew members die, but the mariner lives on, seeing for seven days and nights the curse in the eyes of the crew's corpses, whose last expressions remain upon their faces.Eventually, the mariner manages to pray, the albatross falls from his neck and he was sent home by god. In the movie, the necklace with her son’s photo around her neck just like the dead albatross around the old mariner hinting her son just likes the albatross, hurted by his mom’s selfishness and rude, eventually died from a car accident caused by his mom. So the mom could only wear the necklace of sin, living in repentance.
In the final analysis, this movie reflects a view of life and death. There are many scenes in which others persuade Jess to Put down the obsession.
We all will face death one day. We shouldn’t be too sad or regret for things we did before. We come from nature and will return to nature. So each of us may cherish the person in front of you and live An optimistic life.
