how america lives翻译

Unit 6 How America Lives

Unit 6How America LivesConsolidation ActivitiesI. Text Comprehension1. Which of the following is NOT a major aspect of the American life discussed by the author?A. Agriculture and transportation.B. Marriage and women's social status.C. Social welfare and education.D. Family value and housing.Key: [ A ]2. Judge, according to the text, whether the following statements are true or false.1). Young people still get married, but the divorce rate is higher than the remarriage rate because many don't want to raise children. [ F ]2). The author welcomes the freer patterns of today's courtship and marriage because many young kids of his time suffered bitterly. [ T ]3). Today still very few women in universities are going up to the athletic programs and demanding a just share of the physical education budget. [ F ]4). American public schools today are inferior to those decades ago. [ T ]5). Builders seem not willing to erect small homes for young married couples because it is not very profitable. [ T ]II. Writing StrategiesThis text is an essay of exposition, for it presents solid facts and major problems about American social life, though the writer inserts his own ideas at times. The whole article is clearly organized, concentrating on the major changes and problems in current American society. The paragraphs are developed by the deductive method. Each paragraph contains a topic sentence, which is proved, explained, or illustrated. For example, each of the first three paragraphs begins with a topic sentence. Can you point out the topic sentences of paragraphs 4-8?It is easy to see that each paragraph starts with a topic sentence:Paragraph 4: "American women are changing the rules."Paragraph 5: "America is worried about its schools."Paragraph 6: "Some Americans must live on welfare."Paragraph 7: "America cannot find housing for its young families."Paragraph 8: "Our prospects are still good."In order to impressively illustrate, prove, or support the topic statements, the author employs various writing strategies, such as comparison and contrast that are used to show the similarities and differences concerning the issues under discussion. For instance, the beginning paragraph contains five sentences that tell us the relevant similarities and differences by means of comparison and contrast. Can you pick out some sentences in other paragraphs that show a relevant contrast? In Paragraph 2: "The 1980 election, especially for the Senate and House of Representatives, signaled a decided turn to the right insofar as political and social attitudes were concerned. It is as if our country spent the 1960s and 1970s jealously breaking out of old restraints and now wishes to put the brakes on, as cautious people often do after a binge."In Paragraph 4: "Thirty years ago I could not have imagined a group of women employees suing a major corporation for millions of dollars of salary which, they alleged, had been denied them because they had been discriminated against. Nor could I imagine women in universities going up to the men who ran the athletic programs and demanding a just share of the physical education budget. But they are doing this —and with the support of many men who recognize the justice of their claims."In Paragraph 5: "If I had a child today, I would send her or him to a private school for the sake of safety, for the discipline that would be enforced and for the rigorous academic requirements. But I would doubt that the child would get any better education that I did in my good public school. The problem is that good public schools are becoming pitifully rare, and I would not want to take the chance that the one I sent my children to was inadequate."In Paragraph 6: "In the bad old days she might have known destitution, but with family assistance she was able to hold her children together and produced three fine, tax-paying citizens." (This sentence implies a contrast: it is not the case nowadays.) In Paragraph 9: "I think of America as having the oldest form of government on earth, because since we started our present democracy in 1789, every other nation has suffered either parliamentary change or revolutionary change."As can be seen in the text, the tone is mainly objective, and it is definite and resolute when the writer expresses obligations as well as his attitudes or opinions. For example, inParagraph 6, we find two sentences: "Some Americans must live on welfare." and "…some kind of social welfare assistance must be doled out to those who cannot find jobs." These two sentences resolutely express the moral obligation to those Americans who cannot find jobs and make the writer's attitude absolutely clear. Now list some other examples in the text to show that the tone is definite or resolute when the writer expresses obligations and his attitudes or opinions. The following examples show the definite or resolute tone of the writer. In Paragraph 1: "In a time of rapid change it is essential that we remember how much of the old we cling to."In Paragraph 2: "We should expect to see a reaffirmation of traditional family values, sharp restraints on pornography, a return to religion and a rejection of certain kinds of social legislation. "In Paragraph 3: "Without reservation, I applaud the freer patterns of today, although I believe that it's been difficult for some families to handle the changes."In Paragraph 5: "The problem is that good public schools are becoming pitifully rare, and I would not want to take the chance that the one I sent my children to was inadequate."In Paragraph 7: "America cannot find housing for its young families. I consider this the most serious danger confronting family life in America, and I am appalled that the condition has been allowed to develop?

1. How are you doing? How are you doing?" 或是 "How are you?" 不然 "How's going?" What's up? 什么事?"What's up?" Kun-Lin!" Bob. What's up?" What's up?" 那别人也不说 "Not much", 反而反问一句, "What's up?" 所以 "What's up?" 的味道在里面了."What's up?" 总之 "What's up?" 这是从 "How's it?" 3. Could you do me a favor? 或是 "Could you give me a hand?" Could you do me a little favor? (注意一下这里用 could you 会比 can you 来的客气一点.)另外, "Can you help me?" (其实正常来说, 应该是他们主动会问 "Can I help you?" 或是 "May I help you?" 才对, 但有时实在等不急了, 就直接先问了 "Can you help me?"4. What are you studying? 通常老美一听我是学生, 都会很自然地问, "What are you studying?" 其实这样的问法就是问你"What's your major?" 但他们比较喜欢说 "What are you studying?" 如果说你遇见一个人, 你也不确定他是不是学生, 我们通常会问, "What do you do for living?" 或是简单地问, "What do you do?" 一般不会说成 "What's your job?5. Where are you going? 所以你也可以问 "Where are you heading?" 6. What's your favorite ice cream? Who's your favorite movie star?" Favorite 这个字很好用, 如果这句话你不用 favorite 的话, 就会变成 "What kind of ice cream do you like the most?" 那就是 "Vanilla is my favorite flavor and chocolate is my second favorite.7. What color is your car? What's the color of your car? 同样的句子我就曾说过, "What kind of color does your car have?" 他们就是 "What color is your car?" 让我们再来练习几句, "What year is your car?" "What area do you live?" 同样的 How 后接一个形容词也很常用, 例如 "How big is your dog?" What's going on? "Hey, What's going on?" 或是 "What's up with that?" 但是老美还是比较比喜欢说"What's going on?" , 又比如人家问你说, "Why is our oven broken?" "I don't know what's going on." How come? "How come?" 相当于, "Why do you ask that?" 也就是说 "It's none of your business! "虽然 how come 跟 why 的用法上差不多, 但二者的问法不同, 例如上句, "Why is our oven broken?" 换成 how come 的话, 要说成, "How come our oven is broken?" 10. You want to go to see a movie? 其实正确的说法应该是, "Do you want to go to see a movie?" 但可能是太冗长了点, 所以老美才会直接说 "You want to go to see a movie?"另外, 更口语的说法应该是 "You wanna go to see a movie?" 所以这句话也可以讲成 "Are you gonna see a movie?"11. Anybody needs a fork? 或是 "Any luck today?"

Text Introduction | Culture Notes | Author | Structure balanced system of government (Paragraph 8) The concept refers to the three branches of the United States government — the legislative, the executive, and the judicial — that restrain and stabilize one another through their separated functions. The legislative branch, represented by the Congress, must pass bills before they can become law. The executive branch — namely, the president — can veto bills passed by the Congress, thus preventing them from becoming law. In turn, by a two-thirds vote, the Congress can override the president's veto. The Supreme Court may invalidate acts of the Congress by declaring them contrary to the Constitution of the United States, but the Congress can change the Constitution through the amendment process.

How China lives(中国的演变 大学生英语作文原创)

How China lives030117423 许沁园Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the productivity has developed rapidly and people's consumption needs have become increasingly diversified. All aspects of social life have undergone tremendous changes. I would like to briefly talk about the changes in China from the perspectives of people's clothing, food and housing. In clothing, people still retained the color of the republic of China and the color of revolution when new China was founded. There were also big differences between rural and urban areas. In cities, qipao and MAO suits became popular during the republic of China period. In the countryside, the cloth of clothes were mostly coarse cotton and linen, and the color were also relatively monotonous. Today, people are no longer satisfied with simple clothing designs and colors. On the basis of quality, people begin to pursue personalized clothing needs. Clothing also begin to have a variety of collocation style. On different occasions, there will be different types of clothing .Behind the changes of clothing is the liberation and development of social productive forces. The change of clothing also shows the continuous improvement of people's quality of life in the past 70 years. The change of food culture can also reflect the change of social life. At the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the food was mainly plain and simple in the 70 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China. Agricultural production had been greatly hit, and vegetable production was reduced on a large scale. Malnutrition was widespread. But now, the variety of food began to enrich, quality began to improve. Chinese people's scientific and health concept has made great progress, people begin to pay attention to eat more vegetables and fruits. Opening up to the outside world makes a variety of foreign food begin to enter the country. People's nutrition problems have been solved. At this time, people's attention to food issues began to shift towards variety, nutrition and taste.Lastly, choices of housing is a big change in china. In the 1950s, housing shortage appeared, which was mainly caused by historical reasons. War destroyed countless private houses in cities, and made people in wartime have little willingness to invest in housing. In the 21st century, with the continuous development of commercial housing and the continuous improvement of China's real estate industry. People have more and more choices to live in. In the pursuit of spacious housing, but also in the pursuit of beauty and comfort. In the 70 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, our motherland has developed from poverty and backwardness to happiness, stability and harmony. Each of us should be proud of the prosperity and strength of the motherland, and be happy for the well-being and happiness of the people. Let us pay tribute to the motherland, to the people, and to the achievements made in the 60 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China.。

unit6-How America Lives

Pre—reading questions1. Americans are said to be open, free, and frank。
What is your opinion?2. How would you compare Americans with Chinese?1 Americans still follow many of the old ways。
In a time of rapid change it is essential that we remember how much of the old we cling to。
Young people still get married (2。
41 million couples last year as opposed to only 1.52 million in 1960)。
Of course, many do get divorced, but they remarry at astonishing rates. They have children, but fewer than before。
They belong to churches, even though they attend somewhat less frequently, and they want their children to have religious instruction. They are willing to pay taxes for education, and they generously support institutions like hospitals, museums and libraries. In fact, when you compare the America of today with that of 1950, the similarities are far greater than the differences.2 Americans seem to be growing conservative。

Marriage and women's social status.C. Social welfare andeducation.D. Family value and housing.Key:[ A ]2. Judge, according to the text, whether the following statements are true or false. 1). Young people still get married, but the divorce rate is higher than the remarriage rate because many don't want to raise children.[ F ]2). The author welcomes the freer patterns of today's courtship and marriage because many young kids of his time suffered bitterly.[ T ]3). Today still very few womenin universities are going up to the athletic programs and demanding a just share of the physical education budget.[ F ]4). American public schools today are inferior to those decades ago.[ T ]5). Builders seem not willing to erect small homes for young married couples becauseit is not very profitable.[ T ]II. WritingStrategiesThis text is an essay of exposition, for it presents solid factsand majorproblems about American social life, though the writer inserts his own ideas at times. The whole article is clearly organized, concentrating on the major changesandproblems in current American society. The paragraphs are developed by the deductive method. Each paragraph contains a topic sentence, which is proved, explained, orillustrated. For example, each of the first three paragraphs begins witha topicsentence. Can you point out the topic sentences of paragraphs 4-8It is easy to see that each paragraph starts with a topicsentence:Paragraph 4: "American women are changing the rules."Paragraph 5: "America is worried about its schools."Paragraph 6: "Some Americans must live on welfare."Paragraph 7: "America cannot find housing for its young families."Paragraph 8: "Our prospects are still good."In order to impressively illustrate, prove, or support the topic statements, the author employs various writing strategies, such as comparison and contrast that are used to show the similarities and differences concerning the issues under discussion. For instance, the beginning paragraph contains five sentences that tell us the relevant similarities and differences by means of comparison and contrast. Can you pick out some sentences in other paragraphs that show a relevant contrastIn Paragraph 2: "The 1980 election, especially for the Senate and House ofRepresentatives, signaled a decided turn to the right insofar as political and social attitudes were concerned. Nor couldI imagine women in universities going up to the men who ran the athletic programs and demandinga just share of the physical education budget. But they are doing this—and with the support of many men who recognize the justice of their claims."In Paragraph 5: "If I had a child today, I would send her or him to a privateschool for the sake of safety, for the discipline that would be enforced and forthe rigorous academic requirements. But I would doubt that the child would get anybetter education that I did in my good public school. The problem is that good public schools are becoming pitifully rare, and I would not want to take the chance thatthe one I sent my children to was inadequate."In Paragraph 6: "In the bad old days she might have known destitution, family assistance she was able to hold her children together and produced but withthree fine, tax-paying citizens." (This sentence implies a contrast: it is not the casenowadays.)In Paragraph 9: "I think of America as having the oldest form of government onearth, because since we started our present democracy in 1789, every other nationhas suffered either parliamentary change or revolutionary change."As can be seen in the text, the tone is mainly objective, and it is definiteand resolute when the writer expresses obligations as well as his attitudes orthat the con diti on has bee n allowed to deve lop For a major n ati on to show itselfIII.
