Many people think that the most popular way of communicating with other people is through the mouth. But what they don’t know is that actual communication using the mouth accounts for only around 10% (or even less) of all the means to communicate a message.
Moreover, you can never determine the truthfulness or honesty of people by what they say alone. In fact, words expressed through the mouth often do not reflect what people really think or feel. The more reliable way you can determine their true inner feelings and thoughts is by reading their body language. Everybody communicates using these gestures and if you understand the gestures and their meanings you will be able to read people and know what they are really
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you can “see through” the emotions of other people? Let’s say you ask a person whether he can do an important task. He says “OK”. But deep inside, you are questioning yourself, “Is he really willing to do this job?” or “Does he have the confidence in finishing this task?” You can’t question him directly because that would be

One Halloween a little boy and his friend went out for a fun night of trick-or-treating. At first everything was great. They were getting lots of candy as they went from house to house, but then they saw a house which they hadn’t been to before. It was a very spooky (阴森森的) house. Being young and brave, they decided to go up to the door and knock. After all, scary houses might have the best candy!
As they walked up the long winding path, they saw things that chilled (使恐惧) them to the bone! They heard sounds that frightened them. Maybe they should turn back. But the little boys, being very brave, just wanted to see what was in that house, so they went on, not deterred by the things they heard or saw. As they slowly made their way up to the door, they imagined what might be inside. Maybe it would be a witch or maybe a ghost!
After knocking several times, the door slowly creaked (嘎吱作响) open. To their surprise, a monster (怪物) slowly came out to greet them. They were so scared that they couldn’t move! What could they do? Then the little boy had an idea. He said, “Trick or treat!” Then the big scary monster, much to the kids’ surprise, reached over and brought out a huge bowl of the best candies they had never seen. Wow, the kids thought, this was great!
It turned out that the house was decorated for Halloween, and the big scary monster was just wearing a costume, just like the kids. Since they were the only kids, and were brave enough to go to the scary house, they could take as much candy as they wanted.

Coral reefs(珊瑚礁)are not just beautiful to look at,but also very useful. They shelter nearly 25%of ocean life and provide food for billions of people. However, like many other species, this amazing ecosystem(生态系统)is in danger of dying out!
There are two main reasons for the destruction(破坏)—the rising carbon dioxide levels caused by global warming as well as human influences like bottom operation. While not much can be done about the former, the loss caused by the latter can be reduced.
Bottom operation involves dropping nets to the ocean bed and then dragging them up when filled with fish. This action damaged the ocean floor, causing the coral branches to separate from the reefs. While that is very discouraging, the good news is that if these branches are found quickly, they can be saved. At present, that work is being performed by volunteer divers. But the method has only limited success because they cannot stay long underwater, nor reach depths of over 200 meters where some of the deep-sea coral grows.
However, this is not the case for Coralbots—the robots that can constantly seek out broken branches.A team of ‘coralbots’,each working to simple rules will piece together’ damaged bits of coral, allowing them to regrow(重生). They are programmed to be able to tell the differences between other things and the coral. The robots work together in groups, similar to bees.If one coralbot is damaged then the others will still be able to complete the task.
Dr Lea-Anne Henry said:“The project of using coralbots offers us the possibility to restore(修复)the function of reefs. It is in the final stage of testing.Once ready, the researchers
hopefully in the oceans across the world.”
28. Which of the following is a cause of the danger that coral reefs are facing ________.
A. The appearance of new creatures.
B. The seriously polluted sea water.
C. The activities of volunteer divers.
D. Human activities like bottom operation.
29. Compared with volunteer divers,coralbots ________.
A. can stay longer underwater
B. must work as bees do
C. can distinguish what is coral
D. can never be damaged
30. What does the underlined word “them” in the last paragraph refer to________.
A. Coralbots.
B. Broken branches.
C. Working bees.
D. Bits of coral.
31. We can infer from the passage that _________.
A. bottom operation has affected most underwater creatures
B. broken branches of coral can regrow if saved in time
C. hundreds of the coralbots have worked well in the oceans
D. with the coralbots all damaged coral reefs can be restored

A Book Review—The Snake-Stone by Berlie Doherty
The setting: Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside) including remote English villages.
The theme: The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero was separated at an early age. Its other concerns are love, getting on with others, being persistent and courageous and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James’ swimming coach says to him: “You are not like a kid obeying instructions any more. You are diving like a young man who knows wh ere he is going.”
The characters(人物): James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents (养父母). Yet he also has the qualities to take him on a long journey to find his birth mother. The other characters in The Snake-Stone, James’ parents, his diving instructor, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured realistically.
The turning point: The turning point in the story comes while James’ foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil, “the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on which she had written: “Take good care of Sammie. It was written on a torn envelope with parts of an address still there.
The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a minor yet powerful voice in the novel. He comes to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him
with a feeling of completeness. As a journey of self-discovery The Snake-Stone also provides its readers with a happy ending. Its hero says, on returning to his foster parents, “I was home.”
32. What do the coach’s words in Paragraph 2 suggest?
A. James is a successful diver.
B. James is a hopeful swimmer.
C. James is an outgoing young man.
D. James is an independent young man.
33. The snake stone in the novel is _____ .
A. a stone with an address on it
B. a clue left by the birth mother
C. a gift from the swimming coach
D. a fossil left by the foster parents
34. Which of the following is true about the novel?
A. The story has a sad ending.
B. The story takes place in the city of London.
C. The characters are vividly(生动地) described.
D. The turning point comes after the hero meets his birth mother.
35. It can be concluded that James’ journey is _________.
