It’s a tempting habit for them to look at their smartphone rather than make eye contact with someone. There is so much to look at: photographs, social media feeds, messages and emails. No wonder they are glued to their screens. But is it good for them?
There have been many claims about the damage looking at screens does to our eyesight. Some people feared staring at a small bright box could make us short-sighted. This is a particular concern for children and young people, who spend a higher percentage of time using electronic devices. BBC reporter, Rory Jones, says, “There is enough evidence that no matter how long teenagers are spending looking at screens, they come across information about issues such as anorexia and self-harm that could prove damaging to their mental health.”
But a new study says time in front of computers and phones might not be as bad for young people as many think. Research by the Oxford Internet Institute examined data from more than 17,000 teenagers in theUK,Irelandand theUnited States. Their study concluded that most links between life satisfaction and social media use were tiny, accounting for less than 1% of a teenager’s wellbeing. Professor Przybylski, director of research, said, “99.75% of a person’s life satisfaction has nothing to do with their use of social media.” The research found that family, friends and school life all had a greater impact on wellbeing.
So, does this mean young people can spend longer looking at social media? TheOxfordresearchers are confident about its findings and that any connection between screen time and mental health is very small. Dr. Max Davie, officer for health improvement at theRoyalCollege, calls the study a “small first step”, but he says there are other issues to explore, such as screen time’s interference(干预) with other important activities like sleep, exercise and time with family or friends. Perhaps for now, the “right” amount of screen time is only a matter of personal judgement.
1. What is people’s common belief concerning screen time?
A. Looking at screens does harm to young people.
B. Screen time provides a chance for teenagers to learn.
C. Most teenagers get near-sighted due to looking at screens.
D. A small amount of time online does little harm to teenagers.
2. What can we learn from the new study by the Oxford Internet Institute?
A. Screen time has a great influence on people’s daily activities.
B. The right amount of the screen time is related to its content.
C. There is a close link between social media and self-satisfaction.
D. Social bonds play a more significant role in people’s wellbeing than social media.
3. Where is the passage most probably taken from?
A. A science fiction.
B. A science magazine.
C. A research paper.

From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Most believe that music helps increase creativity, but an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that view. The study results wereechoedby scientists fromLancasterUniversity, and theUniversityofGavle, saying their findings show music actually weakens creativity.
To reach their conclusions, researchers had volunteers complete verbal problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room, and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music significantly weakened the volunteers’ ability to complete tasks connected with verbal creativity. The team also tested background noises like those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no influence on subjects’ creativity.
The tasks were simple word games. For example, volunteers were given three words, such as dress, rise, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word connected with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunrise, sunflower). Volunteers completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while listening to two different types of music: rock music or light music
“We found strong evidence of weakened performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions,” says co-author D. Neil McLatchie ofLancasterUniversity. He and his colleagues find that music negatively influences the verbal working memory processes of the brain, preventing creativity. Also, as far as the library background noises having seemingly no effect, the study’s authors believe that was the case because library noises create a “regular state” environment that doesn’t affect concentration.
“To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music increases creativity, and instead show that music, whatever type it is, is always a disadvantage for creative performance in problem solving,” the study
reads.

Your house may have an effect on your figure.Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less selfconscious (难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the color1 s. Research suggests warm color1 s fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm color1 s like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold color1 s make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.
Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makesyou less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12inch plate instead of a 10inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake (摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.
8. The text is especially helpful for those who care about ____________.
A. their home comforts
B. their body shape
C. house buying
D.healthy diets
9. A home environment in blue can help people ______________.
A. digest food better
B. reduce food intake
C. burn more calories
D. regain their appetites
10. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?
A. Eat quickly.
B. Play fast music.
C. Use smaller spoons.
D. Turn down the lights.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is Your House Making You Fat?
B. Waysof Serving Dinner
C. Effects of SelfConsciousness
D. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?
D
I don’t want to talk about being a woman scientistagain. There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what it’s like to work in a field dominated (controlled) by men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of space, time and the nature of black holes.
At 19, when I began studying astrophysics (天体物理学), it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as a post-doctor doing space research, the issue started to bother me. My every achievement — jobs, research papers, awards — was viewed through the lens (镜片) of gender (性别) politics. So were my failures. Sometimes, when I was pushed into an argument on left brain versus (相对于) right brain, or nature versus nurture (培育), I would instantly fight fiercely on my behalf and all womankind.
Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would eventually become my reply to any and all provocations (挑衅): I don’t talk about that anymore. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 and to realize that I didn’t want to deal with gender issues. Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist? After all, I don’t study sociology or political theory.
Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women’s college in New York City. Recently, someone asked me how many of the 45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer, 45.
I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. And I
don’t dismiss those concerns. Still, I don’t tell them “war” stories. Instead, I have given them this: the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 women driven by a love of science. And that’s a sight worth talking about.
12. Why doesn’t the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again?
A. She is fed up with the issue of gender discrimination (歧视).
B. She feels unhappy working in male-dominated fields.
C. She is not good at telling stories of the kind.
D. She finds space research more important.
13. From Paragraph 2, we can infer that people would attribute (把……归因于) the author’s failures to ________.
A. the burden she bears in a male-dominated society
B. her involvement in gender politics
C. her over-confidence as a female astrophysicist
D. the very fact that she is a woman
14. What did the author constantly fight against while doing her Ph.D. and post-doctoral research?
A. Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.
B. Unfair accusations from both inside and outside her circle.
C. People’s fixed attitude toward female scientists.
D. Widespread misconceptions about nature and nurtured.
15. What does the image the author presents to her students suggest?
A. Women students needn’t have the concerns of her generation.
B. Women can balance a career in science and having a family.
C. Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.
D. Women now have fewer problems pursuing a science career.

In recently years, the sandstorm in the northern part of China has become more and more common natural disaster. The strong wind blows up some sand, making them difficult for people to go out. Sandstorms are cause by a variety of reason. First, in the past, people feed a great number of sheep. As a result, the sheep ate so many grass that the land turned into deserts. Second, people were not concerning about protecting forests, and cut down many trees, that caused the loss of soil. When it comes to improve the situation, the government starts to stress at the importance of the environment. I believe final the problem will be solved in the near future.

Lesia Cartelli was badly burned in a gas explosion at her grandparent’s house at age 9. In fact, the burns were so severe that her own grandfather didn’t recognize her. But now, this brave woman uses her injured past to help other burn victims find healing.
On that terrible day,Lesia and her cousin were playing in their grandparent’s basement. A gas leak caused the whole house to blow up. The explosion threw many of the 9 family members in the home across the street.
Already a fighter,Lesia pulled herself out of the ruins. Flames still covered her little body,so she rolled in the dirt and snow to put them out.
“It was all face, hands, back and it had burned around my waist,”she says. Lesia’s own grandfather thought she was someone else because of how badly she was burned. As nursing staff loaded her into the ambulance, her grandfather tried to leave. He thought the house ruins still held his granddaughter’s body. Even though Lesia was right in front of him,he didn’t realize it was the same child.
Catching a glimpse of her reflection in the ambulance window helped Lesia understand why her grandfather didn’t recognize her. Burns covered 50%of her body and fire burned off all her hair.
Lesia spent several months in the hospital, undergoing surgeries and skin grafts(移植). Once released,Lesia’s scars(疤)drew stares and questions from people. so she started isolating herself.
“When I was burned, everything in my life changed,”she said. “My friendships changed. I hated going to schoo1. You are coping with things you never had to cope with before. People staring at you. People asking questions. Why do you look like that?”
Lesia could have remained isolated her whole life. When bad things happen,we can always choose to move backwards or to let God give our pain purpose. Lesia chose the latter, realizing she was put on this Earth to do more than just survive.
