Amsterdam Destination Guide
Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museums, cycling culture and so on. It is the capital and most populous city in the Netherlands and often referred to as the “Venice of the North〞 because of its expansive system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You'll also want to check out Amsterdam's Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondel park. The top museums to visit there are the Rijks musuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum.
If You Have Time
There are several other unique districts in Amsterdam, and you should try to explore as many of them as time allows. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a center for celebrity spotting and nightlife today. The Plantage area has most of the city's museums, including the Jewish Historical Museum, the Scheepvaart Museum, and the botanical gardens.
Money Saving Tips
Unless you really want to see the tulips (郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.
Look for accommodations in Amsterdam's South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.
Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They're inexpensive and will give you a special point of view of the city.
Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.

Exactly five years ago, on New Year's Eve, I was invited to a children's ball by a man high up in the business world, who had his connections, his circle of acquaintances, and his close friends. So it seemed as though the children's ball was merely an excuse for the parents to come together and discuss matters of interest to themselves, quite innocently and casually.
I was an outsider, and as I had no special matters to express, I was able to spend the evening independently of the others. There was another gentleman present who had just stumbled upon (偶尔遇到)this affair of domestic happiness, just like me. He was the first to attract my attention. His appearance was not that of a man of noble birth. He was tall, rather thin, very serious, and well dressed. Obviously he had no heart for the family celebration. The moment he went off into a corner by himself, the smile disappeared from his face, and his thick dark brows knitted into a frown. He knew no one except the host and showed every sign of being bored to death, though bravely keeping the role of thorough enjoyment to the end. Later I learned that he was a provincial, had come to the capital on some important business, had brought a letter of recommendation to our host, and our host had taken him under his protection, not at all with love. It was merely out of politeness that he had invited him to the children's ball.
They did not play cards with him .They did not offer cigars. Thus , my
gentleman , not knowing what to do with his hands , spent the evening stroking his whiskers(胡须). His whiskers were really fine, but he stroked them so eagerly that
one got the feeling that the whiskers had come into the world first and afterwards
the man, in order to stroke them.
〔1〕According to the author, the real purpose of the children ball was
that_____________.
A. the parents wanted to make their children happy
B. the parents had a chance to meet and socialize
C. the host hoped to make the guests happy
D. the host wanted to give a welcome to an important guest
〔2〕Why was the gentleman unhappy?
A. He was one of the poor relatives of the host.
B. He was from the countryside.
C. He was trying to do some business with the host.
D. He was not really welcome in the ball.
〔3〕The gentleman touched his whiskers eagerly just because______________.
A. he liked his whiskers very
much B. he had the habit of doing so
C. he was embarrassed in the
ball D. he felt uneasy wearing whiskers
〔4〕When the author was telling the story, he was __________.
A. humorous
B. serio us
C. joking
D. doubtful

A project in Gambia is empowering women and reducing dangerous waste at the same time.
The Waste Innovation Center, funded by the European Union's Global Climate Change Alliance, shows women in the Brikama area how to recycle waste into useful materials and products, which they can then sell in local markets.
Wood-like waste is recycled into charcoal (木炭), for example, which can be used to supersede firewood and reduce the number of trees that are cut down for firewood. Food waste is recycled into compost(混料)to function as environmentally friendly fertilizers and plastic is turned into many useful things.
Supported by Waste Aid UK and the Gambia Women's Initiative (GWI), among others, the project provides women with skills they can use to become self-sufficient (自给自足的). Women learning at the center come from five communities, and some of them travel as far as 12 miles to learn these important skills that will provide them with an income, according to The Guardian.
Isatou Ceesay, who now leads the GWI, highlighted the need to focus on economic equality in her country, telling The Guardian, "In terms of education, women are the ones who are always behind. Boys are chosen to go to school. When we conduct our training, we find women can do a lot, but don't know who they are, or how to
carry out things. "
According to the World Health Organization's Country Cooperation Strategy 2021—2023 report, the main environmental issue facing Gambia is poor waste management in urban areas. Ndey Sireng Bakurin, executive director of the National Environment Agency, has voiced concern over health and environmental risks, such
as water pollution, the increase of insects as well as flooding that occur as a result
of poor waste management.
〔1〕What does the Waste Innovation Center try to do?

When you think of batteries, you'll likely think about them powering up remote controls, cellphones, flashlights and toys. But some people carry a battery around in their body to power a pacemaker (起搏器). It isn't really pleasant and easy to carry batteries because they need to be replaced so often and they can leak poisonous chemicals. A battery-powered pacemaker may become a thing of the past, thanks to a new technology developed by UCLA researchers: A biological super capacitor (超级电容器) , which is thinner than several hairs.
Teams of researchers at UCLA and the University of Connecticut published a paper in a journal explaining their new invention. The super capacitor is made from a carbon material, and coated with human-like proteins that act as electrodes (电极). But what makes the device different is that it is powered by an energy harvester that changes body heat and movement in the blood into energy.
Those traditional pacemakers are six to eight millimeters(毫米) thick. They are much bigger. The new super capacitor, which, due to its lack of battery, is only one micrometer(微米) thick. This "little" feature could benefit the new pacemaker's energy efficiency, researchers stated. Also, unlike other batteries used in medical treatments, the super capacitor can bend and twist in the body without suffering
damage.
Though they've not been widely used in the medical world, super capacitors have the ability to serve as a safer and more efficient medical device than the traditional battery-operated devices, the researchers believe.
"In order to be effective, battery free pacemakers must have super capacitors that can get, store and transport energy. However, commercial super capacitors are too slow to make them work", said Maher El-Kady, a UCLA researcher and co-author
of the study. “Our research focused on the custom-designed super capacitor to capture energy effectively, and finding a way to make it exist together successfully with the human body."
〔1〕What do we know about traditional pacemakers?
A. They are very popular with users.
B. They are thinner than several hairs.
C. They can do harm to the users' bodies.
D. They are really convenient to carry around.
〔2〕What is special about the new super capacitor?
A. It has electrodes on the outside.
B. It is made from a kind of protein material.
C. It helps save the carriers' money and energy.
D. It can transform the energy from the body.
〔3〕Which of the following makes the new pacemaker energy- efficient?
A. The small size.
B. The small battery.
C. The energy harvester.
D. The bending and twisting characters.
〔4〕What is the best title for the text?
A. A New Pacemaker that Doesn't Need to Use Batteries
B. A Battery-Powered Pacemaker Is Harming People's Body
C. People Today Aren't Willing to Use the Traditional Pacemaker Any Longer
D. UCLA Researchers Are Committed to the Cause of the Medical Equipment

M: I know, Lisa…I need to lose weight. But my diet is more important. I'm going to start by eating better. "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," as the saying goes. See? I'm eating an apple instead of a cookie.
W: Eating well is good, but you have to be active. You're not going to get healthier just by sitting on that couch and eating fruit.
M: Well, I can definitely lose weight by eating less. That's the first step. Apples are going to help me. They make me feel less hungry.
W: What about working out? Doesn't that also help to fight sickness and disease? M: It does. But since I haven't gone to the gym in years, I want to lose a little weight first.
W: I know you may feel too shy to exercise in a gym, Pete, but you really need to move more. At least go out for a short jog in the afternoon!
M: You're right. But I'll have to start out slower than a jog! I haven't run in ages.
W: I have an idea. Let's go for a walk around the neighborhood every evening. We can do it when it's dark, so no one recognizes you.
M: Deal! Thank you for understanding, sweetheart.

【解析】【听力原文】 Hongcun is an ancient village in southern Anhui Province, near Mount Huangshan. Locals built an advanced water system by introducing nearby river water into a man-made waterway. The two dozen twists and turns of the stream provide daily water for each household, but the water system also helps keep the temperature inside the village as comfortable as possible. The village is arranged in the shape of an ox, with the nearby Leigang Hill as the head and two ancient trees at the entrance to the village as the horns. The four bridges that cross the Jiyin stream represent the legs, and the houses of the village form the body. Inside the "body", the Jiyin stream represents the intestines(肠) and Nanhu Lake is the belly. There are approximately 150 houses that date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the architecture is said to be the best of its kind in China. One of the biggest houses that are open to visitors, Chenzhi Hall, also contains a small museum. Together with Xidi, Hongcun became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Scenes from the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were filmed in Hongcun.
