Dad was a cowboy who raised me on a farm in the mountains of western Virginia. Working cattle on horseback with him, I made many memories that shape who I am today. One from 1 996 or 1997, when I was a girl, stands out above the rest.
We had to gather a couple hundred head of steers (小公牛) on the farm, so Dad and I rode on the horses and away w e went. Our plan was to sweep around the farm, collecting cat tle along the way. Then we would push them through the corn er gate, which led them through the lower pens (畜
栏), uphill through a path and into the upper pens.
We circled the farm, picking up a steer here and a couple mor e there. Noticing a thunderstorm coming up through the valley , we tried to move a little faster. But our cattle hated the corne r gate. If you pushed them too hard they would run around; if you didn't push them hard enough they would stand there all day. You had to do it just right. I decided to push a little harder , and the lead steer headed toward the gate. I applied a little more pressure, but it was too much. The head steer jumped b ack, scaring the rest. The steers ran in all directions in an inst ant.
I could tell that my father was none too happy, but with the sto
rm about to cut loose, he ordered our retreat. “We'll get them l ater,” he yelled. We took off, but the farther we went, the wors e I felt. So, I turned back, determined to sweep the steers onc e more. The thunder boomed louder and my heart raced faste r as I picked them up along the way. I tried my best to ignore t he weather.
I don't really know when it stopped raining, but by the time I g ot the steers into the upper pens, the sun had come out and D ad was standing at the gate with a big smile on his face. He di dn't give me a pat on the back or say anything special but the smile was enough.

Why are some students academically successful? How do the y achieve that? Want to know their secrets? Read on.
Time management
Time management is number one on the list for a reason. So metimes it's not enough to sit down and think “I need to finish these three assignments by noon.” That's where time manage
ment comes in. A successful student will sit down and plan w hat they need to get done, for example, studying for tomorrow 's test for one hour, doing a math assignment for 30 minutes a nd analyzing a poem for 20. And they take breaks! You canno t function at full capacity (领悟能
力) if you study for four hours straight.
Independence
Independence pairs with time management. Not only do you n eed to be able to schedule your homework, you have to put a way your phone and actually do it. Unfortunately, you cannot r ely on your parents or teachers to hold your hand and guide y ou through the land of homework to good grades. Independen ce became a problem for the students at my school with our n ew schedule. Suddenly helicopter parents weren't there when students were supposed to be doing their work. Although the librarian may try to get them on track, I often see my peers sta rt conversations again as soon as she turns around. If you are constantly relying on your parents and teachers to remind yo u to complete your assignment, it's time to do that for yourself.
Lifestyle
This one sounds strange, but it does help. Energetic exercise before a test or study session has been proven to increase te st scores and productivity. If you are able to, walk to school b efore your morning exam or do some jumping before sitting d own to do homework. Combined with a good diet, your lifestyl e should keep you focused at school, as well as helping you s tay in shape. The ideal lifestyle would also include at least 8 h ours of sleep a night. So why don't more people go to bed ear lier? To be honest I'm not sure. I know I feel awful when I only manage five hours of rest.
If you lead a healthy life and can become an independent, tim e-managing machine you'll be fine.
33. What do helicopter parents most probably like doing?
A. Buying quite expensive things for children.
B. Arranging extra homework for their children.
C. Helping their children to become independent.
D. Paying extremely close attention to their children.
34. What does the author want to show by using himself as a n example in lifestyle?
A. He doesn't have a good lifestyle.
B. A good lifestyle has v arious benefits.
C. Some people stay up late for a reason.
D. Getting enoug
h sleep benefits our studies.
35. What is the text meant to tell us?
A. Why good lifestyles are important.
B. How to manage our time well at school.
C. How to do well in our studies at school.
D. Why some stu dents are less independent.

Dad was a cowboy who raised me on a farm in the mountains of western Virginia. Working c attle on horseback with him, I made many memories that shape who I am today. One from 1 996 or 1997, when I was a girl, stands out above the rest.
We had to gather a couple hundred head of steers (小公
牛) on the farm, so Dad and I rode on the horses and away we went. Our plan was to sweep around the farm, collecting cattle along the way. Then we would push them through the corn er gate, which led them through the lower pens (畜
栏), uphill through a path and into the upper pens.
We circled the farm, picking up a steer here and a couple more there. Noticing a thunderstor m coming up through the valley, we tried to move a little faster. But our cattle hated the corne r gate. If you pushed them too hard they would run around; if you didn't push them hard enou gh they would stand there all day. You had to do it just right. I decided to push a little harder, and the lead steer headed toward the gate. I applied a little more pressure, but it was too mu ch. The head steer jumped back, scaring the rest. The steers ran in all directions in an instan t.
I could tell that my father was none too happy, but with the storm about to cut loose, he order ed our retreat. “We'll get them later,” he yelled. We took off, but the farther we went, the wors e I felt. So, I turned back, determined to sweep the steers once more. The thunder boomed l ouder and my heart raced faster as I picked them up along the way. I tried my best to ignore t he weather.
I don't really know when it stopped raining, but by the time I got the steers into the upper pen s, the sun had come out and Dad was standing at the gate with a big smile on his face. He di dn't give me a pat on the back or say anything special but the smile was enough.
