Starting from my second year of primary school, there was one event I hated every year: the piano recital(独唱会). I didn’t want to practice a boring piece of music and was
afraid to perform in front of strangers. Each year I would ask my father if I could clear the
recital “just this once”. And he would say something about building self-confidence and
working toward a goal.
So I was very satisfied when I stood in church(教堂) and watched my father play the piano during his very first recital. My father wanted to play music when he was small. But his mother couldn’t afford lessons.
Three years ago, when he retired, he asked the church music director, Charles, to take him as a student. Just before the recital, Charles told me my dad was playing “the best I’ve ever seen him.”
For a moment after my father sat down at the keyboard, he simply stared down at(盯得……不敢对视) his fingers. I wondered whether he would even begin.
But then Aram Khachaturian’s Melody began. It seemed that my father was so focused on the music that he didn’t realize we were there.
My dad made it through Melody and then through another song. Although he didn’t have much skill, he made up for it in feeling.
My 11-year-old son Jeff was there. “So what did you think about your granddad?” I asked Jeff later. “He was great,” Jeff replied.
My father may not have reached his height musically, but i n his grandson’s eyes, he’s at the top of the mountain.

On March 14, math and science lovers around the world celebrated a special day: Pi Day.
Pi is equal to about 3.14, but the number goes on endlessly. It is sometimes written in Greek, π. With the help of computers, mathematicians have been able to calculate(计算) pi out
to over a trillion (万亿) decimal (⼩数的) places, but there is still no end to the number. This
makes pi puzzling, even for the most famous scientists and mathematicians.
Pi Day is celebrated around the world on March 14, since how we write this date, 3/14, looks just like the
number pi.
For some people, the appeal(感染⼒) of Pi Day goes far beyond math and science. Pi shows up throughout popular culture. You can see it in movies, comics, music and more. “In modern movies, any time the filmmaker wants to produce a sense of mystery(神秘), often the symbol pi is used,” says David Blatner, Jewish American writer of The Joy of Pi.
People also love trying to memorize the digits(数字) of pi and competing against others to see who can remember the most. Many teachers hold class contests to see how many numbers their students can memorize. The Guinness World Record for reciting the most digits of pi is held by Lü Chao of China, who successfully recited pi out to nearly 67,890 decimal places. Above all, Pi Day is about having fun with the number. People celebrate Pi Day by eating or throwing pie and with fun pi-related games and activities. This year, Princeton, New Jersey, held a birthday party for Albert Einstein whose birthday also falls on March 14. There was also a “Walk a Pi Event” where people walked 3.14 miles together. Just like the number itself, the possibilities for Pi Day are truly endless.

Have you ever experienced the feeling of falling as you start to fall asleep?
Sometimes you may come to realize this feeling. If so, don’t worry. Many people have
felt the same thing.
In fact, these muscle twitches (肌⾁抽搐) in the arms, legs or other parts of the body are called hypnic jerks (⼊睡抽动) or sleep starts. And they are very common. Up to 70
percent of people experience them sometimes, Huffington Post reported. But what causes it?
There are some theories(理论). Some scientists believe that the feeling of falling comes from the body relaxing itself, especially if the person is anxious or unable to get comfortable. As you’re about to sleep, your muscles become relaxed. But your brain stays awake. It misunderstands the relaxing of your muscles as a sign that you’re falling. Then t he brain jerks the body awake as if it’s trying to protect you.
Other scientists believe that different phases of sleep might cause the hypnic jerks. When we sleep, we experience two phases: non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM). During REM, our heart rate (⼼率), breathing and nervous system can act irregularly (不规律地). If the body experiences flashes (⼀瞬间) of REM while entering sleep, these irregularities could cause twitches.
If you don’t want to experience hypnic jerks, scientists have some suggestions. When you become deeply
relaxed, you can learn how to reconnect slowly by moving your fingers and toes a little bit. Then start to move your head and open your eyes, while being aware of yourself as you get out of the relaxed state.
But experts agree that hypnic jerks, though sometimes scary, are harmless. If it wakes you up, simply roll over and go back to sleep. But keep in mind:a caffeinated (含咖啡因的) drink, exciting evening activities or stress may make hypnic jerks happen more often.
42. We know from the passage that .
A. they happen as people wake up
B. muscle twitches are only in the arms and legs
C. they can cause people to fall out of bed
D. more than half of people experience them sometimes
43. Some scientists believe that people usually have the feeling of falling when .
A. their body tries to relax itself
B. they feel safe
C. their brain needs to rest
D. they feel comfortable
44. From Paragraph 4, we learn that .
A. we experience three phases of sleep
B. hypnic jerks take place during NREM
C. our heart rate acts irregularly during REM
D. our nervous system acts regularly during REM
45. Scientists think that .
A. there is no way to avoid hypnic jerks
B. hypnic jerks do no harm to your body
C. you’d better not completely relax while sleeping
D. exciting activities can help hypnic jerks happen less often

At the start of a new year, students will usually write articles to review last year’s work and set goals for the coming year. Well, the Chinese government does this too---it writes the
Government Work Report.
Every year in spring, the National People’s Congress (全国⼈民代表⼤会) meetings are held in Beijing, and big issues (议题) of the country are discussed. At one meeting on
March 5th, Premier Li Keqiang brought out this year’s Government Work Report. This year is quite special because 2016 is the beginning of the 13th Five-Year Plan. Thus, this report lays out(制定) a big plan, which China will follow over the next five years.
For a long time, China has seen fast economic development. Both the country and its people have been becoming richer and richer. But last year, China saw the slowest economic growth speed in the past 25 years. The report pointed out that people
don’t have to worry because China is welcoming a “new economy”. Goals for the economy are always one of the most eye-catching parts.
China used to rely(依靠)a lot on industries like making clothes and toys, which don’t need much science or technology. But now China is changing. It will focus more on developing high-tech companies and service industries like tourism, according to the report.
The report also plans to help people have better lives. The government needs to make sure that city air is clean 80 percent of the year. China will also help more people get good medical care, and they want to increase the average person’s lifetime by one year.
Although facing different kinds of problems, the report believes in a bright future for China. “From the s tart, China has been developing while dealing with challenges. There is no difficulty we cannot get beyond,” wrote the report.
