Only when I see myself clearly and know wh at I really want and who I want to become can I steer myself toward a bright fu ture. Besides, as long as I find my true self, I need to stay true to it. Otherwise, I would take the wrong path, drift far away from my goals and finally lose mys elf in the life journey.

Good morning, my fellow students. It's often said that college life is one of the most meaningful and unforgettable experiences for a person. I totally agree, b ut I learned it the hard way. Today I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you my own experience in the first semester at college, a painful period of tra nsition from a high school kid to an independent grown up.
To most college freshmen, taking their first step in living on their own and star ting campus life can be exciting and joyful. I was no exception. But after the ex citement wore away at the end of the first week, too many unknowns in univer sity life made me uncomfortable, confused and frustrated, a feeling which last ed for more than half of the first semester.
The unpleasant feeling came from my poor self-discipline, for which I paid a hi gh price. Living far away from home and having much free time at hand, I ofte n spent hours playing games or chatting with my friends on my cellphone far i nto the night. As a result, I felt sleepy and couldn't concentrate in class the nex t day. Low grades of a few tests showed my declining academic performance, which affected my final scores of the courses. Only at that time did I realize tha t each test during the semester counted in my college GPA. My poor self-disci pline was also reflected in money management. The suddenly increased freedo m brought me financial problems
during the first three months of my freshman year. Going to movies, buying ex
pensive clothes, and eating out with friends usually cost more than half of my monthly allowance. The worst case was that I spent all of my monthly allowanc e within the first week of the semester, so I had to borrow money from my roo mmates. For that whole month, I ate only rice and vegetables and dared not s ocialize.
Luckily, I realized my problem and managed to improve myself before it was to o late. There must be something to be gained and learned from my unpleasan t experience. One most important thing is that in college, I have to adjust to liv ing on my own, think independently, and take responsibility for my life and stu dies. If I do so, I'll lead a meaningful and fruitful college life.
I am grateful to the hard experience for the lesson it has enabled me to learn . However hard the experience is, I am more self-disciplined and more confide nt in my future life. I hope my personal experience can be also helpful for you, in some way.

Unit project
1.In order to help overseas students learn about Chinese students' views on friendship, I am contributing this report based on the interviews I conducted among 15 classmates of mine.
2.Not surprisingly, all the interviewees agree on the importance of friendship. Some believe friendship is an essential part of their life and others think life would be tasteless without friends around them. As one of them said, one can do without marriage or honor, but they cannot do without friendship.
3.Almost all of the interviewees said their circle of friends is small. Among the 15 interviewees, 7 of them said that they have few true friends, 5 said they have no true friends but just acquaintances, and
only 3 said they have several friends. One important reason is that they are so busy with their studies and social activities in the fast-paced society that they have little time keeping in contact with friends.
4.As for the nature of friendship, the interviewees' views differ. In 6 students' opinion, friendship is like a tree. To start friendship, people need to plant seeds, something that can bond them such as common tastes and interests or mutual admiration. Then they need to work together to make the small tree grow and bear fruit of mutual benefits in the end. Four students think that friendships build a safety net because our loyal friends are always there to provide timely and unselfish support in times of difficulty. As another 2 students see it, friendship goes along a rocky road. It may be easy to become friends in the beginning, but this is only the start of a long, sweet-and-bitter friendship. Friendship is not a smooth highway. It's a road filled with turns and unpleasant surprises. People should learn to deal with their friendship problems. The remaining 3 students even hold a pessimistic view that friendship is a boat. The friendship boat may turn over and even sink when jealous or distrust occurs.
5.To sum up, I think nobody would disagree that friendship is an important part of our life. All the views on friendship do not contradict each other. In fact, each of them looks at friendship from a
different angle. The view that "friendship is like a tree" indicates that friendship requires care and efforts on both sides. By saying "friendships build a safety net," the interviewees mean that friendship is a win-win relationship that benefits both. In contrast, comparing friendship to a rocky road or a boat shows that friendship is a delicate affair involving disagreement, quarrels and even fights. Only with care, understanding and tolerance can we go through the difficult time, deepen friendship, and keep it from going sour. As the saying goes, "True friends care and share."

I think we can manage the fear of speaking in public. As long as we are clear about the reasons behind this fear, we can "manage" it. Some of us dare not speak in public because of lack of self-confidence or experience. In that case, we should first believe that we have
.
something worth sharing and then seek and make use of public speaking opportunities, for example, speaking up in class or in small groups, to practice our skills. For others of us, the source of fear comes from external factors, such as the concern that the audience will not be interested in our topic. A simple way to get rid of the anxiety is to get to know as much as possible about our audience and then tailor our talk to engage the audience.
Frankly speaking, I haven't had any positive experiences with public speaking up to now. In high school, I couldn't give a good public speech no matter how hard I had tried. But I still believe that with practice, I can learn to manage my nervousness and convey my message confidently and clearly in front of a crowd.
I think I should take a couple of measures to cope with the difficulty of speaking in public. On the one hand, I should let go of the negative memories of the past experiences, learn from them and find the reasons for my fear. On the other hand, I should learn some public speaking skills, adopt what works for me and do much practice until I can give an effective presentation. With time and practice, I will feel more comfortable in front of my audience and become more confident in myself.

Yes, I think they are really effective tips to help us enjoy smooth conversations. Actually, one point of these tips is concentration. We may all have experienced conversations where the other person is in fact absent-minded. While we are trying to push the conversation forward, they may just play with their cellphones and make no eye contact with us. In this case, the conversation can hardly move forward.
No, I don't think the tips are effective enough. I think the most important factor for a better conversation is the attitude of the people involved in a conversation. For example, if the person we are talking to sounds honest and gentle, the chances for an enjoyable
conversation are really high. However, if the person looks bossy or rude, we will soon lose the motivation to talk on and will probably end the conversation as soon as possible

7.1>Yes, I agree with the last speaker that travel makes us more of what we are not. I think traveling can broaden my horizons and make me more cultured. In addition, travel forces me to get out of my comfort zone. For example, when I get into a hotel room, the person next door may make noises all night. People who in some way invade my space will force me to get out of my shell and adapt to a new situation, ultimately leaving an influence on my character.
2>No. In my opinion, travel makes us more of what we are. For one thing, I can be my real self when traveling. Surrounded by strangers, I don't have to modulate my behavior or socialize. It's a good chance to relax and to reflect. For another, travel helps me develop my potential. For example, when I travel to a country where I am not familiar with the language, I have to try every means to communicate with the
locals, using gestures or even learning a few words or sentences of their language. The travel experience will help me improve my communication skills and may even make me realize that I perhaps have the potential for language.
