My name is Katie Mackenbrock, and I am from Chicago, Illinois. I am 18 and a
freshman at the University of Arizona. I chose to attend a school so far from home because my dad went here when he was my age, and my older sister is presently a senior here.
The weather is so different here from that in Chicago. If I were in Chicago right now, I would be freezing cold. Here in Tucson, the weather is so nice. It is always sunny with blue skies and the scenery is beautiful. From campus, you can look anywhere and see the beautiful mountains in the skyline.
I live in the only dorm here that has three students in a room. The rooms are a lot bigger than I thought they would be. One of my roommates is from New Jersey and the other one is all the way from South Korea. My roommate from New Jersey and I have become really good friends. Our other roommate is kind of mean(卑鄙的) to us, so there is always awkward(尴尬的) tension in our room, which isn’t too fun, but I am always so busy with my study that it doesn’t matter too much.
I am taking 5 classes here--- English, Spanish, and three general education classes. The general education classes are the big lecture classes. I am not too fond of them, because I come from a very small high school. For the most part, though, I love my classes. I am a political science major. I want to attend law school after I graduate and eventually work for the CIA.
As much as I miss my parents being this far from home, I love living here. It helps that I get to see my sister almost every day. I couldn’t have chosen a better college for myself.

Good health is the most valuable thing a person can have, but one cannot take good health for granted. It is important to remember that the body needs proper care in order to be healthy. There are three things that a person can do to help stay in good shape: eat right food ,get enough sleep, and exercise regularly.
Proper nutrition (营养) is important for good health. Your body cannot work well unless it receives the proper kind of “fuel”(燃料).Don't eat too much food with lots of sugar and fat. Eat plenty of foods high in protein ,like meat, fish, eggs and nuts. Vegetables and fruits are very important because they provide necessary vitamins and minerals. However, don't overeat. It is not helpful to be overweight.
Getting the proper amount of sleep is also important. If you don't get enough sleep, you feel tired and easily get angry. You have no energy. Over a long period of time a little a amount of sleep may even result in a change of personality. Be sure to allow yourself from seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you do, your body will feel strong and refreshed, and your mind will be sharp.
Finally, get plenty of exercise. Exercise firms the body, strengthens the muscles, and prevents you from gaining weight. It also improves your heart and lungs. If you follow a regular exercise program, you will probably increase your life-span (寿命).Any kind of exercise is good. Most sports are excellent for keeping the body in
good shapes: basketball, swimming, bicycling, running and so on are good examples. Sports are not only good for your body, but they are enjoyable and interesting, too.

We know that many animals do not stay in one place. Birds, fish and other animals move from one place to another at a certain time. They move for different reasons most of them move to find food more easily, but others move to get away from places
that are too crowded. When cold weather comes, many birds move to warmer places to find food. Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed. The most famous migration(迁移)is probably the migration of the fish, which is called “salmon”. This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water. There it spends its life. When it is old, it returns to its birthplace in fresh water. Then it gives birth and dies there. In northern Europe, there is a kind of mice. Recently, scientists have studied the migration of a kind of lobsters(龙虾). Riding was the favourite activity of Thomas Jefferson, who was the third President of the United States. He usually rode good horses.
One day, he was riding outside Washington, when a jockey (赛马师) came near. He did not know the President, but his professional eye was attracted by Mr. Jefferson’s horse. He stopped and said that he wanted to buy the horse, but Mr. Jefferson politely refused his offer.
The jockey offered more money for the horse, because the closer he looked at the horse, the more he liked it. All of his offers were refused, which made him angry. He then became rude, but his rudeness left as little an impression as his money, for Jeff erson had a very good temper. At last, he hit Mr. Jefferson’s horse with his whip, getting it to run suddenly. This would have thrown a less skillful rider to the ground, but Jefferson stayed on his seat, and controlled his horse well.
The jockey then gave up. He rode with Mr. Jefferson side by side and began to talk with him about politics. Jefferson joined in the conversation. When they got into the city and came close to the gate of the presidential mansion (总统府), Mr. Jefferson stopped, and politely invited the man to enter.
