As a proverb goes, anyone invariably belongs to a nation and an epoch. So is any culture. Some people may regard the sixth Disney theme park in Shanghai as the cultural invasion or to be more serious, cultural crusher. Before presenting my view, I think it is vital to analyze both arguments.
The cultural invasion can be defined as a country‘s conquering another one through cultural transformation. In peace time, it is often reflected that developed countries try to control developing c ountries’ cultural market and change their customs. In this sense, the idea seems to hold water.
However, the contents in the culture of the times should also be taken into consideration. Some contents mirror the historical progress, thus forming the spirit of the times. The national spirit for the other nation could be a limitation, while the spirit of the times could be a consensus of all nations. Another consideration is that each culture is actually adding spice to human civilization. To be more specific, various cultures are not only the crystallization of human wisdom, but the driving force of social development. Despising other cultures proves nothing and settles nothing; being optimistic and arrogant blindly shows nothing but ignorance and narrowness.
In the final analysis, fear should not be an excuse for our refusal to learn and aloofness is not reason for us to avoid the renewal. Living in this global village, we should learn from others, live by ourselves and look forward to the future.

鄙视其它文化既证明不了任何事也解决不了任何事，而盲目的乐观与自大只能表达无知与狭隘。

归根结底，害怕不应该成为我们拒绝学习的借口，而清高也不是我们避免吐故纳新的理由。

生活在这样一个地球村，我们应该学习他人，依靠自己，展望未来。

As a saying goes, the law cannot make all men equal, but they are all equal before the law. Does it apply to drunk drivers’ exposure to the soci ety? People’s vies vary greatly.
Those who object to it may argue that this practice not only invades drivers’privacy, but basically goes against the equal principle of society as well. That is to say, those who make even one mistake may be regarded as pests of society or hated by the public, thus having no chance to correct it. This, more or less, seems to be unfair and undesirable in this civilized society.
However, others say high praise of this practice. The first consideration lies in rights. To be true, exposing drunk drivers to media does to some extent violate their right of privacy. But when drivers drive after drinking, they actually give up their rights
excuse of escaping penalties. A self-evident fact is that nobody can enjoy unlimited rights and undertake no responsibility. Another point to note is education. To drunk drivers, this punishment compels them to make a self-examination of their mistakes and look before they leap next time they want to do it again. To other drivers who never drive after drinking, it serves as the deterrent or reminder that reminds them that obeying the law is an essential quality of a person in contemporary society.
As I see it, punishment is justice for the unjust and law can never be enforced unless fear supports it.
F. Sports stars should not earn high salaries. Agree or disagree?
As a result of constant media attention, sports professionals in my country have become stars and celebrities, and those at the top are paid huge salaries. Just like movie stars, they live extravagant life styles with huge houses and cars.
Many people find their rewards unfair, especially when comparing these super salaries with those of top surgeons or research scientists, or even leading politicians who have the responsibility of governing the country. However, sports salaries are not determined by considering the contribution to society a person makes, or the level of responsibility he or she holds. Instead, they reflect the public popularity of sport in general and the level of public support that successful stars can generate. So the notion of ‘fairness’ is not the issue.
Those who feel that sports stars’ salaries are justified might argue that the number of professionals with real talent are very few, and the money is a recognition of the skills and dedication a person needs to be successful. Competition is constant and a player is tested every time they perform. in their relatively short career. The pressure from the media is intense and there is little privacy out of the spotlight. So all of these factors may justify the huge earnings.
Personally, I think that the amount of money such sports stars make is more justified than the huge earnings of movie stars, but at the same time, it indicates that our society places more value on sport than on more essential professions and achievements.

在我个人看来，比起电影明星的高薪，体育明星的高薪更受之无愧。

但与此同时，该现象也显得出我们的社会更关注体育而非其它一些更重要的领域与成就。

I. The causes and solutions of generation gap

In modern society, there is often a lack of understanding between parents and children. Parents dislike what their children think and do, while children often complain that their parents can not understand them. This is often called generation gap.
There are some reasons for the existence of generation gap. For one thing, the environment in which young people now living is quite different from that of their parents'. Therefore, they often hold different opinions on various problems in life. For another thing, disparity in age also leads to misunderstanding. Young people want to do everything as they like, while older people often can't help interfering when they think what the young people are doing is wrong. This inevitably leads to disharmony.
According to my understanding, generation gap can be bridged as long as both parents and children are willing to make efforts. They may have an open talk and tell each other what they think about certain problems. They should be considerate enough to realize that each generation has its own advantages and disadvantages. Their openness and consideration probably will result in a much better relationship between parents and children.

One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people have to choose their way of life. In the easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money; and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the strong desire that parents have for their children are another cause of the disagreement between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in comMon with each other.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in modern society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in modern society, the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities.
No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a future of our life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the changes of our society, and in the rapid speed at which society changes.

G. TV alienates families' relationships. Agree or disagree?
Television, as one of the most fascinating inventions in the 20th century, is now penetrating every family. It seems that even people who take no interest in it can never avoid being influenced by television. A consequent question is whether TV worsens family members’ relationships. Before presenting my point of view, I think it is of importance to analyze both arguments.
Some people hold the opinion that television should be bl amed for alienating families’ relationships. As they remark, with TV, every family member is attracted by various eye-catching programs to their taste. Thus, they rarely have time to communicate with each. To make matters worse, family members are forever quarrelling over which program they should watch.
However, a closer examination will lead us to a totally different conclusion. Rather than destroying family members’ relationships, television actually enhances their relationships. Diverse appealing TV programs present a vivid world before people. Not only can people acquire knowledge by watching TV, but they can get relaxed and entertained. These wonderful programs provide family members with a good opportunity to talk with each other, laugh together and strengthen family ties. Nobody is willing to let so-called different tastes devastate their feeling. On the contrary, different families learn to respect each other and show tolerance for different tastes in the process of choosing programs. In this sense, family ties are bettered.
An even harder truth is that watching TV creates a looser atmosphere. Maybe, it is not of significance for people to watch TV, it is more substantial that they sit together and chat with each other after school or work. In this way, family members feel easy and thrilling, free from the disturbance of the outside world. By occupying their time so constructively, they never have to think up other ways to make themselves easy. Positive communication among different family members is the result we can predict, therefore promoting family members’ relationships.
Above all, it is not difficult for us to draw a telling conclusion that instead of alienating families’ relationships, TV offers a terrific way for them to communicate with each other, thereby bettering their relationships. As a matter of fact, isolation of family members attributes to many other factors, such as too much pressure from work and education, over-exposure to the Internet and different outlooks of the world held by two generations. More important, it is high time that we should find out the real causes of this problem.
J. The causes and consequences of urbanization
Along with globalization have come urbanization and centralization. To be precise, the size of cities is expanding considerably, a large amount of population living in cities. This phenomenon can be attributable to many factors and consequently, it also gives rise to many problems. In this article, I will outline some most substantial ones respectively.
The first reason to be mentioned here is overpopulation. With the development of economy and technology, city life is more appealing than ever possible before. In cities, people can receive better education, have more job opportunities, enjoy more conveniences like entertainment, shopping and transportations, acquire finer welfare and healthcare and obtain the latest information. Because of this, people in a growing number are streaming into cities. With this, the size of cities is forced to expand at an amazing rate, so as to accommodate such amount of population.
Another significant element to be illustrated is the boom of technology. With various hi-tech marvels employed in transportations, diverse arrays of free ways and express ways are now eliminating the geographic barrier, connecting the urban and suburban perfectly. It is hardly to tell which is which.
The last cause that accoun ts for this phenomenon is that in some city planners’ mind, the concept of ‘the bigger, the better’ takes root. In order to attract more foreign investment or impress visitors, many city planners spare no effort to further promote urbanization. Thus, it is not strange to see that many metropolises are emerging year by year.
Needless to say, this development leads to many severe problems. The environmental contamination is becoming increasingly pressing, housing shortage, water scarcity and energy crisis incredibly serious. Furthermore, fewer jobs are supplied and the unemployment rate is on a rise. Even worse, the criminal rate increases sharply. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, proper measures should be taken before things get worse. Otherwise, we will eventually pay a heavy price for this negative development if the situation still goes like this.
E.The advantages and disadvantages of international tourism
As the first and foremost industry in the world, international tourism never fails to fascinate people. Maybe, nothing has received more praise and abuse than it. Some may deem that with international tourism booming, some serious problems are being brought to people’s attention. However, others argue that it enjoys more benefits. Personally, I agree with the latter view for the following reasons.
Admittedly, international tourism indeed gives rise to some problems. One is the environmental pollution and another one is traffic congestion. As more and more people visit other countries, those countries people visit may suffer from the environmental pollution considerably and their traffic conditions may go from bad to worse.
However, it is still questionable to assert that international tourism is a curse. As a matter of fact, its upsides carry more weight. The first one is that international tourism is beneficial to the economic development. Not only does international tourism promote the exchange of information and technology, b ut it creates more job opportunities as well. A nation’s economy may benefit from this trend remarkably.
Another point to be considered is that international tourism is positive to the cultural diversity and world peace. When visiting an other country, people learn to respect and accept the country’s customs and cultures in order to adapt themselves to the country and enjoy their staying there. In this way, cultural bias among different countries is removed step by step and the cultural diversity is realized to a considerable degree. More importantly, when feeling their cultures and customs are cherished by people from other countries, people of the host country will be encouraged and moved. No doubt, mutual understanding and long-lasting friendship can be expected and misunderstanding, prejudice and discrimination will be gone with wind. It can be predicted that the world peace will have a brighter future.
Above all, it is not hard to draw a conclusion that compared with its demerits; international travel’s merits carry more water. Therefore, it should be advocated, encouraged and supported to the full.

I am writing to let you know the deplorable attitude of one of your staff member. I received my telephone bill for the previous month from you and thought there were some errors in calculation: I had been overcharged for two overseas calls.
However, when I called your Complaints Department, the girl who answered my phone was very rude. For one thing she interrupted me continually, for another she even said that the fault was my own. Needless to say, such a way of dealing with customers is unacceptable.
I would like to suggest that the girl in question should be disciplined, and instructed on the proper way to deal with clients. And I hope she can make formal apology to me.
