‘I’ve got a present for you,’ she said with a smile. It was askipping rope with red and blue handles!
“我有一件礼物要送给你，”她笑着说。那是一根有红蓝把手的跳绳!
‘You are very kind,’ Mary said.‘But what is it?’
早饭后，玛莎去看望她的母亲。玛丽在家里没有她时感到孤独，于是她走到外面明媚的阳光下。她围着喷泉转了十圈又一圈，很快就感觉好些了。本·威瑟斯塔夫在菜园里。那天他看上去并没有生气，所以她就去找他说话。
‘The spring’s coming,’ he said to her.’Can you see those greenpoints in the earth?’

The next two days it rained and it was very windy so Mary couldn’tgo outside. Then, on the third morning when she opened hereyes and looked out of the window, she had a big surprise. Shecalled to Martha,’ Martha! Come and look at the moor!’
‘The key to the secret garden!’ she whispered excitedly.
“秘密花园的钥匙!”她兴奋地低声说。
Mary looked at the key for a long time. Then she put it in herpocket and walked back to her room.
The robin washopping around on the ground. Mary waswatching him when she saw something in the earth. She pickedit up. It was an old key.
知更鸟在地上跳来跳去。玛丽正在看着他，这时她看到地上有什么东西。她把它捡起来。那是把旧钥匙。
她感到非常兴奋。她把手伸进口袋，掏出了那把旧钥匙。然后她把它插进门锁里转动。她推了推门，门慢慢地开了。她在秘密花园里面!
Then the robin appeared and sat on the ground near them.

‘Is spring coming in the secret garden, too?’ Mary asked Ben.
“秘密花园的春天也要来了吗?”玛丽问本。
‘Or are all the flowers dead?’
“还是所有的花都死了?”
‘Ask the robin,’ said Ben Weatherstaff.’He’s the only one whoknows.’ And he went back to work.
“问知更鸟吧，”本·威瑟斯塔夫说。“他是唯一知道的人。然后他又回去工作了。
“春天来了，”他对她说。“你能看到地球上那些绿点吗?”
Mary looked.

‘What are they?’ she asked.

‘They’re spring flowers - crocuses, snowdrops and daffodils.’

‘You showed me the key yesterday,’ she said.’Can you showme the door today?’

The robin flew to the top of the wall and began to sing loudly.Suddenly the wind blew’ the long branch of ivy to one side.Mary caught it in her hand and held it because she could seesomething under it - a door!
知更鸟飞到墙头上，开始大声唱歌。突然，风把长春藤的长枝吹向一边。玛丽把它抓在手里，因为她看到它下面有东西——一扇门!
She felt very excited. She put her hand in her pocket and tookout the old key. Then she put it in the lock of the door and turnedit. She pushed the door and it opened very slowly. She was insidethe secret garden!
“你真好，”玛丽说。“但是它是什么呢?”
‘What!’ cried Martha.‘Didn’t you have skipping ropes in India?‘Watch me!’
“什么!”玛莎喊道。“你们在印度不是跳绳吗?”“看着我!”
She ran into the middle of the room and began to skip. Sheskipped and skipped and skipped. When she stopped, she gavethe rope to Mary.

After breakfast Martha went to visit her mother for the day.Mary felt lonely in the house without her so she went outsideinto the bright sunshine. She ran round and round the fountainten times and soon she started to feel better. Ben Weatherstaffwas in the vegetable garden. He didn’t look cross that day So shewent to speak to him.
阳光灿烂，天空湛蓝。玛丽在大花园里跳着数着数着跳着。她决定在花园围墙外沿着她最喜欢的小路蹦蹦跳跳。路很长，她走到尽头之前就不得不停下来，因为她累了。
Then she saw the robin sitting on a long branch of the ivy onthe wall. He chirped. Mary went up to him.
她跑到房间中央，开始蹦跳起来。她蹦蹦跳跳。当她停下来时，她把绳子给了玛丽。
‘Now you try,’ she said.
“现在你试试吧，”她说。
Mary was not very good at skipping at first. But she tried andtried and soon she didn’t want to stop.

‘Put on your hat and coat and skip outside,’ Martha said.

The sun was shining and the sky wasblue. Mary skippedand counted and counted and skipped around the big garden.She decided to skip along her favourite path outside the walledgardens. It was very long and she had to stop before she arrivedat the end of it because she was tired.
接下来的两天又下雨又刮风，所以玛丽不能出去。第三天早上，当她睁开眼睛向窗外望去时，她大吃一惊。她对马大说:“马大!快来看看沼地!”
There was no wind or rain and the sky was deep blue.
没有风也没有雨，天空是深蓝色的。
‘Yes,’ said Martha with a smile.’The spring’s coming.’
