Throughout the past year, we followed some interesting new inventions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022.
Meta’s speech-to-speech translation
Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form.
Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding (编码) tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text.
Method to identify Parkinson’s disease
Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the Al system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent.
Tool to interpret pig emotions
Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions.
The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven algorithm (算法) to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals.
Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings
Researchers - led by Alphabet’s AI Company DeepMind - said they developed an AI system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written.
The team said that when historians work on their own, the success rate: for repairing damaged writings is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent.

Della Steward got the standard well-wishes on her blog on her 53rd birthday, but she got some unusual messages too. One was about the Smith family who had just lost their four-year-old son to cancer. His older brother was in deep sorrow. Could Della help?
That message and the 30 or so others like it were exactly what Della was looking for. To celebrate her 53rd, the long-time social service professional had put out a call on her log. She wanted to commit 53 random acts of kindness by the end of her birth month, and she needed information on people who could use one. When she got the note about the Smith family, she sent a wind chime (风铃) with the message “Listen to the wind and know that I am near” written on it. It now hangs in the four-year-old’s bedroom, where his older brother can go to listen to it whenever he wants.
This is not the first time that Della has decided to give gifts for her birthday. For her 47th, in 2016, she founded Love in Action, an organization committed to doing something good near her home and beyond. Its aim is simple: Do Your Best, Show Your Love!
Over the years, the organization has reached out and touched well over 100 strangers, some found via Della’s blog, others with help from her grandkids. The organization also shares inexpensive and creative gift ideas for others to help people in need.
Della pays for everything herself: gift cards, pay-it-forward purchases at
drive-throughs, and care packages, as well as the gas it takes to play fairy. Her family often gives her some extra birthday cash with a serious warning against spending it on anyone else, which she naturally ignores. “I got a couple of gift cards for my birthday this year and was like ‘YESSS!’” It’s Della’s party, and she’ll give if she wants to.
24. What were the unusual messages Della got on her 53rd birthday?
A. Help requests.
B. Gift ideas.
C. Donation offers.
D. Birthday wishes.
25. What can we learn about Della from her gift to the Smith family?
A. She is caring and brave.
B. She is loving and helpful.
C. She is patient and romantic.
D. She is creative and determined.
26. Which of the following best describes Love in Action?
A. It involves people in acts of kindness.
B. It holds the belief that kindness pays off.
C. It offers aid within Della’s neighborhood.
D. It mainly aims to educate kids to help out.
27. Why does Della’s family give her warnings?
A. She thinks little of her family’s concern.
B. She treats strangers better than her family.
C. She is financially dependent on her family.
D. She is too ready to give away her birthday gifts.
Traditionally, when satellites reach the end of their useful lives, they remain in orbit. The same goes for rocket stages. All this junk (垃圾) is causing the space around Earth to become crowded. These pieces break up over time, resulting in smaller objects that can’t be tracked anymore.
Space junk is perilous. Things move at really fast speeds in low-Earth orbit, so a crash with something even as small as a nail can be disastrous. The larger objects are just as much of a problem because they can crash, creating a chain of smaller crashes and countless more untraceable small pieces.
Noting that this is a big problem that needs to be addressed, the European Space Agency (ESA) will be sending a massive claw (爪) into space to remove the buildup of space junk. The ClearSpace-1 mission, as it is called, will be the first attempt to deal with orbiting space garbage.
Swiss startup ClearSpace built the big claw. The device will grab a piece of space junk the size of a washing machine with a four-armed claw and carry it to a lower orbit where it will burn up when entering the atmosphere. Head of ESA’s Clean Space Office, Luisa Innocenti, said: “The challenge is designing an imaging system that can quickly and autonomously characterize the object before the claw grabs it. My colleagues and I have also argued over the catch technique: Grabbing with a claw requires a close approach, whereas snaring (捕获) in a net can be done from a safe distance — but has to work the first time.”
In the end, they chose the big claw, preferring multiple attempts over distance security. The piece being targeted is a simple 112-kilogram Vespa (Vega Secondary Payload Adapter). After this mission proves successful, the company will move to larger and more ambitious targets and assignments that can deal with multiple targets at the same time to reduce costs.
The mission will cost 100 million Euros. It’s an expensive job but ensuring that the space around the planet remains clear is vital. If too much space junk gathers around Earth, it will make future space launches impossible.
28. What does the underlined word “perilous” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Recyclable.
B. Common.
C. Dangerous.
D. Unmanageable.
29. What challenge did ClearSpace face concerning space junk?
A. Carrying it to a lower orbit.
B. Identifying it quickly.
C. Grabbing it from a distance.
D. Making a claw to catch it.
30. What will ClearSpace try to do after dealing with the Vespa?
A. Use nets to grab space junk.
B. Seek financial support from ESA.
C. Collect space junk of less than 112 kilograms.
D. Clean up more than one piece of space junk at a time.
31. What does the author think of the ClearSpace-1 mission?
A. Worthwhile.
B. Money-saving.
C. Time-consuming.
D. Silly.
Bhutan is one of the world’s most mysterious (神秘的) countries. Visiting it can be challenging, but there’s a new drive to finally cross it off the bucket list in 2022, as its breathtaking Trans Bhutan Trail (小径) will be reopening to travelers for the first time in 60 years.
According to the Bhutan Canada Foundation — the main donor to the restoration project — the 250-mile route connects nine districts, 28 local governments, one national park and 400 historic and cultural sites. Travelers who follow the entire trail route will cross 18 major bridges and climb 10,000 stairs. It will be possible to walk or mountain bike there.
“This is a community-based project in both its building and operation which will restore an ancient cultural treasure and provide a sustainable, net zero carbon experience in the country for travelers,” says Sam Blyth, chair of the Bhutan Canada Foundation. “The Trans Bhutan Trail also reflects the country’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness and will allow the children of Bhutan to walk in the footsteps of their ancestors.”
The trail’s westernmost point is the town of Haa, which is near the border with Tibet, China. The easternmost point is Trashigang, near the border of India’s Arunachal Pradesh state. According to a representative for the Bhutan Canada Foundation, an ambitious walker could cover the whole trail in about a month, but most tourists will likely enjoy shorter parts of the trail on three-, four-, or seven-day trips.
Due to its “high value, low impact” tourism strategy, Bhutan averaged just a few thousand visitors in a typical year before COVID-19 occurred. As part of its aim to avoid overtourism, the country charges a mandatory (强制的) $250 per day fee, which includes land transport, accommodations, food and guide service. The cost makes it somewhat prohibitive for many people to visit. And walkers to the Trans Bhutan Trail will have to apply for a permit. They can do this beginning in April.
32. What do we know about the Trans Bhutan Trail?
A. It connects several national parks.
B. It has been left unused for decades.
C. It has been maintained by the local governments.
D. It is more popular with mountain bikers than walkers.
33. What can we infer about the trail from Sam Blyth?
A. It allows children to reflect on themselves.
B. It provides a community experience for travelers.
C. It teaches people to learn from their happy ancestors.
D. It builds a connection between current and past generations.
34. What can walkers to the Trans Bhutan Trail do?
A. Choose from four types of short trips.
B. Collect ancient treasures along the way.
C. Explore Haa at the trail’s easternmost point.
D. Take a month-long trip to cover the whole trail.
35. What is Bhutan’s tourism strategy?
A. Putting profits first.
B. Giving fines to badly-behaved visitors.
C. Developing tourism without putting nature at risk.
D. Offering tourists high-quality accommodations and food.

“Oh, no!” Jack shouted, looking at the likes and comments on his recent TikTok video.
“Why aren’t people reacting to my content as they used to?”
Jack was a 19-year-old strong and muscular man addicted to the gym. He loved recording exercise videos and posting them on his TikTok account. Initially, his video logs (vlogs) were popular, but his posts’ reach soon decreased.
Jack wondered why people had stopped sharing and liking his videos, “Maybe my audience is tired of watching me work out in the gym,” he thought, determined to change the location of his videos.
The following day, Jack went to the neighborhood park and began filming while he was walking on the track. “Hi, guys! How about we shake things up a little? I’m to work out in the park today!” he said excitedly, looking into the camera lens (镜头).
“Let’s look for a good spot to warm up,” he said as he walked towards a bench, on which sat an elderly lady. Jack thought the bench was the perfect place to film his video because of the light.
He put his tripod stand (三脚架) on the bench and set the camera, but he felt like he needed the full bench. He wanted to place his camera where the lady sat, so he gestured to her to move, but the woman didn’t seem to understand.
“Get out of my way!” he yelled. “Can’t you see I’m filming a video? You old fool!” Looking him up and down in surprise, the old lady didn’t argue over his disrespectful attitude and quietly walked towards another bench.
Jack set his camera up, pressed the record button and waved at his followers, ready to demonstrate exercises. Suddenly, he tripped on a loose stone, lost balance and fell down, his head striking the bench and bleeding heavily.
Crying in pain, Jack tried to get up, but he didn’t have the strength to rise. He collapsed on the ground, screaming desperately for help.
