Cao Chong weighs the elephant
One day, Sun Quan gives Cao Cao an elephant. When the elephant comes, Cao Cao takes his
officials and his little son, Cao Chong， to see the elephant. All of them never see the elephant
before. So they are all surprised at this tall and big animal. Its legs are as big as the pillar of the
house. Cao Cao says to the officials: “ The elephant is so big, but how heavy is it? Do you have
an idea to weigh this elephant?”
One official says: “We can make a very very big steelyard.”
But another official says: “ The elephant is so heavy, who can lift the steelyard? In my opinion,
we can kill the elephant and cut it into pieces. Then we weigh the pieces one by one.”
Other officials all shake their heads and say: “ Your idea doesn’t make sense. We kill the
elephant just to weigh it. What a pity!”
At this moment, Cao Cao’s little son, Cao Chong says: “ I have an idea to weigh the elephant .”
Cao Chong is 5 years old, but he is very clever. Cao Cao likes him very much.
So Cao Cao asks him: “ How do you do that ?”
Cao Chong says: “ First, we prepare a big boat and drive the elephant on the boat. Next, draw
a line on the boat along the water line. Then drive the elephant off the boat, and put stones on
the boat. When the line on the boat meets the water line, stop putting stones. Lastly, weigh the
stones on the boat. They are as heavy as the elephant.”
All the officials praise Cao Chong a clever boy!

当⼤象运来的时候，曹操带着他的官员们和他的⼩⼉⼦曹冲去看⼤象。

他们之前从来没有见过⼤象。

所以他们都被这个⼜⾼⼜⼤的动物惊呆了。

他的腿就像房⼦的柱⼦那么⼤。

曹操对官员们说：“⼤象这么⼤，但是它有多重呢？你们有办法称这只⼤象吗？”
⼀位官员说：“我们可以做⼀个很⼤很⼤的秤。

”
但是另⼀个官员说：“⼤象这么⼤，谁能提起这杆秤呢？依我看，我们可以杀了⼤象把它切成块。

然后我们⼀块接⼀块的称。

”
其他的官员都摇头说：“你的办法⾏不通。

我们杀了⼤象仅仅为了称它。

太可惜了！”
这时，曹操的⼩⼉⼦，曹冲说：“我有办法称这头⼤象”
曹冲虽然只有5岁，但他⾮常聪明。

曹操很喜欢他。

曹操问他：“ 你怎么做呢？”
曹冲说：“⾸先，我们准备⼀只⼤船并把⼤象赶到船上。

接着，沿着⽔位线在船上画⼀条线。

然后，把⼤象赶下船，并往船上放⽯头。

当船上的线和⽔位线相遇时，停⽌装⽯头。

最后，称船上的⽯头。

他们和⼤象⼀样重。

”
所有的官员都夸曹冲是⼀个聪明的孩⼦。
