Beard Telling the Truth
An ISIS fighter dressing up as a dumb madam attempted to escape from Mosul but was caught. Dressed in women’s clothes and with cautious make-up, the bearded man forgot to get rid of his facial hair. It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see some rain soon we would lose everything.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my sixyearold son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He was obviously walking with a great effort, trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I rushed out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill the water he held in them. Branches hit his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.
Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, and lift its head with great effort to accept the water cupped in my beautiful boy’s hands.
I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart I have ever known working so hard to save a life. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops...and more drops...and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, himself, was weeping with pride.

The things we use, from iPhone to cars to IKEA furniture, have costs that go well beyond their purchase price. What if the soybeans used to make that tofu you ate last night were grown in fields that were cut out of tropical rainforests? Or what if that T-shirts you bought came from an industrial area carved
out of high-value habitat in Malaysia? Unless you buy sustainably(可持续地)sourced food or goods, however, it can be hard to know customer purchases affect groups of animals or plants until now.
Daniel Moran from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and Keiichiro Kanermoto from Shinshu University in Japan have developed a technique that allows them to realize danger to wildlife caused by the worldwide supply chains. They’ve used this technique to create a series of world maps that show the species threat hot spots for individual countries.
The researchers calculated the percentage of danger to an animal or a plant in one country due to consumption(消费)of goods in another. They focus on 6,803 animals and most of them are easily hurt or in danger of dying out. They found that US consumption caused species threat hot spots in Southeast Asia, but also in southern Europe, throughout Central America and into southern Canada.
The researchers say finding the relationship between consumption and environmental impacts(影响) offers an important opportunity for governments, companies, and individuals to find ways to act against them and do something connected with trade and industry. For example, Indonesia local government can only control the producers whose products cause losses of various plants and animals and cutting or burning down the trees. But if the EU wants to look at its role in causing those problems in Indonesia, they could look at the maps and see what kind of impacts EU customers are having on that country and then decide to adjust their research programmes or environmental priorities and make changes.
28. Why does the author use the examples in Paragragh 1?

B. To find practical ways to protect the animals, plants and trees.
C. To reach wise decisions based on the local actual situations.

B. To give a reasonable explanation

A. It went beyond people’s expectation.
B. It has involved all kinds of animals.
C. It firstly started in the USA.
D. It is caused by global supply chains.
31. What is the passage mainly talking about?
A. How to apply modern technology to protect wildlife.
B. How we solve the new environmental problems.
C. What we buy has something to do with the endangered species.
D. We can afford to buy whatever we need now.
D
Almost all of us have thought about, or been asked to think about, our future careers. Our answers may differ greatly. Even now your selections may have changed from when you were in primary school.
However, it seems that career options are not only based on personal taste. In a survey carried out by Teens, doctors, lawyers and bankers were some of the most popular careers that people said they hoped to follow and medicine was the top choice among UK teenagers aged between 13 and 17.
Medicine and law are two of the oldest and best known professions. Their fame may come from the fact that doctors and lawyers are some of the most admired members of society, and they make good money. Joining these highly attractive professions is often seen as a sign of upward social mobility(社会的流动性).
It is equally unsurprising that banking is now one of the most common career choices. Youngsters worldwide think of banking and see the money rolling in. It is increasingly becoming one of the most important factors of a successful career. British young men list the UK business tycoon Alan Sugar, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg as their to p role models “for their money”, jus t as Chinese teenagers see being a banker as a good and fun pathway to “fortune”.
However, not every child has the makings of a doctor, lawyer or banker. There are those who see fulfillment and happiness in other areas, and many teenagers dare to ink more individuality into their career options. A variety of unconventional jobs--- coffee shop owner, gourmet, waiter at a fast food restaurant--- are among teenagers’ career choices. They can be equally interesting and rewarding jobs.
With every choice comes responsibility and challenge, and all career paths require specific education and training. You have to learn to balance optimism and confidence with being realistic about your particular talents and skills.
32. According to the text, all of the followings are the benefits of being a doctor except _______.
A. high pay
B. upward social mobility
C. the oldest profession
D. respect from others
33. What is greatly considered in teenagers’ career choices?
A. Relationship.
B. Fame.
C. Finance.
D. Communication.
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Responsibility is the most important thing when you choose a good job.
B. You should be realistic according to your particular talents and skills.
C. With specific education and training, you can get a job easily.
D. You must choose your favorite career according to your particular talents and skills.
35. Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?
A. A career in teenagers’ mind.
B. Teenagers dream of being doctors.
C. The choice of career needs challenge.
D. Choosing a good job is very important.
