Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki’s new animation movie The Boy and the Heron came out in Japan in July 2023. People in the rest of the world can watch it in late 2023.
The new movie tells the story of a boy named Mahito Maki. He loses his mother during a war and feels sad. He then moves to a new town. One day, Mahito finds an old tower. When he goes into it, he meets a talking heron. It says to Mahito, “Your mother is waiting for you. She was not dead.” With the heron’s help, Mahito goes into a magical world and begins his new and dangerous trip.
To make the movie, 60 artists from Studio Ghibli worked together. They drew the animation by hand. Miyazaki is very strict. If there was one small mistake, then they needed to start over. So it took them seven years!
Most animation films now use computer graphics. But Miyazaki doesn’t like them. He thinks computer graphics look “thin and fake”.
