阅读下面四篇短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最优选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.〞
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That’s just for you,〞he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said ab out you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of pe ople who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all,
but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.〞Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.
21. What did the father do after he had heard his daughter’s words?
A. He told her not to pay any attention to what her“enemy〞had said.
B. He criticized her and told her to overcome her shortcomings.
C. He told her to write down all that her“enemy〞had said about her and pay attention
only to the things that were true.
D. He refused to take the list and have a look at it.
22. What does the underlined sentence“Week by week her list grew〞in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Week by week she discovered more shortcomings of mine and pointed them out
to me.
B. She had made a list of my shortcomings and she kept on adding new ones to it
so that it was growing longer and longer.
C. I was having more and more shortcomings as time went on.
D. Week by week, my shortcomings grew more serious.
23. Why did her father listen to her quietly?
A. Because he believed that what her daughter’s“enemy〞 said was mostly true.
B. Because he had been so angry with his daughter’s shortcomings that he wanted
to show this by keeping silent for a while.
C. Because he knew that his daughter would not listen to him at that moment.
D. Because he wasn’t quite sure which girl was telling the truth.
24. Which do you think would be the best title for this passage?
A. Not an Enemy, but the Best Friend
B. The Best Advice I’ve Ever Had

My mother always told us there is no use crying over spilled milk. That means you should not get angry when something bad happens and cannot be changed. She also told us you have to break some eggs to make an omelet (煎蛋卷). This means you have to do what is necessary to move forward.
My mother believed you are what you eat. A good diet is important for good health. She would always give us healthy food. She liked serving us meat and potatoes for dinner. Meat and potatoes can also mean the most important part of something. It describes someone who likes simple things.
People always said my father was the salt of the earth, because he would never pour salt on a wound(伤口), or make someone feel worse about something that was already a painful experience. However, sometimes he told us a story that seemed bigger than life. So we had to take it with a grain of salt. That is, we could not believe everything he told us.
My manager at work does not always know what is going on in our office. Yet she is right about one thing: there is no such thing as a free lunch. Something may appear to be free, but there may be a hidden cost. When we fail to see problems at work, my manager tells us to wake up and smell the coffee. We need to pay more attention and fix the problem. I once made a big mistake at the office and felt foolish. I had egg on my face.
Over the weekend, my friend invited me to watch a football game on television. But I do not like football. It is not my cup of tea.
I hope I have given you food for thought, that is, something to think about.

Today we hear more and more about the importance of getting enough sleep—about eight hours a night. Sleep can give energy to both the body and the brain. Scientists now believe that sleep is even important for health than diet or exercise.
Studies show that people in developed countries spend less timeasleep and more time at work. Dr. Karine Spiegel, at the University of Chicago, has found that the average length(平均长度)of sleep has gone down from nine hours a night in 1910 to seven and a half hours a night today. However, losing just one or two hours of sleep a night, over a long period of time, can cause serious health problems.
According to Canadian scientist Dr. Stanley Coren, every hour of lost sleep at night causes us to lose one IQ point the next day. For example, when someone gets only five or six hours of sleep each night for a week, the person’s IQ could go down 15 points or more.
Most sleep scientists say that humans need at least eight hours of sleep every day, but it should include a long sleep at night and a shorter nap(打盹) in the afternoon. Some companies help their workers follow this advice. They allow them to “power nap〞 in the afternoon, if only for about 20 minutes. They say this makes the workers much more efficient.
To study sleep deprivation (not getting enough sleep), scientists use a test called the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). During the test, a person stays in a dark and quiet room during the daytime. Scientists believe that a sleep-deprived person will fall asleep quickly. If it takes ten minutes or longer to fall asleep, the person is probably getting enough sleep.
Scientists have also found that the time of year seems to affect(影响) how much sleep we need. People usually sleep longer in the winter, sometimes as much as 14 hours a night. However, in the summer, people sometimes sleep as little as six hours, without having any problems.
32. What has Dr. Karine Spiegel found?
A. People sleep less nowadays than in the past.
B. One’s IQ depends on how many hours he sleeps.
C. People need at least eight hours of sleep every day.
D. Sleep is more important for health than diet or exercise.
33. The “power nap〞 mentioned in paragraph 4 refers to a sleep of _________.
A. about ten minutes
B. about twenty minutes
C. about half an hour
D. about an hour
34. The Multiple Sleep Latency Test is based on the fact that ________.
A. the sleepier people are, the faster they will fall asleep
B. the cleverer people are, the less sleep they need
C. the longer people sleep, the healthier they are
D. the colder it is, the sleepier people are
35. According to the passage, ________.
A. sleeping for six hours is enough for people on cold days
B. people in developed countries spend more time asleep
C. nowadays people usually sleep for nine hours a night
D. a power nap can help a worker do better

One possible version:
Dear Jack,
I am sorry to hear that you were misunderstood by a friend recently, thus not
trusting friendship any more.Don’t be upset about it and I hope you can recover and
build up the confidence in friendship. It is very common that there will be misunderstanding even between the best friends. The true friendship lies in
understanding and trust between each other. To develop a friendship, we should think
more of others as well as being a good listener. As far as I’m concerned, you should
talk face to face with Jack and find out the problem. If he doesn’t want to talk,
you can write a letter to him, expressing your opinions in a friendly way. I believe
everything will be Ok soon.
I hope my advice will be helpful and you can make some true friends as soon as
possible.
Yours,
Li Ming。
