Australia---The vote for euthanasia(安乐死)was finally taken at 3:45 this morning. After six months’ argument and final 16 hours’ hot debates, Australia’s Northern Territory became the first legal authority in the world to allow doctors to take the lives of incurably ill patients who wish to die. The bill was passed by the vote of 15 to 10. Almost immediately word flashed on the Internet and was pic ked up, half a world away, by John Hofsess, the director of the Right to Die Society of
Canada. He sent it on through the group’s on-line service, D eath NET. Hofsess says, “We posted it all day long, because this isn’t just something that happened in Australia. It’s world history.”
The full import may take a while to understand. The NT Rights of the Terminally III law has left physicians and citizens trying to deal with its moral and practical meaning. Some have breathed sighs of relief, but others, including churches, right to life groups and the Australian Medical Association, bitterly attacked the bill and the haste(匆忙,急忙) of its passage. But the tide is unlikely to turn back. In Australia — where an aging population, life extending technology and changing community attitudes have all played their part —other states are going to consider making a similar law to for euthanasia. In the US and Canada, where the right to die movement is gathering strength, observers are waiting for the dominoes(多米诺骨牌) to start falling.
Under the new Northern Territory law, an adult patient can request death — probably by a deadly injection or pill — to put an end to suffering. The patient must be diagnosed as incurably ill by two doctors. After a “cooling off” period of seven days, the patient can sign a certificate of request. After 48 hours the wish for death can be met. For Lloyd Nickson, a 54 year old Darwin man suffering from lung cancer, the law means he can get on with living without the fear of his suffering: a terrifying death from his breathing condition. “I’m not afraid of dying from a spiritual point of view, but what I was afraid of was how I’d go, because I’ve watched people die in the hospital fighting for oxyg en and clawing at their masks,” he says.
46. According to the text ,which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Australia now is the only country in the world to pass the law of euthanasia.
B. Al l people in Australia don’t have the same positive attit ude to euthanasia.
C. Many patients will ask their doctors for euthanasia because they are afraid of death.
D. According to the law, if a patient requests death, his or her wish will be met after 48 hours.
47. The underlined sentence in Para 2, “observers are waiting for the dominoes to start falling.” means that observers are waiting to see ___________.
A. the result of the game of dominoes.
B. that people’s attitude to euthanasia will be changed.
C. that the bill about euthanasia in Australia will come to an end.
D. the similar bills will be passed in other countries.
48. Australia was the first country to pass the bill of euthanasia, but not USA or Canada. Which one is NOT the reason ?
A. In Australia, the technology of extending life is advanced.
B. In Australia, it is easy to deal with the moral and practical meaning.
C. In Australia, old people take up great part in the population of the whole country.
D. Australians gradually realize suffering from a terrible disease is worse than immediate death.
49. It can be inferred from the text that _____________.
A. when Lloyd Nickson dies, he will face his death with calm characteristic of euthanasia.
B. physicians and citizens in Australia share the same view on euthanasia.
C. other countries are going to consider making a similar law to deal with euthanasia.
D. under the bill, patients requesting death are sure to be injected by deadly medicine.

B. Critical

America ns have always been firm believers of what William James called “the bitch goddess success”. Self-help guidance books have topped the bestseller lists since Benjamin Franklin published his autobiography. Americans are much more likely than Europeans to believe that people can get ahead in life so long as they are willing to work hard. And they are much more likely to choose a high-paying job that carries a risk of redundancy(裁员) than a lower-paid job that guarantees security.
But you can’t have winners with out losers (or how would you know how well you are doing?). And you can’t broaden opportunity without also broadening the opportunity to fail. For example, blacks could not blame themselves for their failure in the “race of life”, in Abraham Lincoln’s phra se, because at that time they were prevented from so many parts of it. But now although the barriers are lifted, the picture of the blacks’ life is more complex.
All of which creates a huge problem: how exactly should a highly-competitive society deal wit h its losers? It’s all very well to note that drunkards and lazybones get what they deserve. But what about the honest toilers? One way to deal with the problem is to offer people as many second chanc es as possible. In his new book “Born Losers: A History of Failure in America”, Scott
Sandage argues that in the mid-nineteenth century people held a different view of failure—from something that had described a bad business to something that defined a whole life.
Yet one of the outstanding things about America is how strongly it has refused to hold the idea that there is any such thing as a born loser. American schools don’t divide their pupils into groups according to their ability much longer than the European schools: the whole point is to fit in rather than stand out. American higher education has many points of entry and reentry. And the American legal system has some of the most generous bankruptcy(破产) rules in the world. In Europe, a bankrupt is often still a ruined man; in America, he is a risk-taking one.
American history—not to mention American folk tales—is filled with examples of people who tried and tried again until they made a success of their lives. Lincoln was a bankrupt storekeeper. Henry Ford was a continuous failure. At 40, Thomas Watson, the architect of IBM, faced prison. America’s past is also full of people who came back from disaster. A second way to deal with losers is to celebrate them. Perhaps in reaction to the nonstop development of business life, American popular culture often sympathizes with losers. But even in the loser-loving bits of popular culture, the American success is always achieved in spite of difficulties. More often than not, born losers turn out to be winners at last.
51. Why do Americans prefer a high-paying job according to the passage?
A. Because they are fond of taking risks.
B. Because they are devoted to working hard.
C. Because they are eager to achieve success.
D. Because they are interested in reading bestsellers.
52. The underlined words “honest toilers” (Paragraph 3) can best be described as people who are
_________.
A. hard-working
B. reliable
C. wealthy
D. determined
53. The fourth paragraph is written to _________.
A. compare American education system with that of Europe
B. introduce some generous rules of American legal system
C. show that America is ready to give people second chances
D. explain the reason why Americans refuse to be born losers
54. The writer may most probably agree with the idea that ___________.
A. America is a country not fit for black people
B. born losers have already disappeared in modern American society
C. there is always a dislike of people who are crazy about promoting business
D. American society has gradually changed the attitude towards failure over the years
55. Which of the following is mainly conveyed in the passage?
A. Success comes first.
B. More winners, more losers.
C. History is full of changes and advances.
D. Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again.
D
We all know what it is like to be unable to turn your head because of a cold in the muscles of your neck, or because an unexpected twist has made your neck ache. The slightest move makes you jump with pain. Nothing could be worse than a pain in the neck
That is why we use the phrase to describe some people who give you the same feeling. We have all met such people.
One is the man who always seems to be clapping his hands-often at the wrong time-during a performance in the theater. He keeps you from hearing the actors.
Even worse are those who can never arrive before the curtain goes up and the play begins. They come hurrying down to your row of seats. You are comfortably settled down, with your hat and heavy coat in your lap. You must stand up to let them pass. You are proud of yourself-control after they have settled into their seats...Well, what now...God, one of them is up again. He forgot to go to the men's room, and once more you have to stand up, hanging on to your hat and coat to let him pass. Now, that is "a pain in the neck".
Another, well-known to us all, is the person sitting behind you in the movies. His mouth is full of popcorn; he is chewing loudly, or talking between bites to friends next to him. None of them remain still. Up and down, back and forth, they go for another bag of popcorn, or something to drink
Then, there is the man sitting next to you at lunch, smoking. He wants you to enjoy it too, and blows smoke across your food into your mouth.
We can not forget the man who comes into a bus or subway and sits down next to you, just as close as you will let him. You are reading the newspaper and he gets closer so that he can read
the paper with you. He may even turn the paper to the next page before you are ready for it.
We also call such a person a "rubber neck", always getting close to where it does not belong, like neighbors who watch all your visitors. They enjoy learning about your personal business. People have a strong dislike for "rubber necks". They hate being watched secretly.
56.Where can you find this passage?
A In a medicine dictionary. B.in a kids' story book
C. In a social science book
D. In a science textbook
57. According to the passage, how do you feel when late comers walk back and forth in
front of you in a cinema?
A. ignored
B. tired,
C. disturbed.
D. relaxed.
58.A "rubber neck" often _______ .
A says bad words behind people
B. asks about other people' s business
C. bargains with salespeople over the price
D. quarrels face to face with neighbours
59. Which of the following persons CANNOT be described as a "pain in the neck"?
A. Someone who often claps at the wrong time during a performance.
B. Someone who feels ache in his neck due to a cold in the muscles.
C. Someone who sits next to you smoking, which you never enjoy.
D. Someone who keeps eating or talking all through the movies.
60. What is the main purpose of the author?
A. To tell people what might be bad manners in public.
B. To criticize the people who might be a "pain in the neck".
C. To show anger to those who are described as a "pain in the neck".
D. To tell people how to stop the pain in the neck

Ways to improve conversation skills
I believe that one of the best ways to connect with people and build quality relationships is through making conversation. Although most people can hold a conversation, only a few are smooth when they talk.
Working as a communication coach, I have explored and tested, many techniques for improving conversation skills. I have discovered some simple and practical ways to be a smooth talker. Here they are:
61.
Typically, good talkers don’t rush into a conversation. They take their ti me when they reflect on something and when they say it out loud. They act as if they have all the time in the world. This makes them come off as centered and collected. Model this way of talking and you will create the same effect.
62.
People with good conversation skills tend to notice the kind of things that the average person doesn't notice, and to bring such details into the conversation. They may notice and point out an interesting ring on the other person’s hand, a certain foreign accent, or a c ertain voice tone they use when saying a name. Thus, such individuals impress people in a very elegant manner.
63.
Anybody can pay a general compliment to try and get another person’s appreciation. Some people on the other hand are able to really pay attention to others, to look beyond their appearance and thus, pay unique compliments. Do the same and besides winning others over, you may even help them find out things about themselves they didn't know.
64.
It’s very rare to meet a person who i s comfortable talking about their emotions and how certain things make them feel, especially with strangers. Yet this way of talking is a real virtue. Don’t just present the facts, you’re not a newspaper. Express your feelings about those facts. Keep in m ind hat it is at the emotional level that people connect best.
65.
Anybody can talk about the news or express basic opinions. But good talkers can frequently
tell you things you didn’t know and that you’find fascinating. This is why it’s good to ha ve knowledge into fields such as psychology or sociology, and bring such knowledge out at the right moments in a conversation.
Conversational skills don’t improve just like that. It takes time, practice and the ability to learn at a rapid rate from your own experiences. On top of this, they have virtually no limit to how far they can be developed. Considering your relationships and social life constitute one of the fundamental components of your life, I believe it is worth embarking on a long-term journey of mastering your Interpersonal abilities. It’s a journey you won’t regret..

Every student will be faced with the question when he passes the college entrance examinations: Should we choose a good major or a good university first? Some students prefer to consider majors first so that they can learn what they are interested in. It will also make it possible for them to take their favorite jobs in the future. However, those who think differently believe that the environment is important to one’s development and that graduates from leading universities are often more likely to find a good job. In my opinion, the best choice is a good major at a good university. If we cannot obtain both, the first thing to consider is a good major, because no matter where we study, we can still achieve a lot in a certain field if we try our best.。
