A woman who fell in love with a snake married the reptile at a traditional Hindu wedding celebrated by 2,000 guests in India’s eastern state of Orissa.
Bimbala Das wore a silk saree for the ceremony Wednesday at Atala village near the Orissa state capital Bhubaneswar.
Priests chanted mantras at the end of the ceremony, but the snake failed to come out of the nearby ant hill where it lives, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said on Friday. A brass replica snake stood in for the hesitant groom.
“Though snakes cannot speak nor understand, we communicate in a peculiar way,” Das, 30, told the agency.
“Whenever I put milk near the ant hill where the cobra lives, it always comes out to drink.”
“I always get to see it every time I go near the ant hill. It has never harmed me,” she added.
Villages welcomed the wedding in the belief it would bring good fortune and laid on a feast for the big day.
Snakes, particularly the King Cobra, are venerated in India as religious symbols worn by Lord Shiva, the god of destruction.
Das, from a lower society status, changed into an animal-loving vegetarian. Local elders gave her permission to marry the cobra, the world’s largest poisonous snake that can grow up to five metres.
“I am happy,” said her mother Dyuti Bhoi, who has two other daughter and two sons to marry off.
“Bimbala was ill,” Bhoi told local OTV chann el. “We had no money to treat her. Then she started offering milk to the snake … she was cured. That made her fall in love.”

For some teenagers, this summertime is no longer a pastime. An estimated 120,000 children in 31 cities are expected to attend one-day entrepreneur-training(培训企业家的) events this summer, called Lemonade Day. The program, which started in 2007 with 2,600 participants, teaches children and teenagers how to borrow from and repay investors who help start their stands (货摊), and what to do with profit, including donating some to charity, says founder, Michael Holthouse, a Houston philanthropist(慈善家).
With summer approaching, an increasing number of high school children around the country are preparing to launch their own start-ups – and not just lemonade stands. With lawn-mowing businesses, hand-painting of tennis shoes, or Bosnian-language computer repairs, teenagers are searching a place in the dismal (低落的) job market and earning their own pocket money or cash for college.
“If you can’t get a job, you can create your own,” says Steve Mariotti, founder of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, a New York-based non-profit organization that provides programs for schools.
What’s more, teenage entrepreneurs are taking suggestions from their supporters. Josh B ostick started Josh’s Car Wash Service a t the age of 14. Today, the 17-year-old boy is marketing his services through text-message blasts, newspaper ads and an auto trade show booth. He is planning to hire two friends this summer to help wash commercial truck fleet, and he is meeting with car dealers to sell his services. Based on his 2011 business plan, Josh recently increased his projected profit for this year by 50% to $15,000.
One of his customers says his service is special: Josh watches weather forecasts and warns customers of approaching rain, suggesting they delay washing their cars until after the storm. Josh say, “I do lose a good amount of business doing that, but my customers are really appreciative.” He hopes to hav e $50,000 saved up when he leaves for college next year.
About 3.7% of high school seniors are interested in becoming business owners or entrepreneurs, based on a survey of 1.9 million students by the National Research Center for College & University Admissions. “Such programs as the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship and Lemonade Day encourage young entrepreneurs to get an early start,” says Andrew Sum, director of the Center
for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University, Boston.
62.Which of the following statements is NOT true about Lemonade Day ?
A. It was launched in 2007 with 2,600 participants.

C. Students can learn what to do with the money they earn.

A. lawn-mowing businesses

九、任务型阅读.(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. I feel there are a number of reasons for this.
Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded (包围) by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food.
There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives.
There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime(消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.
The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as keeping them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.
Title: Children's overweight

书面表达 possible version
Nowadays, with the development of the Internet, there is a kind of language called Web language. So many people even speak Chinese mixed with English letters. Our class have a discussion about it.
40 percent of the students hold the view that it is kind of ridiculous. If the words are used too often, people will just be confused, thus sometimes resulting in misunderstanding. Worse still, it will ruin the Chinese language, including its rules of grammar and structure. Besides, it is no use helping students learn English.
However, the others, 60 percent of our class are fond of Web language. In their opinions, Web language is full of humor, which makes language more interesting. In addition, people can express themselves in a simple way with the Web language, making chatting online quicker and more convenient. Therefore, it helps save time and expense spent on the Internet.
As far as I am concerned, living in the Information Age, if we don’t know everything about Web language, we are likely to fall behind the times. It will be Ok as long as these terms are used correctly in proper situations.。
