课外阅读(识别本单元重点词汇)
Basic Interview Strategies
[1] Job-seekers [求职者] all over the world may lose their job opportunities [机会] by abiding by the myth [神话] that the only appropriate clothes for the job interview is a business suit. Wearing a suit in a wrong place can quickly enable you to fail in the interview.
[2] As a jobseeker, a basic aim is to show how well you adapt the company’s culture. If you arrive for the interview in a suit when the interviewer is dressed casually [随意地], you have “shown up [炫耀,使难堪]” the interviewer and probably will not be seen as a match [合适人选] for the company. So what is a jobseeker going to do? You should call the department secretary the day before to inquire about the dress code [着装规则]. On a day with four interviews, you may have four suits in your car.
First impressions [印象]
[3] A jobseeker has to be qualified [合格] in order to get a job, but there will always be many other people who are equally [同样地] qualified for the interview. In the end, you will be employed because the interviewer personally likes you, not necessarily [不一定] because you are the most qualified in the field. And many interviewers will know whether or not they like you within the first five minutes!
[4] In addition to being dressed appropriately, here are some other ways to make a good first impression. Look the interviewer directly in the eyes and smile when you meet, with a firm, but not hard, handshake. You may be surprised how important they are to the interviewer’s impression of you.
[5] Smiling seems to be simple but it is one of the most important ways to succeed in the interview. It sets the tone for the interview, showing you are a pleasant person. Make it a point to look at the interviewer directly when you are answering his or her questions. Body language is important.
[6] Do not feel awkward. Take a comfortable posture[姿势] and avoid changing your position or crossing and re-crossing your legs. If you do, it may give the interviewer an association that you are anxious or nervous. It appears that you are trying to hide something you do not want the employer to know.
Do not ask too many questions.
[7] For the initial interview, contrary to what many were told by college career advisor, it is not wise to spend abundant time researching a company and then showing this acquired knowledge through strategic questioning of the interviewer. The primary goal of any candidate is to sell himself or herself to the interviewer, proving that his or her skills and experience fit the job. Questions should be limited to what the job responsibilities will require and then respond and give examples on how you can accomplish those responsibilities better than the other interviewees.
Be a follower, not a leader.
[8] Yes, companies want leaders, but in the interview, it is more important that you follow the lead of the interviewer. Many jobseekers try to direct the interview so as to get across the points they want the interviewer to know. Instead, you should listen for clues as to what the interviewer wants and try to be that person, within the range of your own abilities, desires and talents. Anticipate the interviewer’s questions as much as possible and be ready with all of your homework done. Then let the interviewer pick and choose what is to be discussed in the interview.
[9] If you appear inactive or depressed, or are slow in answering the interviewer’s questions or listless in your approach, you will rule yourself out of consideration for that job. Interviewers want enthusiastic, happy people who show a strong interest in the job. If you do not, another jobseeker most assuredly will.
