Book Two Module Two

Passage1
A Man Who Ate the Face of a Human
Rudy Eugene, 31, was shot dead in Miami, Florida on May 28, 2012, when he was trying to eat a homeless man’s face. A bicycle rider described the frightening moment he saw: a naked man tore pieces of flesh from another man’s face at the side of a freeway before being shot dead by police when he refused to stop.
Rudy Eugene’s girlfriend didn’t believe it and was quite shocked at the news. She said, “He loved God; he always read the Bible; he would give you knowledge on the Bible. Everywhere he went, his Bible went. When he left, he had his Bible in his hand.” Ruth Charles, Eugene’s mother, was also shocked by the news reports and reached out to the media to try to clear his name. She said that her boy was good-natured, went to church often and had recently given her a Mother’s Day card.
Then what was the reason for Rudy Eugene’s crime? It is believed that Eugene was under the influence of a powerful drug called bath salts at the time.
Emergency room doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital said they have seen an increase in accidents related to the drug. Dr Adams said, “When people take bath salts, their temperature rises to a quite high level, causing them to take off their clothes and become aggressive. Some have been known to use their jaws as a weapon of attack, and they become extremely strong. I took care of a 150_pound person who you would have thought he was 250 pounds. It took six security officers to keep the person under control.”
Dr Adams said that the new drug is not only a danger to those who take it, but also emergency responders who must retrain the drug-users of it. “It’s dangerous for the police, the fire fighters and the hospital workers taking care of them;they have to be restrained both chemically and physically.”

The annual review has seen great progress on the construction of the Museum’s new project the World Conservation(保护) and Exhibitions Centre(WCEC). The new centre will make the BM more famous as the world leader in the exhibition, conservation, examination and analysis of cultural objects from across the world. The WCEC will enable the museum to store, study and display the collection for the future.
The museum continues to share the collection as widely as possible. The BM is the world’s largest lender of objects on both long and short term loan (借出物) and touring exhibitions, with 4,502 objects lent in annual review nationally and internationally.
The Museum also continues to work to support museums in Afghanistan, Iraq and the UAE The BM is consulting on all aspects of the creation of the new Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi, which will be completed in 2016.
