A
Chinese female scientist Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize in medicine on October 5 for her discoveries concerning a novel treatment against Malaria(疟疾). This is the first Nobel Prize given to a Chinese scientist for work carried out within China.
Tu shared the prize with Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan, who were honored for their revolutionary anti-roundworm treatment. 84-year-old Tu is awarded this prize for her contribution to cutting the death rate of malaria, reducing patients’ suffering and promoting mankind’s health. Although she received several medical awards in the past, the 2015 Nobel Prize is definitely the most pri vilege reward that recognizes Tu’s dedication and perseverance in discovering artemisinin(青蒿素), the key drug that battles malaria-friendly parasites(寄生虫).
However, her route to the honor has been anything but traditional. She won the Nobel Prize for m edicine, but she doesn’t have a medical degree or a PhD. In China, she is even being called the “three-noes” winner: no medical degree, no doctorate, and she’s never worked overseas. No wonder her success has stirred China’s national pride and helped promo te confidence of native Chinese scientists.
The fact that Tu has none of these three backgrounds reminds us that science should be more accessible to all. One shall be able to become a scientist no matter what kind of background he or she comes from, as long as one dives into scientific research. There have been discussions on people who really love science but are never able to achieve much during their whole life. Their contributions can never be ignored. They work so hard to prove the wrong way so that the future researchers will be closer to the right one.
As the first Chinese mainland Nobel Prize Winner of natural science award, Tu’s record-breaking winning also serves as a reminder to those who are too eager for instant success. Science is never about instant success. Tu spent decades on scientific research before its value is officially acknowledged. There is no way to measure how much one devotes to science and compare it with how much reward he or she may get.
21. It can be concluded from the text that __________.
A. Tu worked home and abroad to conduct her research
B. Tu got the Nobel Prize for her anti-roundworm treatment
C. The Nobel Prize is the first award to recognize her work
D. Her discovery of artemisinin has helped to cut Malaria death rate
22. The author seems to agree that a person who is more likely to become a scientist is the one with__________.
A. a sense of national pride
B. relevant academic knowledge
C. enthusiasm for scientific research
D. a desire to achieve success
23. In writing the passage, the author intends to ___________.
A. remind readers of the principles of scientific research
B. discourage the pursuit of instant success in science
C. inform readers of the news and make comments
D. praise the award winner and encourage scientific research

I recently got pulled over for speeding not far from my new home in Virginia. I hadn’t been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit.
“Can I see your license and registration?” the police officer asked me. I pulled both out for him, and he saw my Pittsburgh address on my Pennsylvania driver’s license.
“What are you doing here?” he asked. “Are you with the army?”
“No, I’m not.” I answered. I explained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadn’t had time to re-register yet.
“So what brings you here?” He had asked a direct question. Without thinking very hard, I gave him a direct answer. “Well, officer,” I said, “since you’ve asked, I have cancer. I have just months to live. We’ve moved down here to be close to my wife’s family.”
“So you’ve got cancer,” he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out. Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me. “You know, for a guy who has only a few months to live, you sure lo ok good.”
He was obviously thinking: “Either this guy is pulling one big fat line on me, or he’s telling the truth.” He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest.
“Well, officer, I know that I look pretty healthy. I look great on the outside, but the tumors(肿瘤)are on the inside.” And then, I don’t know what possessed me, but I just did it. I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars.
He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes. He now knew he was talking to a dying man. Well, he wasn’t taking this any further. He handed me back my license. “Do me a favor.” he said, “Slow down from now on.”
The awful truth had set me free. As he went back to his police car, I had a realization. I had been one of those gorgeous blondes (金发美女) who could bat her eyelashes and get out of tickets.
I drove home under the speed limit, and I was smiling like a beauty queen.
24. The author was stopped by the police officer because ______.
A. he drove too fast
B. he forgot to re-register
C. he was seriously ill
D. he didn’t have a license
25. The author moved to Virginia probably because ______.

D. he served in the army there
26. On hearing about the author’s cancer, the police officer ______.
A. said it was an excuse
B. doubted his honesty
C. showed sympathy for him
D. asked him to show his scars
27. It can be inferred from the passage that the author was ______.
A. romantic
B. adventurous

Time Travel
If you could travel in time, where would you go? Perhaps you would watch an original performan ce of a Shakespeare’s play in Elizabethan England? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe you’d voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds.
The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best known example is science fiction novel The Time Machine, which was written by H.G. Wells and published in 1895 for the first time. It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.
But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose using cracks in time and sp ace called “wormholes”, which could be used as shortcuts to other periods. Einstein's theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicist Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship —going at nearly the speed of light. Though building such a spaceship would of course be no simple task.
Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born.If the time traveler wasn't born, how would he travel back in time?
And would you really like to visit the future? In H.G.Wells' book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles(触角).If that's what's in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.
28.The novel The Time Machine mentioned in Paragraph 2 aims to show___________.A.the special feature of the book
B.People's interest in time travel
C.the long history of time travel
D.the contribution of H.G.Wells
29.Einstein's and Hawking's theories_________.
A.suggest the possibility to invent the time machine
B.have similarities in many ways
C.have proved wrong by some time travelers
D.push the invention of the first spaceship
30.In Paragraph 4,“grandfather paradox” probably refe rs to the idea that__________.A.the traveler is prevented from meeting his grandfather
B.the traveler goes back in time to seek for his grandfather
C.the grandfather's death makes the traveler's birth impossible
D.The reunion of the traveler and his grandfather brings happiness
31.According to the passage, what is probably the author's attitude towards time travel?
A.Supportive.B.Unconcerned.C.Unclear.D.Skeptical.

Since the beginning of time never has there been another with my mind, my heart, my eyes, my ears, my hands, my mouth. None that came before, none that live today, and none that come tomorrow can walk and talk and move and think exactly like me. I’m a unique creature.
Vain attempts to imitate others no longer will I make. Instead will I place my uniqueness on display in the market place. I will begin now to highlight my differences; hide my similarities.
I am rare, and therefore I am valuable. I am the end product of thousands of years of evolution; therefore, I am better equipped in both mind and body than all the emperors and wise men before me.
But my skills, my mind, my heart, and my body will weaken, rot, and die for fear that I put them to good use. I have unlimited potential. Only a tiny part of my brain do I employ; only a small amount of my muscle do I apply.
So never again will I be satisfied with yesterday's accomplishments nor will I lose myself, anymore, in self-praise for deeds which in reality are too small to even acknowledge. I can accomplish far more than I have, and I will. I am not on this earth by chance. I am here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth(从今往后) will I apply all my efforts to become the highest mountain of all and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy.
I will increase my knowledge of mankind, myself, and the goods I sell. I will practice, and improve, and polish the words I speak to multiply my sales, for this is the foundation on which I will build my career. Also will I seek constantly to improve my manners and graces, for they are the sugar to which all are attracted.
I have been given eyes to see and a mind to think and now I know a great secret of life that all my problems, discouragements, and heartaches are, in truth, great opportunities in disguise. I am nature’s greatest miracle. And nature knows not defeat. Eventually, she achieves victory and so will I, and with each victory the next struggle becomes less difficult.
32. It can be inferred from the text that the author is most probably a(n) _________.
A. salesman
B. soldier
C. robot
D. athlete
33. Which of the following can best describe the author’s character?
A. Intelligent, calm and content.
B. Ambitious, confident and optimistic.
C. Independent, cold and aggressive.
D. Confident, modest and realistic.
34. According to the text, which of the following is fundamental to the author’s career building?
A. Knowledge of mankind.
B. Prediction of the market.
C. Speaking skills.
D. Sense of victory.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Great opportunities in disguise
B. The power of being different
C. The great secret of life
D. Nature’s greatest miracle

第二节:
One possible version
Desmond Tutu, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, once said, “Your family are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.”, which tells us that parents are to us what lighthouses are to ships.Without parents, we would get lost when we grow up; without us, parents would feel sad and lonely.
I’m the apple of my parents’ eye. As a pupil, I couldn’t remember English words, often failing exams. So bitter was the feeling of being defeated that I thought of giving up. To encourage me, they told me to fill a glass with rapid running water. Unexpectedly, I found however hard I tried, my glass was only half full. Only then, did I realize what I needed to learn English well were right ways. With their help, I mastered the methods of memorizing vocabulary. Now, English has become my strength, which has also become their pride and joy.
No doubt both parents and we are important to each other.

M: Have you seen the latest play at the Golden Street Theater? It’s called April Dreaming and I just read a great review about it in the paper.
W: I saw it last weekend with my friend and it was amazing. I highly recommend it.
M: Well, I was trying to get tickets for Friday night, but they were sold out. Saturday, too. That’s a big disappointment because I really want to see it.
(Text 7)
M: Hello, Bertie.
W: Hi. I want to find a place to have supper. There are many restaurants in this area. It is difficult to decide which one to go to. When I choose a restaurant, I always take its nearby restaurants into consideration; it must be the super one among all of them.
M: It sounds reasonable. But it’s simpler for me to pick a restaurant as long as the restaurant is big enough and have seats available.
W: Oh, look! I think this one is pretty good.
M: It seems that the number of seats there is great.
W: OK. Let’s go.
(Text 8)
W: The weekend is almost here. Let’s do something together.
M: You’re right. How about going camping?
W: It’s a bit cold for camping, don’t you think?
M: A lright, let’s go hiking instead.
W: Hmm, I don’t have energy to do that. Every time I go back from hiking, I need several days to have a rest. How about going to the museum?
M: Well, it doesn’t sound very exciting, but I’ll go. Then afterwards, let’s go ou t for dinner.
W: Why don’t we eat at home instead? I went shopping this morning and there’s a lot of food in the fridge.
M: Sounds good. Well, how about going to see a movie in the cinema after dinner?
W: Great. Now let’s try and decide what movie to watch.
(Text 9)
W: Well, I’m really worried about how I’m going to deal with university life. Maybe if I knew the university a bit better, that might help.
M: Do you have a map of the university?
W: Yes.
M: Well, let’s look at it together. OK, we are here now i n Dalton House. Opposite this building is the Arts Block where you will find the computers. The computer rooms are open from 9:00
a.m. till 8:00 p.m. weekdays.
W: Fine.
M: Another important building is the students’ union. To get to the students’ union yo u keep going down University Lane, past the Science Block on your left. Opposite the Science Block are the Chemistry labs and the students’ union is just on the right, next to Lab B.
W: Fine. But I get a bit confused about the directions.
M: Probably the best thing to do is to walk around and familiarize yourself with everything. Now I need you to fill in this form. Take it away with you and then make an appointment to see me again and we’ll go over it. My telephone number is on the form. You can ring me an ytime, except on Thursday.

M: Attention please! Now I will give you a brief introduction to the Winter Festival. It is a free event for all people to enjoy, and is organized by a team of volunteers. The first Winter Festival was introduced the year before last. Sadly due to a lack of money no festival was held last year. This year the government may provide $15,000 to the festival. They also persuaded the businessmen around the town to offer the rest $5,000.
There will be a free art exhibition on Friday 18, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December in the Center Park of the town. The opening hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and there is an opening night only on Friday, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Different from other exhibitions, this art exhibition is really a special one because the public will have the chance to watch the paintings which are from the town’s school. And all the paintings are created by the students.
It is great that the Festival is going to host a wonderful sound of music in the Main Exhibition Hall this year. This programme aims to show some of the musical talents that we have in town.
Everyone watching the performance had better not wear formal clothes, but fancy dress. And in the programme, you will hear classical music, pop music, rock music and operas.。
