Some of the world’s most talented musicians have played concerts atLincolnCenter. On September 10, the center hosted a unique class of star musicians: kids and teens. The young players are part of the World Peace Orchestra, or WPO. The group held its first Music for Peace concert inNew York City, with 134 students from more than 60 countries taking part. Musicians were chosen from all over the world.
The World Peace Orchestra began in 2013. The nonprofit group brings kids together using the common language of music. To be considered for the orchestra, students first had to be recommended by their teachers and then audition online for a group of judges. Once chosen, professional musicians and teachers then worked with the players to improve their skills.
Some of the young musicians played classical instruments, such as violins and flutes. Others played instruments unique to their home country. For example, Amold Mugo, 16, fromKenya, played an instrument called the djembe. The drum is originally fromWest Africa. Mugo said he was shocked when he learned he was chosen for the orchestra. “I can’t express how I felt. I was rolling on the floor. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” he said.
Adomas Hendrixson, 13, fromLithuania, played piano for the WPO. Before theNew York Cityperformance, Hendrixson talked about what he hoped to take away from the event. “Fun and joy-- people smiling and clapping,” he said.“This is one of the only times in your life this could happen and I'm very excited.”
Mugo says his favorite part of the WPO is making new friends from around the world. “I hope when I go home, I just take a little bit of every friend that I made here-- Brazil, Portugal, Queens,” Mugo said, “I hope that I take part of their culture home with me so I understand them more.”

Dengue is a very painful illness spread by mosquitoes. In severe cases, dengue can even be deadly. Dengue is a serious disease affecting people in around 120 countries. It can cause high fevers, headaches, and severe pain. It’s caused by a virus spread by bites from mosquitoes. Therefore, dengue is more common in warm areas. Every year, roughly 390 million people get dengue, and as many as 25,000 die from it.
Now scientists seem to have found a way to protect humans from dengue by first protecting mosquitoes. Dengue fever is caused by a virus. Though it may seem strange to think of it this way, the mosquitoes that spread the dengue virus are also infected with it. But the virus doesn’t seem to hurt the mosquitoes.
Wolbachia is a kind of bacteria commonly found in many insects. In some insects, Wolbachia can keep some viruses fromduplicatingthemselves, which is how viruses grow inside a body. Wolbachia isn’t naturally found in mosquitoes. But by infecting these mosquitoes with Wolbachia, scientists can keep the mosquitoes from catching the dengue virus. Even better, the young mosquitoes coming from the eggs of the infected mosquitoes also carry Wolbachia.
Researchers working with the World Mosquito Program (WMP) ran a 27-month study in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. They split a 10-square-mile area up into 24 smaller areas. In half of the areas, the scientists did nothing. In the other half, they set out containers of eggs from mosquitoes that had Wolbachia. They did this every two weeks for just 4 to 6 months.
Ten months later, 80% of the mosquitoes in the treated areas carried Wolbachia. The researchers report the number of dengue cases in the treated areas was reduced by 77% and that the number of people needing hospital care for dengue dropped by 86%.
Because the results of the experiment were so good, the WHO has placed Wolbachia-infected mosquito eggs in all parts of Yogyakarta and surrounding areas. The WHO says that within a year, their efforts will protect 2.5
million people against dengue and that their efforts will be turned into a program that can be repeated worldwide.
4. What kind of disease is dengue?

What acts of kindness will make us the happiest, and who tends to benefit the most? A newly-published review of decades of kindness research provides some answers.
In this paper, researchers analyzed the results from 126 research articles looking at almost 200, 000 participants from around the world. The studies they chose measured well-being in various ways, including both mental and physical health. Some were experiments, where people did a kindness practice to observe its effects, while others just surveyed people about how kind and happy they were.
As expected, people who were kind tended to have higher well-being. Lead researcher Bryant Hui wasastoundedthat the relationship wasn't stronger than it was, but he was still encouraged by the results.
One thing Hui and his colleagues found was that people who performed random, informal acts of kindness, like bringing a meal to a sad friend, tended to be happier than people who performed more formal acts of kindness, like volunteering in a soup kitchen.
The researchers also found that people who were kind tended to be higher in "eudaimonic happiness"(a sense of meaning and purpose in life) more than "hedonic happiness"(a sense of pleasure and comfort). Perhaps this makes sense, given that being kind takes effort, which reduces comfort but could make people feel better about themselves and their abilities, which would provide a sense of meaning.
Being kind came with greater eudaimonic happiness for women than for men, too. According to Hui, this could be because, in many cultures, women are expected to be kinder than men; so, they may have more to gain
from it. And younger participants experienced more happiness when they were kind than older participants, perhaps for developmental reasons, he says.
Hui isn't sure why acting kind might have these different effects on different groups, but he points to theories put forth by researcher Elizabeth Midlarsky: Being kind may make us feel better about ourselves as a person or about the meaning of our lives, help us forget our own troubles and stresses, or help us be more socially-connected with others.
8. What does the data in the second paragraph intend to show?
A. The recent paper is worthy of being read.
B. The recent paper gives convincing results.
C. Kindness is always a hot topic of research.
D. Kindness is closely linked to one's well-being.
9. What does the underlined word "astounded" in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Afraid.
B. Certain.
C. Excited.
D. Surprised.
10. Which of the following acts of kindness can make one feel happier according to paragraph 4?
A. Volunteering in a hospital.
B. Cleaning a community.
C. Returning a lost item to its owner.
D. Collecting donations for the poor.
11. What do the researchers find from the paper?
A. Being kind has different effects on different groups.
B. Eudaimonic happiness makes people feel comfort.
C. The younger experienced more happiness than the older.
D. Female participants are kinder than male ones.

Many Americans experience surprise (or disappointment) when they wake up on Christmas Day. They might be surprised or disappointed by a family member’s actions. They might be happy or unhappy about a Christmas gift. Imagine a child expects to get an Xbox or PlayStation for Christmas. On Christmas morning, they quickly open their gift. Inside is an English grammar book. They might feel disappointed. The Everyday Grammar team would prefer the new English grammar book. But if you are like most young people, you would probably rather have a new video game.
Today, we are going to explore those feelings-feelings of surprise and disappointment. In other words, we are going to explore how speakers show that reality was better or worse than their expectations.
Many languages use words to express expectation. Speakers also use words to express how events are not happening as expected. This idea is known as “counter expectation”.
Do not worry about the term. Just remember that it means that speakers use words to show that reality is countering their expectations.
English has many words that serve this purpose. Three of the most common are the words “even”, “still” and “actually”. You will often hear them in informal, everyday speech. Speakers use these words to show disappointment. The pitch of their voice tells you what they mean. Let’s study examples of each word.
Speakers often use the word "even” to show disappointment or surprise. Imagine a young child that expects a phone call from a family member-perhaps an uncle or grandparent. The phone call never comes. The child might say the following: “What’s wrong with him? He didn’t even call me on Christmas day.” Americans sometimes use “still” for showing how reality does not quite meet their expectations: “You’re still here? It’s over! Go home. Go!” Another common word that shows surprise or disappointment is “actually”: “I can’t believe it! Uncle Bob actually stole her Christmas gift.”
12. What might most young Americans prefer as a Christmas gift according to paragraph 1?
A. A newly made video game.
B. An English grammar book.
C. A new designed school bag.
D. A unique jacket from their parents.
13. What does the underlined phrase “counter expectation” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Expression of disappointment.
B. Something expected to happen.
C. The same with one’s expectation.
D. A result against what is expected.
14. What do the three words “even”, “still” and “actually” have in common?
A. They are easy to understand.
B. They express disappointment.
C. They show delighted feelings.
D. They are used most at Christmas.
15. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Expectations from loved ones.
B. Different uses of the three words.
C. Examples of the use of the three words.
D. Emotions of disappointment and surprise.

One never knows what one is going to find when one steps out into the world. Even something as simple as a walk through your neighborhood can result in either mild excitement or unusual adventure if the cards are right.
On a sunny afternoon, Mike journeyed into the construction site near his home. Suddenly, he heard something coming from around the side of a nearby building. It sounded like the whining(悲嚎声)cries of an animal. He curiously turned the corner, only to see a small dog standing on its back legs and wagging its tail pitifully. He then noticed that the poor thing seemed to be stuck at the waist between a small concrete wall and an even smaller broken wooden fence.
The poor animal's difficult situation was pretty obvious and Mike knew that if he did nothing and left the dog there, it might not survive. He had no idea how long the animal had been there up until that point. It might not have eaten or drunk anything in days. Determined to help, he looked around to find a stick, proceeded to climb up onto the cement slab and pointed his stick back at the clog. He was trying to pry(撬动)above the animal by insert the stick between the cement wall and the smaller, broken wall, but the terrified animal obviously didn't know his intention and attempted to bite at the tool and barked at him fearfully. The fright in its eyes said everything.
After at least a minute or so of trying to free the dog, Mike found his plan much more difficult in practice than it had stayed inside his own head. The hot sun was beating down. Drops of sweat running down his face, Mike sat clown on the ground and scratched his head with annoyance, thinking about what in the world his next move was going to be. Beside him, the dog curled up into a ball, whining miserably.
